Rockets-Clippers Preview

With an improved effort on both ends of the court, the Los Angeles Clippers find themselves in an unfamiliar position.

Looking for a rare home victory over the surging Houston Rockets, the Clippers will try to extend their longest winning streak of the season Wednesday night.

After dropping 21 of its first 26, Los Angeles defeated Minnesota 113-90 on Monday night for its third straight win. The Clippers (8-21) haven't won four in a row since a season-best run Dec. 31, 2009-Jan. 10.

They are averaging 96.8 points and surrendering 100.8 on the season but have scored 107.3 and allowed 92.3 during the win streak.

"We just got together as a team and said we didn't feel like the worst team, even though that is what our record showed," said Blake Griffin, who recorded his 16th straight double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds Monday.

"Everybody since then has stepped up and did their part, nobody is trying to do too much. Everybody is doing exactly what they need to and that's how you win games."

Eric Gordon went 5 of 7 from 3-point range as he recorded a season-high 36 points Monday. He has made 61.5 percent of his attempts from long distance in his last three games.

"We are playing more as a team, we are just playing well together right now," Gordon said after Los Angeles matched a season high with 31 assists.

The Clippers will be short-handed Wednesday as forward Craig Smith is expected to miss at least two weeks with a herniated disc in his lower back. Smith is averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 13.9 minutes.

After starting its three-game trip with a 102-93 victory over Sacramento on Sunday, Houston (13-15) beat Golden State 121-112 on Monday night for its third straight win.

The Rockets have split their last six on the road after dropping eight of their first 10.

"I don't know what our road record is but I know it's not good, so these two wins and with a chance to go in to L.A. and try to get a sweep would be huge for us," point guard Kyle Lowry said. "Shane (Battier), before we left on this road trip, he made sure that our emphasis was on what we could do on this trip."

Kevin Martin scored 30 on Monday and is averaging 27.0 points in his previous six games, over which the Rockets have gone 5-1.

"We've been playing better as of late so it's easier to come out here with a little bit of confidence and win these games," said Battier, who went 4 of 6 from 3-point range against the Warriors.

Martin is averaging 22.0 points while going 10 of 18 from beyond the arc in his last three meetings with the Clippers.

The Rockets, who rank among the best in the NBA with 105.8 points per game, have taken 11 of the previous 13 matchups with the Clippers at Staples Center by an average of 11.6 points.

Houston hasn't won three straight on the road since Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 2009.

Rockets beat Clips for 4th straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kevin Martin didn't have time to talk after leading the Rockets to a sloppy victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. He was already out the door and down the hallway, heading to a red-eye flight home with the team looking forward to a four-day Christmas break.

Martin made his statement on the court by scoring 28 points, including four free throws in the final 16 seconds, and the Rockets held off the stubborn Clippers 97-92 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight victory after nearly blowing an 18-point lead in the second half.

"We had them on the ropes, but we got a little loose with the ball in the second half and allowed them to make a run," Shane Battier said. "We've got to do a better job of delivering that knockout blow."

Luis Scola added 22 points and Battier had 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Rockets, who never trailed and recorded their third wire-to-wire victory - one more than they had all of last season.

Houston has won 14 of 24 games after an 0-5 start and can reach the .500 mark for the first time this season with a victory against Washington when the team resumes play Monday at home.

"We're playing better," Battier said. "It took us a little while to find out who we were. We're playing with more confidence, and sometimes that goes a long way in this league."

Rookie Blake Griffin led Los Angeles with 24 points and tied a season high with 18 rebounds - his 17th straight double-double and 23rd overall.

"He's like (Evander) Holyfield. He's the real deal," Battier said. "I was impressed. If I could buy stock in Blake Griffin, I would put a fair amount of money into it. He plays fearlessly. No matter how hard he gets hit, he keeps comes back strong. He's so athletic and explosive and he's got a real good feel for the game. That's saying a lot for someone who's essentially a rookie."

Martin's 3-pointer gave the Rockets their biggest lead, 65-47, with 9:22 left in the third. The Clippers sliced it to 77-70 on Eric Bledsoe's 17-footer after an offensive foul at the other end by Brad Miller, who was hit with a technical during the ensuing timeout for continuing to argue the call.

Eric Gordon converted the free throw, then added a layup on the Clippers' next possession and Griffin cut it to 77-76 on a three-point play with 7:05 remaining. But the Rockets came back with an 11-2 run to pull away to an 88-78 lead with 4:18 to play.

Martin capped the run with a 3-pointer, and Scola hit a clutch 17-footer from the top of the key after Los Angeles sliced the margin to 88-84 on four free throws by DeAndre Jordan and a layup by Gordon.

Griffin drained a rare 3-pointer with 58 seconds to go, and rookie Al-Farouq Aminu cut Houston's lead to 93-92 with three free throws after getting fouled by Scola on a jumper behind the 3-point line. But that was as close as they got. Griffin missed on an attempted tying 3-point shot with 4 seconds on the clock.

"We needed points, so we were trying to take 3s to get back into the game if we didn't have a 2," Griffin said. "But I missed too many easy ones tonight and that hurt us. I thought we had energy all the way through, and we kept fighting and fighting. But they hit shots. Kevin Martin played extremely well, especially down the stretch."

Gordon, coming off a season-high 36-point effort Monday night in a 113-90 win over Minnesota, picked up two fouls in his first 4 1/2 minutes on the floor and had to watch from the bench the rest of the first half as Bledsoe and Randy Foye tried to bring the Clippers back from a 16-point deficit.

Ike Diogu, who was signed by the Clippers as a free agent on Wednesday because of injuries to Chris Kaman, Craig Smith and Brian Cook, scored eight points in 17 minutes.

NOTES: Diogu, picked ninth overall in the 2005 draft by Golden State, sat out all of last season because of microfracture surgery on his left knee and played in just three preseason games with Detroit before he was cut. ... The Clippers are 0-17 when trailing after three quarters.

THE FACTS: The Houston Rockets matched their longest winning streak in two seasons Wednesday night, holding off the Los Angeles Clippers 97-92 at Staples Center for their fourth consecutive victory.

THE STAT: The Rockets never trailed in the game, building a 16-point lead in the opening quarter that was cut to four at the half. They stretched it back to 18 in the third quarter before the Clippers closed within a point with 18 seconds remaining. Kevin Martin made four free throws down the stretch to halt the comeback.

TURNING POINT: Clippers leading scorer Eric Gordon was whistled twice for fouls in the first 4:25, left with 6:40 remaining in the first quarter and sat out the remainder of the half with zero points. Gordon played all 24 minutes of the second half, scoring 18 points, but it was too little, too late.

HOT: Martin scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, none more important than the free throws he sank down the stretch.

NOT: Clippers point guard Baron Davis shot 2-for-9 from the field with four turnovers and couldn't keep up with Lowry or backup Aaron Brooks. Lowry blew by him for a layup with 39.7 seconds remaining, pushing Houston's lead to 92-87.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Clippers rookie forward Blake Griffin stirred the crowd into a frenzy late in the first quarter with a high-flying left-handed slam off an alley-oop pass that forced him to duck under the rim. He finished with a team-high 24 points and matched his season-high with 18 rebounds while playing the entire second half. It was his 17th consecutive double-double.

GOOD MOVE: Despite giving away four inches, Chuck Hayes did an admirable job guarding Griffin, using his 238-pound wide body to keep him away from the rim for most of the game. Griffin settled for an unusually high number of perimeter shots, including his second 3-point basket of the season on his third attempt.

BAD MOVE: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro not only sat Gordon for all but 5:20 of the first half, but he also benched Griffin for the final 10 minutes after he picked up his second foul. Ryan Gomes, who was coming off a season-high 22 points in a victory Monday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, also played just 5:20 of the first half after picking up two fouls.

ROOKIE WATCH: Clippers backup point guard Eric Bledsoe was better than Davis on this night, totaling four points, four assists and just one turnover. Al-Farouq Aminu played just 6 1/2 minutes for Los Angeles, but he made three consecutive free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt with 18 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 93-92. Unfortunately, it was the last points the Clippers would score.

NOTABLE: Ike Diogu, who was picked up by the Clippers earlier Wednesday after not playing a regular-season game since 2008-09, looked surprisingly fit, scoring eight points on 4-for-7 shooting and grabbing three rebounds in 16 1/2 minutes of play.
