Suns-Warriors Preview

The Golden State Warriors have been playing well on the defensive end. That certainly hasn't been the case when the Phoenix Suns have been in town.

The Warriors look to match a season high with their fourth straight win when they try to snap a three-game losing streak to the Suns on Monday night.

Despite ranking among the NBA's worst with 105.9 points allowed per game, Golden State (22-27) has been outstanding on defense over the last three contests, holding opponents to 88.3 points and 42.4 percent shooting.

The Warriors had one of their best defensive stretches of the season in the fourth quarter of a 101-90 victory over Chicago on Saturday, holding the Bulls to 18 points.

"Defensively we've been doing some great things, but we haven't been able to put it together for an entire game ... " coach Keith Smart said. "But today I think we did it ... except for a little bit of the third quarter, but we put it together in the fourth quarter where it was a perfect defensive game in the fourth quarter."

Golden State, though, has been far from perfect at the defensive end versus Phoenix (23-25). The Suns have averaged 123.0 points and 52.7 percent from the field in their last eight games in Oakland.

Phoenix has scored 122.3 points a game and shot 47.1 percent in taking nine of the last 11 overall meetings.

Despite going 6 of 18 from 3-point range, Phoenix made 54.8 percent from the floor and won its second in a row at Oracle Arena on Dec. 2, 107-101.

The Suns, however, are coming off a poor late-game effort in a 111-107 home loss to Oklahoma City on Friday. They made two field goals in the last three-plus minutes and were outscored 31-20 in the final period.

"Obviously we've got to do a little bit better job defensively in the fourth quarter," coach Alvin Gentry said, "but we also missed a bunch of shots that could've given us a little separation or could've kept us right there in the game."

Vince Carter kept the Suns in it with a season-high 33 points, but he went 1 of 7 in the fourth as Phoenix's three-game winning streak was snapped.

"Sometimes you feel like you have the hot hand and you are going to keep rolling," Carter told the Suns' official website. "(Missing shots) just happens sometimes."

That hasn't been the case recently for Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, who has averaged 24.1 points and 55.5 percent shooting over the last eight games.

Curry has also keyed the Warriors' tough defense of late, as he helped force Bulls All-Star guard Derrick Rose into a season-high nine turnovers Saturday.

"Tonight we wanted to press up on him, trap him when he had the ball and making him get (the ball) out of his hands to put them in tough situations," Curry said. "It worked out."

Curry's job won't get any easier against Phoenix's Steve Nash, who despite turning 37 on Monday is averaging 16.7 points and 11.0 assists - second best in the NBA.

Nash scored 13 points with 16 assists in the teams' last matchup in Oakland.

Warriors guard Monta Ellis had 38 points in that contest and has averaged 33.7 in the Suns' last three visits.

Nash's 15 assists help Suns beat Warriors 104-92

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Steve Nash had an expensive bottle of red wine from the Napa Valley tucked in a paper bag in his locker, a birthday present from his teammates that he was saving for another day.

They got a taste of everything else.

Nash dished out 15 assists and scored 14 points, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 104-92 victory over the Golden State Warriors on his 37th birthday Monday night.

"It hasn't been a very fun year in large part," Nash said. "But it's been more fun lately."

Channing Frye had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Grant Hill scored 18 to help the Suns build a 23-point lead and hold on late. They made 13 3-pointers and shot 43 percent from the floor in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

The Suns weren't about to blow a game on the seven-time All Star's birthday.

They sang happy birthday to Nash - and Mickael Pietrus, who turned 29 - before the game in the locker room in an acapella rendition. Nash ate some birthday pizza, then sliced through the Warriors.

"Just another night, really," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "He's been doing it forever and I've been there watching him. Nothing that he did really amazed me."

Monta Ellis scored 21 points and David Lee had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who got within five in the fourth quarter but could not come all the way back.

"We played terrible. It's embarrassing for our fans that we came out and played the way we played," Ellis said. "We'd been playing great the last few games and to come out and put up a performance like this is very disappointing."

It was vintage Suns on display for most of the night.

They shot themselves to victory with an array of outside jumpers that even the usually high-scoring Warriors couldn't match. Phoenix went 9 for 15 on 3-pointers in first half, with five different players sinking shots from beyond the arc.

Nash had eight first-half assists, and Frye and Pietrus each made three 3-pointers to put Phoenix up by 20 in the second. Gentry perhaps removed his starters a little too quickly in a game that appeared over.

The Warriors got within 93-88 with about 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter in a frantic rally that even had Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob leading a standing ovation courtside. They scored 11 straight points during the spurt, helped by Phoenix missing eight straight shots with most of its starters on the bench, but just couldn't sustain the momentum.

Nash and Co. shed their warmups and quickly put the game away. Frye made a 3-pointer and another jumper, Nash hit a pull-up shot and the Suns went back ahead 104-90 in about a minute to give Nash a fitting end to his birthday.

The Suns (24-25) have won four of their last five and are in the thick of the playoff race. They are 2 1/2 games behind Portland for the final Western Conference spot, and a game back of Memphis.

"We just have to keep working every day, we have to continue to improve and we also have to get a little bit tougher," Nash said.

Phoenix did enough damage early to put any kind of comeback far out of reach.

The frenetic pace and slick ball movement by Nash and the Suns were too much for the defensively challenged Warriors to keep up. Phoenix went ahead 77-54, shot 61 percent through three quarters and built enough of a cushion to withstand the Warriors' push.

"You're not going to beat them at their game," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "It's not going to happen."

NOTES: Phoenix G Goran Dragic missed his fourth straight game after cutting his left foot stepping on a piece of broken glass at his home, requiring nine stitches. ... Nash had not played on his birthday since 2004, when he had 29 points and 11 assists against Dallas. ... Warriors backup G Acie Law missed his second game in a row with a sprained right wrist. ... THE FACTS: Channing Frye scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns led for the final 47 minutes of a 104-92 victory against the Golden State Warriors on Monday. Grant Hill added 18 points and hounded Warriors star Monta Ellis into a 5-for-17 evening from the floor. Steve Nash had 14 points and 15 assists for Phoenix (24-25), which is on the brink of getting back to .500 for the first time since Dec. 19.

THE STAT: 13-2. With the Suns ranking third and the Warriors sixth in terms of 3-pointers per game, success from behind the arc was always going to be a key determining factor in who won Monday. So when Phoenix hit 13 treys -- including five in the first quarter -- to Golden State's two (on 18 attempts), it was no surprise the Suns came out on top.

TURNING POINT: The Suns struggled badly in the fourth quarter as the Warriors' 1-2-2 and 2-3 zones helped hold Phoenix to just two points during a stretch of more than seven minutes. But with a 3-pointer and long 2 from Frye, followed by a dagger 3 from Nash on the ensuing possession, the Suns led by 13 points with 3:07 remaining. The Warriors' resistance was finished.

HOT: Phoenix opened the game 5-for-5 from the floor -- including three 3s -- to bury the Warriors in a 17-4 hole.

NOT: Golden State helped dig its own grave early by missing eight shots in a row after Andris Biedrins' game-opening bucket, with two turnovers thrown in for good measure.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Frye's last two buckets may have sealed the game, but his work before then wasn't too bad. He went 5-for-9 from behind the arc and tossed in two assists and a block to round out his fantasy contributions.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Warriors owner Joe Lacob -- who was on record with a goal of seeing his team reach 28-27 -- was a picture of abject dejection in his courtside seat as Golden State fell to 22-28, with only 14 home games remaining. ... One courtside fan came prepared to cheer on Steve Nash during the first quarter by waving a full-sized Canadian flag whenever the two-time former MVP dribbled nearby.

GOOD MOVE: Gentry found the exact time to deploy former Warrior forward Mickael Pietrus, who finished with 12 points in just 19 minutes of work.

BAD MOVE: The Warriors, who had such a spectacular game plan for Chicago on Saturday, seemed woefully unprepared to deal with the Suns' wing post-up game. Hill abused Ellis with his back to the basket early on, and whenever Golden State brought an extra body, he found cutters or open teammates.

ROOKIE WATCH: Golden State center Ekpe Udoh had six points and three rebounds while helping to key the Warriors' comeback in the fourth quarter. But Keith Smart felt that two missed free throws at the 6:52 mark was an indication that, despite Udoh's contributions to that point, he needed to come off the floor.

NOTABLE: With a miss at the 43.9-second mark of the first quarter, Reggie Williams' streak of eight consecutive 3-point makes -- a run that dated to Golden State's game vs. Charlotte on Jan. 28 -- came to an end. ... Phoenix's six turnovers is a season-low for Warriors opponents.
