The Atlanta Hawks have been sluggish offensively on the road over the past month. Trying to break out of that funk against a defensively solid Los Angeles Clippers team might not be that easy.

The Hawks try to avoid losing for the eighth time in 10 games away from Atlanta on Sunday when they visit the Clippers in their first meeting of the season.

Atlanta (21-14) opened a four-game road trip Friday with a 103-94 loss to Oklahoma City. Jamal Crawford had a team-high 26 points off the bench, but the Hawks starters were outscored 74-58.

The game ended on a bit of a sour note with Thunder guard Russell Westbrook pushing the ball up the court to Serge Ibaka for a dunk with 6.9 seconds left to complete a triple-double instead of running out the clock.

"You don't do that. The game is over with," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. "The game is over with. You've got the ball, you run the clock out. Just that plain and simple."

Although Drew was upset with the way the game ended, his biggest concern would seem to be getting his offense on track, especially on the road.

The Hawks have been held to double digits in 11 straight road games, and are 2-7 away from Philips Arena since Dec. 4, averaging just 86.2 points.

Since around that same time, Los Angeles (10-23) has turned up its defensive intensity.

The Clippers were 4-17 and 24th in the league in scoring defense at 104.1 points on Dec. 5, but have since allowed an average of 95.0 points while splitting 12 games.

Los Angeles didn't have its best defensive showing in Wednesday's 103-95 loss to Utah, just its second defeat in seven games, but coach Vinny Del Negro attributed most of the troubles to a stagnant offense. The Clippers, who started a stretch of eight of nine games at Staples Center, managed just 13 third-quarter points, putting extra pressure on the defense.

"It was our offense that hurt us more than our defense," Del Negro said. "We had some turnovers and we lacked ball movement."

One bright spot for Los Angeles was another overpowering performance from Blake Griffin.

The 6-foot-10 Griffin finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds for his 20th consecutive double-double, breaking the Clippers' rookie record set by Michael Cage during the 1986-87 season, and giving Griffin the longest such streak by any NBA rookie in the last 40 years.

Griffin has already notched 26 double-doubles in 33 games, and his streak is the third-longest in the last decade, trailing only Kevin Garnett (37) and David Lee (24).

"That's what happens when you play well as a team and everyone contributes," Griffin said of his streak. "But it doesn't mean a win, so we've just got to get better."

The Clippers were swept in last season's two-game series to the Hawks, and have lost six of the last eight meetings.

Atlanta's Joe Johnson averaged 26.0 points on 52.8 percent shooting against Los Angeles in 2009-10, while Al Horford averaged 23.5 points on 68.0 percent shooting.

Johnson, Smith rally Hawks past Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) Joe Johnson and Josh Smith regained their shooting touches just in time for the Atlanta Hawks, who appeared headed for another loss after shooting 37.1 percent in the first half and falling behind by as many as 16 points.

Johnson scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and Smith added 22, rallying the Hawks to a 107-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Smith missed his first eight shots and finished 5 for 14. He ended his drought on a 3-pointer that trimmed Los Angeles' lead to 55-48 with 10:14 left in the third quarter and made two more clutch 3s 66 seconds apart down the stretch.

"It was like a tremendous weight off my shoulders," Smith said of the first one. "One thing about me is that I don't give up on myself. I believe in myself and my teammates believe in me. That's why they kept feeding me the ball, and I was able to knock down a couple of jumpers in the second half. I was open and my teammates got me the ball and I just stepped into my shots and let it go. In the first half, I was fading away."

Johnson, who returned to the lineup on Dec. 17 after missing nine games following right elbow surgery, was 7 for 20 from the field after going 18 of 51 over his previous three games. In Friday's loss at Oklahoma City, the four-time All-Star guard missed 14 of 20 attempts - including all six from 3-point range.

"I liked seeing how we fought back after being down," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "This was a grinder. We knew that coming in, and that's what happened."

Clippers rookie Blake Griffin scored 19 of his 31 points in the first half and pulled down 15 rebounds for his 27th double-double and 21st in a row. But he shot 3 for 10 in the second half and didn't find as much free space above the rim as he normally gets.

"I thought we just did a good job of battling him," Drew said. "We didn't do anything special from a strategic standpoint. When you play a guy like that, you need to be prepared to play a physical game because that's what he's going to bring. He's a load, and it takes a team effort to defend a guy like that."

The Hawks went on a 15-2 run to turn a seven-point deficit into a 91-85 lead with 4:42 left in the game. Jamal Crawford, who finished with 24 points, began the rally with three free throws after getting fouled by Eric Gordon behind the arc. DeAndre Jordan was whistled for goaltending on Johnson's short jumper with 6 minutes to play, giving the Hawks an 86-85 lead.

It was Atlanta's first lead since Mike Bibby opened the game with a 15-foot jumper.

"In the second half we didn't stop them at all," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They scored at will against us and our energy defensively was not good enough. Our bench turned the ball over way too much, and that hurt. We can't give a team like that extra possessions."

Smith added a 3-pointer and Johnson capped the decisive run with five points. Crawford then hit a 17-footer, Al Horford followed with a layup and Bibby added a 3 to help seal the victory. Smith also had 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.

"We just have to do a better job of finishing out games," Griffin said. "Our offense got a little stagnant and they hit some shots."

Gordon, who came in with a team-high 23.8 scoring average, spent the final 8:27 of the first quarter on the bench after picking up two fouls 46 seconds apart. But it didn't faze the Clippers, whose game-opening 19-8 run included a slam dunk by Griffin off a no-look, over-the-shoulder alley-oop pass from Baron Davis. Los Angeles led 31-18 at the end of the quarter after shooting 15 for 20.

NOTES: Michael Cage, whose record for consecutive double-doubles by a Clippers player was broken by Griffin last Wednesday, was a pregame and postgame guest commentator for Sunday's local telecast on Fox Sports Net - an assignment that was scheduled a month earlier. Cage, who lives in Newport Beach, was sitting under the Clippers' basket on Nov. 20 at Staples Center when Griffin scored a career-high 44 points - including that now-famous dunk he made over Knicks rookie Timofey Mozgov by balancing his non-shooting hand on Mozgov's head before throwing it down. "My kids 'You Tube' him all the time. I can't get away from it," a smiling Cage told the Associated Press. "Every time I wake up, it's "Dad, come here. Let me show you this Blake Griffin dunk from last night.' And it's really kind of neat, because it's been a long time since the Clippers have had a fun, exciting player that appeals to the whole league." ... THE FACTS: The Atlanta Hawks rallied from a 13-point deficit with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter Sunday afternoon and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 107-98, at Staples Center.

THE STAT: Three players scored more than 20 points for the Hawks. Joe Johnson finished with 29, Jamal Crawford had 24 off the bench and Josh Smith bounced back from a poor-shooting first half to score 22.

TURNING POINT: The Clippers held a 71-58 lead with 4:13 remaining in the third when Crawford scored eight straight points in 12-3 run that cut the deficit to four entering the fourth.

HOT: The Hawks set season highs for second-half points (65), fourth quarter points (37) and second half field goal percentage (65.5 percent). They outscored the Clippers, 65-45, in the second half, including 37-24, in the fourth quarter. They shot 11-for-15 in the fourth.

NOT: Clippers guard Eric Gordon, who came in ninth in the league in scoring at 23.8 points a game, finished with 10 points on 3-for-14 shooting, his worst shooting performance of the season. Gordon picked up two fouls in the first three minutes, returned three minutes into the second quarter but never seemed to find his rhythm, shooting 0-for-5 from beyond the three-point stripe.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Clippers rookie Blake Griffin recorded his 21st consecutive double-double, which ties for the third-longest in the NBA since the 1991-92 season. Griffin had one of his most productive games this season, finishing with a game-high 31 points and 15 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Davis is beginning to look like his former self. He made a nifty behind-the-back dribble on a drive to the basket and laid the ball in with his left hand to give the Clippers a 69-56 lead midway through the third quarter. He finished with 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting and dished out five assists.

BAD MOVE: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro elected to go with rookie small forward Al-Farouq Aminu in the fourth quarter, rather than keep Ryan Gomes on the floor, or even go with Rasual Butler. Aminu struggled mightily down the stretch, missing all four field-goal attempts and committing a costly turnover that led to a wide-open 3-pointer by Smith, giving the Hawks a four-point lead with 5:26 remaining.

ROOKIE WATCH: Eric Bledsoe turned in a strong game for the Clippers while subbing for Davis. He finished with 10 points and three assists in just over 21 minutes.

NOTABLE: The Clippers can't blame their last two losses on tough scheduling. They play just five games from Dec. 29 to Jan. 12.
