It's not unusual for Stan Van Gundy to vent his frustrations about his team, and the coach had plenty after watching the Orlando Magic close a four-game road trip with another ugly loss.

It's considerably less common to hear the same critical words from Dwight Howard.

The four-time All-Star joined Van Gundy in taking the Magic to task for their defensive effort after the team's fifth loss in six games, a trend they'll look to change as they return home Saturday night looking for a ninth straight win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Orlando (16-9) had its six-game winning streak snapped Dec. 4 in Milwaukee, but that loss didn't turn out to be a blip in the radar. The Magic lost 80-74 at home to Atlanta two nights later, then dropped three of four during a Western road trip.

Each loss came by double figures, the worst of which was Tuesday's finale in Denver. The Nuggets outscored Orlando 32-16 in the fourth quarter, turning a one-point deficit after 36 minutes into a 111-94 rout.

For the trip, the Magic allowed 102.5 points per game - 11.7 more than they'd been letting up before hitting the road.

"It was lack of effort, lack of toughness, lack of any desire to defend anybody," Van Gundy said. "I thought all four games in the trip were the exact same. ... If that doesn't change then we're going to be a very bad basketball team.'"

The two-time defensive player of the year agreed.

"We just have to play D, and that means everybody," Howard said. "We have to do a better job of not allowing anyone to get to the rim every play. It is time for the big guys to help out in the lane, but it is very tough when after one dribble they get to lane and I am on the other side.

"I can't fly over there. I don't have a cape in real life."

Howard hasn't needed to do his best Superman impersonation against the 76ers (10-16) recently thanks to his team's offensive explosiveness. The Magic averaged 120.0 points while shooting 56.6 percent during four victories over Philadelphia last season that pushed their winning streak in the series to eight.

Six Orlando players averaged in double figures last season against the Sixers, led by Howard's 18.3 points per game.

The Magic acquired troubled guard Gilbert Arenas from Washington on Saturday in the first move of a major roster shakeup. Orlando sent forward Rashard Lewis to the Wizards for Arenas and also were finalizing a deal to land Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson from Phoenix for Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat.

Philadelphia won five of six during a home-heavy stretch to kick off December, but its last game of 2010 at the Wells Fargo Center rang a sour note heading into a season-high eight-game road trip. The 76ers led the Lakers by four at the end of three quarters, but were then outscored 35-19 en route to a 93-81 loss.

That wasn't enough to discourage coach Doug Collins, who was happy to see his team limit Los Angeles to 41.8 percent shooting.

"I told our guys I was incredibly proud of them," he said. "We played a terrific defensive game against one of the best offensive teams in the league."

Only once since the 1989-90 season has Philadelphia played eight straight on the road, but there's an arguably worse element involved than just the length of the trip. The Sixers' opponents are a combined 125-77.

One positive development for Philadelphia is the improvement of Spencer Hawes. The center, acquired from Sacramento in July, has averaged 17.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in his last three games.

Howard, however, averaged 26.3 points and 14.2 boards in six games while Hawes was with the Kings.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Orlando Magic had every excuse in the world to fall flat. Pick any one of them - they all fit fine for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lou Williams scored 24 points, Andre Iguodala had 21 and the Sixers beat the undermanned Magic 97-89 on Saturday night on a day Orlando made a pair of blockbuster trades that left them severely short-handed for a night.

"Any time you make a trade, it changes the psyche of your team," Sixers coach Doug Collins said.

Not that he was complaining about the timing.

Elton Brand finished with 20 points to help Philadelphia to a relatively easy victory with Orlando having only eight players available after two major trades. They acquired troubled guard Gilbert Arenas from the Washington Wizards, and Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson from the Phoenix Suns.

That left them with almost no help and no room for error against Philadelphia. The Magic managed to keep things close for a half until the Sixers pulled away with a strong defensive push and 31 points in the third quarter, handing Orlando its sixth loss in seven games.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy couldn't have cared less about the emotional toll of a trade-filled day.

"Make every excuse in the world," he said. "That's five straight games where we've done nothing to defend in the second half. So whatever the excuses are. I'm running out of them. I don't believe in any of them. Go out and guard somebody."

The game was the first of eight straight on the road for the Sixers. Their grueling trip will cover some 9,300 miles, and they won't play another game in Philadelphia until Jan. 5.

Orlando even gave them a send-off gift by putting up little resistance.

After having the minimum amount of players available at tip-off, the Magic played the second half with only seven when backup point guard Jason Williams injured his left foot and did not return. The fatigue finally overwhelmed them.

"It was tough. This was kind of like the first time something like that happened on my team," Orlando's Jameer Nelson said. "I just had to approach the game the same way."

It wasn't easy.

Dwight Howard had 26 points and 20 rebounds, and Brandon Bass had 18 points for the Magic. Orlando's recent struggles - coupled with the surge atop the Eastern Conference standings by Boston and rival Miami - forced the Magic to make the only moves they could to revamp their roster.

Orlando sent forward Rashard Lewis to Washington, and Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat to Phoenix in a separate trade. The Magic also gave Phoenix their 2011 first-round draft pick and cash, and received Suns forward Earl Clark.

Philadelphia never took it easy on them.

The Sixers took full advantage by wearing down the Magic on an emotional day that left them without some longtime teammates. Philadelphia went ahead by 15 points in the fourth quarter and never looked back.

"Defensively as a team, this is the best we've played as a unit," Brand said. "It feels like we're hitting on all cylinders defensively."

Notes: Arenas is expected to join the Magic on Sunday in Orlando. The others were set to join the Magic when they play at Atlanta on Monday night. The Magic decided to take Sunday off because they wouldn't have enough players available for practice, with all involved in the trade needing to pass physicals first. ... Sixers G Evan Turner, the No. 2 overall draft pick, came off the bench after not playing at all Friday against the Lakers. He has two points on 1 of 5 shooting.

THE FACTS: Lou Williams scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 97-89 victory over the Orlando Magic on the same day the Magic made two major trades. It was the first victory in Orlando since Nov. 6, 2006, for the 76ers, who were opening an eight-game road trip. They had lost eight straight to the Magic. Andre Iguodala scored 21 points for the 76ers and Elton Brand added 20 to offset Dwight Howard's 26 points and 20 rebounds for Orlando.

QUOTABLE: "The key down the stretch was limiting their 3-point opportunities. We were up so much so the twos didn't hurt us as much. We guarded that 3-point line as well as we have all season."

THE STAT: Williams, who played 30 minutes off the bench, outscored Orlando's depleted bench by himself, 24-13.

TURNING POINT: The 76ers led by only five points when Marreese Speights converted a three-point play with 10:15 left, launching a 7-0 run that put Philadelphia's lead into double figures until the final seconds.

QUOTABLE II: "It was very emotional when you wake and see guys that you called brothers are gone. We all understand it's a business but it hurts to see guys like Rashard (Lewis traded) . . . we were close and I hated to see him leave the team."

GOOD MOVE: After picking up two early fouls, 7-foot, 245-pound center Spencer Hawes was kept on the bench until the second half because the 76ers needed him to neutralize Howard late in the game.

BAD MOVE: The long-term consequence of Orlando's trades are not known, but they left the Magic with only eight players Saturday night. And then Jason Williams left the game early with a sore left foot.

QUOTABLE III: "It's not new guys, old guys; we're not two teams, we are one team. Everybody is going to have to start playing."

ROOKIE WATCH: After not playing (for the first time all season) against the Lakers on Friday night, the 76ers' Evan Turner played nine minutes, making 1-of-5 shots and grabbing three rebounds.

NOTABLE: The 76ers have won 8 of 11 after a 3-13 start . . . The Magic have lost six of their last seven games, and next week's opponents are against Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio and Boston . . . It was the 27th 20/20 game of Howard's career but his first in more than a year.
