Putting his name in elite company hasn't quite gone as planned for Denver Nuggets coach George Karl. It won't be any easier to do if Carmelo Anthony is unavailable again.

Karl will attempt to record win No. 1,000 for the third time while the Nuggets look for their seventh consecutive victory over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night at Air Canada Centre.

Anthony was scratched before Wednesday night's 105-89 loss at Boston with inflammation in his right knee and is considered day-to-day.

"I'm somewhat surprised by it," said Karl, fourth among active coaches in wins. "I kind of knew there was a chance he wouldn't go (at) about 15 minutes before the game."

Anthony, averaging a team-high 22.8 points, missed a game for the first time this season. He has been struggling, shooting 30.6 percent from the field in four games this month.

Anthony's last game was Karl's first chance to reach the milestone, but Denver lost 100-98 in Charlotte on Tuesday to have a seven-game win streak snapped.

With Karl trying to join Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Pat Riley, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson and Larry Brown as the only coaches with 1,000 wins, the Nuggets (13-9) have lost consecutive games for only the second time this season.

Missing its leading scorer Wednesday, Denver trailed by 14 at the end of the first quarter and was held to its second-lowest point total of the season, including 37 in the second half.

The Nuggets are averaging 98.0 points on the road compared to an NBA-best 111.4 at home. They're 0-6 as the visiting team when scoring below 100 points.

Chauncey Billups' struggles continued Wednesday, going 2 of 10 from the field and finishing with a season-low five points. Billups has shot 31.6 percent over the past four games but could bounce back in Toronto, where he's averaged 21.1 points on 50.5 percent shooting in his last eight visits.

Nene has scored 20.0 per game in his last four matchups with Toronto while hitting 69.6 percent from the field.

The Raptors (8-14) will look to end a three-game slide after falling 113-110 in New York on Wednesday night despite 41 points from Andrea Bargnani.

Bargnani, whose previous career high was 34, went 16 of 24 from the field. He was 2 for 3 from 3-point range after going 1 for 18 in his previous six games, averaging 16.2 points.

Toronto lost Wednesday on a late 3-pointer, but that result against a hot Knicks team provided some optimism after the Raptors had dropped their previous two games by an average of 20.5 points.

"The most important thing right now is that we did a great job and we fought through until the end of the game," guard Leandro Barbosa said. "We're getting better. The effort that we put in tonight was great and I think that's the way that we're supposed to play every night and try to get a victory."

Linas Kleiza, who spent his first four years in the league with Denver, will face his former team for the first time. Kleiza is averaging 9.6 points.

Toronto has been outscored by 17.6 points during its six-game losing streak against Denver.

Peja Stojakovic missed his sixth straight game as he continues to deal with a swollen left knee. His status for Friday is unknown.

Karl earns 1,000th win as Nuggets beat Raptors

TORONTO (AP) George Karl found peace and contentment in recording a coaching milestone.

Karl earned his 1,000th coaching victory, as Al Harrington scored a season-high 31 points and Nene added 26 to help the Denver Nuggets hold off the Toronto Raptors 123-116 on Friday night.

The seventh coach in NBA history with 1,000 wins, Karl also notched his 900th in Toronto, a 114-107 victory on Dec. 31, 2008. He shook hands with spectators as fans next to the Nuggets' bench bowed to him in the final seconds of the game. He was hugged by Denver's players and assistant coaches at the final buzzer.

After doing radio and television interviews on the court, Karl shared a moment of "peacefulness and contentment" with his team inside the locker room.

"I just felt together with them, I felt connected with them," Karl said. "A lot of times during an NBA season, the coach and players aren't really connected, they're fighting a lot. This was a moment, not only on the court but in the locker room afterwards, there was a great connection."

Chauncey Billups called it "a moment that you'll never forget."

"He's one of the best coaches I've played for," Billups said. "He's all about winning, he's all about playing the right way and sharing the basketball and everybody having their opportunities out there. I believe that's the way you win basketball games. Obviously, with 1,000 wins, he knows what he's doing."

Karl survived prostate cancer in 2005 and was treated for neck and throat cancer earlier this year, missing the end of last season while undergoing treatment.

"It's unbelievable," Billups said. "He's got 1,000 wins and he beat cancer twice. Those are his biggest wins."

Billups scored 21 points and Gary Forbes had 15 in place of the injured Carmelo Anthony as the Nuggets snapped a two-game losing streak. J.R. Smith scored 11 points for Denver.

Former Nugget Linas Kleiza set season highs with 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Leandro Barbosa matched his season high with 22 points, but Toronto lost its fourth straight. The Raptors have dropped six of eight.

"Our forwards couldn't stay with Harrington at all," Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "He just drove past them."

Andrea Bargnani scored 24 and Sonny Weems had 21.

Anthony missed his second straight game because of a sore right knee, with Forbes starting in his place. Anthony, the 10th-leading scorer in the NBA at 22.8 points per game, also sat out Wednesday's loss at Boston, the only other game he's missed this season.

"Without Melo, if you'd told me we were going to get 123, I would have taken that," Karl said. "It's kind of shocking that we scored that many points."

Trailing by 12 points to begin the final quarter, Toronto cut it to 111-104 on a 3-pointer by Weems with 4:28 to play. Smith answered with a 3 for Denver, restoring the 10-point lead.

After Bargnani hit a jumper and Nene made two at the line, Kleiza cut it 116-109 by making a 3-pointer with 2:18 left. After a timeout, Harrington drove for a layup but landed awkwardly and injured his left ankle. He stayed in the game.

Toronto wasn't done, and a 3-pointer by Bargnani made it 120-116 with 46 seconds to go. But after a missed shot by Billups, Weems lost the ball out of bounds, giving possession back to Denver.

"I don't get worried until it's under four," Karl said. "That's my credo. Four or above, we're OK. When they had a shot and they fumbled it out of bounds, I was a little worried there."

Billups sealed it by making three of four free throws in the closing seconds.

Billups scored 15 points in the first, going 8 for 8 at the line, as Denver led 39-33 after one quarter.

Kleiza scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second quarter, but Harrington replied with 16 points and five rebounds as Denver widened its lead, holding a 74-65 edge at the half.

Forbes scored 13 points in the third as the Nuggets led by as many as 19 before Toronto ended the quarter on a 6-0, cutting the deficit to 98-86 heading into the fourth.

The teams combined for 22 3-pointers, including 12 by the Nuggets.

THE FACTS: The Denver Nuggets gave head coach George Karl his 1,000th career victory with a 123-116 win over the Toronto Raptors. Led by Al Harrington's season-high 31 points, the Nuggets shot 57 percent from the floor in the win. It was the second coaching milestone Karl has reached in Toronto after picking up his 900th career victory on Dec.31, 2008.

QUOTABLE: "It's unbelievable. He's got 1,000 wins, he's beaten cancer twice, I think those are his biggest wins...beating cancer twice. Not very many people can say that. THE STAT: The 74 first-half points allowed by the Raptors set a franchise record for points allowed in a half at home.

TURNING POINT: Leading by nine at the break, the Nuggets started to build their lead in the third behind 13 third-quarter points from rookie Gary Forbes. The Nuggets outrebounded Toronto 14-4 in the quarter as they doubled their halftime lead to 18. While the Raptors would fight back in the fourth to cut the deficit to four, they couldn't complete the comeback.

HOT: Harrington scored a season-high 31 points. He made six 3-pointers and shot 12-for-19 from the floor.

NOT: Jerryd Bayless started in place of the injured Jose Calderon and he had a night he'd like to forget. Shooting just 1-for-9 from the floor and 0-for-2 from the foul line, Bayless couldn't get anything to drop, save for a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Starting in place of the injured Anthony, 25 year-old rookie Forbes had big shoes to fill. Finishing with 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting in 24 minutes of action, he did a solid job. Forbes stepped up in the third when the Nuggets gained separation from the Raptors, scoring 13 of his points in the quarter. He also added five rebounds, an assist and two steals.

NOTABLE: Karl became the seventh coach in NBA history to reach 1,000 career victories. As the final buzzer sounded, Karl's players surrounded him to celebrate with him and Harrington poured a cup of water over him. After the game, Raptors coach Jay Triano went into the Nuggets locker room to extend his congratulations. Former Nugget Linas Kleiza scored a season-high 26 points off of the bench. He also pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Nene scored 26 points for the Nuggets and Billups added 21.
