In the last meeting between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Grizzlies took advantage of a slumping Los Angeles team and earned a close victory, handing the Lakers their third loss in a season-high four-game skid.

A lot has changed since then.

The teams meet for the third time this season Sunday in Los Angeles, with the Lakers appearing back on track and the Grizzlies possibly without their leading scorer.

Los Angeles (23-10) won its second straight Friday, beating Philadelphia 102-98 in a game it never trailed. Kobe Bryant scored 33 points - his first 30-point game since Dec. 15 - and Pau Gasol added 20.

Lamar Odom had his second straight productive night off the bench after starting his first 31 games, scoring 18 points.

Despite a late rally by the 76ers, the Lakers held on to regain some momentum heading into 2011 following a three-game losing streak Dec. 21-28 in which they were held to 82 points or less in each contest.

"Obviously, there's games that we're going to close out better," Gasol said. "But if you finish out the year with a win, you should be satisfied."

The Lakers were anything but satisfied after their 98-96 loss to the Grizzlies on Nov. 30. Rudy Gay blocked Ron Artest's last-second shot to preserve the victory.

Gasol, who spent his first six-plus seasons with Memphis before being traded to Los Angeles midway through the 2007-08 season, was just 5 of 13 from the field in that game. He has averaged 16.5 points against his former team - less than his career average of 18.8.

Gay, however, may miss Sunday's contest depending on his health. Gay leads Memphis (14-19) averaging 20.7 points, but he sat out Saturday's 98-92 loss at Utah with a stomach virus.

Zach Randolph attempted to pick up the lost production and scored 27 points with 16 rebounds to record his 20th double-double of the season.

Memphis' bench, though, was outscored 32-6 as the Grizzlies lost their second straight and fifth in seven games after a season-high four-game winning streak.

"We didn't make enough plays. We were getting stops and then we were turning the ball over," coach Lionel Hollins told the team's official website. "Then when we started scoring, we couldn't get stops. They made some big plays. We just didn't get it done."

O.J. Mayo, making his first start in five games, scored 18 points after averaging 14.0 off the bench in the previous four, but was just 6 of 18 from the field.

Mike Conley scored a season-high 28 points in the last meeting with the Lakers, but he's averaged 12.3 and topped 20 just once since.

Bryant has seemed to enjoy facing the Grizzlies throughout his career. He has scored 40-plus points seven times, scoring more than 50 twice and hitting for 60 on March 22, 2007.

The Lakers have won seven of the last nine meetings, including a 124-105 home victory Nov. 2. They've beaten Memphis in four straight and six of eight at Staples Center.

Rudy Gay gets 27, Grizzlies rout Lakers 104-85

LOS ANGELES (AP) Rudy Gay and the Memphis Grizzlies didn't get overly excited about beating the Los Angeles Lakers so thoroughly that the Staples Center crowd booed its two-time champions off the court.

The Grizzlies were just pleased they had seized their second chance for a fresh start to the new year.

Gay scored 27 points, Zach Randolph added 21 points and eight rebounds, and the Grizzlies roared away in the second half for a 104-85 victory over the lifeless Lakers on Sunday night.

One day after a rough loss at Utah, and four days after losing to the NBA-worst Sacramento Kings, the Grizzlies' blowout had their bench standing in celebration for much of the second half.

"Whenever you play good basketball, things like this happen," said Gay, who spent most of the past three days off in bed with a stomach virus. "It's just like any other team. Every other team in this league is looking at them like they're just another team to beat. With all due respect to them, they're a great team, but I felt that we came out here and played great basketball."

O.J. Mayo scored 15 points for the Grizzlies, who made a 19-4 run in the third quarter to take a 17-point lead. Los Angeles never threatened to get back in it despite a 21-point second half by Kobe Bryant, and the Lakers were left wondering how the Grizzlies are just 15-19 after losing to Memphis twice in less than five weeks.

"We feel like we can play with anybody, and we should have a better record than we have," said point guard Mike Conley, who had 12 points and six assists. "We've laid eggs here and there, but we're working hard to become a more consistent team."

Gay hit two 3-pointers, repeatedly scored in transition and punctuated his night with a steal and a dramatic dunk with 6:40 to play. Randolph went 9 for 17 in the low post to win his matchup with Pau Gasol, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.

"Coming out like this against the world champs should really motivate us to keep playing hard and winning," Randolph said. "This is really how we've got to play in the new year."

Bryant scored 28 points for the Lakers, who have lost three of their last four home games - all three by at least 16 points, with a narrow New Year's Eve win over Philadelphia in between - and four of six overall.

Los Angeles still leads the woeful Pacific Division by eight games, but the Lakers have looked decidedly average for most of the past two weeks. The Lakers made 20 turnovers and trailed by 26 points in the fourth quarter, eliciting boos from the fans who didn't leave early.

Although Bryant earned yet another technical foul for a post-basket outburst, he seemed more clinical than emotional afterward.

"We didn't execute well, and defensively we were poor," Bryant said. "We've just got to come out focused and ready to play. It's tough when you have to try to regenerate that energy every single night. It starts individually. You have to look at yourself and try to find things to get you going. Right now we can't beat anybody, but we'll be fine."

Andrew Bynum had nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Lakers, but Memphis scored 28 fast-break points and repeatedly beat Los Angeles down the court.

Los Angeles appeared exhausted at times during its fourth game in six days, and it's a problem that's only going to get worse. The Lakers are early in a stretch of 15 games in 25 days, and they won't get consecutive days off again until Jan. 22-23.

"We're not really playing together, and as a result, it's costing us," Bynum said. "Right now, we've got to be concerned. We have to be. ... Good teams are looking at us like we're soft."

Memphis took a nine-point lead at halftime and then took control with a 19-4 run late in the third quarter after Bryant shot the Lakers back into it with 17 third-period points. Bryant was visibly frustrated, slapping the back of a seat in anger when he came out of the game in the third. The crowd agreed with its boos.

Gay scored 10 points in the first quarter for the Grizzlies, pushing them to an early lead. Randolph scored 15 first-half points on 7-for-10 shooting, and Memphis closed the second quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 48-39 lead.

NOTES: Joe Smith made his Lakers debut in the final 4:36. The former No. 1 pick had sat out all seven games since the Lakers acquired him from New Jersey in a trade for Sasha Vujacic on Dec. 15. ... THE FACTS: Five players scored in double figures for the Memphis Grizzlies, who raced to a 104-85 victory Sunday against the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, eliciting a chorus of boos from the sold-out crowd at Staples Center.

THE STAT: The Lakers had a season-low 13 assists, compared to 30 for Memphis. They also committed 20 turnovers, compared to nine for the Grizzlies, and were out-rebounded, 54-42

TURNING POINT: Kobe Bryant's fall-away jumper cut a 13-point deficit to two with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lakers went cold again as the Grizzlies clicked off a 19-4 run to put the game away.

QUOTABLE II: "They had their run a couple times, but we called a couple time outs, slowed them down, got back to what we were doing. We played the game as well as you can play it against such a quality opponent."

HOT: Memphis small forward Rudy Gay, who sat out the Grizzlies' last game with a stomach virus, showed no ill effects as he produced 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field.

NOT: In the last 12 days, the Lakers have lost by 19 points to the sub-.500 Milwaukee Bucks, never came close against the Miami Heat in a much-hyped nationally televised game on Christmas, lost by double digits to the San Antonio Spurs, their biggest challenge in the Western Conference, and looked completely disinterested against the Grizzlies, the last place team in the Southwest Division.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Kobe Bryant scored 17 of his team-high 28 points in the third quarter, giving the Lakers a brief nudge in the right direction, but they couldn't sustain the momentum.

GOOD MOVE: The Grizzlies recognized the Lakers didn't have any zip in their step and ran them ragged for 28 fast-break points, compared to five for Los Angeles. And when Memphis couldn't run, it went inside for another 50 points in the paint. The Lakers, meanwhile, could only muster 36.

BAD MOVE: Bryant took it upon himself to bring the Lakers back from the 13-point deficit, but his one-on-one play took the rest of the team out of its rhythm and left them standing around. None of Bryant's teammates scored more than two points in the third quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Memphis back-up point guard Greivis Vasquez made his only two field-goal attempts and produced five points, three assists and two rebounds in 16 minutes. His numbers were better than Lakers starting point guard Derek Fisher, who finished with five points, one assist and one rebound in 23 minutes.

NOTABLE: In their last four losses, the Lakers have been outscored in 15 of 16 quarters.
