Clippers-Bulls Preview

Despite injuries to some key players, the Chicago Bulls have managed to build a decent lead in the Central Division.

Looking to extend their season-high winning streak to eight games, the Bulls play their first of many without Joakim Noah on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Clippers in former Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro's return to the United Center.

Chicago (16-8) went 9-6 while prized free agent Carlos Boozer missed the first month with a broken hand. The Bulls, who are 7-2 with Boozer and own a 4 1/2-game lead in the Central, also have played well while All-Star Derrick Rose deals with wrist, elbow and hip injuries.

Now, they must find a way to win without Noah, who is averaging career highs in points (14.0) and rebounds (11.7), but will miss eight to 10 weeks after he underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right hand.

"It's a blow," general manager Gar Forman said. "Carlos was just getting back into the mix and they were getting used to playing together. We'll get that back."

Second-year forward Taj Gibson and veteran Kurt Thomas are expected to help fill the void left by Noah.

"We're confident in the abilities of the guys that we have," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We've got more than enough to win with. We have a number of players who can step up."

Even without Noah, the Bulls might be in good shape to win eight in a row for the first time since a nine-game run March 19-April 2, 2005. Opponents have averaged 88.7 points during Chicago's winning streak.

Facing Del Negro for the first time since he was fired in May could give the Bulls extra motivation.

The Bulls finished 41-41 and lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of Del Negro's two seasons. The coach fell out of favor with some players and received little support from the front office during his tenure in Chicago. Notably, Del Negro and team president John Paxson had a postgame physical altercation on March 30 involving dispute over Noah's playing time.

Del Negro, however, expresses no regrets.

"I'm very proud of the job that my staff and myself did in Chicago for two years," he said.

Though Los Angeles (6-21) has one of the worst records in the NBA, it could be confident after winning both games against the Bulls last season. Eric Gordon scored 24 points in the Clippers' 90-82 victory at the United Center in the teams' most recent meeting Feb. 2.

The Clippers should arrive with some momentum after they snapped a 15-game road skid with a 109-88 win at Detroit on Friday.

"This was important," said Blake Griffin, who had 24 points and 17 rebounds. "The first time you do something like this, now it is like you know how to do it, and know what it feels like. This gives us something to build on."

The No. 1 overall pick from the 2009 draft who missed all of last season with a knee injury, Griffin has averaged 24.0 points and 13.9 rebounds while recording a double-double in 14 consecutive games.

Boozer, who had a season-high 34 points and added 12 boards in Chicago's 110-93 win at Toronto on Wednesday, has averaged 22.8 points and 11.9 rebounds in his last nine games against the Clippers.

Road Warriors: Clippers top Bulls for 2nd straight

CHICAGO (AP) Derrick Rose was confident he'd make both free throws with 0.8 seconds left. His former coach, Vinny Del Negro, thought so, too.

Rose hit the first Saturday night to bring the Chicago Bulls within a point. But he misfired on the second, the horn sounded and Del Negro had a triumphant return to the United Center as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Bulls 100-99.

"You never want to see that. Derrick is a tough kid. He's made so many and he'll make so many more in his career - free throws, big shots," Del Negro said "The game should have never come down to that."

Blake Griffin had 29 points and 12 rebounds for his 15th straight double-double to lead the Clippers, who stopped Chicago's seven-game winning streak. Before winning a pair of road games the past two nights, Los Angeles had lost 15 consecutive games away from home, including its first 11 this season.

The Clippers had an eight-point lead with 1:08 left after a pair of driving baskets by Baron Davis. But Rose brought the Bulls back with a three-point play and then a feed to Carlos Boozer for a layup that cut it to two.

After a miss by the Clippers, Rose took the ball to the basket between two Clippers and was fouled by Rasual Butler just as the buzzer sounded. Officials checked a replay to make sure he was fouled before time expired.

He then went to the line, made the first and missed the second.

"I thought I was going to hit them. That's basketball. I hope I get put in that position again. I know I'm not going to miss it," said Rose, who led all scorers with 34 points. "It felt good, but I left it a bit short."

Del Negro was fired as Bulls coach last May after going 82-82 in two seasons and having two first-round playoff exits. His tenure also included an altercation with Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson.

Coming back and winning was satisfying.

"Obviously, this one is a little bit more special since it's in Chicago," said Del Negro, greeted with a few boos when introduced. He told his team after the game it was a great present.

Before the game, as he was engulfed by cameras and recorders, Del Negro said he enjoyed his two seasons with the Bulls.

"I'm very proud of what we accomplished," he said. "The team is in a much better position now after the two years I was here. ... I've moved on. They've moved on."

Now, Del Negro is running a team that got off to a horrendous start but has shown promise. After losing their first 11 away from home, the Clippers posted their first road victory Friday night in Detroit and then carried that momentum into Chicago.

"We're definitely improving, that's evident," Griffin said. "I was just being aggressive. Thankfully I hit some shots early and it got me going."

It was also the Bulls' first game since starting center Joakim Noah underwent surgery on his thumb earlier in the week, a ligament injury that will sideline him for eight to 10 weeks. Chicago missed his defense more than his 14 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.

Noah's replacement, Taj Gibson, left the game in the third quarter with a concussion. He finished with three points and two rebounds. And the Bulls just couldn't defend Griffin. Veteran big man Kurt Thomas tried and fouled out in 16 minutes.

"You're definitely going to miss somebody like Joe, but there's no excuses," Rose said.

The Bulls ran off the first six points of the third to cut the lead to two, but a 16-6 Clippers run featuring two slams by Griffin and Eric Gordon's 3-pointer boosted it to 12. Los Angeles led by seven entering the final quarter.

Notes: Clippers F Brian Cook missed the game after spraining his right ankle in the final minute of Friday night's win.

THE FACTS: After getting their first road win of the season Friday at Detroit, the Los Angeles Clippers held on to beat the Bulls at the United Center 100-99 Saturday. With less than one second left, Bulls guard Derrick Rose missed the second of two free throws that would have sent the game into overtime. Clippers forward Blake Griffin scored 29 points against the Bulls, who had their seven-game winning streak halted. Rose had 34 points and Carlos Boozer had 25 for the Bulls.

THE FACTS II: The loss was the first of the year for the Bulls against a team with a losing record. It was also their first game without center Joakim Noah, who will miss eight to 10 weeks after having surgery on his right thumb.

QUOTABLE: "I like the matchup of Blake against anybody.''

THE STAT: The Bulls were 9-6 without Boozer at the start of the season as he worked his way back from a broken hand. They were 7-2 with their full lineup intact before Noah underwent surgery.

TURNING POINT: As the Bulls were mounting a comeback late, Clippers guard Baron Davis scored twice on drives to the basket, stretching a 95-91 Clippers lead to 99-91 with 1:08 left.

THE MOMENT: Rose, who entered the game as a 76 percent free throw shooter, was 7-for-8from the line before hitting the front of the rim on what would have been a game-tying shot.

HOT: Griffin was 10-for-18 from the field and added a game-high 12 rebounds.

NOT: Bulls outside threat Kyle Korver was 1-for-5 from the field on a night the Bulls needed him for their comeback effort.
