Rockets-Spurs Preview

The San Antonio Spurs haven't lost at home since November, reeling off 17 straight victories to give themselves a healthy cushion atop the Western Conference standings.

They better get a good look at the AT&T Center on Saturday night.

San Antonio tries to extend its impressive home streak against the last-place Houston Rockets before heading out on a nine-game road trip leading up to the All-Star break.

This marks the Spurs' lone home game in a stretch of more than a month, with the team's annual rodeo trip kicking off Tuesday in Portland and spanning nine cities in 17 days leading up to the break.

San Antonio (39-7) has spent the last three games on the road as well, and bounced back from a 96-72 loss to New Orleans last Saturday with two solid victories. Manu Ginobili had a team-high 20 points in a 113-102 win at Golden State on Monday, then led the way again by scoring 26 in a 112-105 victory over Utah on Wednesday.

The Spurs' 10th win in 11 games didn't come without some concerns, though. San Antonio entered the game with a middle-of-the-pack defensive field-goal percentage of 44.9, and the Jazz hit 54.7 percent of their shots.

"We are better offensively this season than we were in our championship seasons. But we need to raise the defensive level to what we had then, and we will be very, very good," Ginobili said.

At home during the streak, the Spurs have been excellent defensively. They've allowed 91.6 points per game and held opponents to 41.9 percent shooting in those 17 victories, their longest at the AT&T Center since a 21-game run from March 3-Dec. 3, 2004.

Both San Antonio home losses have come against Southwest opponents - New Orleans and Dallas - and Houston (22-26) nearly won there Nov. 6. But after rallying from a 13-point, late third-quarter deficit, the Rockets faded in overtime and lost 124-121.

San Antonio was just happy to avoid an embarrassing loss.

"We would be talking about it in three months, tomorrow, next week and in a month," Ginobili said after finishing with 28 points.

The Rockets nearly engineered an even bigger comeback Thursday night in Dallas, but again, couldn't finish. Houston recovered from a 25-point first-half deficit and got within one with under a minute to play, but the Mavericks held on to win 111-106.

Despite his team's second-half resolve, Rockets coach Rick Adelman was not pleased with an opening 24 minutes that Shane Battier called "our worst half of the season."

"There is no time for us not to be mentally engaged," Adelman said. "I don't know what the reason was. It was everybody. I put the second group in and it didn't get any better. I don't know why it took a while for us to wake up."

While Ginobili is concerned the Spurs' defense isn't at a championship level, Houston's is nowhere near it. Dallas shot 50.0 percent Thursday, dropping the Rockets to 9-22 when they allow opponents to shoot at least 45.0 percent.

Guard Kyle Lowry wasn't around for the first meeting, and Houston will likely need he and Battier to contain Ginobili and Tony Parker to have a chance. Parker has averaged 22.4 points and 10.1 assists in his last five games against the Rockets.

Houston, meanwhile, could use a boost from Aaron Brooks, shooting 26.8 percent in his last seven games. Last season's Most Improved Player has averaged 23.3 points - shooting 51.4 percent - in his last four games versus San Antonio.

Spurs ground Rockets for 18th straight home win

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The San Antonio Spurs are the NBA's first team to 40 wins, and got there faster than the four-time champions ever have before.

Maybe three weeks on the road will make things more challenging.

Manu Ginobili scored 22 points and the Spurs hit 40 victories by winning their 18th in a row at home, beating the Houston Rockets 108-95 on Saturday night.

"I'm just speechless right now," said Spurs center DeJuan Blair, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds. "Because it's just such an honor to be on this team, on this quest for greatness, and we've just got to keep it going."

Richard Jefferson added 18 points in what was San Antonio's last game at the AT&T Center for three weeks. The Spurs (40-7) embark on their annual Rodeo Road Trip starting Tuesday, testing the NBA's best record against nine straight road games.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has traditionally used the trip as a distraction-free chance to work out the kinks. But with the NBA's best record, the Spurs have few obvious faults - and are so far ahead in the Southwest Division (9 games) that they could lose every game on the trip and still be at the top.

Luis Scola led the Rockets with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Houston trailed just 76-71 after the third quarter before being buried by a flurry of 3s, and finished the game looking winded a night after nearly overcoming a 25-point deficit in a loss to Dallas.

"They don't beat themselves," Rockets forward Shane Battier said. "We were right there with them for a half. We played pretty good basketball, then we had that lull where we couldn't answer their 3s and their big shots that created separation."

Houston has lost four of six.

Tim Duncan, in jeopardy of missing the All-Star game for the first time in his career, had 12 points and seven rebounds as every Spurs starter was in double figures. Fans didn't vote in Duncan as an All-Star starter for the first time in 11 seasons, and he must wait this week to see whether coaches vote him in as a reserve.

Blair's double-double was his eighth this season. Tony Parker added 17 points and George Hill had 14 as the Spurs moved two wins from tying the franchise record of 20 straight home wins, set during the 1989-90 season.

"You keep competing, executing and trying to improve," Popovich said. "It doesn't matter if you have the best record or the worst record."

Kyle Lowry had 15 points for the Rockets. Houston's road trip won't get any easier: the Rockets head to Los Angeles on Tuesday to play the Lakers, then finish another back-to-back Wednesday at Utah.

Kevin Martin and Chuck Hayes added 10 apiece for Houston.

"We were in the game all they way into the third quarter. But they were too solid. They are too solid," Scola said. "Most solid team in the NBA. They're the best team in the NBA, period."

The Spurs went 5-for-8 behind the 3-point line the fourth, including Ginobili sinking two with a close hand in his face both times.

Hill's 3-pointer with 7:32 left capped a 7-0 Spurs run and stretched the lead to double-digits for good.

Three months into the season, the Spurs are already just 10 wins shy of matching their 50-win total from a season ago.

San Antonio's road trip won't be as grueling a gauntlet as years past, either: Only three of the nine games (Portland, the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago) are against teams with winning records before the Spurs return home Feb. 23 against Oklahoma City.

NOTES: The Spurs recalled rookie swingman James Anderson before the game. The Spurs' first-round pick hasn't played since a stress fracture emerged in his right foot six games into the season. ... Spurs F Matt Bonner missed his seventh straight game with a sore right knee.

THE FACTS: Manu Ginobili scored 22 points, including a pair of key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, as all five Spurs starters scored in double figures in San Antonio's 108-95 victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday in what will be the team's last home game as the rodeo comes to town for the next 25 days. The Spurs (40-7) become the first to hit 40 wins this season, but play their next nine games on the road after winning 17 straight at home. Houston (22-27) had won two of three coming into the game.

QUOTABLE: "We made some shots (San Antonio shot 51 percent) and played solid defense throughout the game, especially in the second half. I think we did a pretty solid job on (Kevin) Martin -- he's impossible to guard. They depend on him to get a lot of scoring done, so that helped us out."

THE STAT: There were 14 lead changes in the opening 15 minutes. But after DeJuan Blair (14 points and 12 rebounds) had three slam dunks against Houston over a span of 3 1/2 minutes in the second quarter, there were no more lead changes.

TURNING POINT: The Rockets trailed only by five points to start the fourth quarter, but Ginobili hit a pair of 3-pointers less than 1 1/2 minutes apart from each other. And when he stole a Courtney Lee pass and was fouled before hitting both free throws a minute later, San Antonio went up by 11 with eight minutes to go and Houston never got closer.

QUOTABLE II: "They have the best record in the league. What do you want me to say? They beat us. They have all the ingredients of a team that's going to be very difficult to beat."

HOT: Richard Jefferson was 7-for-8 (2-for-3 on 3-pointers) for 18 points, his best shooting performance of the season and his best scoring output since Dec. 10 against Atlanta. A lot of his work against Houston was done while Shane Battier had the defensive assignment on him.

NOT: Aaron Brooks is in a wicked slump. He was 3-for-12 against the Spurs and now has gone 19-for-71 his past six games, 26.8 percent.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Luis Scola scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and remains one of the few Rockets bright spots. Scola, who was drafted by the Spurs in the second round of the 2002 draft, had 30 points (14-of-21) and eight rebounds Thursday at Dallas.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Fabricio Oberto, the starting center when the Spurs won their most recent title in 2007, showed up to see his Argentine teammates Ginobili and Scola. Oberto, who retired this season, has made both Spurs-Rockets games this season.

GOOD MOVE: With Matt Bonner still out with his sore right knee, Popovich has counted on Antonio McDyess to bring the energy to the court that Bonner had supplied. But Popovich has wanted to still manage the minutes of the 36-year-old McDyess. After a helpful 21 minutes (four points and four rebounds) against the Rockets, McDyess stayed on the bench the final five minutes.

BAD MOVE: Kevin Martin hit both of his 3-point shots while scoring 10 first-quarter points. But he played only 1 1/2 minutes in the second quarter and failed to get off a shot. Maybe he lost his rhythm, because he missed his final seven shots, including five 3-pointers and did not get to the foul line the entire night.

ROOKIE WATCH: Patrick Patterson (Kentucky, 14th overall pick) played 20 minutes and was 4-for-8 for eight points and had five rebounds. Tiago Splitter played 14 minutes for San Antonio but was 1-for-4 for three points and had three rebounds with two steals. Gary Neal scored 14 points (he was 7-for-8 on foul shots) and had five assists.

NOTABLE: Now that the Spurs hit the road for nine straight games, they are 15-5 away from home compared to 24-2 at home. The last five times the Spurs have lost, it has been on the road. ... Ginobili was whistled for a rare goaltending call in the third quarter.
