After missing the last two games, Kevin Durant may return from a knee injury in time to face one of his favorite opponents.

Durant could be back in the lineup Sunday when the Oklahoma City Thunder host the Golden State Warriors, who've often been unable to contain the NBA's leading scorer.

The Thunder (13-7) were 3-0 this season without Durant in the lineup before suffering a 111-99 loss at Toronto on Friday. Durant, who is averaging 27.3 points, was out with a sprained left knee for a second straight game after missing a 123-120 triple-overtime win at New Jersey on Wednesday.

"That's 30 points a night," said James Harden. "We're capable of winning without him but we have to get stops. It's that much more pressure on us to get stops. We were ready for it, we just didn't do it."

Against the Raptors, Oklahoma City led by seven at halftime, but was outscored 34-18 in the third quarter. Toronto outrebounded the Thunder 42-34.

Coach Scott Brooks said Durant could return Sunday. The team lists him as day to day.

"Hopefully he gets better quickly and comes back Sunday," Brooks said. "We'll see how he feels and evaluate him before the game."

Durant's return could come against a team he has dominated. Last season, Durant averaged 35.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in four games against the Warriors, three of which Oklahoma City won. In his career against them, he's averaging 30.5 points - his highest against any opponent - while scoring at least 40 points in four of the 11 meetings.

If Durant isn't ready to go, the Thunder may need a better performance from Russell Westbrook, who scored 20 points on 9-of-19 shooting against the Raptors after averaging 32.3 points in the previous four games.

Oklahoma City may not need Durant to beat struggling Golden State (8-11), which has dropped seven of eight and is looking to avoid a third straight loss after falling 107-101 to Phoenix on Thursday. The Warriors were outscored 31-20 in the first quarter and went 10 of 17 at the free-throw line, where the Suns were 21 of 22.

Monta Ellis scored 38 points and David Lee added 25, but Stephen Curry, who is averaging 20.1 points, was held to nine on 4-of-10 shooting. He missed time in the first half when he was poked in the eye.

"That slowed me down," said Curry, who had 32 points in Tuesday's 118-98 loss to San Antonio. "I was initiating the offense well and getting people involved. It just took me a while to get back."

The offense stalled while Curry was out as depth continues to be a problem for Golden State. The Warriors' bench was outscored 33-15.

The good news for Golden State is that Lee played his best game since missing eight contests with a staph infection in his left elbow. Lee, who was averaging 14.3 points before the injury, shot 10 of 17 from the field, had eight rebounds and five assists and played a season-high 45 minutes.

The Warriors have lost their last three visits to Oklahoma City. They have given up 107.7 points per game in those contests while scoring 97.3.

Warriors' rally falls short in loss to Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY(AP) The Oklahoma City Thunder got out to just the kind of start they wanted: a big opening run with Kevin Durant showing his injured left knee was healthy again.

The finish left something to be desired.

Durant scored 28 points in his first game back from the knee injury and Russell Westbrook added 19 points and 13 assists, but the Thunder nearly squandered a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter before beating the Golden State Warriors 114-109 on Sunday night.

"I think we started the fourth quarter off kind of bad - a couple turnovers and easy baskets for them - and that's kind of contagious. We've got to do a better job of if we're up by a lot, not be too relaxed," said Durant, the NBA's scoring leader at 27.3 points per game.

"We're not that good yet to be relaxed when we have big leads. We've got to keep fighting for 48 minutes. It's a lesson learned for us."

Stephen Curry scored a season-high 39 points and ignited the Warriors' rally that cut the deficit to three in the final minute.

Oklahoma City made its first 29 free throws before Durant and Westbrook missed three in the final 2 1/2 minutes to let Golden State stick around. Monta Ellis nailed a 3-pointer from the left side to get the Warriors to 110-107 with 23.7 seconds left, but Jeff Green and Durant hit two foul shots apiece to seal it.

Durant missed the previous two games with a sprained left knee, with Oklahoma City beating New Jersey in triple overtime and losing at Toronto.

"He's the No. 1 scorer in the league, and you've got to pay attention to him," Westbrook said. "If you don't, then you're in trouble."

Ellis finished with 29 points and Dorell Wright had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Golden State.

Serge Ibaka had 19 points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter and Green added 17 for Oklahoma City.

The Thunder scored the first eight points of the game and charged out to an 18-2 lead when Durant corralled a wayward alley-oop pass with his right hand and was able to control it for a two-handed jam, then followed it with a 3-pointer from the left wing.

Durant said the alley-oop play "tested my knee out early on and it felt good."

He also finished off a 10-0 run in the second quarter with a 17-foot jumper from the right wing as Oklahoma City extended its lead to 23 at 50-27 with 5:19 left before halftime.

"I think we did a great job of starting the game off, setting the tone early on, making them know that we're going to play defense and we're going to go down and get some easy baskets," Durant said.

The Warriors started climbing back, though, with Curry hitting three jumpers and a 3-pointer during a 13-2 response, and Golden State cut it to 54-42 after Reggie Williams' jumper from the free-throw line at the halftime buzzer.

The Thunder were 20 for 20 on free throws in the third quarter, their most makes in a quarter since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008, while doubling their lead to 90-70.

"It's tough, especially on the road, when you're trying to claw your way back and they're getting easy buckets at the free throw line," Curry said. "It's tough to win like that."

Much of the Thunder's seventh sellout crowd of the season had already exited before the Warriors made their final charge. Curry made a 3-pointer, a three-point play and a jumper in quick succession during a 10-2 burst that got Golden State to 96-83 and gave the Warriors life. Williams started another 11-4 run with a 3-pointer from the right wing after Durant went streaking past while trying for a steal, and Ellis' driving layup with 1:14 to play made it 108-102.

Wright then missed a wide open 3-pointer from the right wing with 50 seconds left, and the Warriors never had the ball with a chance to tie in the closing minutes.

Oklahoma City finished 37 for 40 from the foul line.

"There's frustration as to why we can't start off the way we finish the second, third and fourth quarters. We won the game by like 10 after the first quarter," Curry said. "We've just got to figure out how to come out of the blocks a little bit faster."

NOTES: Golden State's Ekpe Udoh, the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft, was cleared last week to do some live action and competitive drills in practice. A native of the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond, he had surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left wrist and missed all of summer league, training camp and the season so far. "He's way behind," coach Keith Smart said. "But conditioning-wise, he's right there." ... The Warriors had to burn a timeout when they couldn't inbound the ball to start the second quarter. ... Oklahoma City is 11-1 in games decided by seven points or fewer.

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder jumped out to a big lead early and then held on for dear life down the stretch for a 114-109 win over the Golden State Warriors. The Thunder led by as many as 23 but were outscored 39-24 in the fourth quarter. It wasn't quite enough for Golden State. Thunder forward Kevin Durant led OKC with 28 points while point guard Russell Westbrook added 19 and dished 13 assists. Warriors guards Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis combined for 68 points as Curry set a season-high with 39 points. The Warriors have now lost four straight in Oklahoma City.

QUOTABLE: "It was not the way to finish but we got the win. We wanted to play better in the fourth quarter. Giving up almost 40 points is not good basketball."

THE STAT: In a game that turned out very close, Oklahoma City outscored Golden State at the free-throw line by 19 points. OKC was 37-for-40 at the stripe, while the Warriors were 18-for-21.

TURNING POINT: An 18-2 start by Oklahoma City put the Warriors into a hole they could never dig their way out of. Golden State rallied in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer than three.

QUOTABLE II: "We've just gotta keep executing and finish our plays. That hurt us early. Steph played great, he's a little beaten up right now, a little sore but he played great."

HOT: In the fourth quarter, Golden State guards Ellis and Curry were a combined 8-for-12 for 22 points.

NOT: Also in the fourth quarter, the entire Thunder team was just 7-for-20 for 24 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Curry filled the stat sheet with 39 points on 14-for-20 shooting including 4-for-7 on 3-pointers. He also dished six assists, stole the ball twice, blocked a shot and grabbed a rebound.

GOOD MOVE: Brooks put defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha on Ellis, the Warriors' leading scorer. In the first 22 minutes of the game Sefolosha held Ellis to just 2-for-5 shooting and five points.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors forward Jeff Adrien played 10:51, scored five points and grabbed six rebounds. Guard Jeremy Lin was in the game for 8:34, scoring one point. Thunder center Cole Aldrich is on assignment to Tulsa of the NBA D-League.

NOTABLE: This is the first Sunday game Oklahoma City has won this season. The Thunder had come in 0-3 in home Sunday games and 0-1 on the road. The Thunder are a combined 13-3 on other days of the week.
