Warriors-Hornets Preview

The New Orleans Hornets have been absolutely dominating on defense lately, but keeping up that trend might be difficult given their recent history against the Golden State Warriors.

The Hornets look to win their fourth straight when they host the Warriors on Wednesday night.

New Orleans (21-14) has given up an average of 79.7 points on 40.2 percent shooting during a three-game winning streak. The opposition has been held to 22.4 percent from 3-point range (13 of 58) in that span.

Following road wins over Boston and Washington, the Hornets returned home and defeated Philadelphia 84-77 on Monday. The 76ers shot 34.1 percent - the lowest mark by a New Orleans opponent this season.

"The last three games we're 81, 81, 77 in terms of holding opponents under 85 points," coach Monty Williams said. "To do that in the NBA says a lot about your defense and it boils down to the guys not just making plays on offense, but defensively, also, getting rebounds."

While the Hornets have stifled their opponents over the last week, that hasn't been the case recently against the Warriors (13-21). Golden State has scored 131 points in each of the last two meetings and both clubs have topped 100 in the past five.

New Orleans, though, is focused on maintaining its defensive intensity going into its first matchup of the season with Golden State.

"It's about continuing what we've been doing and trying to put some wins together," said David West, who has averaged 25.2 points and 12.4 rebounds in his last five games against the Warriors.

The Hornets haven't won four in a row since opening the season with eight straight victories. They are 14-4 at home.

Golden State is trying to close its five-game road trip on a high note after another second-half letdown in its last game. The Warriors have lost their last two, including a 110-90 defeat to Orlando on Monday, to fall to 1-3 on the trip.

After blowing a 14-point halftime lead in Miami two nights earlier, Golden State was outscored 66-37 after the break by the Magic. The Warriors have shot 31.8 percent in the second half of their last two games.

"Maybe we can just play a half and go home," said coach Keith Smart, whose team fell to 5-15 on the road. "We played very, very good basketball against two elite teams and for whatever reason, didn't come out in the second half and play at the level necessary to win."

Starting center David Lee sat out with a bruised back and is day to day. Golden State is 1-8 without Lee, averaging 15.0 points and 10.1 rebounds.

"It's a big body that we needed," guard Stephen Curry said.

Curry is averaging 14.0 points in six games since missing six with a sprained ankle. He was scoring 20.1 per game before getting hurt.

Monta Ellis is averaging 20.8 points in the last five games after a three-game stretch during which he averaged 39.7. He averaged 27.3 points and 9.0 assists in three games against Golden State last season.

The Warriors have lost three straight in New Orleans.

Ellis scores 29, Warriors beat Hornets 110-103

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Golden State had been here before.

After fading badly in the second half of losses to Miami and Orlando before traveling to New Orleans, the Warriors decided to turn that trend around.

Monta Ellis scored 29 points and Golden State beat the New Orleans Hornets 110-103 on Wednesday night.

"We just pulled together as a team and made plays for each other," Ellis said. "We needed this win."

Trailing 82-72 after three quarters, they went on a 27-7 run in the first 7 minutes of the fourth to go ahead 99-89, then hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory after the Hornets got within two.

Stephen Curry had 21 points for Golden State, and Dorell Wright and David Lee each added 13.

Chris Paul led New Orleans with 24 points, one off his season high, but was scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter. He also had 13 assists, but was on the bench at the start of the fourth when Golden State got back in the game.

The Warriors outscored the Hornets 12-3 while he sat.

"We have to get consistent production out of our bench," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "Too many times our starters are giving us leads and we're not sustaining."

David West and Marco Belinelli added 16 points apiece for the Hornets. Trevor Ariza scored 15.

Golden State finished a 2-3 road trip. New Orleans lost for the first time in four games.

Ellis sparked the decisive spurt with consecutive 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter and Wright gave the Warriors their first lead since the second with a 3 that made the score 90-89.

Golden State scored four points on its next trip down the court. Lee scored on a power move, fouling out New Orleans center Emeka Okafor in the process. Okafor argued the call and was given a technical, which Curry converted. Lee hit his free throw, too.

Ekpe Udoh followed with an inside basket and Curry drilled a 3-pointer as Golden State went ahead 99-89 with 4:15 left.

"Teams think that all we want to do is run up and down the floor, but in the end we know where our guys have to be in order to score," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "They did a great job of getting to the spots where we can run our offense the right way."

The Hornets responded with a 12-2 run, getting six points in a row from Ariza. He converted his own four-point play, coming up with a steal and layup despite a hard foul from Curry, then grabbing the rebound of his missed free throw and dunking as the Hornets pulled within 101-95.

Ariza scored again, and Paul fed Willie Green for a transition layup that cut the deficit to 101-99 with 2:34 left after Ellis missed from outside.

New Orleans had three chances to tie or go ahead on its next possession, but Belinelli clanged a 3-pointer, West got blocked inside and Green missed an off-balance shot. The Hornets did not make a field goal the rest of the way, ending their chance of winning four in a row for the first time since they started the season 8-0.

"We made a run, but we put ourselves in a hole," Paul said. "We just have to close out teams like that. That was a bad loss for us."

The Warriors hit eight consecutive free throws in the final 1:12 to seal the victory, avoiding the bad finishes that plagued them in the first three quarters. The Hornets outscored them 12-4 to close the first, 18-5 at the end of the second and 10-4 to finish the third.

Notes: Golden State's 38-point fourth quarter was the highest total by a Hornets opponent this season. ... New Orleans is 1-8 when allowing 100 points or more. ... Paul missed four of his first five free throws after hitting 91.3 percent entering the game. ... Lee started after missing a game with a sore back. The Warriors are 1-8 when he is out of the lineup.

THE FACTS: Monta Ellis sparked a major comeback as his 29 points led the Golden State Warriors to a 110-103 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night at the New Orleans Arena. The Warriors snapped the Hornets' three-game winning streak.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors made their second largest comeback win possible when they turned an 82-72 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter into a 99-89 lead with 4:14 left in the game going on a 27-7 run.

QUOTABLE: "I just thought they wanted to pace it down. We needed to pace it up with what we wanted to do. Not just be fast and taking quick shots, but get the pace up to the area of the floor that we wanted. We know what we want to do when we fast break. People see our team sometimes and think we're going to run, run, run."

THE STAT: The Warriors scored 38 points in the fourth quarter. It was the most points the defensive-minded Hornets surrendered in a single quarter in any game this season.

HOT: The Warriors in the fourth quarter as they shot 64.7 percent from the field in the final 12 minutes. Ellis scored 12 of his game-high 29 points in the final quarter.

NOT: The Hornets from the free throw line and holding onto the basketball. New Orleans missed 12 free throws and turned the ball over 18 times, which turned into 21 points for the Warriors.

QUOTABLE II: "It's not me calling these guys out, (but) too many times our starters are giving us leads and we're not sustaining. That's unfair to the starting lineup. ... We have to have balance. Trying to change the rotation on a night-in, night-out basis to cover up some of the mistakes we're having. ... I've got to make some changes in my rotation."

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors first-round pick forward Ekpe Udoh hit a couple of big shots in the fourth quarter and played eight minutes in the final frame.

NOTABLE: Warriors forward/center David Lee returned to the starting lineup after missing Monday's game in Orlando with a bruised lower back. Lee scored 13 points in 25 minutes of action. ... Warriors center Andris Biedrins played and started for the first time after missing the previous nine games with a sprained left ankle. Biedrins scored four points in 13 minutes. ... You can't blame the loss on Hornets guard Chris Paul as he scored 24 points and dished out 13 assists. You can't blame the Hornets starters either as they shot 54.9 percent from the field.
