Magic-Mavericks Preview

When the Orlando Magic hosted the Dallas Mavericks last month, Dallas was in the midst of a 17-1 stretch while Orlando, days after overhauling its roster, was on its way to an eighth loss in nine games.

Nothing has gone wrong for the Magic since. Little has gone right for the Mavericks.

Orlando looks to match the longest winning streak in franchise history Saturday night when it opens a five-game road trip against struggling Dallas, which hopes to avoid a fifth loss in seven games since Dirk Nowitzki went down with a knee injury.

The Magic (24-12) had lost five of six when they got an extreme makeover Dec. 18, swapping four of the rotation's top eight players for Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu and Earl Clark.

After playing shorthanded in a loss the day of the overhaul, Orlando dropped the first two games with its reconstructed look - including a 105-99 defeat against Dallas (26-9) on Dec. 21.

"It can't get any worse," Magic center Dwight Howard said.

Sure enough, it didn't get worse in Orlando. These days it couldn't get much better. The Magic, who averaged 89.3 points during their 1-8 skid, have scored 106.5 per game since. They stretched their winning streak to eight Friday, using a 39-21 run in the third quarter to cruise past Houston, 110-95.

A victory in Dallas - where Orlando has won its last two - would tie the franchise-record winning streak of nine, first set in the 1994-95 season and matched in 2000-01.

"I think the trades have made us better, there's no doubt in my mind," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I thought that we've come together offensively quicker than I thought we would have, but we still need to work on our defense."

While Arenas is still struggling - he's shot 35.9 percent since the trade - Richardson and Turkoglu have thrived. Richardson has averaged 14.3 points and Turkoglu 13.5 during the streak, with both shooting above 50 percent from the floor overall and 40 percent from 3-point range.

"We still have some things to work on but for the most part, everybody is a lot more comfortable than they were weeks ago," guard Jameer Nelson said. "Guys are coming in from a different situation and a different system and stuff like that. We just try to make them as comfortable as possible."

As Orlando's offense has begun to click, Dallas' has sputtered. Not only has Nowitzki missed the past six games with a sprained right knee, but third-leading scorer Caron Butler was lost for the season last Saturday after tearing a tendon in his right knee.

The Mavericks are shooting 43.3 percent since Nowitzki went down and averaging 89.8 points - nearly 10 fewer than what they were scoring during a 24-5 start.

Thursday's 99-95 loss to Oklahoma City was Dallas' third in four games at home - its worst stretch at the American Airlines Center since opening 2008-09 with four consecutive defeats.

Saturday's game will mark the first time in Nowitzki's 13-year career he's missed seven games in a season. The earliest he'll return is Wednesday, when the Mavs open a four-game trip at Indiana.

"We definitely miss him," center Tyson Chandler said. "Not only down the stretch, but he changes the entire game. When he's in the game, he stretches the floor. Guys aren't as willing to help off of him, he's a big body. He plays great team defense."

Chandler's biggest problem Saturday will be containing Howard. Orlando's big man has averaged 26.8 points, 17.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in the teams' last four meetings.

Magic extend winning streak to 9, beat Mavs

DALLAS (AP) Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic woke up from a sluggish first half in time to stretch the NBA's longest current winning streak.

Howard had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and the Magic won their ninth straight with a 117-107 victory over the injury-depleted Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night.

Jason Richardson scored 20 points and Jameer Nelson had 16 for Orlando, which rallied from a 16-point, first-half deficit.

"We just started playing hard," Howard said of his team's 37-26 fourth-quarter surge. "We're trying to be consistent with the way we play. We've got to learn our lesson, that we can't expect to play only half the game."

Hedo Turkoglu contributed 13 points and a career-high 17 assists, and Gilbert Arenas had 14 points for the Magic.

DeShawn Stevenson scored a season-high 24 points for the Mavericks, who were without top scorer Dirk Nowitzki for his career-high seventh straight game with a sprained right knee.

Shawn Marion had 18 points and Jason Terry added 16 points and nine assists for Dallas, 2-5 during Nowitzki's absence.

Ryan Anderson's 3-pointer with 9:54 left gave Orlando the lead for good at 88-85, and the Magic used a 26-3 run capped by Turkoglu's 20-footer with 4:26 remaining for a 108-88 advantage.

Orlando was on the second leg of a back-to-back, having beaten the Houston Rockets 110-95 at home on Friday night. The Magic didn't get to their hotel until early Saturday morning, and were outscored 28-19 in the first quarter.

"We got some energy," Richardson said. "We woke up, got our defense going and that fed our offense."

Dallas center Tyson Chandler went to the bench after picking up his fourth foul with 6:06 left in the third quarter, but the Mavs still clung to an 81-80 lead heading into the final period. Chandler fouled out with 5:42 remaining.

Orlando has taken off since newcomers Turkoglu, Richardson and Arenas started getting into the flow with their new team. The Magic haven't lost since the last meeting with Dallas on Dec. 21, when the Mavericks won 105-99 in Orlando.

When Nowitzki was hurt on Dec. 27 in a game at Oklahoma City, he thought he'd be out for only a short time. But he hasn't recovered as quickly as he anticipated and remains day-to-day. He attempted to run at practice on Thursday but experienced knee pain and was told by team medical personnel to shut down the workout.

Earlier in the week, the Mavericks learned that No. 3 scorer Caron Butler was probably out for the season with a torn tendon in his right knee.

Minus Nowitzki and Butler, the Mavericks are searching for different ways to score. But to coach Rick Carlisle, everything depends on his team's defensive effort.

"It's going to start with defense and rebounding," Carlisle said. "It's going to get our offense going regardless of who's available. I don't believe in the excuse game. We've got to get it done with the people available."

Stevenson, who entered the night with a scoring average of 6.9 points, went 5 of 7 from 3-point range and had 17 at halftime to send the Mavericks to a 57-51 lead at the break.

At halftime, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy admonished his team for its lax defense that allowed the Mavericks to go up by 16 in the second quarter.

"Our coach was upset with our effort," Howard said. "We knew we had to pick it up."

NOTES: Richardson kept the Magic close with 14 first-half points, going 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. ... Nowitzki's previous career high for consecutive missed games was five in 2003-04. ... Dallas has still won 12 of the last 17 meetings with Orlando. ... Carlisle was ejected with 6:06 left after picking up his second technical for walking onto the floor to protest an officiating decision. "I didn't like the officiating, obviously, but that's as much as I'm going to say about it," Carlisle said. "I think calls you disagree with are one of the realities of this league, and when you really disagree a lot you get thrown out of the game."

THE FACTS: Orlando forward Hedo Tukoglu scored 13 points and dished out a career-high 17 assists, leading seven players in double-figures as the Orlando Magic beat the Dallas Mavericks 117-107 at the American Airlines Center. Orlando won for the ninth consecutive time to tie a franchise record. Dallas, playing without injured forward Dirk Nowitzki, lost for the fifth time in seven games. Forward DeShawn Stevenson led the Mavericks with 24 points.

QUOTABLE: "Hedo was great tonight passing the ball. Seventeen assists for anybody is incredible, but a 6-10 forward with 17 assists, that's a phenomenal, phenomenal game. He made a lot of plays for us."

THE STAT: Orlando, which entered the game shooting 43 percent from the 3-point line during its win streak, started 2-for-11 and trailed, 50-34, with 3:30 left in the first half. When the Magic heated up from long range, the game changed. Orlando closed the half by hitting their final four from beyond the arc, and Magic guard Jason Richardson was fouled in the act of shooting another one. He hit all three free throws, and Orlando had cut a 16-point deficit to six, 57-51, by halftime. That run came with Dwight Howard on the bench most of the second quarter because of foul trouble. A 3-pointer by Magic guard Gilbert Arenas with a minute left in the third completed the comeback and put Orlando up, 80-79. The Magic was 12-for-21 from the 3-point line after the 2-for-11 start.

TURNING POINT: The Mavericks went on a 3-minute, 30-second scoring drought in the fourth quarter and watched an 88-87 deficit slip to 102-87 with 6:00 left. In that span, the Mavericks were 0-for-3 with three turnovers, an offensive foul and a technical foul on head coach Rick Carlisle.

HOT: Orlando starting point guard Jameer Nelson and Arenas combined to go 10-for-21, 6-for-12 from the 3-point line, for 30 points.

NOT: The Dallas defense allowed a season-high 117 points, 51.9 percent shooting, and came one point away from allowing every Orlando player who saw action to finish in double-figures. Magic guard J.J. Redick was 2-for-7 from the field and was the lone single-digit man with nine points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Howard had his 27th double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. He was 9-for-16 from the field and blocked two shots.

BAD MOVE: Dallas center Tyson Chandler picked up his sixth foul with his team trailing, 102-88, and desperately trying to rebound from a fourth-quarter cold spell. He then picked up a technical foul, and Orlando hit two of the three free throws to put the Mavericks down, 104-88, with 5:41 left in the game.

ROOKIE WATCH: Mavericks guard Dominique Jones, getting more playing time because of injuries to Nowitzki and Caron Butler, played nine minutes and finished with four points and two assists.

NOTABLE: Orlando's nine-game win streak in the longest current streak in the NBA...The Magic had at least six double-figure scorers for the seventh consecutive time...Orlando was 42-for-81 (51.9 percent) from the field, becoming just the second team to shoot at least 50 percent against the Mavericks this season.
