The Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks appear to be going in opposite directions heading into a weekend in which they meet twice.

The surging 76ers look for their eighth win in 11 games Friday night when they try to hand the Knicks a sixth straight road loss.

Philadelphia (22-26) has used its surge to pull within three games of sixth-place New York (25-23) in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers lead the NBA in bench points with 39.8 per game and have showcased their youth and athleticism since starting 3-13 under first-year coach Doug Collins.

The Knicks, who will host the 76ers on Sunday, have dropped eight of 11. New York is seeking its first winning record in 10 seasons with the addition of All-Star Amare Stoudemire, and it won eight straight on the road in one stretch before four of its last five away from home have been against teams with winning records.

"I think we still have to beat the teams we're supposed to beat," Stoudemire said. "We've got a couple games coming up here that we feel we've got a great chance to win. And we just have to make sure we capitalize off of them."

Philadelphia may not necessarily be a team that New York is supposed to beat. The 76ers won 106-96 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 7 by placing five players in double-figure scoring.

Philadelphia is playing even better now, winning 106-92 at New Jersey on Wednesday. Lou Williams scored 26 points and Jrue Holiday had 11 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his first career triple-double.

"Jrue Holiday had his first triple-double so we gave him the game ball," Collins said. "Elton Brand got some big rebounds for us. Lou Williams came off the bench and did a great job for us. A lot of good stuff for us tonight."

The Sixers have five players who average in double figures, including reserves Williams and Thaddeus Young. Williams and Holiday each scored 19 points in the first meeting with the Knicks.

New York had its three-game home win streak snapped with Wednesday's 113-97 loss to Dallas. Stoudemire finished with 21 points but missed all five shots in a scoreless second half before leaving for good as the game got out of hand.

"The shots were good looks," Stoudemire said. "There are just some nights like this where you miss your shots, but I think collectively in the second half, we just didn't come out with good energy."

The Knicks did not play like the team that averages a conference-best 106.5 points. Raymond Felton's shooting slump continued as he made 4 of 14 shots for 11 points, dropping to 33.3 percent from the field in his last 10 games.

"We're going to have to be more aggressive on the defensive end and get into people and want it a little more than them," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "You know, they're an older, experienced team and they ran harder than we did, didn't seem like they got tired."

New York's Wilson Chandler is expected to return to the lineup after missing the last three games with a sore left calf. He is third on the team with 16.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Knicks won both meetings in Philadelphia last season after losing their previous nine visits.

76ers rally in 4th, top Knicks 100-98

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Elton Brand hopes he delivered a sneak preview of playoff basketball for the 76ers.

With more dominant performances in front of a large and loud crowd, they might be there.

Brand scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Philadelphia used a 15-0 run late in the fourth quarter to beat the New York Knicks 100-98 on Friday night.

Brand has been the 76ers' MVP.

He hit 30 points for the first time in three years with the Sixers and continued a sensational comeback season. His career derailed by injuries and ineffectiveness the first two years of an $80 million, five-year deal, Brand has done all he can to prove this year he's no bust.

"Definitely a long time coming," Brand said. "Important game, game that means something. It's February. We're in playoff position right now. It's absolutely what I came for."

Andre Iguodala had 18 points, a career-high 16 assists and no turnovers, and Jodie Meeks scored 14 for the Sixers, who are trying to catch the Knicks for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"When we play, we expect to win," coach Doug Collins said.

The rematch of the home-and-home series is Sunday.

The Knicks seemingly had the game under control in the fourth until they self-destructed during a scoreless stretch that lasted more than 6 minutes and let the Sixers race into the lead.

Brand scored 19 points in the first quarter, then chipped in with big buckets in the fourth to send a rare energetic crowd of 18,823 into a frenzy. Fans have reason to cheer: Philadelphia has gone 20-13 after a 3-13 start.

Raymond Felton led the Knicks with 26 points and Amare Stoudemire had 21. Danilo Gallinari had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Shawne Williams' 3 in the final seconds made it 100-98, but he missed the game-tying runner as the clock expired and the Knicks lost their sixth straight road game.

"It should have been a no-brainer to shoot the 3," Williams said. "It was a mistake on my part. The next time, I'll shoot it."

The Knicks took control in the third quarter behind Felton's stellar performance, then completely collapsed for most of the fourth.

Brand's putback off his own miss and Thaddeus Young's one-handed dunk off Lou Williams' miss made it a one-point deficit. Lou Williams had a steal and slam for an 87-86 lead and Iguodala buried his first 3 of the game, quickly turning a five-point hole into a four-point lead.

Brand swished a jumper for a season-high 29 points and Iguodala followed with a pull-up jumper.

Then a bigger rarity: A nearly full house was rocking again for the Sixers heading into a timeout.

Felton ended the run and a 6 minute, 17-second scoreless stretch with a basket.

The Knicks hold a two-game lead over Philadelphia for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. It was about as big a game as teams with a combined 48 wins in February could play, especially in a city where NBA enthusiasm has been dormant.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was talking playoffs before the game. He doesn't care if the Knicks are the sixth, seventh or eighth seed, as long as they're playing in the postseason. Collins, who early last month was showing his team conference standings as a motivational ploy, insisted he wasn't thinking about any game beyond the Knicks.

He is glad the 76ers are least in the playoff conversation after the woeful start.

"All of a sudden, people are talking about us with a sense of relevancy," he said.

No coincidence, Brand's comeback has coincided with Philadelphia's.

Brand about had the game of his Sixers career in one quarter, making 7-of-8 shots for 19 points. The Sixers made 12 of their first 16 shots and raced to a 14-point lead.

"That's the player I wanted to be when I came here," Brand said.

The bulk of the buckets came courtesy of Iguodala. He had 10 assists and no points at one point in the second quarter and didn't make his first field goal until the third.

Knicks fans flocked to Philadelphia, serenading Stoudemire with "MVP!" chants and they roared over the muted Sixers faithful on Timofey Mozgov's thunderous dunk that capped a comeback for a 40-39 lead. They led 52-51 at the break.

Then the Knicks got rolling. Felton was phenomenal in the third with 15 points and helping the Knicks lead 82-73.

It just wasn't enough.

"We had a chance to win, we should have played with more energy," Stoudemire said. "Once we came back and took the lead, we let down. We've done that before and we've got to correct it."

Notes: Knicks F Wilson Chandler scored three points after missing three games with a sore left calf. ... Brand's 18 double-doubles are one more than he had combined the first two years in Philadelphia. It was his highest point total since April 12, 2007, when he played for the Clippers.

Knicks-Sixers notebook

THE FACTS: Elton Brand scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while Andre Iguodala had 18 points, a career-high 16 assists and no turnovers for the suddenly surging 76ers in their 100-98 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday. Jodie Meeks contributed 14 points and the Sixers (23-26) won their third straight. It was quite an impressive performance, especially considering they trailed by nine heading into the fourth quarter. Their defense improved markedly and they were rewarded with a huge victory over their Atlantic Division rival.

Raymond Felton paced the Knicks with 26 points and nine assists while Danilo Gallinari scored 18 points and swept 13 rebounds. Amazingly, the Knicks rallied from a late 10-point deficit at the end and even had a chance to send the game into overtime. But Shawne Williams' short runner from the baseline clanged off the rim. The Knicks fell to 25-24 and dropped their sixth consecutive road game.

QUOTABLE: "I told our guys in the fourth quarter that I thought that was as tough as we've been all season long."

THE STAT: Good teams make their free throws. The Sixers were 17-for-18.

TURNING POINT: Trailing 82-73 entering the fourth quarter, the Sixers turned the tables with a 23-4 run to take a 96-86 lead with 3:13 left. Iguodala and Brand led the surge for the Sixers, who seemed to gain confidence when they re-took the lead.

HOT: Brand was sensational, going 14-for-23 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

NOT: Wilson Chandler and Toney Douglas were each 1-for-6 for the Knicks. Not good enough.

QUOTABLE II: "It was a tough one. We've got to be concentrating now on the next one and get ready for Sunday."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: It has to be Iguodala, who filled up the stat sheet once again. He continues to play at a very high level.

INSIDE THE ARENA: A meaningful Knicks-76ers game in February brought out a very spirited crowd of 18,823 to the Wells Fargo Center. There was a smattering of Knicks fans, and it was fun to see the reactions back and forth between both teams' fans.

QUOTABLE III: "I was hot and feeling it. Guys kept feeding me and feeding me."

GOOD MOVE: Coach Collins started Evan Turner to begin the fourth quarter. Turner's defense was solid, and he even sparked the Sixers offensively at the beginning of the quarter.

BAD MOVE: Felton could have made a bigger difference, especially in crunch time. He hurt the Sixers for much of the game, but didn't have the ball in his hands nearly enough down the stretch. Williams took the final shot when the Knicks needed to head into overtime.

ROOKIE WATCH: Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft from Ohio State, had four points and three assists for the Sixers. Landry Fields scored five points and added seven rebounds while 7-foot-1 Timofey Mozgov was active with nine points and seven rebounds for the Knicks.

NOTABLE: Iguodala tied a Sixers record with nine assists in the first quarter. Only three other players in franchise history have ever compiled nine assists in one quarter -- Maurice Cheeks, Johnny Dawkins and Eric Snow.

DID YOU NOTICE: Thaddeus Young, who scored 10 points, sacrificed his body and took two big-time charges in the fourth. Those kinds of plays help to win games.
