The Memphis Grizzlies are coming off their best month in six seasons. A matchup with the woeful Minnesota Timberwolves could help the Grizzlies get off to a good start in February.

Memphis looks to match a season high with a fourth consecutive victory when it hosts the Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

After a 6-9 December dropped them to the bottom of the Southwest Division, the Grizzlies (25-24) capped an 11-6 January with a 100-97 home win over Orlando on Monday. The team posted its highest victory total in a month since January 2005, when it went 12-3.

Memphis' 6-1 stretch has lifted the team above .500 for the first time since it improved to 2-1 with a 109-89 victory over Minnesota on Oct. 30.

"I thought the overall effort by the whole team was great. We were playing with incredible energy," coach Lionel Hollins said Monday after becoming the franchise's all-time leader with 96 wins.

The Grizzlies are 3-0 since guard O.J. Mayo was suspended 10 games for violating the league's anti-drug policy. Mayo led Memphis with 29 points in the last meeting with the Timberwolves.

Point guard Mike Conley has been playing particularly well in Mayo's absence. He had 26 points and 11 assists Monday, giving him consecutive double-digit assist games for the first time in his career.

Conley had 14 points, 11 assists and a career high-tying seven steals Oct. 30. The Grizzlies recorded a franchise-best 22 steals in that matchup as they moved to 4-1 in their last five versus the Timberwolves.

Minnesota (11-36), winner of four of the last six meetings with Memphis at the Target Center, ended a six-game skid with a 103-87 victory over Toronto on Saturday.

The Timberwolves allow a league-high 108.6 points per game, but held the Raptors to 33.7 percent shooting in one of their better defensive efforts of the season.

"We need to continue to do that," forward Kevin Love said after scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. "We know there'll be some games when we'll be lacking that here and there, but if we can keep taking the right step forward on that end of the floor we're only going to get better."

If Minnesota is going to win two straight for the first time since Dec. 26-27, it may need another big game from Love, who leads the league with 15.6 rebounds per game and 42 double-doubles. He had 14 points and 13 boards Oct. 30, although Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph sat out with a right hip contusion.

Randolph is coming off a subpar game, scoring 10 points and shooting 4 of 11 with nine rebounds Monday. He failed to notch a 15th consecutive double-double and recorded his lowest point total since Dec. 21.

Love had 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench in the teams' last matchup in Minnesota, a 109-102 Timberwolves victory Feb. 6.

Grizzlies leading scorer Rudy Gay, averaging 23.3 points and 55.7 percent shooting in the last four games versus Minnesota, has shot 7 of 26 and scored 17 points over the last two contests.

Memphis' last four-game winning streak was Dec. 8-15.

Gay, Randolph lead Grizzlies over Timberwolves

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Midway through the fourth quarter, Zach Randolph bulled his way to a rebound and accidentally loosened Kevin Love's tooth with a meaty elbow to Love's jaw.

It was the literal example of what Randolph had been doing metaphorically to Love all night long.

Randolph had 23 points and 13 boards and Rudy Gay had 22 points, seven assists and seven rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 102-84 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Sam Young scored 18 points and the Grizzlies dominated the league's best rebounding team on the boards, 47-38, to win their fourth straight game.

"I took it as a little challenge to come out and play good," Randolph said of his matchup with Love, the league's top rebounder. "Kevin is having a tremendous year. When I was in Portland, he was watching me, grew up looking up to me. It was an important win. The young fella's got a lot of talent, plays hard and has a great work ethic."

And the Timberwolves (11-37) have a long way to go.

Michael Beasley scored 19 points and Love had just 10 points and 10 rebounds, narrowly getting his 34th straight double-double. Love is hoping to make the Western Conference All-Star team, but he was thoroughly outplayed by Randolph, one of his primary competitors for a spot.

The Grizzlies limited Love to four points on 1-for-4 shooting in the first three quarters, opening up a 22-point lead that turned the fourth quarter into garbage time.

"To say we played poorly was an understatement," said Love, who will have X-rays on his tooth on Thursday.

The Grizzlies are the best team in the league at forcing turnovers, and they feasted on the mistake-prone Timberwolves all night. They scored 26 points off 17 Minnesota turnovers and improved to a season-best two games over .500 (26-24).

Beating the worst team in the West wouldn't seem to be a big deal, but it actually was a sign of progress for the young and improving Grizzlies. They have had a tendency to play down to their competition this season, losing to Golden State, Washington, Cleveland, Sacramento and New Jersey twice.

But this game was never in doubt.

Memphis ripped off a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way. They put the game away with a 30-16 third quarter.

"In the beginning (of the year), these are the kind of games we would have lost, but I still think we have room to get better," Gay said. "Sky's the limit."

Gay showed everyone why the Timberwolves tried to sign the restricted free agent this summer. The smooth small forward, who signed a max contract to stay in Memphis, did a little bit of everything, getting to the bucket, knocking down 3-pointers and scoring in transition.

"I was really serious," Gay said of his consideration of the Timberwolves last summer. "I was on my way here when I got my offer. It was definitely on my mind, thinking about being a Timberwolf."

It looks like he made the right decision. Randolph and Marc Gasol took care of Love down low, muscling him out off the block and rendering him obsolete for most of the game.

The burly Randolph had eight points and six boards in the first half, and more importantly limited Love to just two points and four boards on the other end.

"The ball didn't seem to find me tonight," Love said. "I couldn't tell you what it was. I never got into a rhythm."

The Timberwolves were listless all game, delivering an uninspired performance despite coming off a win over Toronto on Saturday, a day off on Sunday and two practices to prepare for this game.

Darko Milicic had three points on 1-for-6 shooting with two rebounds and five turnovers in 20 minutes and Wes Johnson had just four points on 2-for-11 shooting.

"This was bad tonight," said point guard Jonny Flynn, who started his first game of the season. "This was really bad tonight."

Notes: Memphis coach Lionel Hollins' son Austin is a freshman at the University of Minnesota. But dad said he doesn't watch his son play very often "because I don't like college basketball." Lionel said he gets frustrated by the slow pace. ... Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak sat in for a portion of the television broadcast to tout the plan for renovating Target Center. The city and the Wolves are asking for $155 million to update the 21-year-old facility. ... The Wolves played without PG Luke Ridnour, who missed the game to tend to a family matter.

Grizzlies-Wolves Notebook

THE FACTS: If the Memphis Grizzlies didn't need O. J. Mayo to defeat the Orlando Magic, it didn't seem likely that they would need him to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves. They didn't. They followed up their impressive victory against Orlando on Monday night by throttling the listless Timberwolves, 102-84. Memphis is now 4-0 without Mayo, who is serving a 10 game suspension for violating the league's substance policy. Zach Randolph scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Rudy Gay added 22 points as Memphis out-shot, out-rebounded, out-defended, and thoroughly out-played Minnesota.

QUOTABLE: "We played pretty strong defense, we forced them into 17 turnovers and scored 27 points off those turnovers with 12 steals. I was worried with the lead we had at halftime. We came out and started trading buckets with them but we got two or three steals and we got a stop with a rebound and got running to a 20-21 point lead. From that point on we just maintained."

THE STAT: Memphis won the statistical battle in two significant ways. First, they grabbed 12 steals and turned 17 Minnesota turnovers into 26 points. Memphis came into the game leading the league in forced turnovers (16.8) and second in steals (9.1). Second, they out-rebounded Minnesota 55-44, despite the fact that Minnesota leads the league in rebounding.

TURNING POINT: After leading by eight at half, Memphis took possession of the game with an 18-4 run in the third quarter. With that run they built a 20 point lead and never looked back. Minnesota didn't get within 17 for the rest of the game.

QUOTABLE II: "We clearly didn't come out ready to play this ball game. We weren't focused on the areas that we have to focus on in order to win a game at one of the league leaders in creating turnovers, scoring off turnovers, (and) points in the paint."

NOTABLE: This game featured two of the four players averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Love averages 21.6 points per game and 15.6 rebounds per game and Zach Randolph averages 20.0 and 13.2. But tonight Randolph won this battle decisively. He outscored, out-rebounded, and frustrated Love on both ends of the court all night. Love scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, barely keeping alive his streak of 34 straight games with a double-double. That streak is the longest such streak since Kevin Garnett recorded 37 straight double-doubles in 2006.
