Raptors-Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers are off to their best start in three seasons, but are struggling to take care of the ball.

The Toronto Raptors hope that trend continues.

The turnover-prone Pacers return home Monday night after a four-game West Coast road trip to host the Raptors.

Indiana committed a season-high 25 turnovers and blew a 12-point lead in Friday's 105-97 defeat in Phoenix. The Pacers (9-9) are at the .500 mark through 18 games for the first time since 2007-08, but dropped the final two games of their trip after winning the first two.

"We're not a happy group right now, nor should we be," coach Jim O'Brien told the team's official website. "We had a chance to make this a very good road trip and we didn't do it."

Providing extra possessions for the opposition also cost the Pacers in a 110-88 defeat at Utah on Wednesday. Indiana lost the turnover battle 43-21 in the two losses combined.

Danny Granger, who averages 21.8 points but was held to eight against the Suns, said Indiana is confident it can get back on track.

"We're disappointed, a little frustrated we let one get away in Phoenix with 100 turnovers or whatever it was," Granger said. "We've just got to come back (Monday) night (against Toronto)."

The Raptors are looking to bounce back themselves after a 116-99 loss to New York on Sunday. Toronto (8-12) has dropped three of five after a season-high four-game winning streak.

Coach Jay Triano wasn't pleased with his team's effort, despite placing at least five players in double figures for the fourth straight game.

"You can go through the list and see who didn't play well for us," Triano said. "When your list is that long you're not going to beat the better teams"

Jerryd Bayless scored a season-high 23 points off the bench in his fifth game since the Raptors acquired him from Portland in a Nov. 20 trade. The guard, whom the Pacers originally selected with the 11th pick in the 2008 draft before trading him to Portland, had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting the last time he faced Indiana, a 102-79 Blazers victory March 3.

The Raptors would welcome another solid effort from Amir Johnson, who set a season high with 22 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against the Knicks. He's scored in double figures in his last two games after back-to-back four-point performances.

"I'm taking the open shots and I'm not rushing anything," Johnson said. "I just try and make myself available and knock down shots."

Toronto has lost four straight in Indiana including a 130-115 defeat Feb. 2, but did get a career-high 34 points from Andrea Bargnani in that contest. Danny Granger had 23 points to lead seven Pacers in double figures.

Rush leads Pacers past Raptors

INDIANAPOLIS(AP) Last season, it took the Indiana Pacers until the new year to reach double-digit wins.

This time, they made it before Christmas

Brandon Rush scored a season-high 26 points, Danny Granger had 21 and the Pacers put seven players in double figures in a 124-100 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

"The good thing is, the guys in the locker room are not happy being 10-9," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "It's good to have a winning record, but I think if you ask anyone in a Pacers uniform, if we had done the things that we did tonight on a regular basis, it would be a lot better than a game over .500. But that's a learning experience."

The Pacers' improvement is based on a developing young core of players - Rush, Darren Collison and Roy Hibbert.

Rush, a reserve, was 10 for 18 from the field, including 6 for 8 from 3-point range. He was inconsistent his first two years in the league, but he has caught team president Larry Bird's attention this season.

"Larry Bird said to him a couple weeks ago, 'You're playing like the guy I thought I drafted,"' O'Brien said. "He's playing great. He's playing really strong defense and scoring off the dribble."

Collison, a second-year guard the Pacers acquired in an offseason trade, had 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Hibbert, a third-year center, had 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

As the chemistry builds and the young players develop, O'Brien's expectations grow.

"Even though they're familiar faces to our fans, they're still inexperienced," he said. "They're starting to click. If they can continue to click in all phases then we'll be a playoff team."

Granger also contributed nine rebounds and five assists in the Pacers' second-highest scoring effort of the season.

Indiana was disappointed with losses to Utah and Phoenix at the end of a four-game road trip and responded by shooting 55 percent from the field, including a 13-for-26 effort from behind the arc.

Apparently, road wins against the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento weren't good enough.

"We thought we should have went 3-1 on the West Coast," Granger said. "We wanted to get this one and get back on the winning track. We pretty much won the game from the start."

Granger, Indiana's leading scorer for the season, made just eight of 29 shots combined against Utah and Phoenix, but went 9 for 16 against Toronto.

"I'm not worried about where my shot is, it's always going to be there," Granger said. "It's just a matter of what kind of shots I'm taking. I have to mix up how many 3s I'm taking, when I'm attacking, and different things like that."

Jose Calderon scored 21 points and Amir Johnson added 15 for the Raptors. Andrea Bargnani, who entered the game averaging 20.7 points, was held to 12 on 5-for-11 shooting.

"We have to come with more energy," Bargnani said. "We have to come more prepared, especially in the first and second quarters. It seems like we are just watching the other team play and we are doing nothing."

Toronto had won six of nine, including victories over Boston and Oklahoma City.

"We have to do it every day," Calderon said. "We have to play as a team every night for 48 minutes."

The Pacers stretched their lead to 28 early in the third quarter before the Raptors made a run to close to 78-62, leading to an Indiana timeout. The Raptors trailed by 15 before Indiana went on a 7-0 run, including 3-pointers by Rush and James Posey.

The statistic that pleased O'Brien the most was the 33 assists.

"There's going to be games that we shoot the lights out, and that's going to be very bad news for our opponents when we shoot as well as we did tonight," he said. "When we make the extra pass, we tend to shoot the basketball better."

The Pacers built a 42-21 lead early in the second quarter. Bargnani didn't score until 52 seconds remained in the first half. By then, the Raptors trailed 64-42.

NOTES: Toronto F Peja Stojakovic, a former Pacer, was not with the team because of a swollen left knee. ... Indiana F Tyler Hansbrough didn't play until 6:29 remained. At one point, fans chanted, "We want Tyler." He finished with four points in six minutes. ... Indiana's reserves scored 50 points.

Raptors-Pacers notebook

THE FACTS: Brandon Rush scored a season-high 26 points each as the Indiana Pacers pulled away throughout the first half for a 124-100 victory over the Toronto Raptors at Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.

Rush, a third-year forward, shot 10 of 18 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range for Indiana, which never trailed and led by as many as 28 in the third quarter.

Danny Granger added 21 points for Indiana, which shot 55.3 percent from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range. Indiana had four starters shoot over 50 percent from the field, with all five starters in double figures and seven players overall.

Jose Calderon had 21 points for Toronto, which is now 8-13.

The Pacers are 10-9.

THE STAT: O'Brien said a huge reason the Pacers shot 50 percent from 3-point range was good ball movement on offense, particularly in the first half. The Pacers finished with 33 assists. "It was pretty darned good," O' Brien said of the Pacers' ball movement. "All of our guys really were looking for one another. That's fun to watch, fun to coach, when you have that kind of unselfishness."

TURNING POINT: The Pacers led so big so early that the real turning point was a first quarter in which Indiana 51.9 percent -- 3 of 6 from 3-point range -- to take a 13-point lead. Indiana outscored the Raptors 20-5 during one stretch late in the first quarter, extending the lead from from 11-10 to 31-15. Toronto never got the deficit into single digits again. Granger and Rush each hit 3-pointers during the run. "We jumped on them in the beginning and really didn't give them much of a chance," Pacers point guard Darren Collison said.

QUOTABLE II: "The threes killed us. All of our cover was to take away the three-point shot. Our guys got caught in screens. You can't let this team shoot threes.''

HOT: Rush has shown improvement much of the season, and that continued early Monday. The third-year veteran shot 6 of 8 from the field in the first half and was key to the Pacers pulling away for an early lead. He scored 16 points on 6 of 8 first-half shooting and shot 4 of 4 from 3-point range.

NOT: The Raptors didn't shoot horribly, but guard DeMar DeRozan shot 33.3 percent, including 1 of 6 from the field in the first three quarters. He finished 3 of 9 from the field.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Having just joined the Pacers in the off-season, Collison has spent a lot of the early part of the season learning just how quickly the ball must be pushed upcourt in the Pacers' offense. But during that learning period, he has shown he can score big given the opportunity. On Monday, he finished with one assist, but also had 17 points, including eight in the fourth quarter to help the Pacers clinch the victory.

NOTABLE: Second-year forward Tyler Hansbrough was a "Did Not Play ? Coaches Decision" in two of the Pacers' last five games, and O'Brien said Hansbrough is still developing after missing much of his rookie season with injuries. The 2009 first-round draft selection has scored four, two and two points in his last three games. "I consider Tyler a rookie because of what he went through last year," O'Brien said before the game. "It's taken Tyler some time. Once he gets it, he'll have it the rest of his NBA career and he'll be a very, very productive basketball player." Hansbrough entered Monday's game in the fourth quarter and finished with four points and a rebound. . . .Rush's 26 points were the most off the bench for a Pacers player this season. . . . The Pacers have made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game seven times this season. . . . The Pacers' victory moved them a game over .500. They didn't win their 10th game until the 33rd game of last season. "Our guys weren't happy about what happened on the West Coast," O'Brien said of a just-completed four-game road trip on which Indiana finished 2-2 with a victory over the defending NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers. "The good thing is the guys in the locker room are not happy with being 10-9."
