Hornets-Pistons Preview

The New Orleans Hornets have won their last two games in very contrasting ways, first engineering a 23-point comeback and then cruising to a 29-point victory two days later.

Despite winning in different fashions, Marcus Thornton's performances looked awfully similar.

The previously seldom-used reserve has scored 19 points in back-to-back games, a spark the Hornets would love to see once again Sunday as they visit the Detroit Pistons.

New Orleans (16-10) found itself down by 23 points with eight minutes left in the third quarter Wednesday against visiting Sacramento, but that's when Thornton started to heat up. The second-year guard scored 17 of his 19 points the rest of the way, including the jumper that put the Hornets ahead for good with three minutes left in a 94-91 win.

Thornton kept scoring Friday against Utah, though this time every point wasn't nearly as critical. He had seven of his 19 in the second quarter to help New Orleans open up a 17-point halftime lead en route to a 100-71 blowout.

The league's seventh-highest scorer off the bench as a rookie last season, Thornton wasn't playing much earlier in the season largely because coach Monty Williams wasn't pleased with his defense.

He's now trying to change that perception in a hurry.

"I was just trying to get myself going. I let my defense speak for my offense," said Thornton, who had 21 games where he scored 20 or more as a rookie. "I get myself going on defense and it makes my offense a whole lot easier. There is always room for improvement. I'm not a bashful guy. Just get back tomorrow and hope to get better."

The Pistons (8-19) thought they were getting better after snapping a four-game slide with a 103-80 rout of Atlanta on Tuesday, but they took a few more steps backward Friday. The Los Angeles Clippers, who came in 0-11 on the road, thrashed Detroit 109-88.

"This one hits home," said forward Charlie Villanueva, who had team highs of 18 points and nine boards. "We know what was at stake. We know we laid an egg. We embarrassed ourselves out there. We all know that."

The performance looked awfully similar to the one Detroit delivered in New Orleans on Dec. 8. David West and Marco Belinelli combined for 47 points and Chris Paul had 14 assists as the Hornets cruised to a 93-74 victory.

West, who had a game-high 25, has made a habit of tormenting the Pistons. He's averaged 26.4 points as New Orleans has won four of the last five games in the series.

Detroit's starters scored 29 points Friday, a season low for a team that gets just 55.0 points per game from its starting five. The Pistons got 44 points from the starters in the loss to the Hornets, and are 0-11 when they fail to get 52 points or fewer from its opening unit.

New Orleans, meanwhile, has enjoyed its most success when it's getting something from Thornton and its bench. The Hornets are 11-3 when their reserves score at least 25 points.

Detroit's struggles getting production from its starters suggest coach John Kuester might want to insert Villanueva or Ben Gordon into the starting lineup, but either way he'll want to get Gordon plenty of minutes Sunday. Gordon has averaged 20.6 points in his career versus New Orleans while shooting 54.4 percent - easily his best mark against any opponent.

Gordon had 19 points in 28 minutes in the loss Dec. 8.

Banged-up Pistons edge Hornets 111-108 in OT

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) For one night, Will Bynum and the Detroit Pistons overcame all their problems.

Bynum's driving layup with 7.4 seconds left in overtime helped the injury-plagued Pistons to a 111-108 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday night. Trailing by 10 at halftime - and with several key players unavailable - Detroit rallied for its third win in 12 games and rebounded from Friday's 21-point home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"It was heart," Bynum said. "We want to win. We're not giving up (any) seconds out there on the court despite what the score says. Those are the kind of guys you want to live and die with - the guys that give it their all - and I thought that was the difference."

The Pistons were without guards Richard Hamilton (upset stomach) and Rodney Stuckey (toe). Tracy McGrady started for the second time all season but didn't play after halftime because of a sore groin.

Detroit was also without forward Austin Daye, who is recovering from a strained hamstring.

Bynum, on the other hand, was healthy, and he did a terrific job filling in for Stuckey. He finished with 21 points and nine assists, and his final basket made up for a couple of last-minute miscues that nearly cost Detroit the game.

With the Pistons ahead by three, Bynum's airball from the baseline helped New Orleans score on a fast break. Bynum then lost the ball near midcourt, allowing another fast break that led to David West's two free throws with 15.0 seconds remaining that put the Hornets ahead 108-107.

After a brief scramble, Bynum picked up the ball in the backcourt and went straight to the basket, getting a hard pick from Jason Maxiell along the way and scoring while drawing a foul.

"I thought tonight they had confidence in me and a few other players despite us struggling," Bynum said.

Bynum missed the free throw, and New Orleans called a timeout, but Maxiell tipped away the inbound pass, outfought West for the ball and dunked with 0.5 seconds remaining. The dunk actually gave New Orleans another chance, because the Hornets were able to advance the ball to midcourt following a timeout. But Trevor Ariza's last-ditch 3-pointer didn't come close.

"I watch a lot of games on TV, and had I watched this at home, I'd be wondering how they lost that game," Hornets guard Chris Paul said. "I'm still trying to figure out how we lost this game."

Ben Gordon forced overtime with a 3-pointer with 21.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 100. Paul patiently dribbled the seconds away at the other end, then drove to the baseline and attempted a floater that Tayshaun Prince blocked emphatically to end regulation.

Prince scored 28 points and Gordon added 25 for the Pistons. West scored 32 for the Hornets, and Paul added 23 with 10 assists.

"You've got to give our guys a lot of credit. They never gave up and guys were making plays," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "Very proud of this bunch that played today. It's amazing what happens when you do compete."

Banged up and ineffective for much of the season, the Pistons appeared headed to another defeat when New Orleans scored the last eight points of the second quarter to take a 51-41 halftime lead.

But Detroit answered with three straight 3-pointers to begin the third. Gordon, 0 of 7 from the field in the first half, made two shots from beyond the arc, and Charlie Villanueva added another.

Maxiell and forward DaJuan Summers didn't play at all in the first half for Detroit, but with the ranks thin, they ended up in the game together in the third quarter. Detroit trailed by three after Summers dunked off a pass from Maxiell, and although the Hornets built the lead back up to nine, a 3-pointer by Gordon to end the quarter made it 78-72.

The Pistons took the lead when Gordon's three-point play capped a 10-3 run to start the fourth.

"We gave up 59 points in the second half, and that doesn't count overtime," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "We just didn't guard the ball. We kept giving them open 3-point shots when that was all they could hit."

Notes: Detroit F Jonas Jerebko (partially ruptured right Achilles' tendon) was on the court taking flat-footed shots from just inside the free throw line before the game. ... Pistons C Ben Wallace played his 999th game. He shot an airball on a free throw in the third quarter. ... Detroit's NBA, NFL and NHL teams all went to overtime Sunday. The Red Wings, who are having by far the best season of the three, were the only one to lose.

THE FACTS: Reserve guard Will Bynum scored on a driving layup with 7.4 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Detroit Pistons to a 111-108 victory over the New Orleans Hornets Sunday at The Palace. Forward Tayshaun Prince had his first double-double this season with 28 points and 12 rebounds as the Pistons won for just the third time in 12 games. Forward David West led the Hornets with 32 points.

QUOTABLE: "I'm attacking. I'm not think about the last play. Of course, I was kind of down at the moment but once that play is over with, I'm looking forward to the next possession."
-- Bynum on scoring the game-winning basket after committing a turnover that led to two West free throws which gave New Orleans the lead.

THE STAT: 9-14. Pistons guard Ben Gordon went 0-for-7 in the first half but shot 9-for-14 after halftime, scoring 24 of his 25 points. Gordon played 44 minutes because Richard Hamilton (upset stomach) and Rodney Stuckey (sore toe) missed the game and Tracy McGrady (sore groin) sat out the second half.

TURNING POINT: New Orleans had both of its point guards, Chris Paul and Jarrett Jack, on the floor after Bynum's go-ahead basket. But neither touched the ball as Pistons center Jason Maxiell deflected Trevor Ariza's inbounds pass into the backcourt, then out-fought West for the ball and dunked with 0.5 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "Those guys never ever gave up. I sit at home and watch games every night and this is one of those games that if I was sitting at home and watching this game, I'd be like, 'Man, how did they lose?' And I'm still trying to figure out how we lost."

HOT: West could punch his ticket the All-Star game every season if he could play the Pistons more often. He has averaged 24.1 ppg in his last nine games against Detroit and 26.5 ppg in the last three seasons.

NOT: Hornets starting shooting guard Marco Belinelli recorded his fifth straight single-digit game, scoring six points in 29 minutes. Belineelli is averaging 7.6 ppg in that span while shooting 32.5 percent.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Tayshaun Prince shot 12-for-16 to boost his season field-goal percentage to 49.4, a career high. He also added a season-high eight assists. Prince is averaging 14.1 ppg, second only to Stuckey on a team that boosts scorers like Gordon, Hamilton and Charlie Villanueva.

GOOD MOVE: Pistons coach John Kuester didn't play Maxiell in the first half but inserted Maxiell in an effort to slow down West. Maxiell, who wound up playing 21 minutes, had two steals and forced West into a traveling violation in overtime.

BAD MOVE: Hornets center Emeka Okafor committed an offensive foul and a loose ball foul late in the fourth quarter to foul out of the game. That forced the Hornets to use backup Jason Smith, who didn't have a point or rebound in overtime.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kuester took Greg Monroe out of the starting lineup in favor of Villanueva. Monroe played sparingly in the second half and finished with four points and one rebound.

NOTABLE: The Pistons shot 53 percent from the field but just 56.5 percent from the foul line. ... Bynum's 21 points were a season high. ... Kuester planned to start Gordon even before Hamilton was declared out with an upset stomach. ... The Hornets are 5-10 after starting the season 11-1.
