Clippers-Raptors Preview

The Los Angeles Clippers had a prime opportunity to gather some momentum following a rough start to their brutally long stretch of road games. Instead, they became the answer to a trivia question.

The Clippers, however, get another chance to take advantage of a woeful opponent when they face the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

Los Angeles had lost the first three of its 11 straight road games before beating New York 116-108 on Wednesday night. The Clippers (20-33) seemed to have a good shot to build on that victory Friday night, facing a Cleveland team mired in a 26-game losing streak which matched the longest in major pro sports history.

The Cavaliers, though, finally ended their misery with a 126-119 overtime victory and dropped Los Angeles to 3-7 since it lost leading scorer Eric Gordon to a wrist injury. Gordon and center Chris Kaman (ankle) are not expected to return until after the All-Star break.

"Gotta give it up. They played well," guard Baron Davis said. "They wanted to win, and they played like it. I'm not saying we didn't. They made big plays at the end. We didn't."

The Clippers have the second-worst road record in the Western Conference (4-19), but they're facing a team that has dropped 16 of 17 and 13 of 16 at home.

Toronto has won four straight over Los Angeles but will face rookie phenom Blake Griffin for the first time. The All-Star forward, averaging 22.8 points and 12.6 rebounds, posted his 38th double-double in 40 games with 32 points and 13 boards Friday.

Randy Foye has averaged 16.7 points starting the last 10 games in place of Gordon and has scored at least 23 in each of the past two. The former first-round pick has averaged 22.5 points in four career starts against Toronto (14-40).

Davis is averaging 20.6 points and 10.0 assists on the road trip, but he's shot 28.3 percent in his past three games versus Toronto.

The Raptors, allowing a league-worst 48.5 percent shooting and 104.7 points per game, have let each of their first two opponents on a four-game homestand shoot better than 54.0 percent.

They rallied to tie Portland with 4:18 remaining Friday night as Jerryd Bayless scored all 18 of his points in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't stop Trail Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge (37 points) in a 102-96 defeat.

"In the last five minutes, they scored but we didn't. Otherwise, we played a pretty good game," center Andrea Bargnani said. "We just have to play better."

Bargnani, who scored 29 points, is averaging 27.8 over the past four games. He averaged 20.0 points during last season's sweep of the Clippers.

Bargnani scores 27 as Raptors beat Clippers 98-93

TORONTO (AP) Pumped up to face Blake Griffin, the Toronto Raptors pulled out a rare win.

Andrea Bargnani scored 27 points, Ed Davis had 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and the Raptors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 98-93 on Sunday night for just their second victory in 18 games.

"You listen to enough people talk about Blake Griffin, I think it gets our guys fired up to play him and try to stop him," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "They don't want to be the recipient of him dunking on them or making plays on them."

DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points, Leandro Barbosa had 11 and Sonny Weems 10 for the Raptors, who sold out their first home game since Jan. 2 against Boston.

"I wish we could play a big game every night," DeRozan said. "It seems like every time we play a team with a superstar and a lot of hype around it, we definitely step up, and we did tonight."

Jose Calderon had 10 points and 11 assists as Toronto won its fifth straight over the Clippers.

Griffin had 21 points and 15 rebounds and Baron Davis scored 20 points as Los Angeles lost for the sixth time in seven games. Brian Cook scored a season-high 17 points and Ryan Gomes had 14 for the Clippers, who lost their second straight to a slumping Eastern Conference opponent.

Los Angeles lost 126-119 in overtime at Cleveland on Friday, a game that snapped the Cavaliers' NBA-record 26-game losing streak.

"Everyone talks about these other teams," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We aren't exactly road warriors here."

The Clippers are 4-20 away from home, tied with the Timberwolves for the fewest road wins in the West. They're 1-5 on their current trip with games at Milwaukee and Minnesota still to play.

Griffin said the Clippers' current skid is "a little bit tougher" than their 1-13 start to the season.

"Either one is tough," he said. "It's tough to lose games, period, no matter what part of the year it is or how many games you've won before that."

The biggest problem, Griffin said, is injuries to guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman and forward Craig Smith.

"Missing Eric Gordon is huge for us," Griffin said. "He's our leading scorer. Having him out kind of shrinks the court a little bit. We'll be glad to have him back."

Gordon, out since Jan. 22 with a sprained right wrist, is not with the team on this trip. He's rehabbing back in Los Angeles and could return following the All-Star break.

Toronto led 85-77 on a running jumper by DeRozan with 8:31 left, but the Clippers closed the gap with an 8-2 run over the next 4:20, capped by a dunk by Griffin with 4:11 remaining that cut the Raptors' lead to 87-85.

Bargnani gave Toronto some breathing room with a three-point play, banking in a jump shot as he was fouled by DeAndre Jordan. After Jordan made one of two at the line, Bargnani hit a pair of free throws at the other end, putting the Raptors up 92-86 with 3:17 to go.

Bargnani made a long jumper with 1:01 remaining, giving the Raptors a 96-89 edge. The first overall pick in the 2006 draft, Bargnani has topped 20 points in five straight games and is averaging 27.6 over that span.

"He's a tough cover because of his size and ability to put it on the ground," Del Negro said.

Amir Johnson returned to Toronto's lineup after sitting out Friday's loss to Portland with a sprained right ankle, the only game he's missed this season. Johnson, who had played 135 consecutive games, finished with six points in 14 minutes.

DeRozan scored 10 points in the first but Griffin had the highlight play, throwing down an alley-oop pass from Davis, one of his two dunks in the opening quarter. The score was tied at 24 after one.

Davis scored 12 points in the second, but Jordan missed two free throws in the final second of the half, and the teams went into the break tied at 48.

Bargnani had nine points in the third, including a 3-pointer and a driving layup in the final 2 minutes, as the Raptors took a 78-71 lead into the fourth.

Notes: Toronto also sold out a Dec. 19 game against the Lakers. ... Davis' previous career-high in rebounds was 13, set Friday. He played a career-high 36 minutes ... Griffin was cheered loudly during pregame introductions. ... This was Toronto's 500th regular-season game at Air Canada Centre. Their first was a 102-87 win over Vancouver on Feb. 21, 1999.

Raptors-Clippers notebook

THE FACTS: On Sunday evening the Toronto Raptors defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 98-93 in front of a sold-out Air Canada Centre crowd. While people were on hand to see rookie sensation Blake Griffin, it was their Raptors who had them cheering as six players reaching double figures. Led by Andrea Bargnani's 27 points, the Raptors held off the Clippers down the stretch as they picked up their 15th victory of the season. Griffin led the Clippers with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "I wish we could play a big game every night. It seems like every time we play a team with a superstar or a lot of hype around them we definitely step up and we did tonight."

THE STAT: After struggling from the floor in the opening quarter, Bargnani's offensive game picked up as the game wore on. Scoring nine points in the first half on 3-for-9 shooting, Bargnani scored 18 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 27 points to go with six rebounds and two assists.

TURNING POINT: With eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, Vinny Del Negro picked up a technical foul for arguing with an official about a call. Jose Calderon hit a technical free throw to put the Raptors up by three and then Baron Davis picked up a technical, just 13 seconds after Del Negro's. While the Raptors did not run away with the game following the two technical fouls, momentum shifted towards the Raptors and Del Negro sat Davis for the rest of the third quarter. With Davis on the bench, the Raptors pushed their lead to seven going into the fourth.

The final quarter was tightly contested, but after DeAndre Jordan fouled Bargnani on a made bank shot and Bargnani completed the 3-point play with less than four minutes remaining, the ACC crowd rejoiced, the Clippers wore expressions of defeat and the Raptors got the win.

QUOTABLE II: "He's coming along. He's learning every day. The fact that they've got me, [Alex] English, Andrea [Bargnani], Reggie [Evans] in his ear every day, just telling him all of the stuff we know, and he actually listens and uses it."

HOT: Brian Cook was solid for the Clippers in the loss. The reserve scored a season-high 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting in his 24 minutes off of the bench. He also grabbed six rebounds and hit three of his five 3-point field goal attempts.

NOT: Randy Foye struggled against the Raptors, scoring five points in his 37 minutes, shooting just 2-for-14 from the floor. Foye was coming off of an emotional Saturday evening where Villanova retired his jersey. Foye joined the team in Toronto on Sunday morning, but forgot to bring his shot with him.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The game on Sunday marked the 500th regular season game played at the Air Canada Centre. The first game at the ACC was February 21st, 1999 against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

ROOKIE WATCH: While Blake Griffin was the rookie everyone had their eyes on, he wasn't the only first-year player putting on a show. Griffin finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds on 7-for-13 shooting, recording his 45th double-double of the season. Raptors rookie Ed Davis logged a solid night's work as well. Davis finished with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting, while grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds to go with an assist a steal and three blocked shots.

NOTABLE: Both Griffin and DeRozan will take part in the NBA Dunk Contest on All-Star Saturday night and both players had memorable highlight reel slams in the game on Sunday. DeRozan said he got his four dunks picked out for the contest and that close friend Dwight Howard recently exchanged ideas with him. DeRozan also emphatically said he will not be going the Dwight route with any Superman costumes.
