The banged-up Utah Jazz overcame the absence of Deron Williams to end their longest losing streak in more than three years. The star point guard may not be needed again if his team can get another outstanding effort from his replacement.

Williams will be a game-time decision when Utah tries to end a five-game road skid Sunday night against the struggling Golden State Warriors.

Earl Watson made his first start of the season Friday in place of Williams and had a career-high 13 assists in a 108-100 win over Minnesota. That snapped a six-game skid for the Jazz (28-19), their longest slide since dropping six in a row Dec. 4-14, 2007.

"When you get easy baskets in transition and get layups, it gives the guys confidence," Watson said. "It builds a rhythm and builds chemistry and makes everything easy."

While Williams sat out with a hyperextended right wrist suffered Wednesday, Watson's energy even wore out his teammates.

"He got a lot of us tired a little bit, but it's for a good cause," said forward Paul Millsap, who scored a game-high 30 points.

The Jazz and Warriors have split two meetings this season and Watson played sparingly in both, totaling two points. Williams has averaged 26.5 points in the two matchups.

Williams is among a number of hurting Jazz. Millsap has a severely bruised thumb while guard Raja Bell has shoulder and neck problems, although he will be able to play against the Warriors.

Center Mehmet Okur won't travel with the team to California after straining his lower back in the first half Friday.

"It's been a tough few weeks for us," Millsap said. "It just feels good to get back on the winning side. We've got a lot of positive attitudes in here and everybody feels good with this win."

The Warriors aren't feeling nearly as good.

Golden State (19-27) lost its fourth straight Friday, blowing a 16-point lead and falling 121-113 in overtime to Charlotte. Former Warrior Stephen Jackson's tying 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left in regulation sent the game to an extra period, during which Golden State was outscored 20-12.

The Warriors fell to 0-3 on a season-high eight-game homestand.

"Being young, inexperienced, understanding how important every possession is, you don't take quick shots or bad shots," coach Keith Smart said. "You have to finish plays around the basket."

Monta Ellis is fourth in the league with 25.7 points per game, but he's averaged 14.8 in 14 career meetings with Utah - his second-lowest average against any team. His 37.4 field-goal percentage in those contests represents his lowest versus any opponent.

Stephen Curry had 27 points Friday and has averaged 25.4 in his last five. He missed the Warriors' 108-95 loss to the Jazz on Dec. 13 because of a sprained ankle, but scored 20 in an 85-78 win over Utah on Nov. 5.

The 78 points allowed in that contest are the fewest given up by the Warriors since a 91-78 win over the Jazz on Nov. 25, 2006. Golden State is allowing 107.0 points per game, second most in the NBA.

Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko had his best game in nearly six years with a season-high 27 points Friday. He hadn't scored that many since a 28-point performance March 19, 2005.

The Jazz have won four of the last five meetings with the Warriors.

Warriors snap four-game skid, beat Jazz 96-81

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Monta Ellis sat stoically on the Golden State bench in the fourth quarter, a towel draped over his head and an emotionless expression. Even he looked stunned.

The only thing perhaps more surprising than his performance was the outcome.

Stephen Curry had 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds and the Warriors overcame Ellis' horrendous shooting performance to beat the undermanned Utah Jazz 96-81 on Sunday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

"It was one of those rare nights where everybody had to pick him up," Curry said.

Even rarer was that they did.

Dorell Wright scored 16 points, and Reggie Williams added 15 to help the Warriors build a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter while Ellis was on the bench. Ellis, averaging a team-high 25 points, was held to a season-low two points on 1-for-9 shooting in 31 minutes.

Warriors coach Keith Smart figured it was just "one of those nights" in the grueling NBA season.

"It rained today. Why did it rain? Blame it on the rain. I don't know why," Smart said. "But I think that's why you try to formulate a basketball team so you don't rely on one particular player."

If only the Jazz could do the same without their star.

Al Jefferson had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Andrei Kirilenko had 14 points and nine rebounds for a Jazz team that has lost six straight road games. Utah never seriously challenged in this one with star point guard Deron Williams out with a hyperextended right wrist and center Mehmet Okur sidelined by a strained back.

"We're going through some tough times," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We haven't played with a lot of energy and then Deron gets hurt. We get banged up and that's what happens when you get in situations like that. But that's where you see where the fight is in you and see how bad you really like to play."

The Warriors had to find new ways to win.

They did some of their best work early even with Ellis held scoreless for the first half. Wright made a pair of 3-pointers, and Curry followed with another to lead an 11-2 run late in the first quarter.

Golden State pushed its lead to 14 points in the second behind mostly reserves, although it struggled to keep the pace - at first, anyway - without the starters, and the lack of production from Ellis showed.

The Jazz regained their rhythm after the break and got within three points, smothering the Warriors defensively. They kept Ellis without a point until his only basket with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, and even that took some work: Ellis spun into the lane and made a floating layup over Utah's outstretched front line.

"You could see he wasn't all the way there, whether it was personal or whatever it was. I'm not taking credit for that," Utah guard Raja Bell said.

The Warriors managed just fine without him.

They slowly went ahead 85-67 in the fourth quarter against team that was simply exhausted playing short-handed. It was a rare night when Ellis had such low output and the Warriors still won.

The All-Star hopeful's previous low this season was five points in a 117-89 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 21 when he hardly even played in the second half because it was such a blowout. The last time Ellis scored only two points came against Phoenix on Feb. 4, 2009.

"You have to win a lot of different ways if you want to be successful," Curry said. "Every night's not going to be pretty. Even if everybody is not on their game, you have to find ways to win."

NOTES: The Warriors improved to 2-1 against the Jazz this season. The home team has won each game. They wrap up their season series Feb. 16 in Utah. ... Jazz reserve C Kyrylo Fesenko played the final 8 minutes after missing the previous game because of a sinus infection.

THE FACTS: On a night where Monta Ellis was held to his lowest point total in almost two years, Stephen Curry stepped in with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds Sunday and the Golden State Warriors beat a Utah Jazz team that sorely missed injured All-Star point guard Deron Williams, 96-81. Andris Biedrins had his second double-double in as many games with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Reggie Williams scored 15 points in 17 minutes off the bench for the Warriors, who rebounded after blowing a 16-point lead in a 121-113 loss to Charlotte on Friday. Al Jefferson led Utah with 16 points, but shot 6-for-18 while doing it, emblematic of the Jazz's struggles from the floor.

QUOTABLE: "I guess that answers your question about lingering (feelings) from the last game. I know the pulse of this team. I know these guys, how they perform and try to bounce back as much as they can."

THE STAT: 37.2 percent. Utah's shooting percentage was the team's second-worst this season, lowlighted by Jefferson and C.J. Miles (2-for-11). With Williams out, the Jazz were depending on their remaining point guards -- Earl Watson and Ronnie Price -- to play an up-tempo style, but Utah could only manage 15 fast-break points.

TURNING POINT: With two double-doubles in three days -- after having just one in his first 36 appearances this season -- Biedrins is making Smart's continued loyalty pay off. Sunday, in addition to 5-for-7 shooting and three blocks, he helped hound the Jazz's big-man tandem of Jefferson and Paul Millsap into a combined 11-for-31 night. With those two stars misfiring, Utah didn't lead in the final three quarters. These are Biedrins' first back-to-back double-doubles since Jan. 5-7, 2009.

QUOTABLE II: "I want him to understand that I'm behind him. I didn't go to Latvia (to work with Biedrins and the national team) for three weeks to waste that. I'm committed to get him up. I've got a staff that works with him, but it's also important that I get into his head and work with him one-one."

HOT: Reggie Williams was simply unconscious, drilling fadeaway jumpers at will in going 6-for-6 from the field, including a trio of 3-point shots.

NOT: It's a good thing Reggie Williams came up with that night, because Ellis was held to just two points on 1-for-9 shooting. Ellis, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer, was skunked during 19:33 on the floor in the first half, the first time in 343 career games he'd gone that long in a single half without scoring. His previous longest scoreless stretch in one half was 13:08, coming March 24, 2006.

BAD MOVE: With Deron Williams sidelined by a strained tendon in his right wrist, Utah coach Jerry Sloan didn't have much choice but to play Price as his backup point guard. But the Warriors didn't give any quarter for injury, and Curry turned Price into so much screen-roll fodder, especially in the second half, when Price was paired with the plodding Kyrylo Fesenko. Price finished the night minus-15 in just 16 minutes of play.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors big man Ekpe Udoh garnered his most playing time (21:18) in more than a month, and provided a live body in the paint, if not always under control. Udoh had five rebounds and four points, but also committed five fouls.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Warriors color analyst Jim Barnett was on crutches after injuring his right knee on Saturday. Surgery is possible for the former 11-year NBA veteran, who has worked the Warriors' broadcasts since 1985.

NOTABLE: Warriors forward Lou Amundson set a season-high with four blocks. ... Millsap matched his season high with six assists. ... With the firing of Indiana coach Jim O'Brien, Utah's Jerry Sloan has outlasted another competitor. Since Sloan took over the Jazz on Dec. 9, 1988, 245 coaches have been fired by other NBA teams. Every club has made at least three coaching changes in that time.
