Kevin Durant has been on a scoring tear of late. He could have a difficult time continuing that run against a Phoenix Suns team that's playing better on the defensive end.

Durant and the Northwest Division-leading Oklahoma City Thunder try to continue their push up the Western Conference standings and prevent the Suns from winning four straight at home for the first time this season Friday night.

Durant, the reigning scoring champ, has lifted his league-leading average to 29.3 points after going for 40 or more in three of the last four games. Facing a New Orleans team that is among the league's best on the defensive side, Durant shot 14 of 19 - 5 of 7 from 3-point range - and scored 43 points Wednesday to carry Oklahoma City (31-17) to a 104-93 victory.

The win moved the Thunder a half-game in front of the Hornets for fourth place in the West.

"That's why he's probably MVP of the league right now," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said of Durant, who is shooting 53.7 percent and averaging 40.8 points over the last four games. "You're putting a string of games together like that, you put yourself in a different class."

Coming off his league-best fifth 40-point game of the season, Durant will try to help the Thunder avenge a 113-110 home loss to Phoenix on Dec. 19 that ended their season high-tying five-game winning streak.

Durant had 28 points and teammates Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green added 19 apiece in that matchup. The undermanned Suns were led by Grant Hill's season-high 30 points, while Steve Nash added 20 points and 11 assists.

Phoenix won without Marcin Gortat, Vince Carter and Mickael Pietrus, who were acquired a day earlier from Orlando. The Thunder will have to face all three Friday, and Gortat could be the toughest to cover.

The fourth-year center is backing up Robin Lopez, but Gortat is playing nearly twice as many minutes than his teammate over the last eight games and is averaging 15.1 points and 10.9 rebounds during that stretch.

Before scoring 19 with 11 boards in Wednesday's 92-77 victory over Milwaukee, Gortat had reached a career high in points in each of the three previous games.

"I already said many times, my confidence is pretty big right now," Gortat said. "I have a lot of fun from playing basketball, my mind is really free right now, comparing to the ex-team. It's just fun.

"Playing with Steve Nash, he's going to always find you. I would say he's 50 percent, at least 50 percent, of the success for me."

The 6-foot-11 Gortat has also given the Suns (23-24) a much-needed defensive presence in the post.

Phoenix, winner of eight of 11, is among the league's worst in giving up 106.3 points per game, but it is allowing 83.3 over the last three. The Suns held the Bucks to 31.1 percent shooting.

The Suns, whose last four-game winning streak at US Airways Center was an eight-game run March 14-April 13, had their six-game home win streak against Oklahoma City snapped with a 117-113 loss Dec. 23, 2009.

Durant led all scorers with 38 points in that game, and he's averaging 34.3 as these teams have split their last four meetings.

Green, Ibaka help Thunder escape 111-107 over Suns

PHOENIX (AP) Oklahoma City need not have a monster game from Kevin Durant to win. There is young talent aplenty around him on a team that's a season-high 15 games above .500.

Jeff Green scored 28 points and Serge Ibaka added 18 on 9-of-10 shooting to help the Thunder escape with a 111-107 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Durant, who had at least 40 points in three of his previous four games, added 24 in the Thunder's fourth victory in five games. Russell Westbrook scored 19, including an 11-footer that put Oklahoma City up 107-103 with 34 seconds to go.

"It wasn't just a one-man, two-man game tonight," Durant said. "It was everybody."

Vince Carter scored a season-high 33 for Phoenix, but missed three long-range jumpers down the stretch as Oklahoma City outscored the Suns 12-5 over the last 2 1/2 minutes. No other player scored more than 13 for the Suns.

Carter was 1-of-7 shooting in the fourth quarter, missing his last five attempts.

Channing Frye scored 13 but made only 5-of-17 shots. Grant Hill and Steve Nash added 12 apiece for Phoenix.

Oklahoma City tied it at 97 after Hill was whistled for a foul on Durant. Hill and Nash drew technical fouls from referee David Guthrie for complaining about what replays showed to be a dubious call. Durant made only two of the four free throws, though, and Hill's 3-pointer with 3:22 to play put Phoenix back ahead 100-97.

Ibaka's tip-in cut it to 100-99, then Nash made two free throws to put Phoenix ahead 102-99 with 2:38 to go.

The Thunder followed with an 8-1 run, capped by Westbrook's jumper in the lane. Nash's driving layup with 16 seconds to go cut it to 107-105, then Durant and Westbrook put the game away at the foul line, despite loud complaints from Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry that Durant should have been called for traveling before he was fouled.

"Just give them the game," Gentry complained.

Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, made just 2-of-7 shots in the second half, one of them on an offensive basket interference call against Frye.

Ibaka, in his second NBA season from the Republic of the Congo, scored six in the decisive late surge, including a sweet turnaround 11-footer.

"Serge is a big part of what we do and our success," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "He works and continues to get better. His energy and focus tonight was as well as he could possibly play. He made nearly every shot and they were all big shots down the stretch."

Down 69-64 after Durant's only basket of the third quarter, Phoenix outscored the Thunder 19-7 to go up 83-76 with 2:06 left in the period. The last 12 points of the run came on 3-pointers, two by Carter and one apiece by Hill and Nash. Phoenix led 87-80 entering the fourth quarter.

"Obviously we've got to do a little bit better job defensively in the fourth quarter," Gentry said, "but we also missed a bunch of shots that could've given us a little separation or could've kept us right there in the game."

Carter made all five of his shots, two of them 3-pointers, in a 15-point first quarter.

Neither team led by more than five in the second quarter and the Thunder were up 63-60 at the half.

Notes: After speculation that Nash could be named to the NBA All-Star game to replace injured Yao Ming, the spot went to Minnesota's Kevin Love. The Suns are without a player in the game for the first time since 2004. ... Phoenix guard Goran Dragic missed his third game in a row after cutting his left foot stepping on a piece of broken glass at his home, requiring nine stitches. ... Durant is his franchise's first All-Star starter since Gary Payton in 1998. ... Carter's previous high this season was 29 against New York on Jan. 7.

THE FACTS: The Suns had a chance to get back to the .500 mark for the first time since mid-December and crawl to within a game of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. But a six-point lead with 6:30 left to play disintegrated in a hail of missed shots and frustration over whistles and the Thunder atoned for a poor third quarter with 31 points in the fourth.

Kevin Durant was held to 24 points but he had help from Jeff Green, who had 28, and 19 points and 11 assists from Russell Westbrook as the Thunder closed out a tight game good defense and timely offense.

'Russ did a great job, James [Harden] and Jeff and I just tried to follow the lead," Durant said. "I didn't want to force anything on the offensive end. I just try to help my team as much as I can."

Westbrook, who was named a Western Conference All-Star reserve, held Steve Nash to 12 points and eight assists in the head-to-head battle. Vince Carter had his best scoring game as a Sun with 33 points, but 30 of them came in the first three quarters and his missed a handful of wide-open looks in the fourth quarter when Phoenix was desperate for a basket.

"The shot I missed were wide open. Maybe if they had guarded me closer I would have made them," Carter said.

QUOTABLE: "We battled and we closed the game and that's always a key for us, closing games. We know we can score with any team in the league, but we have to defend. This was a tough win for us against a tough team and we fought through."

THE STAT: Carter had his first 30-point game in nearly a year (he had 48 points for Orlando against New Orleans on Feb. 8, 2010) and made 10-for-14 from the field including five 3-pointers in seven tries. But in the fourth quarter, Carter missed six of seven shots and four of five 3-pointers as the Suns shot 30 percent (6-for-20) and were outscored 31-20.

TURNING POINT: The Suns led 94-88 with 6:30 left to play when the Thunder went on a 9-3 run aided by a questionable goaltending call against Channing Frye and back-to-back technical fouls against Nash and Grant Hill for protesting a Hill foul against Durant.

QUOTABLE II: "I felt the momentum change with those techs. Steve [Nash] didn't say anything and they gave him a tech and then I told him Steve didn't say anything and they gave me a tech. [Referee] Mike Callahan, who I have a lot of respect for, he was his usual consistent, steady self tonight ... and I'll just leave it at that."

STAT II: Durant came into the game with three 40-point games in his last four, but was held to 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting and didn't not make a 3-pointer (0-for-2). It was only the ninth time this season and the fifth time in the last 29 games that Durant scored 24 points or fewer. But his 24 points and 11 rebounds were enough to get the Thunder the win.

NOTABLE: The combined NBA experience of Oklahoma City's starting lineup of Durant (three years), Green (three), Nenad Kristic (six), Thabo Sefolosha (four) and Westbrook (two) is just two more than Suns starting forward Grant Hill (16). Three Phoenix starters -- Hill, Nash (14) and Carter (12) have 42 years of experience between them.

NOTABLE II: Nash attempted his 2,199th 3-pointer as a Sun Friday, leaving him one shy of current Phoenix assistant coach Dan Majerle for the franchise lead. Nash is already the Suns all-time leader in 3-point field goals made (968) and percentage (.440).
