Cavaliers-Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers are 2-6 this month and have suffered three consecutive double-digit defeats. While that slump has been rough, it's far better than what the Cleveland Cavaliers have endured.

The Cavs will be trying to avoid their 10th straight loss and 11th in a row on the road when they face the Pacers on Friday night.

Cleveland (7-18) is 0-8 in December, losing six of those contests by double figures and getting outscored by 18.5 points over the nine-game skid. The team managed to stay competitive against former Cavs star LeBron James and Miami on Wednesday, but fell 101-95 despite pulling within three with 1:33 left.

Cleveland's Daniel Gibson had a season-high 26 points and Anderson Varejao added 18 points and 15 rebounds.

"I couldn't ask for them to play any harder than they played," coach Byron Scott said. "I thought they were terrific effort-wise. They competed for 48 minutes."

Facing the struggling Pacers would appear to give Cleveland a good chance to avoid adding to its longest skid since it dropped 15 in a row from Nov. 6-Dec. 2, 2002. The Cavs last lost 11 straight on the road Jan. 28-March 26, 2005.

The Cavaliers, however, have lost their two meetings with Indiana this season by an average of 12.5 points, scoring 87.0 points on 40.4 percent shooting in those contests.

In the most recent matchup Nov. 23 at Indianapolis, Cleveland trailed by 27 after three quarters and lost 100-89. The Cavs outscored the Pacers 33-17 in the final 12 minutes, but that was after Indiana outscored them 38-21 in the second period.

Danny Granger led Indiana with 24 points and has averaged 31.3 during the Pacers' three consecutive wins in the series. He scored 34 in a 99-85 victory at Cleveland on Nov. 13.

Granger, though, has shot 34.4 percent over the last four games and hasn't scored more than 18 points in his last three. The forward, averaging 20.7 points, had 13 in his return from a sprained ankle Wednesday after missing one game.

The Pacers fell 109-94 at home Wednesday to the Los Angeles Lakers, who were never seriously threatened after building a 22-point halftime lead.

"I'm not very happy with the way we competed, in all candor," coach Jim O'Brien said. "You've got to bring a certain ethic to the game and frankly, we haven't."

The Pacers have scored 83.3 points per game during their season-high three straight defeats, which have come by an average of 16.0 points. Indiana is averaging 98.3 points on the season and 103.4 at home.

Danny Granger leads Pacers past Cavaliers 108-99

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Danny Granger broke out of his slump and helped extend Cleveland's slide.

The Indiana forward had 30 points and a season-high 12 rebounds to help the Pacers beat the Cavaliers 108-99 on Friday night, pushing Cleveland's losing streak to 10 games.

Granger had shot a combined 8 for 27 in losses to Atlanta and the Los Angeles Lakers, and he didn't play in the loss to Chicago in between because of a sprained ankle. He bounced back to make 12 of 22 shots against the Cavaliers, including four of seven 3-pointers, to help the Pacers snap a three-game skid.

"I went through a stretch when I wasn't being very aggressive or assertive offensively," Granger said. "I made a point to just go out and try to be an assassin. That philosophy works better for me. Other games I've been coasting. I have to be aggressive."

It was Granger's fifth game with 30 or more points this season, and his first since he scored a season-high 37 against Sacramento on Nov. 30.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers remained in a rut. Humiliating home losses of 19 points to Boston and 28 points to Miami in LeBron James' return to Cleveland started the downward spiral.

"We just have to get a win," forward Antawn Jamison said. "We're doing a good job of 36-40 minutes of pretty good basketball. There are no consolation prizes in the NBA."

Cleveland's average margin of defeat during the streak is 17.5 points, but the past two losses, including a six-point defeat at Miami on Wednesday, have been by single digits. At this point, the final score doesn't seem to be coach Byron Scott's primary concern.

"The silver lining is us playing two straight games very hard," he said. "It's something to build on and stay together as a basketball team."

Indiana got back on track, showing signs of a turnaround this season after a four-year absence from the playoffs. Roy Hibbert, Mike Dunleavy and Brandon Rush each scored 15 points for the Pacers.

"I thought we played better for 48 minutes," Dunleavy said. "That's the only way we can win basketball games. We came out focused and willing to help each other out, and we played well enough tonight to get the win."

Mo Williams had 22 points and 11 assists for the Cavaliers. Anthony Parker and Antawn Jamison each scored 17 points and Anderson Varejao added 15 for the Cavaliers.

The chippy game included five technical fouls and an ejection in the fourth quarter. There were seven total technicals in the game.

Indiana outrebounded the Cavaliers 49-38 and held them to 41.5 percent shooting.

Cleveland led 48-47 until Dunleavy made a 3-pointer with 32.9 seconds left in the first half. James Posey hit a 3 just 1.2 seconds before halftime to push Indiana's lead to 53-48 at the break. The Pacers shot 57 percent in the second quarter.

A powerful, one-handed jam by Josh McRoberts gave Indiana a 58-52 lead. A 3-pointer by Granger pushed it to 67-56, and the Pacers led 84-74 at the end of the third quarter.

The Pacers seized momentum early in the fourth. T.J. Ford faked a pass while in the air, then kept the ball and converted a layup. On Indiana's next possession, Ford found an open Rush, who drained a 3-pointer to give Indiana a 94-79 lead that prompted Cleveland to call timeout.

The Pacers hope to take another step toward legitimizing their turnaround when they play at Boston on Sunday. Indiana already has road wins against Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Pacers thought they needed to beat Cleveland to hit the road in the proper frame of mind.

"You have to beat the teams you're supposed to beat," Granger said. "It wasn't necessarily pretty, but a win is a win, and it gives us momentum going to Boston."

NOTES: The two games between the LeBron James-led Cavaliers and Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse last season sold out with 18,165 fans. Without James, attendance at this year's first game in Indianapolis on Nov. 23 was 12,629. Attendance on Friday was 12,021. ... Pacers F Tyler Hansbrough did not play. THE FACTS: Danny Granger scored 30 points with 12 rebounds and the Indiana Pacers got a needed victory in convincing fashion, pulling away from the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers for a 108-99 victory at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Friday.

Granger, after scoring just 13 points in a Wednesday home loss to the Lakers and 14 in a recent loss to Atlanta, shot 12-for-22 from the field for Indiana, which had lost three consecutive games.

Roy Hibbert, Brandon Rush and Mike Dunleavy each added 15 points for Indiana, which took a five-point halftime lead and maintained a comfortable edge throughout the second half.

Mo Williams had 22 points to lead the Cavaliers, who lost their 10th consecutive game.

QUOTABLE: "We'll take it. Cleveland has had some issues. They're struggling a little bit with a losing streak, but we'll take the win. This team just came back from Miami and played those guys well. We were up for the challenge. We obviously played well enough to win."

THE STAT: The Pacers had been dramatically outrebounded during a recent three-game losing streak, and turning that statistic around was key Friday. The Pacers outrebounded the Cavaliers 48-39 and held a slight advantage in every quarter. In a three-game losing streak, they had been out-rebounded 147-06 -- 48-36 by the Hawks, 48-41 by the Bulls and 51-29 by the Lakers.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers were never really out of control, but after leading by five points at halftime, they pushed a four-point lead to 69-56 with a 13-4 run. Josh McRoberts started the run with a fast-break dunk and Granger had a 3-point field goal to give Indiana its first double-digit lead.

HOT: Granger didn't have his best game in a loss to the Lakers Wednesday, but he was back to being a front-line scoring threat Friday. He started the game hot, and his 7-for-13 shooting for 15 points helped the Pacers push to a 53-48 halftime lead. He had 20 points by the end of the third quarter, and stayed consistent throughout the game.

NOT: Neither team was particularly cold at any point, but with the Cavaliers short-handed with injuries they couldn't afford off nights from two of their players. Starting guard Daniel Gibson shot 1-for-7 from the field and finished with four points and reserve Ramon Sessions missed 5-for-7 shots from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dunleavy missed much of the last two seasons with injuries, and his continued health and presence in the lineup has helped the Pacers stay competitive throughout much of the early part of the season. He scored 15 points Friday, and while he shot just 4-for-12, he made 2-for-3 3-point field goals. There has been speculation that because Dunleavy is in the final year of his contract he may not be part of the Pacers' core moving forward, but coach Jim O'Brien said he hopes that's not the case. "Mike has had a really, really strong year," O'Brien said. "I wouldn't want to have the opportunity to have Mike and not have have him our team."

GOOD MOVE: Granger said he played a bit too passively and coasted at times in his last two games. He said he wanted to be more aggressive on Friday, and the result was his biggest scoring game since scoring 37 against Sacramento on November 30. "I made a point to go out and try to be an assassin," Granger said. "That philosophy worked better for me."

BAD MOVE: Can't really fault Cavaliers coach Byron Scott for the approach, but injuries have forced a lack of depth that on Friday forced Cleveland to play with a short bench. Only eight players played extensively, and the Pacers rotated players throughout the final half to pull steadily away.

NOTABLE: Cavaliers forward Leon Powe missed the game after tearing some skin off of his middle finger in practice Thursday, Scott said. Forward Joey Graham also will missed with a right quad strain, further reducing an already tight rotation for the Cavaliers. . . . The Cavaliers finished with three second-chance points, the fewest by a Pacers opponent this season. . . . Hibbert blocked a season-high six shots for Indiana.
