The last time the Boston Celtics met the Detroit Pistons, Kevin Garnett was lost for nearly three weeks.

He's back now.

Garnett looks to build on his impressive return and help the Celtics to a fourth straight win Wednesday night against the Pistons.

Boston (31-9) is entering the midway point of its schedule atop the Eastern Conference, a status that should be easier to continue with Garnett back on the court.

The 13-time All-Star suffered an injury to his right leg on a dunk in the first quarter of a 104-92 loss at Detroit (15-26) on Dec. 29. The Celtics won six of nine without him, but his teammates still missed his physical presence and leadership.

"We look like a totally different team out there," forward Paul Pierce said. "You can't replace what Kevin gives to a ballclub. ... He raises everyone's play when he's on the court."

Garnett made a big difference in his return to the court Monday, scoring 19 points while pulling down eight rebounds and making a key steal in the final seconds to secure a 109-106 win over Orlando.

"These last two weeks have been dark days for me. Being hurt is not one of my favorite things," said Garnett, scoring 15.1 points per game with a team-leading 9.5 rebounds.

He's averaging 21.5 points on 60.7 percent shooting and 7.5 boards in his last four home games against the Pistons.

With Garnett healthy, Boston looks to continue its dominance at TD Garden. The team is among the league's best at home this season, going 19-3 and has won three in a row there since opening this six-game homestand with a 108-102 loss to Houston on Jan. 10.

The Celtics should benefit from having Rajon Rondo on the court for this meeting with the Pistons after he sat out the most recent one with an ankle injury.

Rondo leads the league with 13.4 assists per game, and dished out 17 in a 109-86 win at Detroit on Nov. 2. He's averaging 12.7 points and 13.0 assists in his last three games.

The Pistons are looking for their first four-game winning streak since a five-game run Dec. 4-12, 2009.

Lineup changes appear to be sparking the current run, which continued with Monday's 103-89 victory over Dallas.

"I think that foundation has finally been set - guys knowing their role in the starting group, guys know their role coming off the bench and as you see, it's just clicking right now," swingman Tracy McGrady said. "That's something we've been searching for, for quite some time and I think we finally found it."

McGrady and rookie Greg Monroe have started the last four games after being used mostly off the bench. McGrady is scoring 11.5 points per contest while playing the point over the last four games, and Monroe has been used at center and is averaging 13.3 points and 8.5 rebounds.

McGrady had 21 points against the Celtics last month.

It's unclear if Richard Hamilton will play after going unused on the bench for four games, while reports of a potential trade circulate. The swingman is averaging 21.0 points over the last nine visits to Boston.

The Celtics have won eight of 11 against the Pistons.

Celtics beat Pistons 86-82 for 4th straight win

BOSTON (AP) For Kevin Garnett, returning from an injury is all about getting back the rhythm he has developed with his Boston teammates.

"It's like being at a party, and the record skips, and you've got to get back on beat," he said after helping the Celtics erase an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit and beat the Detroit Pistons 86-82 on Wednesday night. "So, you know, the record skipped a bit. But I'm at the party; I've just got to find that groove again.

"For y'all who can't dance, don't take it personally."

Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Ray Allen hit a jumper with 25 seconds left to give the Celtics their first lead of the second half. Shaquille O'Neal had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Garnett added 11 points and six boards in his second game back after missing nine with a leg injury.

Allen finished with a season-low seven points on 2-for-8 shooting, missing all four of his 3-point attempts. But the Celtics called a play for him out of a timeout and he caught the pass off a screen, turned and (with his foot on the 3-point line) hit the open jumper.

"I wasn't shooting the ball particularly well," said Allen, who needs 28 more 3-pointers to tie Reggie Miller atop the NBA's career list. "I didn't really think I had a great rhythm. But I always feel like the next shot is going to go in, so I was never worried about it."

It was the fourth straight victory for the Celtics.

Rodney Stuckey scored 15 points and Greg Monroe had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Pistons, who led by eight with 8 minutes left but did not score over the game's last 2:43.

"We competed with the best team in the East, and one of the better teams in this league, on their home court," Pistons guard Tracy McGrady said. "If we can give this type of effort night-in and night-out, we're going to give ourselves a chance. We just have to learn how to close out games and to execute down the stretch."

The Pistons had won three in a row after coach John Kuester shook up his lineup, benching Richard Hamilton and inserting Monroe at center and McGrady at point guard. It was the longest winning streak of the season for Detroit, which opened with an 11-26 record.

The Pistons led by eight on Ben Gordon's 3-pointer, but the Celtics made three straight baskets before Chris Wilcox hit one free throw to make it 76-73 with 5:23 left. Rajon Rondo took a jumper near the top of the key, and O'Neal tipped the rebound off the backboard before grabbing it and laying it in; McGrady swiped at him, and the free throw made it 76-all.

It was a two-point game with 3:02 left when O'Neal missed two free throws, and Detroit made it 82-78 on Monroe's reverse layup. But Garnett scored inside, and then Pierce made a jumper in the lane.

After McGrady missed, Garnett missed a long jumper but Rondo got the rebound and called timeout. The Celtics ran Allen off a screen to get him open near the 3-point line on the right side and he sank the basket; it was initially ruled a 3-pointer, but replays showed his right foot was on the line, making the score 84-82.

Stuckey missed a leaner in the lane, and Garnett grabbed the rebound, then hit one of two foul shots. Gordon drove and missed a layup over Glen "Big Baby" Davis' outstretched arms.

NOTES: Celtics G Marquis Daniels rolled his ankle early in the second quarter and did not return. ... Charlie Villanueva came off the bench and played the entire second quarter, scoring seven points. ... The Pistons shot 58 percent (11 for 19) in the second and led 45-42 at halftime. The Celtics committed nine turnovers in the third quarter, and shot 29 percent from the field. But the Pistons shot just 26 percent. ... Allen missed both free throw attempts after being fouled early in the fourth quarter. It's the second time this year he has missed two foul shots in one trip to the line, and just the second time since 2007.

Celtics-Pistons notebook

THE FACTS: Shaquille O'Neal sparked a fourth quarter comeback as the Boston Celtics rallied for 86-82 win over the Detroit Pistons. Shaq scored seven points in the fourth quarter to help Boston close a eight-point deficit, and Ray Allen hit a go-ahead jumper with under a minute remaining to give Boston the lead for good. The 38-year-old O'Neal finished overall with 12 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Paul Pierce also had a game-high 23 points during the victory. Rodney Stuckey led five Pistons players in double figures with 15 points as Detroit had their three-game winning streak snapped.

QUOTABLE: "I thought Shaq won the game for us tonight. He did all the little things: crashed the glass, was physical, blocked shots. He was absolutely wonderful."

THE STAT: The game was a defensive struggle for the first 36 minutes, highlighted by an atrocious offensive showing by both squads in the third quarter. Together, both teams scored just 16 points each, while sinking just 27.8 percent of their shots combined in the frame.

TURNING POINT: Detroit appeared to establish control of the game with an 8-0 run during the opening moments of the fourth quarter. O'Neal had other ideas however, as he utilized his size advantage over the Pistons front line to jumpstart a 9-1 run for the C's during the next two minutes to tie up the game at 76. Boston carried that momentum through the final five minutes of action as they pulled out the win.

HOT: Greg Monroe continues to make a strong case to John Kuester to take over the starting center job in the Pistons starting lineup permanently. With a boost to his playing time, due to Ben Wallace's ankle injury, Monroe hit all five of his shots tonight, giving him 13 points along with nine rebounds in the loss. Overall, Monroe has scored in double figures for eight straight games and is averaging 12 points and nine rebounds per game for the month of January.

NOT: Ray Allen struggled to find a rhythm for the first 47 minutes Wednesday night, missing six of his first seven field goal attempts. He also had two uncharacteristic misses from the free throw line in the fourth. Allen's woes did not keep the Celtics from turning to him for what would be the game-winning jumper with 24 seconds remaining in the contest.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Patriots safety Patrick Chung watched the game courtside at TD Garden. Chung had a costly fumble during the Patriots playoff loss to the Jets Sunday.

GOOD MOVE: Glen Davis used his wide frame to wisely spend the majority of his time on the block, which is a change of pace for the power forward this season. The move paid off, as Davis had an efficient 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

ROOKIE WATCH: Semih Erden returned to game action replacing fellow rookie Luke Harangody in the rotation due to his height edge over the Pistons undersized frontcourt. The Turkish rookie made Rivers look smart for the shift, by scoring six points and grabbing four boards in 17 minutes of action.

NOTABLE: Richard Hamilton did not appear in his fifth straight game for Detroit ... Marquis Daniels rolled his left ankle on a drive to the hoop in the second quarter. He did not return to the game, but expects to play Friday vs. Utah. ... The Celtics improved to 9-0 during Wednesday night home games. ... Danny Ainge announced after the game that injured center Jermaine O'Neal would avoid surgery and instead rest his ailing left knee for the next four weeks. O'Neal would then try to rebuild the strength in the leg and attempt to return for the final two months of the season. ... Stuckey scored just three of his 15 points in the second half. ... Boston outrebounded Detroit 47-34, including 14 to five on the offensive glass. ... Garnett had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in his second game back from a right calf injury. ... Wallace missed his fifth consecutive game with a sprained left ankle. ... Boston has won four straight games, all coming at home.
