Raptors-Pacers Preview

The Toronto Raptors have lost 11 straight games, but it wasn't hard to picture Jay Triano's team struggling as it moves on without Chris Bosh.

In the midst of a fourth straight disappointing season under Jim O'Brien, the Indiana Pacers decided they've seen enough.

A day after firing O'Brien, the Pacers go forward with interim coach Frank Vogel on Monday night when they look to send the Raptors to their longest losing streak in more than eight years.

Indiana (17-27) went 104-142 in O'Brien's first three seasons on the sidelines - failing to make the playoffs - but there was some optimism after a 9-7 start that included road wins against Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Any potential progress has disappeared. The Pacers are 8-20 since the beginning of December, and Saturday's 110-89 loss at Chicago - their seventh in eight games - dropped them two games behind Charlotte for the Eastern Conference's No. 8 seed.

O'Brien was ejected late in the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical, and that turned out to be his last act as coach. Indiana replaced him Sunday and handed the reigns to Vogel, who was also O'Brien's assistant in Philadelphia and Boston.

"We've been looking at everything with our team, from the beginning of the season and now at the halfway mark and I think at this time a change is necessary," said team president Larry Bird, who said Vogel will give more playing time to youngsters Paul George and Lance Stephenson while continuing to play Tyler Hansbrough.

"This isn't all on Jim. All of us share in the responsibility for where we're at and where we need to go."

Vogel might not have to wait long to earn his first win. Toronto (13-35) hit rock bottom Saturday at Minnesota, shooting a season-worst 33.7 percent in a 103-87 loss to the last-place Timberwolves.

A loss Monday would give the Raptors their first 12-game skid since Dec. 18, 2002-Jan. 10, 2003 - the season before they drafted Bosh.

"In life you deal with adversity. You grow as a person, and as a basketball player," said rookie forward Ed Davis, who had 15 points off the bench. "I'm just taking it as a learning experience."

Toronto averaged 101.0 points in its first 37 games, but it's put up just 93.7 points per game during the losing streak. Leading scorer Andrea Bargnani has played a big role in his team's recent struggles, shooting 35.2 percent over his last eight games.

"Andrea is a little bit out of sync," Triano told the NBA's official website. "Sometimes when he has a shot he doesn't take it. He's thinking about it too much."

The Raptors certainly need Bargnani to play well to win. They're 12-14 when he scores 18 or more points and 0-16 when he's held to 17 or fewer.

Toronto's defense was out of sync when they visited Conseco Fieldhouse on Dec. 6. The Pacers shot 55.3 percent and put seven players in double figures in a 124-100 win, led by Brandon Rush's 26 points off the bench.

Rush is currently out with a sprained right ankle.

Indiana has averaged 120.0 points in five straight home victories over the Raptors, averaging an impressive 48.4 points in the paint.

Roy Hibbert had 13 points in the first meeting, but he's been a major disappointment of late in the Pacers' frontcourt. A public target of criticism from O'Brien, Hibbert averaged just 6.9 points in Indiana's last 11 losses, shooting 34.4 percent.

Vogel doesn't expect that to continue.

"I expect his game to take off," he said Sunday.

Hansbrough is questionable after missing the last two games with pneumonia.

Pacers defeat Raptors in Vogel's coaching debut

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Pacers president Larry Bird had two points of emphasis when he introduced interim coach Frank Vogel: he expected more wins and wanted to see the team's young guys play a key role in getting them.

He got both on Monday. Third-year center Roy Hibbert had 24 points and 11 rebounds to help Indiana beat the Toronto Raptors 104-93 in Vogel's debut.

Jim O'Brien was fired on Sunday, and a day later, Vogel got the game ball. The new coach talked his players out of a different celebration.

"They threatened to dump my head into some of their little ice buckets where they sink their ankles into," Vogel said. "And then they threatened to dump those on me. And I said 'there's two of them, so whoever dumps me is going to get one themselves.' So they did not do that."

The game ball could have gone to Hibbert. The 7-foot-2 center from Georgetown started the season well, but fell out of favor with O'Brien when he began to struggle. Vogel promised to let Hibbert play through his mistakes, and he rewarded his new coach with his highest-scoring game since Nov. 28.

"It was an emphasis tonight of, 'Roy, get in the post, get in the post,"' Hibbert said. "I don't think I made a lot of plays from the foul line area and the thing was, if you have a seven-footer, put them down low and make some plays."

That wasn't all for Indiana's youngsters.

Second-year point guard Darren Collison and rookie Paul George scored 16 points, and second-year forward Tyler Hansbrough added 14.

George scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

"Paul George was a pleasant surprise," Vogel said. "He played well enough to go with him down the stretch, and to go with a rookie down the stretch in your first game was a little bit of a leap of faith for me. He earned it, and I felt confident that he was the right guy to have in the game."

Toronto's losing streak increased to 12 games. The Raptors gave up 100 or more points for the eighth straight contest.

Amir Johnson led Toronto with 18 points, and Jose Calderon and Ed Davis added 13. Andrea Bargnani, Toronto's leading scorer this season, finished with 12 points on 3-for-15 shooting.

"We have to be frustrated," Calderon said. "Everybody is thinking we want to win. We have to keep working and take the positive parts. We just have to keep working and stay together."

An off night by Danny Granger, Indiana's top scorer, didn't slow the Pacers. Granger scored 11 points, but the Pacers outrebounded the Raptors 56-38 to make up for committing 25 turnovers.

Indiana led 48-28 in the second quarter before the Raptors went on a 13-0 run that helped them trim the Pacers' advantage to 51-45 at halftime.

Toronto scored the first six points of the second half to tie the score at 51, but Hibbert made two straight baskets to give Indiana the lead again. Granger scored seven points in a run that pushed the Pacers' lead to 67-59. The Pacers led 75-70 at the end of the third quarter.

"Sometimes how you handle a run by the other team is not so much making an adjustment or putting Band-Aids on what's bleeding on defense," Vogel said. "Sometimes the best way to stop a run is to hit a bucket. I just focused on how we can execute more offensively."

Hibbert scored in close, then made two free throws to extend Indiana's lead to 91-82 with just under six minutes remaining. A long pass from Josh McRoberts turned into a dynamic one-handed alley-oop jam by George that pushed the lead to 11 points.

The crowd, sparse because of a winter storm, gave the Pacers two standing ovations in the final minute.

The Pacers feel they are off to a good start on their mission to get back into the playoff race.

"We played a little bit more loose," Granger said. "When you have a new situation, there's always an initial excitement about it, but we have to make sure we carry it over."

Notes: Attendance was officially 10,258, but far fewer than that number showed up. ... Indiana shot 57 percent in the first quarter to lead 32-21. ... Toronto missed all four of its 3-point tries in the first half and made just one in the game. ... Pacers G Brandon Rush sat out with a sprained right ankle. ... THE FACTS: Roy Hibbert had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and the Indiana Pacers beat the visiting Toronto Raptors, 104-93, to give interim coach Frank Vogel a victory in his debut Monday.

Hibbert, a third-year center who has struggled lately after a strong start to the season, shot 9 of 19 for Indiana, which squandered a 20-point first-half lead before leading much of the second half.

Darren Collison added 16 points and six assists for Indiana, which fired former coach Jim O'Brien Sunday following three-and-a-half seasons.

Amir Johnson had 18 points to lead seven players in double figures for Toronto, which trailed 48-28 with 5:12 remaining in the second half before outscoring Indiana 17-3 to make it a six point Pacers lead at halftime.

The Raptors then scored the first six points of the second half to tie it 51-51, but Hibbert tipped in an offensive rebound on the ensuing possession and Indiana never trailed again.

The Pacers had lost seven of their previous eight games and the Raptors have lost a season-high 12 consecutive games.

THE STAT: The Pacers played with energy and focus -- as might be expected from a team with its coach in his first game. Indiana not only shot 40 percent from 3-point range -- 8 of 20 -- the Pacers out-rebounded Toronto, 56-38, and had 19 assists to 16 for Toronto. The Pacers did have 25 turnovers, but Vogel said he expects that statistic to improve with the offense he plans to run.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers never trailed in the second half, but even after they regained the lead early in the third quarter, they didn't secure the victory until late in the game. Indiana led 87-82 with 6:19 remaining, then an 8-0 run pushed the lead to 95-82 and all-but clinched the victory with 4:47 remaining. Hibbert had four points and two steals during the run, and Vogel said it was Hibbert's defensive play late that altered the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "We have to be frustrated. Everybody is thinking we want to win. We have to keep working and take the positive parts. We just have to keep working and stay together."

HOT: While Vogel said after the game that Collison might have been pressing a bit -- he had six turnovers -- the second-year point guard also shot 7 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.

NOT: Indiana shot 44.4 percent as a team from the field, but that area wasn't helped by forward Danny Granger. He finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists, but shot 3 of 15 from the field, including 1 of 6 from 3-point range.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Vogel said before the game a change moving forward will be committing to Josh McRoberts and Tyler Hansbrough at the small forward position. McRoberts started Monday, partly because Hansbrough had been out with pneumonia, but Hansbrough continued to show improvement, providing energy and finishing with 14 points and six rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: For Hibbert, it was moving McRoberts into the starting lineup. The third-year center has played better alongside McRoberts, partly because McRoberts moves around on the floor more than most of the players Indiana plays at the position. Hibbert seemed to thrive again with McRoberts present.

ROOKIE WATCH: Pacers rookie Paul George continues to emerge as a solid player for the franchise's future. On Wednesday, he made several flashy athletic plays, finishing with 16 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

QUOTABLE III: "We didn't play great and we won. This is a good basketball team. We're capable of being a great basketball team."

NOTABLE: Hibbert's double-double was his 13th of the season, but just his second in the last 11 games. . . . The Pacers' 56 rebounds were a season-high. . . . The Pacers had emphasized a small lineup throughout the last month under O'Brien. Vogel said a move away from that approach will be a major change moving forward. . . . The Raptors shot 1 of 6 from 3-point range. . . . Vogel said the Pacers put in nothing new offensively Monday because he believed the one-day turnaround after taking over for O'Brien didn't provide time to do so.
