Raptors-Rockets Preview

Not many teams could find positives from a loss that ended a five-game winning streak, but the Houston Rockets are still feeling pretty good about themselves.

The Rockets look to bounce back from a loss to one of the NBA's elite teams as they try for a fourth straight home win over the short-handed Toronto Raptors on Friday night.

Houston (15-16) missed a chance to move above .500 for the first time this season after suffering a 125-119 loss to Miami on Wednesday. The Rockets, who held four of their previous five opponents below 95 points, allowed a season-worst 58.1 percent shooting to a Heat team which has won 16 of 17.

"I hope at this point we've proven to ourselves that we can compete with anybody when we do the things we talk about," forward Shane Battier said. "If we continue to do the things we've been doing thing past month we'll be ok."

A bright spot Wednesday was Houston scoring more points against Miami than any other opponent this season. Five Rockets scored in double figures, led by Luis Scola with 20 points on 10-of-20 shooting. The rest of the team shot 39.7 percent.

"We weren't as sharp as we wanted to be," said Kevin Martin, who had 21 points and four steals. "But we got beat by five points by a pretty good team. It was a good test of where we're at right now and we are still confident."

Houston has averaged 108.3 points over its last nine games. It had 29 assists and matched a season low with seven turnovers Wednesday.

Toronto also is coming off a game against one of the league's top teams but came away with a surprising road win, 84-76 over Dallas on Tuesday - albeit the Mavericks were without Dirk Nowitzki.

The Raptors (11-20) were missing some key players as well and got held below 90 points for the second straight game, but a balanced effort offensively and a solid defensive night helped them end a three-game losing streak.

Rookie Ed Davis set career highs with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Linas Kleiza and DeMar DeRozan each added 16 points. Five players scored in double figures.

"It was a great team effort," guard Jerryd Bayless said. "I think everyone did their job."

Already depleted by injuries, Toronto lost Bayless in the fourth quarter to an ankle problem. Jose Calderon didn't start after injuring his left ankle the previous game.

The Raptors also were without Andrea Bargnani (strained calf), Reggie Evans (fractured foot), Sonny Weems (back spasms) and Peja Stojakovic (swollen knee).

Weems, Calderon and Bayless are all day to-day, while Amir Johnson (back spasms) and Leandro Barbosa (bruised knee) are game-time decisions. Bargnani, Evans and Stojakovic did not join the team on its three-game road trip, which ends Friday.

Bargnani had one of his best games of the season against Houston on Nov. 19, scoring 26 points in a 106-96 home victory. Martin led the Rockets with 31 points.

The Raptors have lost three straight in Houston, all by double digits. They are looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2005-06.

Budinger scores 22 to lead Rockets past Raptors

HOUSTON (AP) Chase Budinger hopes he's finally put his shooting woes behind him.

The Houston rookie reserve guard scored a season-high 22 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field to lead the Rockets in a 114-105 win over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night.

Budinger shot 36 percent in first 20 games as he recovered slowly from a sprained left ankle. He pored over game film, worked on his balance and has gone 12 for 18 in his last two games.

"I went through this already, where I had a couple of good games in a row, but then missed some shots," Budinger said. "But I just feel good right now. It feels good shooting the ball. My confidence has been up, and let's hope the slump is over."

Kevin Martin added 20 and rookie Patrick Patterson set career highs in points (15) and rebounds (10) for the Rockets, who've won eight of their last 10.

DeMar DeRozan scored 29 of his career-high 37 points in the second half and Jose Calderon had 11 assists for the Raptors, who've dropped 10 of their last 13 games.

"I wanted to play aggressively," said DeRozan, who went 13 for 14 from the free-throw line. "They needed me to step up and force them to foul me. I was able to finish and draw the contact."

Linas Kleiza had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Amir Johnson added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which finished with a 53-47 rebounding edge.

Houston's Jordan Hill scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in place of Chuck Hayes, who's out two to four weeks after spraining his ankle in practice on Thursday. Backup center Brad Miller scored 11 points with seven rebounds and six assists.

But the 6-foot-9 Patterson benefitted most by Hayes' absence, playing more than 25 minutes. He had appeared in only three games before Friday.

"I hate to step on the court because a teammate goes down, said Patterson, the Rockets' first-round pick last summer. "I saw it as an opportunity and I tried to seize the moment."

Miller sneaked up and splattered a towel-full of shaving cream on Patterson's face as he was swarmed by reporters for the first time this season.

"That means you made it, man," forward Shane Battier said. "Congratulations."

Budinger hit a jumper from the wing then flipped a pass to Patterson for a layup in the last minute of the third quarter to stretch Houston's lead to 84-75.

DeRozan scored 13 points in the third, the only Raptors player with more than two. Toronto has been ravaged by injuries this season and had only eight healthy players by the end of the game.

"With only eight healthy bodies, we needed more guys to play better," coach Jay Triano said.

Aaron Brooks and Courtney Lee drove for consecutive layups and Budinger made a 3 from the corner to extend the lead to 97-82.

DeRozan scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, but the Rockets carried their comfortable lead to the end, topping 110 points for the fourth time in their last six home games.

Trailing 34-20 after the first quarter, the Rockets' reserves cut the deficit to one over the first six minutes of the second quarter. Lee sank Houston's first 3, Miller scored inside and Budinger sprinted for a breakaway dunk to finish the 20-7 spurt.

The Rockets' bench outscored Toronto's reserves 65-23.

"That's kind of our goal as the second unit, to come in and bring energy," Budinger said. "We did a great job tonight, coming in and bringing the energy."

Houston shot 64 percent in the second quarter (18 of 28) and led 62-55 at the break. Martin and Luis Scola scored seven points apiece in the third quarter to keep the Rockets in front.

Julian Wright's dunk punctuated a 12-0 run in the first quarter that gave Toronto a 29-16 lead. Martin scored 11 points during that span, drawing fouls with drives down the lane and going 7 for 8 from the free-throw line.

Kleiza made a deep 3-pointer just before the first-quarter buzzer to put Toronto up 14. The Raptors shot 54 percent (14 of 26) and outrebounded Houston 18-8 in the first.

NOTES: The Rockets went 11-4 in December ... Houston has reached 60 points in a half 15 times this season. ... Martin has scored at least 20 points in eight straight games. ... Rockets-Raptors notebook

THE FACTS: With a little help from their bench, the Houston Rockets shook off a rocky start and defeated the short-handed Toronto Raptors 114-105 before an announced sellout crowd of 18,121 Friday at Toyota Center.

Reserve guard Chase Budinger led Houston (16-16) with a season-high 22 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Kevin Martin poured in 20. The Rockets have won six of their last seven games overall and nine of 10 at home.

DeMar Derozan scored a career-high 37 points on 12-for-21 shooting to pace Toronto (11-21), which has dropped four of its last five decisions.

THE STAT: Houston's reserves, which shot 26-for-47 overall (55.3 percent), outscored and outrebounded Toronto's bench 65-23 and 28-11, respectively.

TURNING POINT: The Raptors abused the Rockets in the paint and on the boards in the first quarter, but Houston turned the tables in the second by aggressively crashing the boards and limiting Toronto to only two fast-break points. The Rockets' offense also woke up in the second period as Houston recovered from a 6-for-19 (31.6 percent) start to finish the first half 24-for-47 (51.1 percent).

HOT: Houston's bench keyed the Rockets' comeback from an early 14-point deficit, scoring 35 points on 15-for-23 shooting (57.7 percent) and pulling down 13 rebounds in the first half.

NOT: After connecting on three of his first five shots, Toronto's Linas Kleiza missed four of his last 16 attempts to finish the game 7-for-21 from the field (33.3 percent).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Raptors guard Jose Calderon looked rusty in his return from a sore left foot, shooting just 4-for-10. But fantasy owners need not worry. Calderon made up for his poor shooting by distributing a game-high 11 assists to go with seven rebounds and two steals.

GOOD MOVE: After Derozan picked up his second foul 66 seconds into the game, Triano elected to send Leandro Barbosa into the game. The move worked well for Toronto as Barbosa finished the first quarter with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting.

ROOKIE WATCH: With Rockets center Chuck Hayes sidelined with a sprained left ankle, rookie Patrick Patterson took advantage of his increased playing time. He delivered the best performance of his young career Friday, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (four offensive) while flashing the athleticism and tenacity that drew Houston's interest in the 2010 NBA Draft.

QUOTABLE III: "The coaches just kept saying, 'rebound, rebound. Keep doing as much as you can. Provide a lot of energy.'"

NOTABLE: Hayes missed Friday's game with a severe left ankle sprain and will be out for two to four weeks before resuming workouts. ... Houston outscored the Raptors 42-21 in the second quarter, marking the most points the Rockets have scored and the second-most Toronto has allowed in one quarter this season. ... The Raptors have made at least one 3-pointer in an NBA-record 973 consecutive games. ... Houston has won four straight at home over Toronto. ...
