Amare Stoudemire's surgically repaired knees left the Phoenix Suns leery of giving their superstar the five-year contract he was looking for in the offseason.

The New York Knicks had no such reservations.

Stoudemire has rejuvenated the Knicks while enjoying one of the most productive seasons of his career heading into Friday night's return to Phoenix, where he'll find the franchise he deserted looking like a shell of its former self.

Six surgeries in eight years gave the Suns (14-19) plenty of reason to be concerned with Stoudemire's future, but they were hesitant to deal the five-time All-Star the past two seasons while making playoff pushes.

Holding onto Stoudemire after last season's trade deadline sparked a dominant second half and a run to the Western Conference finals, but Game 6 against the Lakers turned out to be his last in a Phoenix uniform. Stoudemire rejected a five-year, $96 million offer from the Suns that included stipulations on how many minutes he played, instead accepting a five-year, $100 million deal to become the face of the franchise in New York.

Phoenix wound up receiving a $16.5 million trade exception and a second-round draft pick for the sixth-leading scorer in franchise history.

"As a player, he's done great things here," coach Alvin Gentry told the Suns' official website this week. "I'm happy for him and I hope he wins every game - except the two he plays against us."

Stoudemire's knees have held up so far, and he has the Knicks (20-14) looking like they're headed for their first postseason appearance since 2003-04. He's averaged career highs of 26.4 points and 37.6 minutes after being reunited with former Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo offense.

"They are playing great basketball and obviously Amare is the focal point," Gentry said. "Looking over the course of his career, it doesn't surprise me what he's doing in New York at all."

The Knicks didn't win their 20th game last season until Feb. 26, but reached that plateau Tuesday against the league's best team. Wilson Chandler had a season-high 31 points while Stoudemire and Raymond Felton added 28 apiece in a 128-115 victory over San Antonio.

"We feel like we can match up with the best of them," Stoudemire said. "We played Miami tough in Miami, we played Boston tough both games, so we've got some quality wins against some pretty good teams. So we feel like we're right there, but we've just got to play with some consistency and keep it going all year."

While the Suns are hardly in ruins without Stoudemire, they look nothing like the team that was among the West's most dangerous with him and Steve Nash running together.

Phoenix, which failed to crack triple digits just 12 times last season, has been held under 100 eight times while going 3-10 since Dec. 7. The Suns' 99-95 loss to the visiting Lakers on Wednesday was their sixth in seven games.

The Suns might be headed for another trade deadline full of rumors if they keep losing at their current pace. Nash, signed through next season, has repeatedly said he's not interested in a trade, though that isn't likely to quell speculation that the team might deal him in order to rebuild.

As Phoenix continues to adjust to a rotation that swapped Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu for Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat, getting to 100 seems to be the key number. The Suns are 13-8 when they hit triple digits and 1-11 when they don't.

The Knicks have lost their last seven visits to Phoenix by an average of 15.3 points.

Stoudemire, 3-pointers lead Knicks in 121-96 rout

PHOENIX (AP) Amare Stoudemire made a triumphant return to Phoenix and his New York Knicks put on a performance that mirrored the high-flying Suns of years gone by.

The Knicks buried Phoenix with an avalanche of 17 3-pointers in a 121-96 rout. The 17 3s, in 33 attempts, matched New York's season high and were second-most in franchise history.

Stoudemire received a rousing ovation when he was introduced.

"It was great," he said. "It lets me know that the fans are still appreciative of the hard work I put on this court and the perseverance to injuries. It was a great ovation and I love the Phoenix fans forever."

Raymond Felton had his first career triple-double with 23 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the Suns matched their second-worst home loss since 2000.

"The ball was coming my way. Everybody did a great job of boxing out so it allowed me to get some rebounds," Felton said. "That's what really happened so I've got to take my hat off to my teammates. Once again they made me look good tonight."

Stoudemire had 19 by halftime. But it was the Knicks' sharpshooters who turned the game into a blowout with a 3-point barrage in a 38-point third quarter.

"I had one objective and that was to dominate from the start," Stoudemire said. "That was my main goal was to dominate from the get-go. I got it going early. Then in the second half they went to a zone and my teammates got it going."

It was the kind of performance Suns fans were accustomed to in coach Mike D'Antoni's 4 1/2 seasons in Phoenix, before he jumped ship for New York in 2008.

"They really followed what we tried to do," D'Antoni said, "take them off 3s, play them straight up, make them make hard jump shots and I thought that kind of set the tone. Then we were just hitting 3s and that was kind of the difference in the game."

Six Knicks sank 3s in their most one-sided win of the season, led by Felton's 5 of 10. Wilson Chandler scored 16, Shawne Williams 15 - going 4 of 9 on 3-pointers - and Landry Fields 14 for New York in its first stop on a four-game trip through the West.

Vince Carter scored 19 and Goran Dragic 17 for the sinking Suns, who have lost seven of eight and 11 of their last 14. Phoenix has scored fewer than 100 points for four straight games, the first time that's happened since December 2005.

Coach Alvin Gentry was predictably curt with his answers after the blowout.

"We didn't play well at all," he said. "I think we make progress defensively and then we take steps backwards. When we struggle with our shot, we have to be able to guard guys defensively so there's not that separation. We didn't do that. The end result was an embarrassing loss."

Seldom-used Knicks center Timofey Mozgov was ejected from the game for elbowing Robin Lopez with 3 1/2 minutes to play.

The Knicks made 7-of-10 3-pointers in their 38-point third quarter and were 9 of 15 in the second half.

New York led 55-45 at the half, then turned the game into a blowout with a 14-0 third-quarter outburst. Williams had a three-point play and two 3s in the run, Felton hit a 3, then capped the run with a lob to Stoudemire for an emphatic dunk, the power forward pumping his fist in triumph before his feet hit the ground.

Stoudemire played eight seasons with the Suns, making five All-Star teams, before signing a five-year, $100 million contract with the Knicks. He is off to the best start of his career, entering the game as the league's No. 2 scorer behind Kevin Durant.

The game was a glaring example of the Knicks' rise in confidence and the Suns' fade with a mishmash of wing players and no strength in the middle.

New York took its biggest lead with a 14-5 run, punctuated by Williams' 3-pointer, that made it 115-81 with 5:16 to play and most of the crowd long gone.

Notes: The Knicks play the Lakers in Los Angeles on Sunday night. New York has lost six straight to the Lakers with its last win coming Feb. 13, 2007, in Los Angeles. ... Lopez, a former starter in Gentry's doghouse, didn't get into the game until there was just over six minutes to play. ... The Suns and Knicks meet in New York on Jan. 17. ... Phoenix had won six of the last eight against the Knicks. ... The Knicks earned their 21st win, something they didn't do last season until March 3.

THE FACTS: It was probably the worst time for Amar'e Stoudemire to return to Phoenix and the struggling Suns reached a new low, getting blown out by 25 points in their own arena with their former superstar leading the way. Raymond Felton mastered Steve Nash with the first triple-double of his career with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists while once-potent Suns were held under 100 points for the fourth straight game.

"The ball was coming my way," Felton said. "Everybody was doing a great job of boxing out, so it allowed me to get some rebounds so I have to take my hat off to my teammates. We had great defense and we were clicking on all cylinders. I thought it was one of our best games of the year. How bad was it for the Suns? The Knicks who came into the game 29th in the NBA in rebounding percentage and 21st in overall rebounding, outrebounded the Suns 59-34. That's about par for the course lately for the Suns, who have been outrebounded by an average of 23 (55-32) in the last three games. The Knicks moved to 21-14 -- they didn't win their 21st game until Mar. 3 last season -- while the Suns have now lost seven of the last nine and 11 of the last 14 to since six games under .500 (14-20).

THE STAT: The Knicks gave the Suns a dose of their own medicine with their own system, hitting 17 of 33 3-pointers. The 17 3-pointers are the most against Phoenix this season and the third-highest total against a Suns team in their franchise history. Both the Milwaukee Bucks (Mar. 28, 2006) and the Golden State Warriors (Apr. 8, 2005) had 18 3-pointers against Phoenix.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks led by 10 at the half (55-45) but blew out the Suns with a run of 14 straight points in the third quarter. New York had seven 3-pointers in the quarter, with two by Shawne Williams and one by Felton coming during the run --capped by an alley-oop dunk by Stoudemire that was punctuated by a fist pump.

QUOTABLE II: "We can't quit, and that's not in our blood. I don't think anyone here just wants to give up or get negative on us. There have been worse teams in worse situations, so we're not going to give up."

INSIDE THE ARENA: Stoudemire was introduced to an overwhelming number of cheers from Suns fans -- many of them standing -- before Friday's game. Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni received a nice round of applause as well. Some fans booed Stoudemire, but by far the loudest chorus was saved for the home team when they fell behind 22 points at the end of the third period. The crowd booed lustily, and then headed for home.

NOTABLE: Knicks center Timofey Mozgov came in for mop-up duty but only lasted four minutes before he was ejected after getting in a scrum with Suns center Robin Lopez -- who went from starter to mop-up man himself and was in a sour mood on Friday.
