The New Orleans Hornets are having no trouble scoring points after tipoff. Knocking down shots after halftime is where they're running into problems.

The Hornets again hope to fix their second-half scoring woes and avoid losing for the fifth time in six games Wednesday night when they host the Charlotte Bobcats, who hope Gerald Wallace can play only days after getting injured in a scary fall.

New Orleans (12-5) opened this season as one of the league's hottest teams, winning 11 of its first 12 games. Balanced scoring throughout games helped the Hornets during that stretch, as they averaged 47.8 first-half points and 49.7 after the break.

New Orleans has since become much more aggressive in the opening half but has been unable to carry that momentum through halftime.

In dropping four of their last five, the Hornets are averaging 54.2 first-half points on 53.3 percent shooting, compared to 38.4 points on 39.3 percent shooting in the final two quarters. Three-time All-Star Chris Paul is averaging 5.2 points and hitting 25.8 percent from the field in the second half of his last six games after averaging 9.5 on 51.4 percent shooting in the first 11.

Paul and the Hornets are coming off Monday's 95-89 loss to Oklahoma City. New Orleans was outscored 34-21 over the game's final 14 minutes, one night after being outscored 55-34 in the second half of a 109-95 loss to San Antonio.

"I thought we competed our tails off on the road in a tough back-to-back," coach Monty Williams said. "The ball didn't go down. It happens in this league."

Three of the Hornets' last four losses have come on the road, but four of their next five games are at New Orleans Arena, where they're 7-1.

New Orleans had won its first five home games against the Bobcats before suffering a 104-103 loss April 7. Paul missed that game with a ligament tear in his right middle finger.

Charlotte (6-11), loser of three straight on the road, is hoping Wallace will play after he was hurt while getting fouled on a drive to the basket late in Saturday's 104-101 loss to Milwaukee.

The Bobcats originally diagnosed Wallace with a hyperextended left elbow but have changed the injury to a contusion after he received ice treatment and electric stimulation Sunday.

"It actually isn't as bad as it looked," Wallace said. "My elbow is kind of tender, but other than that I'm pretty much good."

Wallace, an All-Star last season, is averaging 17.2 points and a team-leading 8.2 rebounds. Charlotte is 4-1 when he grabs at least 10 boards.

He's second on the team in scoring behind Stephen Jackson, who was ejected with 7:31 left in the first quarter Saturday in the Bobcats' third loss in four games. Jackson, averaging 18.1 points, was held scoreless for the first time since Dec. 2, 2006, against Denver.

On Tuesday, the veteran guard was suspended one game for verbally abusing an official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection.

That could prove to be a costly suspension for the Bobcats. Jackson averaged 27.5 points in two games against the Hornets last season, his second most versus any opponent.

D.J. Augustin helped pick up the slack in Jackson's absence with a season high-tying 26 points. Augustin, a New Orleans native, is becoming more involved in Charlotte's offense, averaging 17.0 points in his last five games after averaging 10.7 on 35.7 percent shooting in his previous six.

West leads Hornets past Bobcats, 89-73

NEW ORLEANS(AP) David West loves to box and Monty Williams is wondering if the forward's offseason hobby is helping him flourish in the first-year coach's defense-oriented system.

West had 22 points, two steals and two blocked shots, and New Orleans dominated the fourth quarter in an 89-73 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.

"He has such good hands," Williams said of West's presence on the defensive end. "I don't know if it comes from boxing or just having big hands, but he does a good job of contesting shots."

The Hornets entered the game having lost four of five and two straight in which they blew fourth-quarter leads. Williams and his staff saw late-game defensive lapses becoming a problem and worked to address it after Monday night's loss at Oklahoma City.

The Bobcats scored only four points over the last 9:04, during which the Hornets put together an 18-4 run that turned what had been a close game with 16 lead changes into a lopsided affair in the end.

"We just wanted to lock down, maybe sacrifice a little offense to get teams under control in that fourth quarter defensively," West said. "We've got to be a defensive basketball team. I thought we just had that mindset tonight. We were going to try to be solid, not a whole lot of gambling and making stuff up on the fly. Just stay committed to the game plan, especially defensively."

New Orleans blocked eight shots, had seven steals and outrebounded the Bobcats 42-38.

Emeka Okafor had 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks for New Orleans. Chris Paul dished out 14 assists, scored nine points on seven shots and collected four steals. Trevor Ariza and Willie Green each scored 10.

Gerald Wallace led Charlotte with 18 points. Boris Diaw and D.J. Augustin each added 13 points and Tyrus Thomas had 10 assists.

The game was tight until the final minutes. New Orleans led 43-42 at the break, but only became the halftime leader after officials examined a replay of Diaw's 3-pointer with 2:02 left in the second quarter and ruled his shot left his hands just after the shot clock had expired.

Charlotte was as close as 71-69 when Kwame Brown hit a 15-foot jumper with 9:05 to go. The Hornets then scored the next five points as they began to pull away.

After Augustin's driving floater pulled Charlotte to 76-71 with 3:57 to go, West came back with a short floater in traffic as he was fouled. Soon after, Ariza hit a 3 and West added another short floater to make it 84-73 - the first double-digit lead for either team - with 1:48 remaining.

"It's the same old, same old," said Bobcats coach Larry Brown, whose club has lost four of five and two straight. "We didn't match their intensity. They have a couple of finishers. West and Chris Paul took over. They defended great. They made every play and we didn't."

The Hornets (13-5), who entered the game leading the NBA in points allowed (92.4), now have held 15 of their 18 opponents to fewer than 100 points. New Orleans also forced 16 turnovers - 11 in the second half - marking the seventh time the Hornets have forced 15-plus turnovers in a game.

"I guess we waited until the fourth quarter to defend like we're capable of," Paul said. "It's a good sign for us to finally close out a game. The last few games we've had trouble holding on at the end."

NOTES: Players who ranked third, fourth and fifth in active consecutive games played streaks were on the court. Hornets G Jarrett Jack, who ranks third, played his 307th straight, while Diaw, who ranks fourth, played his 285th and Okafor, who ranks fifth, played his 275th. ... The Bobcats had two south Louisiana natives in the game, with Augustin being from New Orleans and Thomas from Baton Rouge. A Hornets official said together they combined for more than 100 tickets. ... Announced attendance was 10,866, marking the Hornets' sixth straight home crowd of less than 15,000.

THE FACTS: David West scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as the New Orleans Hornets defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 89-73 on Wednesday night at the New Orleans Arena. The win for New Orleans ends a losing slide as the Hornets had lost four of their last five games after such a fast start.

THE STAT: Charlotte was held to its lowest point total of the season by a significant amount with 75 points. That was mainly because the Hornets held the Bobcats to only 11 points in the fourth quarter. The previous low for the Bobcats was 85 points in a win against New Jersey on Nov. 3.

QUOTABLE: "We just wanted to put together a complete game. We'd been giving up what coach said something like 25 or 28 points per game in the fourth quarter. We wanted to lock down and maybe we sacrifice some offense. We had to get them under control in the fourth quarter on defense."
-- West on an improved fourth quarter compared to the last few games.

TURNING POINT: West hit a seven-footer with 3:37 left in the game despite a foul by the Bobcats' Tyrus Thomas. West also hit the free throw to give the Hornets 79-71. The game had been back and forth for most of the night with 16 lead changes. The West scoring sequence stopped that trend for good.

HOT: Hornets center Emeka Okafor was solid against his former team, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in nearly 38 minutes of action.

NOT: Hornets forward Trevor Ariza struggled mightily despite the win going 4-for-15 from the floor, including 2-for-8 from 3-point range, to finish up with 10 points.

INSIDE THE ARENA: NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Rickey Jackson sat courtside literally two seats away from Hornets minority owner Gary Chouest.

NOTABLE: Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson served his one-game suspension Wednesday night against the Hornets. Forward Dominic McGuire started in his place and struggled going 1-for-8 from the floor for only two points. ... Gerald Wallace led the Bobcats with 18 points. ... Chris Paul only scored nine points, but he tallied 14 assists and five steals for the Hornets. ... The Bobcats thought they had a 45-43 halftime lead, but the officials took away a Boris Diaw 3-pointer from earlier in the second quarter after reviewing that Diaw shot the ball after the 24-second clock had expired. ... The announced crowd for Wednesday night's game was a season-low 10,866. It's one of the smallest crowds in more than two years at the New Orleans Arena.
