The last time the New York Knicks won six straight road games, first-year New Orleans coach Monty Williams was a rookie playing for New York.

The Knicks will try to accomplish that feat Friday night when they try to hand Williams' Hornets a rare home loss.

New York (10-9) is over .500 this late in the season for the first time since it was 16-15 on Jan. 4, 2005. The Knicks have won seven of eight overall after beating New Jersey 111-100 on Tuesday.

"We are playing better and we can see we can get a lot better than this," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We're all excited now, but reality is we'll go to New Orleans on Friday. That's going to be hard to win."

The Knicks haven't won six straight on the road since a seven-game run Dec. 27, 1994-Jan. 22, 1995. Williams, a first-round pick by New York in 1994, played sparingly as a reserve that season.

He's now coaching a New Orleans (13-5) team that's been a surprise after winning 37 games last season. The Hornets are tied for the best home record in the NBA with an 8-1 mark after beating Charlotte 89-73 on Wednesday.

"The hometown crowd is great," center Emeka Okafor said. "It gave us that boost that we needed."

Under Williams, the Hornets are a vastly improved defensive team. They are near the top of the league in limiting opponents to 43.1 percent shooting after last season's 48.3 percent mark - the NBA's third-worst.

Defense was the key Wednesday, as the Hornets limited the Bobcats to 40.8 percent from the field. New Orleans outscored Charlotte 24-11 in the fourth quarter.

"It's not going to be pretty all the time," Williams said. "As a coach you'd like to have everything look nice and execute offense and guys come off screens and hit jump shots, but in the NBA you are going to have games like that and we are just glad we came out on the winning side."

David West scored 22 points and Chris Paul handed out 14 assists.

Paul will renew a rivalry with Knicks point guard Raymond Felton that began in college when the former was at Wake Forest and the latter at North Carolina. The two were drafted fourth and fifth, respectively, in 2005, and Paul has blossomed into a three-time All-Star.

Felton, though, is enjoying the best season of his career in his first one with New York. He's averaging 18.2 points and 8.1 assists as he gets accustomed to playing with Amare Stoudemire, who's averaging 36.0 points the last two games.

"I think he's getting more comfortable with what we're doing," said D'Antoni about Felton. "We're getting better spacing. There's a timing between the two that they have to develop. You never know if they will and they have."

Stoudemire averaged 26.3 points on 62.7 percent shooting last season against the Hornets while with Phoenix, although he should be challenged by their improved defense.

The Knicks have won four straight over New Orleans, overcoming Paul's averages of 22.5 points and 10.8 assists in those games.

Stoudemire leads Knicks past Hornets, 100-92

NEW ORLEANS(AP) Amare Stoudemire wanted to play with the kind of contagious aggression that would help his Knicks teammates believe they can beat a Hornets team that had lost only once in nine games at home.

During a span of less than seven minutes in the second quarter Friday night, Stoudemire did precisely that by scoring 16 of his 34 points while almost single-handedly erasing an eight-point deficit. After that, the Knicks eventually built a lead as large as 14 before taking their eighth win in nine games, 100-92.

"I try to be a dominant force," said Stoudemire, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. "With the energy I try to bring forth on the basketball court, with my communication skills and my leadership role, I try to provide some confidence and swagger to us as a team and it seems to be working well."

Trevor Ariza had a season-high 21 points for New Orleans, which was without David West because of a stomach virus. Chris Paul had 17 points and 10 assists.

The Hornets (13-6) have dropped five of seven and are quickly fading back into the pack after a surprisingly strong start. First-year coach Monty Williams said his team has been getting increasingly sloppy, pointing to 19 turnovers that led to 29 Knicks points.

"We have to understand the value of the ball," Williams said. "It doesn't make sense for a team with the ballhandlers we have to turn the ball over like that against a team that doesn't really pressure the ball. There's no excuse."

New York led 74-73 late in the third when Shawne Williams' driving scoop off the glass and Raymond Felton's floater as he was fouled ignited a 10-0 run that gave the Knicks (11-9) their first double-digit lead of the game. Wilson Chandler's second 3 of the fourth quarter made it 92-78 with 6:02 to go and New Orleans was unable to recover.

New York went 13 for 30 from 3-point range. Chandler, who scored 14, made four 3s, while Danilo Gallinari and Williams made three each.

The Hornets simply couldn't keep up with that, going 3 of 14 from deep.

"We knew this was going to be a game where we could measure ourselves and see how good we could be," Stoudemire said. "It was a big win for us, definitely a great step in the right direction. We're really showing how good we can be."

Jason Smith made his fourth career start in place of West, who leads the Hornets in scoring with 18.8 points per game. Smith had 12 points, while Emeka Okafor had 11 points and 14 rebounds for New Orleans.

Felton finished with 17 points and 13 assists for New York, hitting a pair of 3s. Gallinari and Williams each scored 13.

The Hornets scored the first eight points of the game and led most of the first half, going up 28-21 when Willie Green's basket early in the second quarter capped another 8-0 run.

The Hornets were up 36-28 when Stoudemire started to take over. Mixing in a couple jumpers with an array of strong inside moves, Stoudemire scored 16 of New York's next 19 points, tying it at 49 on a dunk. Gallinari then hit consecutive 3s to help the Knicks take a 55-53 halftime lead.

New York was connecting from everywhere, and wound up shooting 47 percent (39 of 83) for the game. Paul said there wasn't much the Hornets could do about that.

"We try to keep teams out of our paint and they knocked down 3s all night long," Paul said. "We gave up a little bit of everything. Sometimes it's one or the other, tonight we gave up both."

NOTES: This marked this first time this season in 19 games that the Hornets did not have the same starting five. ... New York has won five straight meetings spanning the past two-plus seasons. The Hornets' last win over the Knicks came in April 2008, before Mike D'Antoni became New York's coach. ... The teams will meet once more this season in New York on March 2. ... Announced attendance was 14,020, and the Hornets are averaging 13,865 through 10 home games despite a strong start.

THE FACTS: Amar'e Stoudemire dominated on the inside with 34 points and 10 rebounds and the rest of his teammates were hot from the outside as the New York Knicks defeated the New Orleans Hornets 100-92 on Friday night at the New Orleans Arena. The Knicks (11-9) are off to their best start since the 2001-2002 season.

THE STAT: The Knicks' 3-point shooting helped open things up for Stoudemire, and vice versa, as New York hit 13 3-pointers at a 43.3 percent clip.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks went on a 15-3 run near the end of the first half to give New York a 55-50 lead with 37.9 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Hornets never recovered.

HOT: Knicks point guard Raymond Felton outplayed Hornets point guard Chris Paul. Felton scored 17 points and tallied 13 assists in the win. Paul ended with 17 points and 10 assists, but looked lethargic for much of the game.

NOT: The Hornets and their ability to hold onto the basketball. New Orleans turned the ball over 19 times and the Knicks turned it 29 points.

GOOD MOVE: Knicks forward Shawne Williams came out of nowhere to go 3-for-4 behind the 3-point line en route to scoring 13 points in nearly 21 minutes of action. Williams only averaged four minutes per game before Friday night's win.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hornets forward Trevor Ariza had a solid game across the board despite the loss with 21 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

QUOTABLE II: "Good question. I should have done it two months ago. I just kind of got the courage and did it. He played good and he's been looking good all along. I wanted to do it last game. I did a little bit of it two games ago. We just needed what he gives us -- shooting. I knew he was going to be open with Amar'e and the pick and roll."

NOTABLE: The Hornets were mum on the Friday reports that the NBA may purchase the majority share of the franchise in the hopes of expediting the sale of the team. ... The Hornets (13-6) have lost five of their last seven games. ... Hornets forward David West didn't play vs. the Knicks with a stomach illness. West has been the go-to scorer for the Hornets all season, leading the team with 18.8 points. Forward Jason Smith started in West's place. It was Smith's first start since Nov. 27, 2009 when he played for the Philadelphia 76ers against Atlanta. ... Hornets center Pops Mensah-Bonsu underwent a precautionary procedure after elbowing a teammate in the mouth and receiving a gash from a tooth and will be out tonight. ... Knicks center/forward Ronny Turiaf (left knee) didn't play Friday night. This was the third consecutive game Turiaf will miss with the injury. D'Antoni said Turiaf won't play until he is 100 percent healthy.
