76ers-Pistons Preview

After a rough start, the Philadelphia 76ers have played well for more than a month.

The Detroit Pistons are hoping a significant winning stretch of their own is still to come.

Looking to avoid a fourth consecutive loss, the Pistons try to continue their recent success against the visiting 76ers on Saturday night.

After a 3-13 start, Philadelphia (15-21) improved to 12-8 after beating Central Division-leading Chicago 105-99 on Friday. The turnaround has helped the 76ers move into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

"We're definitely starting to feel each other right now," said second-year guard Jrue Holiday, who scored 19 points.

Detroit (11-24) is 3 1/2 games behind the 76ers, but already seems to feel a sense of urgency as it tries to avoid falling further down in the East standings. The Pistons, losers of five of six, haven't won more than two in a row since starting 0-5.

Detroit, however, went 3-1 against Philadelphia in 2009-10.

"This is an important game," coach John Kuester told the Pistons' official website. "But every game is important for us right now. We've got to play with the type of tenacity and concentration we did (in a 104-92 win over Boston on Dec. 29) and we'll give ourselves a chance."

Following that victory over the East-leading Celtics, the Pistons went 0-3 on the road against Phoenix, Utah and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Detroit, which fell 108-83 to the Lakers on Tuesday, averaged 85.0 points on the swing.

"We were playing terrific basketball on both ends of the floor," forward Charlie Villanueva said. "On the West Coast trip, we got away from that a little bit. But the beauty of the NBA is you've got one (Saturday) and, hopefully, we can get back on track."

Villanueva averaged 17.8 points against the 76ers last season, but was held to four against the Lakers. Tracy McGrady and rookie Greg Monroe each scored 14 for the Pistons.

The 31-year-old McGrady is averaging only 6.1 points this season, but 13.3 on 20-of-40 shooting the last four games since becoming a starter while guard Rodney Stuckey dealt with the flu.

Stuckey (15.3 points per game) totaled three points in limited minutes over the last two games after missing two, but could be back in the starting lineup for this contest. He's averaged 17.9 points in his last seven games versus Philadelphia.

Jodie Meeks scored 24 points and Lou Williams added 20 as the 76ers' shot 56.3 percent on Friday to avenge a 45-point loss to the Bulls on Dec. 21.

"It's a hell of a win," 76ers coach Doug Collins said.

The starting backcourt of Meeks and Holiday has played a big part of Philadelphia's resurgence. Holiday has averaged 20.1 points on 55.1 percent shooting over the last eight games while the 76ers are 10-8 with Meeks averaging 11.1 per game as a starter.

The 76ers, who are 5-15 on the road this season, split two trips to Detroit last season.

Philadelphia will play a seventh straight game without star Andre Iguodala, who is expected to return from a bout with Achilles' tendinitis next week.

Daye, Pistons outlast 76ers 112-109 in overtime

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Austin Daye and the Detroit Pistons took advantage of an unexpected reprieve.

Daye made a tying 3-pointer from the corner with 3.5 seconds left in regulation - after Philadelphia's Lou Williams missed two free throws at the other end - and the Pistons went on to beat the 76ers 112-109 in overtime Saturday night.

"The play actually wasn't for me to start off and then (coach John Kuester) changed it around," Daye said. "I got a great screen and as soon as I let it go, I knew it was going in."

Daye's shot came moments after the Pistons wasted a chance to tie the game. Down by three, Charlie Villanueva rushed a 3-pointer that missed everything, but Williams missed a pair of free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining, giving the Pistons another chance. Daye caught Tracy McGrady's inbounds pass and made the tying shot.

Williams entered the game shooting 82 percent from the free throw line.

"I told him those free throws did not lose the game," 76ers coach Doug Collins said. "He's one of my best players. I want him to understand that as long as he plays for me, those plays did not lose the game for us. They still had to hit a 3 to get the game into overtime."

Even in regulation, Williams had a chance to redeem himself, but after Daye's 3-pointer, he missed a contested shot from the left wing that could have won it. Daye then started overtime with a 3-pointer and a dunk.

"I thought Austin played with a lot of poise," Kuester said. "A lot of it deals with the momentum of the game, and who has their legs in the flow of the game, and that's why we stayed with those guys down the stretch."

The 76ers nearly rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 20 seconds of overtime, pulling within one on 3-pointers by Evan Turner and Jodie Meeks. After Rodney Stuckey made two free throws for Detroit with 6.6 seconds left, Meeks tried a wild, off-balance shot that was well guarded. The shot bounced off the rim.

Tayshaun Prince scored 23 points for the Pistons, and rookie Greg Monroe added a career-high 16 points along with 13 rebounds.

Turner scored 19 points for Philadelphia, one of seven 76ers - including four reserves - in double figures. Elton Brand had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday contributed 15 points and 12 assists.

The 76ers are in playoff contention after bouncing back from a 3-13 start and were sharp early on against Detroit. Philadelphia led 34-30 after shooting 74 percent from the field in the first quarter.

The Pistons clamped down a little more after that, and the 76ers finished the game at 48 percent. Detroit also had 15 offensive rebounds, five by Monroe.

"It means a lot that the coach trusts me enough to have me on the floor in overtime," Monroe said. "I'm trying to learn from every game, every possession and every practice."

With the Pistons trailing 92-90 in the fourth quarter, Ben Wallace missed a wild shot inside and then was called for a technical foul for showing his frustration. Williams made the free throw with 2:05 remaining, but the 76ers couldn't extend the lead beyond three.

Brand made a big play with the shot clock running down, drifting to his right and making a shot from near the free throw line with 12.4 seconds remaining. After Villanueva's miss, the 76ers simply needed to make their free throws to put away the game, but Williams was unable.

"All for one and one for all," Turner said. "We're all one unit. No one's sitting in the corner saying, 'He blew the game."'

Notes: Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala (tendinitis) missed his seventh straight game. ... Philadelphia associate head coach Michael Curry was Detroit's coach two seasons ago. He also played for the Pistons for six seasons. ... Kuester said before the game he doesn't think the Pistons' sale has been too much of a distraction for his players. Reports on Friday said Platinum Equity chairman Tom Gores has a 30-day exclusive window to buy the team. "The checks come in, the plane shows up and we get per diem, so I think they're happy," Kuester said.

THE FACTS: Reserve forward Austin Daye made a game-tying 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left in regulation, then scored the first five points of overtime as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 on Saturday. Forward Tayshaun Prince led Detroit with 23 points while rookie guard Evan Turner had 19 for Philadelphia.

QUOTABLE: "It's about time we got a little luck. The basketball gods were with us."

THE STAT: 31. The Pistons' 2009 first-round draft choice, Daye, and their 2010 first-rounder, center Greg Monroe, combined for 31 points off the bench. Daye had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists while Monroe delivered his second straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds along with three steals.

TURNING POINT: Sixers guard Lou Williams needed to make just one free throw with 6.2 seconds left in regulation to give his club a two-possession lead. Williams, an 82.2 percent free throw shooter entering the game, missed both to give the Pistons some life. Daye then used a Rodney Stuckey screen to free himself up in the left corner for the tying 3-pointer.

QUOTABLE II: "I told him those free throws did not lose the game. I've got his back in everything he does. He's one of my best players."

HOT: Stuckey returned to the starting lineup and played a sharp all-around game. He racked up 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. He also made two clutch free throws with 6.6 seconds left in overtime and his club holding a one-point lead. Stuckey had missed two games with a stomach virus, then scored just three points off the bench in Detroit's past two games against Utah and Los Angeles Lakers while still recovering from the illness.

NOT: Sixers forward Andres Nocioni had just five points in 39 minutes and had even more trouble guarding Prince. In the closing minutes of regulation, Prince twice posted him up for short turnaround jumpers and then glided past him for a layup. Those baskets kept the Pistons within striking distance.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Sixers guard Jrue Holiday has become a reliable source for assists for his fantasy owners. He had 12 Saturday, one shy of his season high, and is averaging 8.8 over his last five game.

GOOD MOVE: Kuester's shooting guard duo of Ben Gordon and Richard Hamilton shot a combined 4-for-17 from the field, so he paired playmakers Stuckey and Tracy McGrady at his guard spots down the stretch. They combined for just one turnover in the fourth quarter and OT sessions, while Stuckey scored eight points and McGrady made three assists.

BAD MOVE: Sixers reserve center Marreese Speights gave the Pistons fits with his mid-range shooting, scoring 10 points in 14 minutes. But Collins took out Speights with 7:48 remaining in the fourth and Speights only played eight seconds from that point.

ROOKIE WATCH: Sixers lottery pick Evan Turner bounced back from some modest offensive performances by shooting 7-for-11 with five assists. His 19 points were eight more than he scored in the past three games combined.

NOTABLE: Sixers forward Andre Iguodala missed his seventh straight game with bilateral Achilles' tendinitis. ... The Pistons are 4-2 in OT this season. ... The Sixers are 12-9 after starting the season 3-13 but have lost all three of their OT games. ... Philadelphia forward Elton Brand recorded his 10th double-double in the last 19 games with 17 points and 14 rebounds. ... Stuckey made three 3-pointers after connecting on just 7 of 34 prior to the game.
