Much of the criticism surrounding the Miami Heat for their lackluster start has dissolved with the team reeling off five straight wins. Although they've seemingly found their rhythm, those victories were either against overmatched opponents or at home.

The team expects a much bigger challenge when it visits the Utah Jazz, who already won the first meeting of the season in Miami.

The Heat look to extend their season-high winning streak to six games and earn their first road victory over a team with a winning record Wednesday night against the Northwest Division-leading Jazz.

Since opening the season 9-8 and holding a players-only meeting after a 106-95 loss at Dallas on Nov. 27, Miami (14-8) has quieted some of its critics by winning its last five games by an average of 17.2 points.

"I think the early season trials and tribulations that we've been through just allowed us to calm down and worry about the next play," LeBron James said following Monday's 88-78 win in Milwaukee.

One of Miami's early disappointing setbacks came against the Jazz on Nov. 9.

Utah (16-6) stormed back from a 19-point, third-quarter deficit to win 116-114 in overtime. Paul Millsap scored a career-high 46 points, with 11 coming in the final 28 seconds of regulation as the Jazz rallied from eight down.

James had 20 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds in that loss, and could be poised for another big game. The six-time All-Star has a career 33.0 scoring average in seven career games at Utah.

Dwyane Wade had a season-best 39 points in the first meeting of the season with the Jazz, and again led the way for Miami on Monday, finishing with 25 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. The Heat had a 48-35 rebounding advantage and held Milwaukee to 34.6 percent shooting.

"We understand that it takes defense to win," Wade said.

Miami is allowing an average of 82.2 points on 37.7 percent shooting in its last five games, but three of the opponents its faced during the winning streak - Milwaukee, Cleveland and Detroit - have some of the NBA's worst offenses.

In addition to beating those three teams with losing records, the Heat's winning streak started with a victory over Washington, another team under .500. The only victory Miami has over a team with a winning record since Nov. 18 was an 89-77 home win over Atlanta on Saturday.

The Heat, 4-5 on the road, have yet to beat an opponent with a winning record away from Miami, falling at Boston, New Orleans, Orlando and Dallas.

Notching a victory in Utah won't be easy, as the Heat have lost all three road games against Western Conference teams this season, while the Jazz have won six of their last seven in Salt Lake City, averaging 102.3 points in those victories.

Utah's lone defeat in this stretch was Friday's sluggish 93-81 loss to the Mavericks, snapping an overall seven-game winning streak. The Jazz bounced back nicely, beating Memphis 94-85 on Monday, their 14th win in 17 games.

"The Dallas game was a slip-up but we're back on track now and hopefully we can keep going," Williams said.

Williams had 27 points and eight assists against the Grizzlies, after finishing with 12 points on 4 of 13 shooting against Dallas.

The Jazz are 12-3 when Williams reaches the 20-point mark and 4-3 when he doesn't. He had 21 points and 14 assists in Miami last month.

LeBron scores 33, Heat beat Jazz for 6th straight

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Forget that the Utah Jazz had upset Miami on the road 29 days earlier with a huge comeback.

This was a much-improved version of the Heat, even if the personnel was the same.

"You could tell they had a chip on their shoulder coming into this game," Jazz forward Paul Millsap said.

LeBron James scored 33 points, Dwyane Wade added 28 and the surging Heat extended their winning streak to six games by outscoring Utah by 14 in the fourth quarter for a 111-98 victory Wednesday night.

Utah couldn't stop the pick-and-roll. And when Jazz defenders helped inside, Chris Bosh or Zydrunas Ilgauskas knocked down outside shots.

"It was kind of pick your poison," Utah guard Deron Williams said. "It was just tough to defend."

Miami outscored Utah 34-20 in the fourth quarter, avenging a 116-114 overtime loss to Utah at home on Nov. 9. The Heat improved to 15-8, while Utah fell to 16-7.

"Right now every win is significant," said James, who once again got an earful from the crowd. "When you go into a building like this, a hostile environment with a team that's very good, great in this building, it's always good to get a win like this."

Al Jefferson scored 25 points and all five Jazz starters were in double figures by the start of the fourth. But it wasn't enough as the Heat pulled away with a 12-3 run to start the quarter.

"We were pretty much playing uphill the whole game," said Williams, who finished with 21 points but had only four in the first half.

Miami led by as many as 12 early, but the Heat found themselves trailing 78-77 entering the fourth after the Jazz mounted yet another rally. Last month, they came back from a 22-point deficit to beat the Heat.

In that game, Millsap scored a career-high 46 for Utah. This time, he got going late and finished with 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting.

Williams blamed himself for not getting the guy with the hot hand, Jefferson, the ball late.

But he also credited the Heat.

"It's a different team than we saw a month ago, and we knew that coming in," Williams said. "They had a game plan and executed it."

The loss continued an up-and-down season for the Jazz, who were riding a seven-game winning streak last week but lost Friday to Dallas.

Williams seemed more concerned about Utah's home record, which is 9-5. The Jazz lost only nine games at home last season.

"If you would have told me before the season that we would be a better road team (7-2) than a home team, I would have laughed at you," Williams said. "Hopefully we get it going."

Millsap tried to spark the Jazz again Wednesday. He grabbed the rebound off James Jones' miss and raced the length of the court for a layup at the buzzer to pull the Jazz within 28-27 to end the first quarter.

The Heat led by as many as 10 again in the second as Wade scored eight points in a 3-minute span, and James' driving layup with 4:27 left made it 49-39.

A three-point play by Andrei Kirilenko pulled the Jazz to 66-64 with 6:18 left in the third. Williams then passed underneath to Millsap for a dunk to tie it at 72 with 4:15 left, and Raja Bell put Utah ahead with a pair of free throws.

But the fourth quarter was all Miami, with the Heat hitting five of nine 3-pointers and again winning the battle on the boards.

"The biggest thing is rebounding," said Ilgauskas, who had his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards. "We're winning all the rebounding battles game after game after game. Before we were not. We have the same guys, but we're doing it with more effort, doing it collectively."

Miami outrebounded the Jazz 42-28, with a 24-8 edge in second-chance points.

"We started to click," Ilgauskas said. "We're playing better basketball. If you look at the games, it's obvious. But we still have a ways to go."

So does Utah, which has lost two of three. The Jazz had held their previous 10 opponents under 100 points, and they were 10-0 when entering the fourth with a lead until Wednesday.

"I thought Miami was more physical than we were," coach Jerry Sloan said. "It looked at times like we were intimidated (by James) and Wade. I wish we would have got up and after (James) like they were getting after us."

NOTES: Utah C Kyrylo Fesenko did not dress because of a sprained left ankle and remains in a walking boot. ... Bell (strained groin) and Kirilenko (strained quad) are day-to-day. ... THE FACTS: LeBron James had 33 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Dwyane Wade added 28 points as the Miami Heat beat the Utah Jazz 111-98 on Wednesday night. It was the Heat's third straight road win and sixth overall. The Jazz have lost two of their last three home games. Al Jefferson led Utah with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Deron Williams had 21 points and 12 assists.

QUOTABLE: "We're just doing our thing now, just playing our game and we're not being too unselfish. We're playing our game and even when both are on the court or one is sitting down -- we're attacking."

THE STAT: 24-8. Miami had 24 second-chance points, compared to just eight for the Jazz. The Heat were able to rack up the second-chance points by grabbing 15 offensive rebounds, and they took five more shots than Utah.

TURNING POINT: The Heat, trailing by one at the end of the third quarter, took control with a 12-3 run to start the fourth. Chris Bosh hit a jumper, and then Mario Chalmers, James Jones and Wade each hit a 3-pointer to give Miami an 89-81 lead. The only points Utah scored during Miami's game-changing run came from three free throws by Williams. The Heat put the game away by scoring six straight points late in the fourth, stretching their lead to 102-90.

QUOTABLE II: "I don't think we (handled him) at all. He got 33 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. He's a great player and it looked at times we were intimidated by him and Wade. I wish we would have got up and got after him like they were getting after us."

HOT: Zydrunas Ilgauskas was deadly from the field, shooting 7-for-10 and scoring 16 points. Wade (9-for-14) and James (12-for-20) also shot good percentages. For the Jazz, Paul Millsap shot 9-for-12 and scored 18 points. Raja Bell was 4-for-6 and scored 11 points.

NOT: Bosh missed six of his first seven shots, but regrouped to make six of his last nine. For the Jazz, Williams continued his struggles from 3-point range. He was 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, and is now 3-for-21 in his last five games. C.J. Miles shot 3-for-11 from the field. The Jazz shot 7.1 percent from 3-point range.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ilgauskas probably isn't on a lot of fantasy teams, but he rewarded his owners who have him on Wednesday. His 16 points nearly tripled his scoring average of 5.4 points per game. He shot a good percentage -- as usual -- and had 10 rebounds, one steal and one assist. It was his first double-double of the season.

GOOD MOVE: Ilgauskas was only averaging 17.7 minutes before Wednesday. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra made the right move by playing him nearly nine more minutes than usual and his teammates were smart to keep feeding him the ball.

BAD MOVE: The Jazz don't get the ball enough to Millsap, who scored 46 points in Utah's 116-114 overtime win over the Heat last month. He made the most of his opportunities in the rematch with the Heat, but Jefferson and Williams took more shots than he did on Wednesday.

NOTABLE: James scored 22 points in the first half, and it was the most by a Jazz opponent in a half this season. James averages 30.1 points against the Jazz. Utah held its previous 10 opponents to fewer than 100 points.
