Denver Nuggets coach George Karl has a chance to join an elite group of names by earning his 1,000th career win. He'd like to get it out of the way as soon as possible.

Looking for the milestone victory, Karl hopes his team can extend its longest winning streak of the season in the opener of a four-game road trip against the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday night.

Karl is looking to join Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Pat Riley, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson and Larry Brown in the 1,000-win club. The understated coach, though, would like the attention off him quickly.

"I would probably like it in Charlotte and get it over with and have some beers and keep our momentum going in a good direction," Karl said.

Karl, in his seventh season with the Nuggets, is seventh all-time and fourth among active coaches in victories.

"He's a terrific coach," said Brown, who will oppose Karl from the Bobcats bench. "He's overcome a lot. I think we're all proud of what he's accomplished, and I think he's going to win a lot more games before he hangs it up."

Karl missed the final two months of last season while battling throat and neck cancer, only a few years after surviving prostate cancer. Now with a clean bill of health, he has the Nuggets on a seven-game winning streak.

Carmelo Anthony suffered through another off night, but Nene scored a season-high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting as Denver beat Memphis 108-107 on Sunday.

The Nuggets (13-6) led by 15 at halftime but allowed the Grizzlies to outscore them 30-14 in the third quarter.

"We've had a bad habit on this home stretch about getting big leads and losing them," said guard Arron Afflalo, who scored a season-high 25 points. "So, we have to do a much better job of maintaining our focus and maintaining our lead."

Anthony was held to 13 points and shot a season-low 20.0 percent (4 for 20). The three-time All Star has averaged 13.8 points and 28.8 percent from the field over his last four games, but he should have a good chance to bounce back Tuesday. He has averaged 32.2 points in six road games versus Charlotte.

Matching that number could go a long way toward helping Karl reach the 1,000-win plateau.

"When you sit back and think about having 1,000 wins, that's a lot of damn wins, man," he said. "You sit back and think about how many seasons and how many wins you have to have in each season, that's a lot. We want to get it done for him."

The Nuggets will be without big man Chris Andersen after he fractured a bone in his lower back Friday. He is expected to miss up to two weeks.

While Brown is happy for Karl, he wasn't pleased with his team's latest effort Saturday against Philadelphia.

The Bobcats (7-13) trailed by 16 heading into the second quarter and lost 109-91, their fifth consecutive road defeat.

"You can't win in this league if you don't have 15 guys playing hard," Brown said. "We don't play together, don't move the ball and don't defend."

Charlotte has been outscored by a total of 33 points in the opening period of its last three losses.

"No disrespect and I love my teammates, but I think everybody was more focused on doing their job last year," forward Gerald Wallace said. "We've got to find a way to get some of that intensity back."

Wallace, second on the team with 16.5 points per game, was held to eight against the 76ers. He has averaged 24.5 points in his last four home meetings with Denver, though, and scored 40 during a 119-116 win over the Nuggets on Jan. 14, 2008.

Charlotte has lost four of the last five meetings.

Denver last won eight in a row from Jan. 11-Jan. 27.

Bobcats deny Karl 1,000th win, beat Nuggets 100-98

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Everything pointed to a storybook night for George Karl. Sitting at 999 NBA wins, he was back in North Carolina where he played in college and coaching against buddy Larry Brown.

Karl even joked before the game of missing the postgame flight to Boston and drinking wine with Brown to celebrate becoming just the seventh coach to win 1,000 games.

Instead, Karl was slumped in a chair at the end of the night dressed in a Tar Heel sweatshirt debating a late-game decision and lamenting the end of the Denver Nuggets' seven-game winning streak.

Stephen Jackson scored 23 points, Gerald Wallace added 20 and the Charlotte Bobcats rode their big guns in building a comfortable lead before sweating out a 100-98 victory Tuesday night.

"We only come here one time a year and of course going against Larry is always a challenge," Karl said of Brown, a 1,000-win club member. "It would have been something I'd have remembered if I won my 1,000th here. But hopefully we'll get it on this trip."

The Nuggets nearly rallied from eight points down with 90 seconds left. After Jackson failed to hit the rim on a 3-point attempt, the Nuggets had a chance to tie. Chauncey Billups dribbled the ball into the right corner, but his fadeaway that would have tied it bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Karl said he was "kicking himself" over not calling a timeout after Billups grabbed Jackson's miss.

"It was a tough number. We rebounded at 7 (seconds) or something like that," Karl said. "The initial bust out I thought was good. At the end, we didn't have enough guys flooding the rebound, flooding the lane and trying to make something happen. I'm sure I'll look on film and I'll probably think I'll want to call timeout."

Billups scored 25 points and Carmelo Anthony added 22 points and seven rebounds for the Nuggets, who nearly overcame a miserable start and 43 percent shooting to force overtime.

"I had (D.J.) Augustin on me, who I knew couldn't really affect my shot," Billups said. "I got a good look, just didn't knock it down."

Jackson scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including consecutive 3-pointers to put Charlotte ahead 95-88 with 3:23 left. Boris Diaw's bucket with 1:35 left made it 99-91.

The Bobcats then did just enough to pick up their third win in eight games.

Augustin added 18 points and Tyrus Thomas scored 16 for Charlotte before leaving left late in the fourth quarter with a tight left quadriceps in a game with plenty of twists. Jackson also had nine rebounds and seven assists, and Wallace added nine boards.

"We have to start winning games now, so we don't have to use so much energy at the end of the season to be in the position we want to be in," Jackson said.

Charlotte's increased intensity left the 59-year-old Karl, who missed the final two months of last season while fighting cancer, looking for answers at the start of a four-game road trip.

"I think defensively our urgency was not where it should be to win when you're playing on the road," Karl said.

Back in North Carolina where he helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1972 Final Four, Karl understood the significance of going for 1,000 wins here while coaching against Brown.

But Karl, in his 23rd season, had a quick replay before the game when asked if it was the "perfect storm" to reach the milestone,

"Or the perfect storm to get your (butt) kicked," Karl said. "One or the other."

That was the case early, as the sluggish Nuggets missed 18 of their first 23 shots and fell behind 27-16 early in the second quarter. Wallace, off to a slow start this season coming off his first All-Star appearance, scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half as Charlotte took a 52-47 halftime lead.

Anthony, who missed five of his first six shots from the field, scored 10 points in the third quarter as Denver went on a 16-7 run to tie it at 76 entering the fourth.

Despite a near meltdown late, Brown beat his friend for his 1,326th win in the NBA and ABA, leaving him 10 shy of breaking Don Nelson's record.

Karl's next chance comes Wednesday in Boston.

"He'll win another 1,000," Brown said of Karl. "I'm proud to be in the same league with him. All his teams play the right way. I'm proud of what he's accomplished. He's done a marvelous job and has overcome a lot."

NOTES: Brown reminisced before the game about first meeting Karl when he played pickup games in Chapel Hill when he was a player in the ABA and Karl was a college player. "He was cocky as hell," Brown said, smiling, "and he hasn't changed." ... Brown said Bobcats G Gerald Henderson (knee) is doing more work but still hasn't been cleared for contact drills. ... Bobcats C Kwame Brown, Thomas and Billups all got technical fouls for complaining.

THE FACTS: Stephen Jackson scored 23 points to lead the Charlotte Bobcats to a 100-98 victory over the visiting Denver Nuggets, snapping the Nuggets' seven-game win streak. Chauncey Billups led all scorers with 25 points while Denver coach George Karl will have to wait at least one more game to pick up his 1,000th career NBA win.

THE STAT: Charlotte used a hot-shooting hand from behind the arc in the fourth quarter to pick up the win Tuesday night. The Bobcats shot 5-for-8 on 3-pointers in the final period and finished the ballgame with nine trifectas.

TURNING POINT: Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin connected on a pair of threes in the span of just 50 seconds to propel Charlotte to a five-point lead. Augustin hit his first three of the quarter with 6:41 to play, breaking an 83-83 tie. He added another three with 5:51 to play and pushed the Bobcats lead to 89-85.

HOT: Jackson put up strong numbers again with a 23-point, nine-rebound, seven-assist night. He also added two steals and a block for good measure. Jackson is averaging 22 points, six rebounds and 5.7 assists since coming back from a one-game suspension on December 3.

NOT: Carmelo Anthony's fourth quarter. The All-Star forward scored just two points in the final quarter on 1-for-5 shooting. As a team, the Nuggets shot just 7-for-21 from the floor in the final period.

ROOKIE WATCH: Gary Forbes of Denver netted three points in nine minutes. He was the only rookie on either team to log any minutes.

NOTABLE: Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace recorded his 17th game with double-figure scoring and his eighth with 20-plus points and tied a season-high with five assists. Jackson recorded his 19th game with double-figure scoring. Bobcats forward Tyrus Thomas recorded his eighth double-figure scoring game in the team's nine home contests. Anthony recorded his 19th game in double figures this season and his 15th with 20-plus points. Billups tied his season high with 25 points recording his 16th game in double figures and his third game with 20-plus points. Charlotte shot 50 percent from the floor (39-for-78).
