The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the brink of matching a 29-year team record for futility, and there doesn't appear to be much relief in sight.

The Denver Nuggets would like to capitalize on another meeting with the league's worst team.

The lowly Cavaliers attempt to avoid equaling their single-season record 19-game losing streak when they host the Nuggets on Friday night.

Cleveland (8-37) set a team record by losing its final 19 games of 1981-82, and dropped the first five the following season for an NBA-record 24-game skid.

That record appears well within the Cavaliers' grasp with visits to Orlando on Sunday and Miami the following night after facing Denver (27-18).

They pulled to within one of their team mark Tuesday, falling 112-95 at Boston to begin this four-game stretch against opponents that have reached the playoffs each of the last two seasons.

"It's human nature to think about how many we've lost in a row, and whatever record we've set. Losing is tough, in general," said forward Antawn Jamison. "To be where we're at - one of the worst records in the league right now - that's tough. We've just got to worry about trying to find a way to fix it. That's about the only thing you can do."

Cleveland is being outscored by 14.9 points during its 18-game slide and has dropped 27 of 29, including a 127-99 loss at Denver on Jan. 15.

"I don't care about all that," coach Byron Scott said. "We'll have a breakthrough. I'm not looking at the number of losses and things like that. I'm looking at it game-by-game and seeing if we're improving on both ends of the floor."

Scott may be finding some solace in the Cavaliers shooting 45.7 percent from the field the last two games after hitting 38.1 percent over the previous seven.

They may need to do even better against the Nuggets, the NBA's highest-scoring team at 107.7 points per game

Denver has won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Cavaliers, averaging 110.5 points in those victories, and is 3-1 its last four visits to Cleveland, winning the most recent 118-116 in overtime behind 40 points from Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony wasn't as effective on Jan. 15, making 5 of 17 shots for 12 points while adding nine rebounds. The star forward was slightly better Wednesday, scoring 18 points on 5 of 16 from the field in a 109-100 win at Detroit as the Nuggets won their third straight, the last two on the road.

Anthony, named an All-Star starter for the Western Conference on Thursday, leads Denver with 23.6 points per game. He's spent most of the season answering questions about reports claiming he'll eventually be traded before his contract expires after the season.

"My options are open right now," Anthony said. "I really don't know what's going on right now and it's four, three weeks away from the (trading) deadline."

Chauncey Billups, who has also been mentioned in trade speculation, picked up the scoring slack for Anthony on Wednesday with 26 points, making 6 of 9 3-pointers. He found himself in a similar role against the Cavaliers earlier this month, hitting all five from beyond the arc to total 21 points with eight assists.

Melo, Nuggets pound Cavs 117-103

CLEVELAND (AP) Every word Byron Scott uttered was soaked with dejection.

As Cleveland's first-year coach analyzed yet another loss by the lowly Cavaliers, Scott was asked if he could identify one positive on another dreary night.

"Yeah," he said. "It's over."

Sadly for the Cavs, their losing streak isn't done.

Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points, Arron Afflalo added 23 and the Denver Nuggets avoided any embarrassment by beating Cleveland 117-103 on Friday night, handing the pathetic Cavaliers their team record-tying 19th straight loss.

Still winless in 2011, the Cavs have also dropped 29 of 30 and are now just five losses away from breaking the NBA record of 23 consecutive defeats in one season, an inglorious mark shared by the Vancouver (1995-96) and Denver (1997-98).

"Disappointing," said Scott, who played for the expansion Grizzlies when they lost 23 straight. "We continue to spot teams 20-point leads and then we're fighting up hill all game long. We were on our heels the whole night. But I'm not going to throw my hands up. That's not me."

Melo and the Nuggets showed little compassion for the Cavs, who cut a 23-point deficit down to six in the fourth but couldn't get any closer.

J.J. Hickson had 24 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland, which lost its final 19 games in 1981-82 and its next five the following season to set the mark for the longest losing streak spanning two seasons.

Cleveland's current losing streak is the league's longest since Orlando dropped 19 in a row in 2003.

The Cavs' slide has continued through the incessant Anthony trade rumors, which have quieted in recent weeks but are certain to pick up as the Feb. 24 deadline approaches. Who knows, maybe the Cavs (8-38) will have won their ninth game by then.

Although they've tasted victory just once since Nov. 27, the Cavs never stopped fighting. Down by 22 midway through the third quarter, they reeled off 10 straight points and closed the period with a 12-3 spurt to pull within 93-83.

The burst kept Cleveland's crowd from bolting early, and when Hickson scored with 6:13 left, the Cavs were within 101-95 and Quicken Loans Arena sounded like it did when LeBron James was still around.

But Anthony restored order. After resting to start the quarter, he returned and hit a quick jumper before Ty Lawson blazed down the lane for an easy layup to put the Nuggets ahead 108-99 with 4:22 to go.

The Cavs missed at the other end and Chauncey Billups drained a long 3-pointer to make it 111-99 and kill Cleveland's comeback.

Anthony made 15 free throws - equaling the Cavs' total - and Lawson added 15 points as the Nuggets won their fourth in a row.

Denver has played well amid the swirling rumors about Anthony's future. But what once seemed a distraction is bonding the Nuggets.

"We get tired of being asked that question," coach George Karl said of the Melo-drama. "We have kept it away from the basketball court. There is an energy that is drained from press conferences, going to different cities and being asked the same questions and reading the same stories.

"We had a bad stretch in early January, but we have bounced back. We're starting to play as good as we've played all year."

Anthony said it was strange coming to Cleveland and not facing James, a close friend and Olympic teammate.

"It felt weird coming here and not playing against him," he said. "We had some great matchups here. We always talk about that."

Antawn Jamison had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, which will likely go 0-for-January with upcoming games at Orlando on Sunday and in Miami on Monday to close the month. The Cavs' next best chance to end their losing streak will be next Wednesday at home against Indiana.

Denver center Nene returned after missing Wednesday's game with a strained right calf, but played only nine minutes. He sat out the second half as a precautionary measure, the team said.

Ramon Sessions had a season-high 13 assists for the Cavs.

As a former Cleveland coach, Karl has sympathy for the Cavs, who haven't won since Dec. 18. He's sure they'll snap out of their funk at some point.

"I feel sorry for them," he said. "But they're going to win again. They're going to have a stretch where they will get their confidence going in a good direction and they'll win some games. It will probably happen on their home court before it happens on the road court."

Notes: Nuggets F Al Harrington left the arena on crutches and in a walking boot after aggravating a foot injury in the fourth quarter. Karl said he's day to day. ... Karl's high school coach, Dick Misenhelter, addressed the Nuggets following their morning shootaround. Misenhelter, 80, shared a story about a young Karl being held to a season-low nine points in a loss during the Pennsylvania state playoffs. "He brings up the one bad game I had that year," Karl said, laughing. "I was a cocky dude." Misenhelter knew way back then that Karl would one day become a coach. "George would always come up with ideas in the huddle," he said. "He was always on top of his game." ... Scott reiterated he doesn't believe it will take long for the Cavs to return to winning. "It's not going to take a decade," he said.

Cavaliers-Nuggets notebook

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony isn't playing like a man who wants to get out of Denver. Anthony scored 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds, leading the Nuggets to their fourth straight win, 117-103 over host Cleveland on Friday. More than that, Anthony seemed to hit every meaningful shot to help the Nuggets thwart the Cavaliers' many comeback attempts. Aaron Afflalo added 23 points for the Nuggets (28-18). Meanwhile, the Cavs (8-38) tied a franchise record with their 19th straight loss, set during the 1981-82 season.

QUOTABLE: "I don't know many NBA games where you keep a 20-point lead the whole game, especially on the road. The Cavs played hard and took advantage of it in the third quarter. Fortunately, we made enough plays in the fourth quarter to win it."

THE STAT: 43 percent. That's what the Nuggets shot on 3-pointers, knocking down 10 of 23. Afflalo and Chauncey Billups were particularly impressive, combining to go 7-for-13 on threes. Billups also hit a biggie midway through the fourth quarter, not long after the Cavs cut the margin to six.

TURNING POINT: It's hard to find a specific moment when the Nuggets really turned it on, as they never trailed and held a 31-24 lead at the end of the first quarter (and 70-50 at halftime). But that's really is what made this victory so impressive -- as they made every important basket, and even their few letdowns weren't that bad.

QUOTABLE II: "We are not forgetting what it takes [to win], we know what it takes. I think at some point, everyone in this locker room has been a winner in their career. Myself personally, I came to two 60-plus win seasons. So I just hate losing."

HOT: Nuggets second-year point guard Ty Lawson continues to show he is learning to run an NBA team and may be worthy of being a starter in this league. He finished with an underrated 15 points, five assists and four boards. ... For the Cavs, Hickson was 10-for-12 shooting for 24 points. He also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

NOT: Though no fault of his own, Nuggets center Nene played just 8 minutes and 45 seconds and scored seven points. The reason? A strained calf that also forced him to miss the previous game in Detroit. His status is day-to-day.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Cavs point guard Ramon Sessions continues to put up strong numbers, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 13 assists. If he's still available in your fantasy league, pick him up now. After all, regular starter Mo Williams (hip) isn't due to return for at least another two weeks.

NOTABLE: The Cavs will have to try to avoid setting the franchise record for consecutive losses on the road, as they travel to Orlando on Sunday. After that, it's a game on Monday against LeBron James and the Heat. ... The NBA record for consecutive losses in a season is 23, set by the then-Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995-96. Cavs coach Byron Scott was a member of that team. ... To be fair, Scott also owns three championship rings from his days with the Lakers in the 1980s, and coached New Jersey to back-to-back Finals appearances earlier this decade.
