Tony Allen stepped up to help the Memphis Grizzlies overcome a pair of key absences.

The Grizzlies may need him to do the same Friday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks.

With O.J. Mayo continuing to serve a league-imposed 10-game suspension, the Grizzlies found themselves even more short-handed Tuesday, when a sprained right big toe forced Rudy Gay and his 20.0 points per game to the sidelines at Oklahoma City.

Allen helped Memphis (28-26) overcome those absences with a season-best 27-point effort in a 105-101 overtime victory over the Northwest Division leaders.

"The guy was an all-pro (Tuesday) on both ends of the floor...I thought he won the game for them," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said of Allen, who also had five steals and three blocks. "Certain guys in this league compete every possession, and he's one of them. He competes every possession, and I love guys that hate getting scored on."

All five starters scored in double figures for the Grizzlies, who will be without Mayo for two more games. Gay's status remains unknown.

"Having Rudy out and O.J. not here and guys banged up here and there but to still come out and beat a good team like Oklahoma City, it shows a lot about our team," said point guard Mike Conley, who had 13 points and four assists.

Gay and Mayo had 11 points apiece in Memphis' 94-81 victory at Milwaukee on Jan. 22, when Grizzlies center Marc Gasol led all scorers with 24. Allen wasn't much of a factor, scoring two points in a little more than six minutes off the bench.

Although the Grizzlies won that matchup, they have lost four consecutive home games to Milwaukee since a 100-90 victory April 7, 2006.

Memphis, which has won nine of 12 overall, this time gets the luxury of facing a Milwaukee club that has dropped five of six.

The Bucks (20-31), 2 1/2 games behind Indiana for eighth place in the Eastern Conference, fell 100-85 at Washington on Wednesday.

"We needed this win (Wednesday). It's important for us to beat these teams that we are capable of beating. There shouldn't be a point where we have these fall back games." said Corey Maggette, who had averaged 19.6 points over his previous eight games before finishing with 10 against the Wizards.

"These are games we need to continue to put us in that playoff race we need to be in. We took a step back and we just got to try to get ready for Memphis to take a step forward again."

Brandon Jennings led the Bucks with 20 points, easily his best performance in seven games since returning from a broken ankle.

"I'm still struggling with my outside shot - no legs, a little bit - but just trying to get to the basket to do what I can," he said.

Jennings, who missed last month's loss to Memphis, is averaging 27.5 points in two career meetings with the Grizzlies.

The Bucks have lost four straight road games by an average of 10.8 points.

Mike Conley leads Grizzlies past Bucks 89-86

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies weathered Corey Maggette's third-quarter scoring barrage and stayed on pace in the Western Conference playoff race.

Mike Conley had 23 points, including a key 3-pointer with 1:12 left, and eight assists as the Grizzlies beat the Milwaukee Bucks 89-86 on Friday night.

Sam Young finished with 19 points and a career-high eight rebounds as Memphis gave coach Lionel Hollins his 100th victory. Memphis stayed a game behind Portland for eighth place in the Western Conference playoff race.

"The win shows how deep this team is," Conley said. "We have a lot of guys who can step up to the occasion and take a different role."

Rudy Gay had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Darrell Arthur added 12 points and Tony Allen 10 as Memphis played without leading scorer and rebounder Zach Randolph, who suffered a sprained right ankle near the end of the Grizzlies' 105-101 overtime victory at Oklahoma City on Tuesday night.

Memphis had to overcome Maggette scoring 20 of his 22 points in the third quarter to capture the victory. Maggette was 6 of 9 in the period, including 4 of 6 outside the arc, putting Milwaukee up by as much as 11.

"When you hit the first one, then you hit the second one, then the third one is kind like a heat check, and you go from there," Maggette said. "The team was putting me in position to make shots."

John Salmons had 18 points and six assists, while Brandon Jennings finished with 16 points.

Conley's 3-pointer with the shot clock running down capped five unanswered points for Memphis, breaking a 77-all tie with 2:58 left.

"We scratched and clawed," Hollins said. "We thought it was going to be easy. We wanted it to be easy. During one of the timeouts, I told them winning is not easy. Even when we have everybody, it's not easy."

The Bucks got no closer than three down the stretch as Memphis hit seven of its eight free throws in the final 19.6 seconds, sending the Bucks to their sixth loss in seven games. Milwaukee struggled from the field with the game on the line, shooting 25 percent in the fourth quarter on 5 of 20 from the field, including missing 11 of their first 12 shots in the fourth.

"We couldn't get stops down the stretch," Salmons said. "Offensively, we couldn't execute like we wanted to. That's kind of been our Achilles' heel the whole year, being consistent on the offensive end."

It was the Grizzlies' second consecutive win, and it stopped a four-game road winning streak for the Bucks in the series.

Memphis opened the fourth with an 8-2 rally, erasing a 68-63 Milwaukee lead at the end of the third.

"I think it was more defense than anything," said Memphis center Marc Gasol, who had nine points and eight rebounds. "When you get a couple of stops and players are talking to each other, that leads to defensive stops. Defense is always key."

The Grizzlies led 45-40 after a sloppy first half. The Bucks shot 35 percent and committed nine turnovers, while Memphis shot 44.4 percent with a handful of miscues.

But the game had little flow at that point, and there were a lot of lineup combinations, leading to sporadic offense.

"They struggled to score, and we were struggling to score ourselves," Hollins said.

Milwaukee's starting front line of Maggette, Ersan Ilyasova and Andrew Bogut managed only Bogut's two points, missing seven of their eight shots in the half.

Bogut ended the game with five points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Young hit all five of his shots in the first half for 13 points to lead Memphis, while Salmons led the Bucks with 10 points.

The Bucks immediately erased Memphis' lead in the third quarter with five 3-pointers, including four from long range by Maggette, to comprise a 16-2 run for a 56-47 lead. Milwaukee extended the lead to 11 in the quarter.

Maggette's 20 in the period helped the Bucks outscored Memphis 28-18. That gave Milwaukee its five-point advantage entering the fourth.

It was a lead the Bucks couldn't maintain.

"We got hot there a bit in the third," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "Corey knocked down some 3s. He bailed us out of our offensive troubles temporarily, but we couldn't get enough guys to participate."

Notes: Bucks G-F Chris Douglas-Roberts, who played college ball at Memphis, sat out with an illness. ... Maggette entered playing well on the road, averaging 15.3 points per game while averaging 10.5 at home. ... Memphis G Jason Williams saw his first action for the Grizzlies after signing earlier this week. He played 4 minutes and did not score. Memphis' last home win over the Bucks was April 7, 2006.

THE FACTS: Playing without forward Zach Randolph, who was out nursing a sprained right ankle, the Memphis Grizzlies had to grind out an ugly 89-86 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, giving them a season sweep of the series. The win snapped a four-game home losing streak to Milwaukee. The Grizzlies were led by point guard Mike Conley, who had 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

THE STAT: After holding Milwaukee to 36 percent shooting, the Grizzlies improved to 5-0 this season when holding to their opponents under .370 shooting from the floor. After giving up 28 third quarter points, the Grizzlies tightened up their defense in the fourth, holding the Bucks to 18 points on 25 percent (5 of 20) shooting.

TURNING POINT: After falling behind 60-49 in the third quarter and trailing 68-63 heading into the fourth, the Grizzlies started the period on a 10-2 run to regain the lead for good

INSIDE THE ARENA: In attendance with a front row seat was U.S. tennis star Andy Roddick. Roddick is in Memphis for next week's Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

QUOTABLE II: ``There's a big difference in this team and the previous Grizzlies' teams. It comes down to no panicking. I think we don't panic as much anymore. HOT: It only lasted for a quarter, but Milwaukee forward Corey Maggette came out of the locker room on fire in the third quarter. Maggette knocked four straight 3-pointers to help the Bucks wipeout a five-point halftime deficit to take their first lead of the game. During the Bucks' 20-4 run to start the second half, Maggette scored 14 points. He finished the quarter making 6 of 9 shots, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, to scored 20 of his 22 points.

NOT: Maggette was the only Milwaukee player to have a good shooting night. Take away his performance and the rest of the team was 22 of 66 (.333).

NOTABLE: Starting in place of the injured Randolph, forward Darrell Arthur scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Arthur has scored in double figures in all seven of his starts this season. ... Newly acquired point guard Jason Williams played his first game with the team since he was part of the 2004-05 playoff squad. Williams, the club's all-time assists leader, played just over four minutes, picking up a turnover on a failed alley-oop pass to Tony Allen. ...Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, the club's winningest coach, picked up his 100th career coaching victory. ... Sam Young added 19 points for the Grizzlies, the eighth time in the last nine games he's scored in double digits. Young also had a career-high eight rebounds. ... The Grizzlies lead the league in games decided by three points or less (14) and are now 7-7 in those contests.
