The Atlanta Hawks continue to thrive at home due in large part to their much-improved effort on the defensive end of the court.

Looking for a third straight win over the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers, the Hawks try for a season-best eighth consecutive victory at Philips Arena on Wednesday night.

After allowing 99.8 points over its first eight home games, Atlanta (18-12) has held opponents to 91.9 on 41.6 percent shooting over the seven-game run.

The Hawks limited Orlando to 35.2 percent shooting - an opponent season low - in their 91-81 victory Monday night while Al Horford led the way with a team-best 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Josh Smith had 12 points and 10 boards, and he also added three blocks as the Hawks improved to 15-4 when he registers at least two.

After falling 89-82 to last-place New Jersey on Sunday, Smith knows the danger in overlooking a slumping club such as the Cavaliers, who have lost 11 of 12 and 11 straight on the road.

"I wish we could get revved up for everybody else like we get revved up for Orlando and other good teams with good records," said Smith, who was held to six points in a 100-88 win at Cleveland on Nov. 2.

Joe Johnson scored 17 against the Magic and is averaging 15.7 points on 33.3 percent shooting over three games following an early return from surgery to remove loose cartilage in his shooting elbow.

Cleveland is on the verge of recording its longest road slide since dropping 13 in a row Oct. 29-Dec. 15, 2003.

The Cavaliers (8-20) defeated New York 109-102 in overtime Saturday to snap a 10-game losing streak before falling 101-90 to Utah on Monday night despite making a season-best 12 3-pointers.

"For me, and hopefully for the guys in that locker room, losing is always frustrating. I don't like it. I don't enjoy it," coach Byron Scott said. "I can deal with it because we are going to continue to get better. I know the guys in that locker room will continue to give me that same effort."

After scoring 11 points on 4-of-20 shooting against the Knicks, Daniel Gibson made 7 of 8 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 29 points.

"I'm not real big on personal things. If it results in a win, then I'm excited about it," said Gibson, who is shooting 63.0 percent from 3-point range over his previous six games. "If we are not winning, then for me, I just want to figure out what we need to do in order to win our next game."

Gibson and the Cavs may want to take a lesson from the Hawks and start on defense, as they are surrendering 102.9 points per game - 107.9 on the road. Cleveland is 3-17 when allowing 100 or more points.

Mo Williams scored 16 points and dished out 10 assists against the Jazz. He is averaging 20.3 points and 11.6 assists in his last three games.

Cleveland had taken five straight from Atlanta before falling in the previous two meetings.

Healthy Johnson, Hawks beat Cavaliers 98-84

ATLANTA (AP) Joe Johnson's first game with 20 points in almost a month helped the Atlanta Hawks recover from a sluggish start against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Johnson scored 23 points in his best game since his return from surgery on his right elbow to lead the Hawks past Antawn Jamison and the Cavaliers, 98-84 on Wednesday night.

Johnson missed nine games after the surgery and then struggled to regain his form in his first three games back in action. He returned to the form of the All-Star who has averaged more than 20 points in each of his first five seasons in Atlanta.

"Joe came back without any practices, and he finally found the stroke," Atlanta's Josh Smith said. "He played lights out tonight."

Johnson reached 20 points for the first time since scoring 21 in a win over Washington on Nov. 25.

The Hawks, coming off an emotional home win over Orlando on Monday night, led by only three points at halftime.

"The tendency is to have a mental letdown," Hawks coach Larry Drew said

Led by Johnson, the Hawks pushed the lead to 13 points with a strong start in the second half.

Jamison had 23 points but the Hawks were stronger with their typically balanced attack in their eighth straight home victory.

Al Horford had 18 points, Marvin Williams added 17 and Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks. Mo Williams had 18 points and Daniel Gibson added 12 for Cleveland. The Cavaliers have lost 12 straight on the road and 12 of 13 overall.

Johnson hit consecutive 3-pointers midway through the fourth quarter to push Atlanta's lead to 13 points at 91-78.

"I could be 6-9 and you're not going to stop those shots," Gibson said. "Those were tough shots. He just got it going and got the separation they needed. You can't guard guys like that individually. It's more of a team effort."

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said it was no surprise Johnson had the biggest shots of the game.

"That's what great players do," Scott said. "Those guys are difference-makers. Joe's not an All-Star and one of the better players in this league for nothing. When they needed some big shots, he seemed to make the timely ones."

Johnson has played four games since missed nine games recovering from surgery.

"I got into a little rhythm in the fourth quarter," Johnson said. "I hadn't been feeling that rhythm."

Johnson was initially expected to be out four to six weeks, but he returned less than three weeks after the procedure to remove loose cartilage in his shooting elbow.

"I still can't extend all the way," Johnson said, referring to his right arm. "But I can come out with a free mind."

Hawks coach Larry Drew said he was encouraged to see Johnson return to his familiar lead scoring role.

"I was very happy," Drew said. "I could see that he was getting into a rhythm. Joe is a rhythm guy. You could just see it."

The Hawks had a combined 15 points off the bench from Maurice Evans and Jeff Teague.

The Hawks led only 49-46 at halftime before pulling away with a 20-10 run to start the third quarter. The surge followed Drew's sharp reminders to play defense.

"At halftime I had to let them know my way," Drew said. "They came out in the third quarter and responded very well."

With a game-high 11 assists, Williams had his fourth straight double-double in points and assists. He said he is playing with a sore groin.

NOTES: Cleveland's last road win came was Nov. 9 at New Jersey. ... Hawks G Jamal Crawford missed his fifth straight game because of back spasms. He said he plans to join the Hawks on their trip to New Orleans and Milwaukee, but he still has obvious stiffness in his back. ... Cavaliers F Leon Powe (finger abrasion) was in uniform but did not play.

THE FACTS: The Hawks made their first nine shots in the second half Wednesday to create breathing room, and Joe Johnson scored 23 points in the best of his four games since returning from elbow surgery to lead the hosts to a 98-84 win over the Cavaliers. Cleveland fell for the 12th time in 13 games, and Atlanta won its eighth straight home game. Johnson made 9 of 17 shots, and fellow starters Al Horford (18 points), Marvin Williams (17) and Josh Smith (16) combined to make 23 of 38 shots (60.5 percent). Antawn Jamison led the Cavaliers with 23 points, but scored just one point over the final 15:22. Cleveland guard Daniel Gibson had 12 points after scoring a career-high 29 in Monday's loss to Utah. Mo Williams added 18 points and 11 assists for Cleveland.

THE STAT: Cleveland entered the game leading the NBA in bench points with 39.4 per game, but the Cavs' reserves mustered 48.2 percent of their average and scored just eight points in the second half. Atlanta's subs outrebounded Cleveland 12-7 while registering eight assists and two blocked shots to four assists and no blocks for the Cavs' subs.

TURNING POINT: Hawks reserve point guard Jeff Teague spearheaded Atlanta's rally from a 22-17 first quarter deficit by pushing a frenetic pace. While he played the first 5:03 of the second quarter, Atlanta outscored the Cavs 14-5 and he had three points, two assists, a rebound, a steal, and a blocked shot.

QUOTABLE II: "We have started to figure it out here at home. Now, we have to figure it out on the road."
-- Joe Johnson on Atlanta, who has won eight straight at home but is 8-7 on the road.

HOT: The Hawks have surrendered 85 or fewer points while winning three of their past four games (losing 89-82 Sunday at New Jersey in that stretch) ... Smith had his fourth straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds (and he added six assists) ... Mo Williams has registered double-digit assists in four straight games after dropping 11 dimes Wednesday. He's had 46 assists (11.5 against the Hawks) in that span.

GOOD MOVE: Drew's decision to have Johnson post up when Cleveland guards Mo Williams or Gibson -- both considerably smaller -- was defending him paid dividends. Drew also said he opted to call for post-ups out of Smith and Horford (combined for 20 second-half points) when they were defended in the second half by Jamison.

NOTABLE: The Hawks' ownership group, The Spirit, announced Wednesday that they had reached an agreement to buy out disgruntled soon-to-be-former partner Steve Belkin, concluding a lawsuit that was born in 2005 after Belkin was uphappy with the organization's decision to acquire Joe Johnson via trade. The Spirit also owns the NHL's Thrashers and Philips Arena, where the Hawks and Thrashers play their home games ... Jamal Crawford, who was the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year last season, missed his fifth straight game for the Hawks because of a sore back ... Marvin Williams moved back into the starting lineup Wednesday after coming off the bench Monday in the Hawks' win over the Magic. Center Jason Collins moved from the starting lineup back to a reserve role.
