Grizzlies-Spurs Preview

After a left ankle injury hampered Manu Ginobili during the 2008 postseason and a fractured right ankle sidelined him during the following year's playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs were admittedly a bit hesitant before signing the veteran guard to an extension last spring.

So far, it's proven to be a wise investment.

Ginobili and the NBA-best Spurs go for their eighth win in a row overall and seventh straight at AT&T Center on Saturday night when they face the Memphis Grizzlies, who stumbled to open their two-game Texas trip.

With his contract ending following the 2009-10 season, Ginobili proved that the injuries that limited him to 44 games in 2008-09 would not prevent him from playing a major role in the Spurs' future. During an 11-game stretch prior to signing a three-year, $39 million extension on April 9, Ginobili averaged 25.7 points and 6.1 assists and was one of the main reasons why San Antonio reached its 13th consecutive postseason.

"It's always good to have information that helps leads you to make decisions," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said after the deal was finalized.

Buford seems to have made the right decision. Ginobili leads San Antonio (22-3) with a career-high 20.0 points per game, but more importantly, continues to deliver with the game on the line.

After hitting a buzzer-beating jumper Wednesday to give the Spurs a 92-90 victory over Milwaukee, the 33-year-old Argentina native made a go-ahead runner with 4.2 seconds remaining before taking a charge from Carmelo Anthony as time expired in Thursday's 113-112 win in Denver.

"He's a stud," coach Gregg Popovich said of Ginobili. "He's been a competitor, he's won championships here and overseas and he's been MVPs of things. He scored the two free throws down the stretch, then he scored the winning bucket and then he took the charge. That pretty much says it all about what he's capable of doing."

Hours after signing his deal last season, Ginobili scored a team-high 26 points but the Spurs lost 107-99 to end their 10-game home winning streak against Memphis.

The Grizzlies (12-15) would like a similar result as they make the first of two visits to AT&T Center in 2010-11. Memphis, though, is coming off one of its worst performances of the season, scoring 33 first-half points in Friday's 103-87 loss to Houston.

"We came in here to try to make a statement that we could play with them, but they showed us that we haven't matured enough and gotten on the level that they're on with their group," coach Lionel Hollins said.

That immaturity cost the Grizzlies with leading scorer Rudy Gay suspended for this game for knocking down Rockets forward Luis Scola in the fourth quarter and getting ejected for a flagrant-2 foul.

"I kind of let my anger get the best of me, and it's not characteristic of me or anybody else on this team," Gay said. "Me, as a leader, I probably shouldn't have done that."

The loss of Gay, who is averaging a team-high 21.0 points, could be too much for Memphis to overcome as it faces a Spurs team holding opponents to 93.0 points and 43.6-percent shooting from the field during its seven-game win streak.

San Antonio is 23-6 all-time at home against the Grizzlies.

Parker's 37 powers Spurs to 8th straight win

SAN ANTONIO (AP) A third consecutive San Antonio Spurs game was coming down to the final seconds, and Manu Ginobili had the ball in his hands again. This time, he wasn't the hero.

It was Tony Parker's turn.

Parker scored 37 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter and overtime, and the Spurs pulled off another dramatic win for their eighth straight victory, 112-106 over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

"As long as we're winning," Parker of another nailbiter, "I'm OK with it."

There was no Ginobili clincher this time. Coming off beating Milwaukee on a 17-footer at the buzzer, followed by hitting a twisting game-winner Thursday at Denver, Ginobili muddled through an off night and passed up the final shot in regulation on a pick-and-roll with Tim Duncan.

Duncan charged toward the basket but flipped the ball to Richard Jefferson after being met by Zach Randolph. It was an open look for Jefferson, but his 14-footer didn't even reach the rim.

That left it up to Parker in overtime. He made both his shots in the extra period, including an 8-footer with 1:01 left that pushed the lead to six and sapped the Grizzlies.

Parker wouldn't have minded a crack at the final shot in the fourth, too.

"Definitely. I was ready," Parker said. "I was ready, but I thought (Ginobili) made a great pass to Timmy. I thought Timmy was open, but he passed it to Richard and everybody was being unselfish. Richard had a good look, but it didn't go in."

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins called a timeout after Parker's final shot in overtime, exasperated.

"What can you tell them?" Hollins said of Parker. "The guy's running down the court 900 miles an hour and spinning and all that stuff. What am I supposed to tell them? Stop him from spinning? If we had executed better offensively, maybe he wouldn't have had some of the transition baskets."

Zach Randolph had 24 points and 21 rebounds for Memphis. The Grizzlies played without leading scorer Rudy Gay, who was serving a one-game suspension following his ejection Friday night in a loss at Houston.

O.J. Mayo led Memphis with 27 points and hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 21 seconds left that forced the Spurs into overtime.

"We should've won the game as we played so well," Mayo said. "Now it was all for no reason."

Parker was 15 for 21 from the field and had nine assists. He put up a season high while scoring nine of San Antonio's final 10 points in regulation, including just his fifth 3-pointer of the season.

Duncan had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Grizzlies left Texas with back-to-back losses after they arrived winners of four straight.

Mayo, returning to the starting lineup with Gay out, scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Marc Gasol added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Randolph collected his third 20-20 game of the season, joining Minnesota's Kevin Love as the only two players with multiple 20-20 games.

The Spurs pushed their NBA-best record to 23-3, and are off to the best start in the NBA through 26 games since Boston went 24-2 to begin the 2008-09 season.

The Grizzlies hung with the Spurs despite missing Gay, who was ejected in Houston after sprinting down court midway through the fourth quarter to shove Luis Scola in the back, knocking him to the ground. The two had been tangled up on the other end of the court moments earlier.

Hollins was disappointed with Gay losing his cool and leaving Memphis short-handed, but Memphis had enough to nearly pull off the upset. The Spurs made eight of their first 11 shots and led by as much as 11 before the Grizzlies clawed back in the fourth quarter.

Tony Allen scored 15 points for Memphis in his first start of the season.

Notes: Spurs G George Hill did not play because of a sprained right big toe. He hurt it earlier this week in a victory over Portland. ... Duncan surpassed 21,000 points for his career. ...The Grizzlies fell to 4-10 with Mayo in the starting lineup. They had been 8-6 since making him a reserve and giving Memphis a spark off the bench.

THE FACTS: Tony Parker scored a season-high for the second consecutive game with 37 points and nine assists to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 112-106 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night at AT&T Center. The Spurs (23-3) remain the league-best in won-lost record yet have won their last three games by margins of two points, one point and the six-point win tonight coming in overtime. Memphis (12-16) was playing without Rudy Gay, who served a one-game suspension for his flagrant foul 2 last night in Houston.

QUOTABLE: "I thought we did a great job of hanging in there on a night when, mentally, I thought we were very subpar. I thought it was a sloppy game on our part. Sometimes you have games like that, and we'll certainly take it."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies outrebounded San Antonio 48-41 and led 18-5 in second chance points. But the Spurs again shot well enough to win -- 51.2 percent from the floor. It's the third-straight game the Spurs have bettered 51 percent from the field while holding their opponents to less than 50 percent in each of those games.

TURNING POINT: After blowing a lob that would have capped a 3-on-1 fastbreak and given the Spurs a five-point lead with a minute left in regulation, then missing what would have been the game-winning shot from 14 feet, Richard Jefferson got loose on a layup that gave San Antonio a 108-103 lead with two minutes left in overtime. It was started by Tim Duncan, who blocked Mike Conley's drive to the hoop. Duncan ended with three blocked shots and has averaged 4.6 blocks over the last three games.

QUOTABLE II: "We should have won the game. We played so well. Now, it was all for no reason. The Spurs are the No. 1 team in the league now, but we still had a chance to win the game."

HOT: Parker had his season-best game because he shot 15-of-21 from the floor. He hit both of his shots in overtime. He's shooting 51 percent this season, which is his best since the 2006-07 season when he was MVP in the NBA Finals sweep over Cleveland.

NOT: Marc Gasol finished 3-of-11. He's 8-of-38 over the last four games (21 percent).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: After turning in one of his worst performances of the season last night when he went 4-of-13 for 13 points and nine rebounds in Houston, Zach Randolph scored 24 points and had 21 rebounds. He had a double-double looking only at offensive rebounds -- 10 -- and he had a 20-20 night at the end of regulation. He has three 20-20 games this season, and the Grizzlies had won both of the others.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The M-V-P chants have started for Manu Ginobili. The first time they were audible came early in the second half when Ginobili stepped to the free-throw line. He promptly missed and the chants weren't heard until late in overtime.

GOOD MOVE: Spurs veteran reserve Antonio McDyess has been able to take a few games off this season as the Spurs have managed their record start. The oldest player on the Spurs roster -- McDyess is 36 -- looked like he was going to get another break with the Spurs ahead by as much as 11 points in the first half. But when Memphis trimmed it to a one-point game midway through the third, McDyess came off the bench. Though his stats weren't eye-catching, he did seem to get the team settled. He played all five minutes of overtime and made the Spurs first shot of the extra period.

BAD MOVE: That actually came last night when Gay ran down the court and did his best to get retribution on the Rockets' Luis Scola, who appeared to get an elbow in the face of Gay on the prior possession. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins went out of his way before the game to mention that Gay's loss of composure was going to make it tough on his team.

ROOKIE WATCH: With George Hill in street clothes on the Spurs bench because of his right big toe sprain, Gary Neal was productive while playing his second-most minutes this season. He had 11 points off 4-of-10 shooting (2-of-6 from the 3-point line) and had five rebounds. Xavier Henry had a streak of 14 consecutive starts come to an end for the Grizzlies. Combined with Greivis Vazquez, the Memphis rookies went 1-of-6 for three points.

NOTABLE: O.J. Mayo was in the starting lineup for the first time in 14 games. Prior to the game, Mayo's last start was Nov. 19 (Memphis is 8-6 with him on the bench, 4-10 with him starting). He scored 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting and hit a tough 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to send the game into overtime (he was 5-of-8 from the 3-point line). Tony Allen (5-of-9, 15 points) got his first start of the season. The Spurs are 3-0 in overtime games this season, Memphis 1-3. The Grizzlies have one more game before Christmas, the Spurs three. Rarely used Chris Quinn (he hasn't played more than four minutes for San Antonio since a 29-point, garbage-time blowout of New Orleans on Dec. 5) played 6 1/2 minutes in the second quarter and made the most of it with super-sub Hill on the bench with a right big toe sprain. He went 3-of-4 with a pair of 3-pointers during that stretch.
