Bulls-Pacers Preview

The Chicago Bulls might be running away with the Central Division thanks to a nearly spotless home record, but their recent play on the road has left plenty of room for improvement.

A night before one of the league's top teams visits the United Center, the Bulls try to avoid a fourth straight road loss to a sub-.500 opponent Friday night against an Indiana Pacers team looking for a season-high third consecutive win.

Chicago (25-13) owns an eight-game lead over second-place Indiana (16-20) in the Central largely thanks to a 17-3 home record, which includes a 92-73 rout of the Danny Granger-less Pacers on Dec. 13.

The Bulls open a stretch of seven of eight at the United Center against Southeast-leading Miami on Saturday, but first they'll get a chance to solve their road issues. Chicago's 96-91 loss at Charlotte on Wednesday was its third straight away from home to opponents that are a combined 32 games below .500.

The Bulls have allowed an average of 82.4 points during a seven-game home winning streak but have surrendered at least 96 in each of their last three road games. They forced a season-low seven turnovers against the Bobcats.

Another problem Wednesday was their slow start, getting outscored 36-22 in the opening 12 minutes. Chicago has allowed an average of 27.1 first-quarter points in January - 3.9 more than the season's first two months.

"We can't continue that pattern. We have to play better from the start," Carlos Boozer said. "We can't be one of those teams that has slow starts and rely on ourselves to come back. It's something we have to clean up, and clean up fast before we get to Indiana."

The Bulls didn't have trouble getting started last month against the Pacers. Boozer had eight points and Luol Deng seven in the first seven minutes as Chicago started the game on a 25-8 run.

Having a healthy Granger - who missed that game with a sprained ankle - should help Indiana make sure Chicago doesn't run away Friday. Granger has averaged 28.0 points in his last five games against the Bulls.

Three Pacers scored at least 20 points in a 111-103 win at Philadelphia on Tuesday - Granger led the way with 27 - and Indiana got another balanced effort Wednesday against Dallas. Brandon Rush had a game-high 20 while Granger and Darren Collison each scored 17, but it was rookie Paul George's 16-point effort that was the talk of a 102-89 win.

George, who hit 4 of 6 from 3-point range, has reached double figures in three of six games since coach Jim O'Brien stuck him back in the rotation. He'd played in only three of the Pacers' previous 24 contests.

"He can shoot it," O'Brien said. "He is going to be a terrific basketball player."

Indiana has won consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 28-30. It hasn't won three straight since a four-game run April 4-10.

"They're two quality back-to-back wins for our team," O'Brien said. "I'm very proud of the intensity and the focus our guys put forth the past two games."

The Pacers should feel good about their chances Friday if Collison can continue his hot streak. He's averaged 17.2 points in his last six games, and Indiana is 10-7 when he scores 14 or more. Collison, however, has averaged just 6.0 in three games versus Chicago.

Derrick Rose, meanwhile, has been struggling in road games, shooting 40.2 percent - 3 for 25 from 3-point range - and averaging 5.0 turnovers over the last seven.

Rose leads Bulls past Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Derrick Rose figured the only way to get over the Charlotte loss was to take care of Indiana.

The Chicago point guard needed to shake off his poor shooting and his team's poor defensive effort against the Bobcats, and he responded with 29 points and 10 rebounds in a 99-86 win over the Pacers on Friday night.

Chicago led Charlotte 80-75 with eight minutes to go on Wednesday night before falling apart defensively in the closing minutes. Rose was focused on creating a different outcome against Indiana.

"I couldn't wait to play," Rose said. "We let that one slip because of our defense. Tonight, we made sure that we played with a lot of intensity at the beginning of the game and made sure that we played defense."

The Bulls held the Pacers to 33 percent shooting.

"We were just ready tonight," Bulls forward Carlos Boozer said. "We did a good job of focusing on what they do offensively. I thought we did a good job defensively and made them take tough shots, contested shots."

Rose shot 5 for 17 from the field against the Bobcats, but 11-for-21 against the Pacers. He scored 20 points in the second half against Indiana.

"In the second half, when he's going like he's going, it doesn't matter what you do on a pick-and-roll," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "That's why people think that he's an MVP candidate."

Luol Deng had 17 points and five assists, Boozer scored 14 points and Kurt Thomas had a season-high 18 rebounds for the Bulls.

Danny Granger scored 22 points for the Pacers, but he shot 4 for 17 in the first three quarters when the game was in doubt while being guarded primarily by Deng.

"He's such a great shooter," Deng said. "My mindset tonight was, I just didn't want to lose him. Every time he took a shot, I was doing the best I could to challenge. I didn't want to let him get any space."

Mike Dunleavy scored 13 points and Jeff Foster had a season-high 15 rebounds for Indiana, which failed to notch its first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Bulls led 53-41 at halftime.

"We came out there and had some needless turnovers, some silly turnovers that we shouldn't have had, and we didn't play our defense," Indiana forward Tyler Hansbrough said. "Our defense is something we've been relying on the whole year, and we just didn't show up tonight."

The Bulls extended their lead to 60-46 on a 3-pointer by Rose. Indiana trimmed its deficit to nine points and had a fast break going, but Brandon Rush missed everything on a hurried 3-pointer, and Taj Gibson converted a 3-point play on the other end to make it 66-54. On Chicago's next possession, Rose made a 3-pointer and was fouled, prompting MVP chants from the thousands of Bulls fans who made the short drive. He completed the four-point play to push Chicago's lead to 70-54.

"You've got to be able to stop him," Hansbrough said. "You're not going to be able to totally contain him, but you can't let him get hot and keep going."

Indiana surged again, and a jumper by Granger made it 70-61. But Chicago responded with a 7-0 run to re-establish control for good. Rose scored 12 points in the third quarter to help the Bulls lead 79-63 at the end of the period.

The Bulls led by 14 in the final minute when the half-filled arena, with mostly Chicago fans remaining, gave the Bulls a standing ovation.

Chicago shot 46 percent and committed just seven turnovers.

"We had a good balance to our offense," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I thought we had a good mix of post-ups, pick-and-rolls, catch-and-shoot, and transition. When we do that, we're going to be successful."

Indiana heads into a four-game road trip on a negative note.

"We dug a hole the first half," O'Brien said. "We weren't sharp at all. Our defense wasn't sharp, we missed too many layups and point blank shots, and when we tried to mount a comeback, Derrick Rose took over and made sure there was not going to be a comeback tonight."

NOTES: Chicago G Keith Bogans committed two fouls in the first 1:44 of the game. ... Indiana F Josh McRoberts played four minutes after O'Brien sat him for four games while using other players. McRoberts began the season as the starter, but Hansbrough started his fifth straight game at power forward ... Deng was issued a technical foul with 8:08 left in the second quarter.

Bulls-Pacers notebook

THE FACTS: Derrick Rose scored 29 points with 10 rebounds and Luol Deng added 17 points as the Chicago Bulls pulled away for a comfortable 99-86 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis Friday.

Rose shot 11-for-21 for Chicago, which led by as many as 18 points and never trailed after taking a four-point lead after the first quarter. The Bulls shot 45.5 percent as a team.

Danny Granger scored 22 points for Indiana, which struggled from the field throughout the game, finishing with 32.6 percent shooting (30 of 92) from the field. Granger shot 8 of 23.

Bulls center Kurt Thomas scored just four points, but had a season-high 18 rebounds.

The Bulls, who have not lost in the Central division this season, led by 12 at halftime and Indiana never cut the lead below nine points after that.

THE STAT: Pacers center Roy Hibbert started the season strong, but has struggled in recent weeks as Indiana has shifted to a smaller lineup. On Friday, he struggled throughout, and while he had seven rebounds, he also committed three turnovers and shot 1-for-8. Thomas and Boozer, meanwhile, played solidly inside throughout to help Chicago establish control, with Boozer finishing with 14 points.

TURNING POINT: The Bulls never seemed out of control of the game -- even early, when the Pacers inched their way to a five-point first-quarter lead. The Pacers led 17-12 with 5:10 remaining, but Chicago went on a 16-5 run over the next four and a half minutes, taking a 28-22 lead. The Pacers never led again, and the Bulls firmly established control with a 10-0 run late in the second quarter. Chicago led by 12 at halftime. Boozer helped controlled the interior in the first half for Chicago, and finished the half with 10 points and four rebounds. Chicago shot 45.1 percent in the first half.

HOT: The Bulls' bench didn't have a player in double figures, but they got solid contributions from five reserves -- Ronnie Brewer (seven points), Taj Gibson (nine), Omer Asik (five), C.J. Watson (eight) and Kyle Korver (five). The group combined for 34 points and 16 rebounds.

NOT: The Pacers played the Bulls evenly at times, but the most costly exception was the second quarter. With Granger shooting 1 of 7 from the field in the quarter, Indiana shot 5-for-24 (20.8 percent) as a team. The Bulls during the period outscored the Pacers by eight points to turn a four-point lead into a 53-41 advantage at halftime. Indiana point guard Darren Collison missed all four of his second-quarter shots and finished 4-for-16 from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: It was hardly Rose's best game of the season, but it was yet another solid, winning effort from a player many believe to be a Most Valuable Player candidate. Not only did Rose shoot 11-for-21 from the field, he shot 3-for-6 from 3-point range and also had five assists and two blocked shots.

BAD MOVE: It's hard to call it a terrible move, because a lot of players have trouble with Boozer. But the Pacers put Hansbrough on Boozer to start the game and also used Jeff Foster on the Bulls' forward. He still had a solid game, finishing with 14 points and six rebounds.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Pacers' season has been largely up and down, but they're starting to find a contributor in George. He had a career-high 16 points against Dallas Wednesday, and on Friday, he had eight points on 3-for-7 shooting.

NOTABLE: Hansbrough, making his fifth consecutive start, continued to progress for Indiana, scoring 12 points and two blocked shots. . . . The 32.6 shooting performance from the field was Indiana's worst shooting game since Nov. 3, 33 games ago. . . . Indiana lost despite outrebounding Chicago 53-52. . . . Foster had a season-high 15 rebounds for Indiana.
