Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is trying to find his shooting touch after a knee injury sidelined him for nearly three weeks.

Los Angeles Clippers rookie Blake Griffin is playing like an All-Star after losing all of last season to an injured knee.

Nowitzki and the Mavericks go for their eighth straight victory over the Clippers on Tuesday night in the teams' first meeting at American Airlines Center this season.

In five games back since missing nine with a sprained right knee, Nowitzki is scoring 19.0 points per game - 4.4 fewer than his season average - on 38.0 percent shooting. The former MVP missed 17 of 23 shots before hitting the game-winner with six seconds left in Saturday's 87-86 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

"Oh man. I couldn't buy one," Nowitzki said after scoring a team-high 23 points. "I don't know what's going on. I'm running in quicksand. I can't make a move. I've got no legs. Even the last one really didn't want to go in. It kind of rolled out there."

Dallas (28-15) needs Nowitzki - 2 for 11 from 3-point range in the past three games - to get back on track after it lost 5 1/2 games to Southwest Division-leading San Antonio while dropping seven of nine during his absence.

After snapping a five-game road losing streak Saturday, the Mavericks open a four-game stretch at home against a Clippers team that's won 12 of 17.

Despite shooting 43.5 percent, including 7 of 33 from 3-point range, Los Angeles (17-26) posted its seventh straight victory at Staples Center on Saturday, 113-109 over Golden State.

Griffin hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 47 seconds left and finished with 30 points, a career high-tying 18 rebounds and a career-best eight assists.

After missing 2009-10 with a broken left kneecap suffered in the final game of the preseason, the 21-year-old forward leads all first-year players with 22.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game, and he is second in the NBA with 35 double-doubles.

The only Clipper to appear and start in all 43 games, Griffin has given hope to a franchise with one playoff series win since 1976.

"We've done a good job of turning things around as a team, and I'm really proud of my teammates and the way we've stuck together," said Griffin, averaging 31.5 points over the last four games. "We went through a real tough patch at the beginning of the season, and this says a lot about us because we kept on learning and we kept on fighting. Everybody knows their roles and what they're supposed to do. It's just a matter of following through."

Coach Vinny Del Negro's team could take another step in its maturation by improving on the road, where it has allowed 106.4 points per game while losing 13 of 16.

The Clippers have dropped seven in a row in Dallas, falling 106-96 in their last game there March 23 even with Nowitzki getting ejected in the third quarter for complaining about a foul. Jason Kidd had 12 assists and hit six 3-pointers while scoring 26 points - his most in any game from the past 2 1/2 seasons.

Clippers leading scorer Eric Gordon, averaging 20.3 points in three career games in Dallas, is questionable for this matchup after a bruised lower back kept him out for nearly 14 minutes Saturday.

Nowitzki and Griffin had 16 points apiece in Dallas' 99-83 victory at Los Angeles on Oct. 31 in the teams' only meeting this season.

The Clippers' last road win in this matchup was 85-71 on April 19, 2006.

The Mavericks signed sharpshooter

Peja Stojakovic off waivers Monday, though it appears unlikely he will make his debut in this game.

"We're taking it slow," team president Donnie Nelson said. "Depends on him getting into game shape."

Mavs pull away from Gordon-less Clippers, 112-105

DALLAS (AP) With leading scorer Eric Gordon back in Los Angeles and out for at least three weeks, Blake Griffin knew the Clippers needed him more than ever. And when their 15-point lead over the Dallas Mavericks turned into a deficit late in the third quarter, Griffin took off in search of a highlight-reel basket to energize a rally.

He wound up hitting the floor - hard. Hard enough to draw a technical foul against Brendan Haywood, hard enough to leave Griffin needing a big ice pack on his left elbow after the game and hard enough to provide the energy boost Dallas needed to finish off a 112-105 victory Tuesday night.

Jason Terry scored a season-high 28 points and fellow reserve guard J.J. Barea added 25 as the Mavericks scored their most points of the season. Tyson Chandler added a season-high 21 and Dirk Nowitzki had 20, marking the first time in two years that Dallas had four players crack 20 points.

Yet the offensive exploits were overshadowed by the way the defense dominated the second half, epitomized by Haywood's violent takedown of Griffin.

The Mavericks had just gone on a 23-6 spurt to go ahead for the first time. They were up by four when Griffin blew past Haywood on his way to the rim for a spectacular finish. He didn't make it because Haywood reached out with both hands, got hold of his dangling left arm and jerked him down before he got too far off the ground.

"Every play can't be a dunk-contest dunk," Haywood said.

Griffin played the remaining 42.5 seconds of the third quarter, even making a 21-foot jumper. Then he missed the start of the fourth quarter while getting a protective sleeve on his arm. He returned with the Mavericks in the midst of a 14-0 run that sealed their third win in four games since stopping a six-game losing streak.

Griffin finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. However, he had 12 of those points in the first quarter.

"Obviously I could have done better," Griffin said. "I'll watch the film and get better from it."

As for the damage to his elbow, he said, "After that flagrant foul it started hurting. We'll see how it is tomorrow."

Gordon is expected to miss 3-4 weeks because of a sprained right wrist, which also has a chipped bone. He's averaging 24.1 points, eighth-best in the NBA.

The Clippers started the game looking like they wouldn't even miss him.

They scored 62 points by halftime, making 68 percent of their shots. But then the Mavs changed everything and Los Angeles couldn't recover. The Clippers scored 43 points and made 44 percent of their shots in the second half, padding by some baskets after the outcome was pretty much determined.

"They were all over us and got into us in the first half, pushed us around a little bit," Nowitzki said. "In the second half ,we were the more aggressive team. That's how it is in this league, usually. The team that's more aggressive gets more calls, gets the benefit of the doubt. They were the team that got the benefit of the doubt in the first half, then we turned it around in the second."

The fourth quarter also was spiced up by an exchange of words between Clippers guard Baron Davis and Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

Davis knocked over Barea with a pair of forearm shoves on his way up the court. Davis didn't like Barea going down on the second one, and Carlisle didn't like everything about what Davis did and said. Offsetting technical fouls were issued.

Davis scored 21. Randy Foye, who started in Gordon's place, scored 15 and Ryan Gomes added 14.

Nowitzki, who is still getting over a knee injury, was cut on his face in the first quarter and didn't have a basket until the final 2 minutes of the first half. He got rolling after that, though, finishing with some long jumpers during the final breakaway rally.

Terry scored 22 of his points in the second half. He finished 11 of 22, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers.

Barea scored 14 of his points in the second quarter. He finished 9 of 12, and 3 of 4 on 3-pointers.

For the Mavericks, this was a great way to start a four-game homestand. It also was a nice welcome for their newest player, Peja Stojakovic. He watched from the bench in jeans and had to go from wondering what was wrong with the club to wondering why they need him.

NOTES: Chandler hadn't cracked 20 points in three years. ... Dallas made eight baskets in the second quarter. Barea hit the first five, then Nowitzki hit the last three. Dallas' only other scorer in the period was Chandler, with four free throws. ... Los Angeles' 62 points at halftime was the most by a Mavs foe this season. ... Dallas' 63 bench points are fifth-most in the NBA this season.

Clippers-Mavericks notebook

THE FACTS: Four Dallas players scored at least 20 points, led by backup point guard J.J. Barea's 25 and reserve shooting guard Jason Terry's 28, as the Mavericks cooled off the Los Angeles Clippers 112-105 at the American Airlines Center. Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Baron Davis hit four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for Los Angeles, which was playing without injured guard Eric Gordon.

QUOTABLE: "I thought we got very stagnant offensively, which affected our defense, and then it kind of had a snowball effect from there. I didn't like our defense overall."

THE STAT: Los Angeles finished the game shooting 55.7 percent, but two dismal stretches in the third let the game get away. At the 9:49 point, Los Angeles led 69-58. Dallas held the Clippers without a field goal for more than three minutes to crawl within five. The Mavericks turned the defense up another notch to close the quarter. Clippers point guard Baron Davis hit a 3-pointer at the 5:05 mark. Los Angeles didn't make another field goal until nine seconds remained, and Dallas had closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to take an 81-78 lead.

TURNING POINT: Any chance the Clippers had to regain their lead was swept away by Dallas shooting early in the fourth. Barea's 3-pointer with 10:10 left made it 89-81. The teams traded baskets until Dirk Nowitzki's shot behind the arc gave Dallas its first double-digit advantage, 98-86. Two possessions later, Nowitzki nailed another 3-pointer to make it 103-86 with 6:33 left.

HOT: Los Angeles was hot early, but Dallas reserves Terry and Barea were hotter late. The Clippers shot 67.6 percent in the first half, and their 62 points were the most given up by Dallas in a first half this season. It wasn't enough to hold off Terry and Barea, who combined to score 53 points and had 14 points in a 19-8 fourth-quarter Mavericks run.

NOT: Los Angeles was 17-for-18 from the free-throw line. Griffin was 8-for-14.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dallas center Tyson Chandler had a perfect shooting night with five field goals and 11 free throws without a miss. Chandler had two rebounds to go with a season-high 21 points. It was Chandler's first 20-plus scoring night since April 2, 2008.

GOOD MOVE: The most impressive play by Griffin might have been one that didn't result in points. Griffin shot the second of two free throws with three seconds left before halftime. The ball hit high off the iron and to the right of the basket. Griffin ran to the spot, jumped high above two Mavericks defenders, grabbed the ball and got off a 19-footer that clipped the rim at the buzzer.

ROOKIE WATCH: Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe and forward Al-Faroug Aminu combined to score nine points. Aminu played 21 minutes and finished with six points and three rebounds.

NOTABLE: Dallas outscored the Clippers 18-2 in transition. ... Terry scored at least 20 points for the second time in four games. ... The Mavericks have defeated the Clippers eight consecutive times.
