Pacers-Bucks Preview

Since Frank Vogel was named interim coach for Indiana nearly two weeks ago, the Pacers are winning at an alarming rate.

They hope this newfound success can continue against a Milwaukee Bucks team that has regularly frustrated them.

The surging Pacers look to win for the seventh time in eight games and avoid losing their seventh straight to the slumping Bucks on Saturday night at the Bradley Center.

Indiana (23-28) defeated Minnesota 116-105 on Friday, improving to 6-1 since Vogel took over for the fired Jim O'Brien, and with the lone loss coming against Southeast Division-leading Miami. This stretch has helped the Pacers climb into the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, pulling within one game of seventh-place Philadelphia, while opening a two-game lead over Charlotte.

Indiana seemed headed for a loss against the last-place Timberwolves until Dahntay Jones took over.

Jones scored all 19 of his points in the final period to help the Pacers overcome a seven-point deficit. Jones keyed the victory by going 6 of 7 from the field and hitting both 3-point shots.

"Dahntay Jones was red hot," Vogel said. "Dahntay stays ready. He's a good basketball player, a good defensive player and he got hot."

Jones, who played sparingly under O'Brien, has led the Pacers in scoring in two of the last four games.

"It's a confidence-builder when you know when you're going to come in and get minutes," Jones said. "Frank's instilled confidence in everybody."

Vogel has also has the offense clicking. The Pacers have reached triple digits in all seven games under their new coach after hitting the century mark in only seven of their previous 23 contests.

It could be difficult to reach triple figures against a defensive-oriented Milwaukee team that likes to slow things down, but Indiana is likely more concerned with simply winning.

The Pacers have dropped six straight to the Bucks since a 115-108 victory on April 15, 2009, and have also lost the last five in Milwaukee. They lost the first two games this season by a total of six points, but haven't met since early December.

The Bucks (20-32) are heading in the opposite direction of Indiana, having lost six of seven to fall from one-half game back of the East's final playoff spot to 3 1/2 out.

Milwaukee is coming off Friday's 89-86 loss to Memphis, and its middling offense has been particularly bad lately, having scored fewer than 95 points in all six games this month.

"Offensively, we couldn't execute like we wanted to," John Salmons said after the loss to the Grizzlies. "That's kind of been our Achilles' heel the whole year, being consistent on the offensive end."

The Bucks and are 5-29 this season when scoring 95 or fewer, compared to 15-3 when reaching 96.

On Friday, Corey Maggette led Milwaukee with 22 points - including 20 in the third quarter - while Andrew Bogut finished with five points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Bogut, who sat out Milwaukee's 94-90 win at Indiana on Nov. 5 with a migraine, had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Bucks' 97-95 home win over the Pacers on Dec. 8.

Danny Granger, Indiana's leading scorer at 20.9 points, has combined for 45 in this season's two games versus Milwaukee.

Granger leads Pacers past Milwaukee 103-97.

MILWAUKEE (AP) A new approach has the Indiana Pacers playing their best basketball of the season.

Danny Granger scored 14 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to help the Indiana Pacers snap a six-game losing streak to the Milwaukee Bucks with a 103-97 victory on Saturday night.

Darren Collison added 22 points as the Pacers improved to 7-1 since Frank Vogel took over as the interim coach on Jan. 30, replacing the fired Jim O'Brien.

"Honestly, I just think we started playing toward our strengths" Granger said of Vogel's new emphasis. "Whereas before, we kind of just tried to mold everybody into the system that we had. Now, we play inside-out. We've got a really quick point guard, so we play up-tempo. We space people out because we have a lot of good shooters. We're just playing to the strengths that we have with this team."

Collison, who scored eight points in the fourth, agreed that the team is looking to use its strengths more than ever. He also credits Vogel.

"I think he's making it easier for us to play more to our strengths," Collison said. "For myself, he's making it easier for me to get to the paint and create for myself and others. For Danny, he's making it easier for him to get better shots. And Roy Hibbert, he's keeping him at the blocks. He's just simplifying the game for us."

Vogel turned the compliments back toward the players.

"Our guys are starting to understand how good they are," he said. "They're taking care of their business in the fourth quarter with poise and patience."

Granger helped the Pacers pull away when he sparked a 14-0 run with two 3-pointers and a free throw that made it 91-78 with 3:56 remaining.

Leading 75-72 at the end of the third, Indiana missed its first seven shots and made just four of eight free throws before Granger's 3-pointer with 6:58 to play. Fortunately for the Pacers, Milwaukee missed 12 straight shots during the decisive surge.

"That's a sign of a playoff team the way you shut another team down in the fourth quarter," Vogel said.

The victory put the Bucks (20-33) five games behind the Pacers (24-28) in the loss column as Indiana continues its run to the playoffs. They currently hold the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot.

Indiana's last victory over the Bucks was 115-108 on April 15, 2009, and its last win in Milwaukee was 105-101 on April 4, 2008.

Roy Hibbert added 13 points and eight rebounds for Indiana, which has won three of its last four road games.

The reserves led the Bucks with Carlos Delfino scoring 21 points, Keyon Dooling had 13 and Earl Boykins 11. Andrew Bogut had 12 rebounds, but only nine points. Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings each had 10 points, the most of any of the starters.

John Salmons said lack of execution doomed Milwaukee in the fourth.

"We didn't run the plays, just didn't execute the plays like we should," he said. "Didn't have any ball movement."

The Bucks went almost six minutes without scoring during Indiana's decisive run, but Delfino and Keyon Dooling helped Milwaukee make it close late.

Delfino scored five points down the stretch and Dooling made two free throws that made it 101-95 with 10.3 seconds left. But Granger answered with two free throws before Boykins hit a 15-foot jumper for the final margin.

Milwaukee has lost seven of eight to fall from a half-game back of the East's final playoff spot to 4 1/2 out.

Granger went 8 for 15 from the field and made 10 of 13 free throws, including 5 of 6 down the stretch.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute gave Milwaukee its only lead of the second half when he sank two free throws that made it 78-77 with 9:08 left to play. The Bucks would not score again until Delfino sank a pair of free throws with 3:11 remaining.

NOTES: The Bucks honored the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers during a special halftime ceremony. Packers president and chief executive officer Mark Murphy, CB Charles Woodson and S Charlie Peprah each took turns thanking the crowd for their enthusiastic support during the season and promised to bring another championship home next season. Murphy then walked along the baseline near the Indiana Pacers bench and allowed fans to reach out and touch the Lombardi Trophy. Woodson, Peprah and Murphy returned to their sideline seats for the rest of the game. ... Bucks F Corey Maggette left midway through the first quarter with low back pain and did not return. He scored eight points, but the injury snapped his string of 10 straight games in double figures.

THE FACTS: Danny Granger scored 30 points, including two 3-pointers during a decisive 14-0 run in the fourth quarter, and Darren Collison added 22 points as the Indiana Pacers improved to 7-1 under new coach Frank Vogel with a 103-97 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Saturday night at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

QUOTABLE: "That's the sign of a playoff team, the ability to shut another team down in the fourth quarter."

THE STAT: The Bucks made just 8 of 26 shots (30.8 percent) in the fourth but it was much worse than even those numbers. While the game was still on the line, Milwaukee made just two of its first 17 shots (11.8 percent) in the quarter, including 12 in a row, to fall behind by 14 points. Earl Boykins' 3-pointer with 1:49 left ended the streak of 12 misses, and Milwaukee made 6 of its last 9 to make the numbers look better than they really were.

TURNING POINT: A behind-the-back pass from Andrew Bogut set up Carlos Delfino for a layup that tied the game at 76 with 9:51 left. From there the Bucks went 8:02 without a field goal, although Luc Richard Mbah a Moute's two free throws with 9:08 gave them a brief 78-77 lead. Indiana's 14-0 run after that turned things around quite emphatically.

QUOTABLE II: "He definitely needs more touches and more field goal attempts. It's just a matter of trying to get everybody in sync and a few guys at a time having a good offensive night instead of just one on any given night. It's something we're struggling with."

HOT: The Pacers went 5 for 5 during their deciding 14-0 run in the fourth quarter. ... Pacers forward Josh McRoberts made all four shots he took, including a 3-pointer.

NOT: Not a single player in Milwaukee's starting five made at least half of his shots.

INSIDE THE ARENA: At halftime the Bucks saluted the Green Bay Packers for their Super Bowl XLV victory last Sunday, with Packer president and CEO Mark Murphy, cornerback Charles Woodson and safety Charlie Peprah on hand. The Lombardi Trophy also was on display on a table at halfcourt during the ceremony, which included U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, the Bucks' owner.

GOOD MOVE: With the speedy Collison running the offense, the Pacers looked to run even off made Milwaukee baskets, leading to 18 fast-break points, including eight of them on fouls. Between that and attacking the basket in the half-court sets, the Pacers more than doubled Milwaukee in free throw attempts, 41-20.

NOTABLE: After scoring eight points in the first 5:50, Bucks forward Corey Maggette left with lower back pain and did not return. ... .The Pacers ended a six-game losing streak to the Bucks and now hold a 4 ½-game lead over Milwaukee in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. ... The loss was Milwaukee's third straight and dropped the Bucks to 13 games under .500 for the first time since they finished the 2008-'09 season at 34-48.
