Lakers-Clippers Preview

Following four consecutive losses, the Los Angeles Lakers have beaten two of the league's lightweights to get back on track heading into a seven-game road trip.

Their first stop won't take them far.

The Lakers will be visitors Wednesday night at Staples Center as one of the NBA's most imposing front lines gets its first look at star rookie Blake Griffin and the suddenly improving Clippers.

The Lakers (15-6) didn't crack triple digits during their longest skid since April 2007, but Kobe Bryant and his teammates picked it up offensively to stop their slide. The Lakers shot 56.6 percent in a 113-80 win over Sacramento on Friday, then Bryant, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol combined for 77 points in a 115-108 victory against Washington on Tuesday.

It wasn't all easy, however. The Lakers let the Wizards get within three after leading by as many as 19.

"When we focus, we've been really good this year," Gasol said. "But when we lose that focus, teams have been able to sneak up on us and give us trouble."

Blown lead or not, Gasol's performance should have the Lakers riding high. He finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and five blocks - the type of dominant performance he was routinely turning in during the team's 13-2 start.

He'd averaged just 14.6 points in the past five games while dealing with a strained hamstring and complaining of fatigue.

The Lakers won't get a whole lot of rest during a seven-game trip over 12 days, but they are expected to welcome injured center Andrew Bynum back during it.

That's good news for Gasol and Odom and bad news for opponents, who have watched the Lakers score 47.0 points per game in the paint - second-best in the league.

Just a half-point behind the Lakers' paint production are the Clippers (5-17), who have Griffin largely to thank for their surprising interior effectiveness.

The No. 1 pick of the 2009 draft was supposed to make his NBA debut against the Lakers in October 2009, but Griffin's arrival - and eventually his entire season - was wiped out because of a fractured left kneecap.

Considering he's averaged 25.6 points and 13.6 rebounds while posting nine consecutive double-doubles Griffin appears to be fully recovered. With 15 double-doubles, he's one behind Gasol and Minnesota's Kevin Love for the NBA lead.

Griffin's surge has turned the Clippers from the league's worst team into one that looks capable of playing with anyone. They're 4-4 in their last eight games after a 98-91 win over Sacramento on Monday, their fourth victory in five home games.

"Are we where we need to be? Of course not. Am I happy where we're at? No," first-year coach Vinny Del Negro told the team's official website. "But I am optimistic in the sense of where we are mentally, where we are confidence-wise, and how hard the guys are working."

The Clippers, however, will be short-handed Wednesday. Two games after returning from a left ankle sprain that cost him 11 games, center Chris Kaman reinjured the ankle Sunday and could be out for another extended period.

Former Laker Brian Cook, meanwhile, is serving the second of a two-game suspension for his altercation with Portland's Andre Miller, while guard Baron Davis is a game-time decision with a hamstring injury.

The teams split four meetings last season, with each team winning as the home team.

The Clippers are 1-10 when Eric Gordon scores fewer than 27 points. He's averaged 14.0 in seven career games versus the Lakers.

Lakers beat Clippers 87-86 on Fisher's layup

LOS ANGELES (AP) Clock ticking down, Derek Fisher has the ball, and he stops to launch a perimeter shot. It's a scenario the 36-year-old has executed to perfection over the years in the playoffs.

This time, Fisher did something different.

The guy who doesn't shoot a high percentage inside hit a layup on the left side at the buzzer to give the Los Angeles Lakers an 87-86 victory over the Clippers on Wednesday night after the two-time defending NBA champions trailed most of the second half.

"I assumed most guys would play me to stop and shoot so I just wanted to try and leave a little hesitation in it," Fisher said.

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points, Shannon Brown added 16 and Pau Gasol had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who ended a three-game road losing streak as the visiting team in their own building.

"Yeah!" Bryant said he was thinking as the ball went in. "He just had the lane and took it."

Eric Gordon scored 24 points, Blake Griffin had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Eric Bledsoe had 11 points and DeAndre Jordan 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who blew a 12-point lead in the third quarter.

"Hopefully, it's a learning experience to us," Gordon said. "We lose basically on turnovers. In crunch time, we made a couple of bad plays and that is what gave them a chance."

Fisher dribbled into the paint and scored over Jordan, capping a wild final 41 seconds.

"My fingertip hit it. I just wasn't up high enough," Jordan said.

Fisher added, "Had his fingernails been longer, he probably would have got to it."

Bryant's fast-break running jumper drew the Lakers to 84-83 and his 19-footer put them ahead by one with 22 seconds to go.

The Lakers scored on two consecutive turnovers by Gordon before he found Jordan in the paint for a dunk that put the Clippers in front 86-85 with 15 seconds left.

But the Clippers were denied their sixth win of the season when Fisher, the wily clutch shooter in so many NBA finals, found his way into the paint for the winning basket in the first meeting of the season between the Staples Center co-tenants.

"It was a tough shot," Bledsoe said. "That's what he's there for. He has been doing it for years for them."

Lamar Odom finished with eight points before fouling out with 1:14 to play.

The Clippers played without Chris Kaman and Randy Foye. Baron Davis came off the bench despite a bad left hamstring. The Lakers were without Andrew Bynum, who is expected to return during the remainder of their seven-game road trip.

Griffin wasn't hanging his head after the loss.

"It says we're not going to back down from anybody," he said. "I'm confident with our team and with our talent."

Bryant scored the Lakers' first five points of the third before the Clippers took over.

They used a 23-8 run to take a 66-54 lead, with Griffin showing off a variety of moves, including a jump hook and a fast-break dunk. The Lakers repeatedly missed from 3-point range, with their only success a 3 by Bryant from 26 feet that drew ahhs from the crowd.

With the Lakers' offense in oblivion, Brown rescued them by scoring their final 11 points. Nine of those came on 3-pointers, including a heave from behind the half-court line at the buzzer that sailed cleanly into the net and left them trailing 71-65.

With Odom guarding him, Griffin had a couple of highlight dunks in the first half, when he was limited to four points and five rebounds at a time when he usually has double-digit points and rebounds.

The teams played evenly in the first half, when the Lakers' largest lead was eight before the Clippers led 43-41 at the break. The Clippers didn't take their first lead until 25 seconds were left in the second quarter when Bledsoe hit a pair of free throws to cap a 7-0 run that ended the half.

THE FACTS: The left-handed layup by Derek Fisher wasn't the most improbable buzzer-beater Wednesday night, but it was certainly the most important, lifting the Los Angeles Lakers to a 87-86 victory over the host Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

QUOTABLE: "That's what he's there for."

THE STAT: The Lakers rallied from a five-point deficit with just over a minute to play and took a one-point lead on Kobe Bryant's pull-up jumper with 22.8 seconds remaining. Clippers center DeAndre Jordan scored on a slam dunk with 15.5 seconds left to re-take the lead, setting up Fisher's buzzer-beating left-handed lay up over the block of Jordan and high off the glass.

TURNING POINT: Long before the excitement of the final minute, the Lakers began erasing a 12-point deficit when Shannon Brown scored 11 points in the final 2:11 of the third quarter, including a 57-footer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 71-65. Brown finished with 16 points.

HOT: In the matchup of high-scoring shooting guards, Bryant and Eric Gordon nearly matched each other shot for shot. Bryant finished with 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Gordon had 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting.

NOT: The Clippers struggled to get production from their small forwards. Al-Farouq Aminu, one of three rookies in the starting lineup, shot 1-for-9 and scored three points. His replacement, Ryan Gomes, was 2-for-8 with five points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Clippers rookie forward Blake Griffin was saddled with foul trouble for most of the first half, but still finished with his 10th consecutive double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Even though the Clippers starting five were still on the floor, Lakers coach Phil Jackson inserted Brown in place of Bryant with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter and the Lakers trailing by nine. Brown then went on his scoring spree to get the Lakers -- and their fans -- back in the game.

BAD MOVE: The Clippers missed three slam dunks in the opening minutes of the second half, points they certainly could have used down the stretch.

ROOKIE WATCH: Lakers rookie Derrick Caracter suffered a sprained left ankle in the second quarter and did not return.

NOTABLE: Gordon has scored at least 20 points in 10 consecutive games. Bryant has scored at least 20 in 15 straight.
