Spurs-Warriors Preview

After their 12-game winning streak was snapped, the San Antonio Spurs bounced back in impressive fashion. They could be in good position to start another run - while also extending one - when they face the Golden State Warriors.

San Antonio has outscored Golden State by 18.8 points in winning the last eight matchups, with the teams set to meet Tuesday night at Oracle Arena.

The Spurs (14-2) sit alone atop the Western Conference and are the only NBA team yet to lose on the road. San Antonio is averaging 105.3 points in away games, among the most in the league.

Manu Ginobili led the way with 23 points in a 109-95 victory at New Orleans on Sunday. San Antonio battled back from a 17-point halftime deficit after falling to Dallas 103-94 on Friday - its first loss since Oct. 30.

The Spurs limited the Hornets to 34 points in the second half and scored a season-high 37 in the fourth quarter.

"For some strange reason we've been a second-half type of team - give up points in the beginning then lock down defense in the second half," guard George Hill said. "If we can play defense the way we did in the second half … I think it's going to be a scary year for everybody."

Ginobili is averaging a team-best 21.6 points - 6.4 above his career average.

Tim Duncan had averaged 11.2 points in his previous nine games before scoring 21 on Sunday. San Antonio has gone 39-5 against the Warriors with Duncan in the lineup.

Golden State (8-9) ended a five-game losing streak with a 104-94 win at Minnesota on Saturday night, thanks in large part to Dorell Wright's impressive effort from 3-point range.

Wright, averaging 7.0 points in his career, set a franchise record with nine 3-pointers while scoring a career-high 30. He has averaged 21.3 points in his last three games.

"It's been 10 times better than what I thought it would be," Wright said of joining the Spurs after playing his first six seasons with Miami. "I'm enjoying myself. We've struggled the past few games, but I think we're going to get back on the right track when we get everybody healthy."

David Lee, who leads Golden State with 10.7 rebounds per contest, returned to the lineup after missing eight games with a lacerated elbow. He had 10 points and six boards, and the Warriors improved to 7-2 with their top rebounder in the lineup.

"First of all, I know we can get some wins and beat some teams," Lee said. "I told you I wanted to be judged on wins and losses and so far that's going pretty good when I'm in there. I just need to find a way to stay healthy and keep helping our team."

Monta Ellis certainly did all he could to help the Warriors end their slide against the Spurs in the last three meetings. He averaged 38.7 points in those contests, and has scored 30.0 points a game at home this season.

Ellis had 26 points and 10 assists Saturday.

Golden State is averaging 107.1 points at Oracle Arena.

Duncan's triple double paces Spurs past Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif.(AP) Tim Duncan has lobbied Spurs coach Gregg Popovich numerous times to play point guard in the past. Each time he's been denied.

Don't expect Popovich to have a change of mind any time soon, even after San Antonio's All-Star forward matched his career-high for assists while recording his first triple double in nearly two years.

Duncan had 15 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists, Manu Ginobili added 27 points and the Spurs kept rolling along with the NBA's best record following a 118-98 win over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.

"He's been the heart and soul of our program for a long time," Popovich said of Duncan. "He's Tim Duncan, that's what he does. He's where it all begins. After all this time, we probably take him for granted."

Duncan, who recently moved past David Robinson to become the Spurs' career scoring leader, shot just 6 of 15 from the field but helped San Antonio's offense keep rolling by dishing the ball to his teammates. Duncan also matched his season-high for rebounds.

It's Duncan's first triple double since May 29, 2008 when he had 19 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. The Spurs lost that game, which denied them a shot to defend their NBA title that year.

They didn't waste Duncan's huge game this time.

"I couldn't make a shot so I figured I'd pass it and let somebody else make a shot," Duncan said. "I wasn't trying to do it. Just the flow of the game and the plays that were being called."

Duncan thought his night was done with 2:34 left in the third quarter. He went to the bench needing one assist for the triple double with San Antonio holding a 16-point lead and the Spurs playing in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Wednesday.

Popovich put Duncan back in with 8:49 remaining in the fourth after Golden State made a brief run. Duncan got the assist on a pass to George Hill, two minutes later.

As for Duncan lobbying Popovich for a chance to play point, don't count on it.

"I've been doing it for 14 years now and it's never happened," Duncan said. "So it's no time to start now. It's not going to happen."

San Antonio, which won its ninth straight against Golden State, improved its NBA-best record to 15-2.

Stephen Curry scored 32 points and David Lee added 18 points and seven rebounds for Golden State (8-10). The Warriors have lost eight of their last 10.

"When you don't play your best ball against an experienced team like San Antonio, there's a reason their record is the way it is," Lee said. "They don't necessarily do it with all athleticism and power and length. They do it with smarts and they take advantage of any mistake that you make."

Playing the front end of a back-to-back, the Spurs led by 10 points at halftime and 18 in the third quarter before cruising over the final 12 minutes. The Warriors made one brief run, closing to 100-88 on a Curry 3-pointer with 6:49 remaining, but that was it.

Hill and Tony Parker scored on back-to-back trips down the floor and Duncan added a dunk off an assist from Ginobili to make it 106-88.

The Spurs finished November with a 14-1 record and remained undefeated in eight road games.

Ginobili has been a big reason.

The veteran guard is off to one of the best starts of his career and has been particularly efficient over the last week. He is averaging 26.4 points over his last five games and is shooting 51.3 percent from the floor during that stretch.

"Manu's been really scorching it," Duncan said. "We know he's got that capability but it's still fun to sit there and watch him do it. He's feeling good right now so we're going to roll with him."

Ginobili scored 16 of his points in the third quarter when the Spurs built an 91-73 lead.

Tempers flared late in the third after Richard Jefferson's alley oop dunk gave the Spurs an 82-66 lead. Jefferson appeared to land on Lee, who took exception and shoved Jefferson. Antonio McDyess stepped in and argued with Lee as players from both teams came rushing in before referees restored order.

The officials met briefly then assessed a double technical to Lee and Jefferson.

It was that kind of night for the Warriors, who committed 16 turnovers and were outrebounded 50-44.

Lee, playing in only his second game since missing eight games with an elbow infection, tried to give Golden State a lift but the Warriors couldn't match San Antonio's depth.

Only four Golden State players reached double figures.

San Antonio led most of the first quarter but fell behind 26-23 after a 10-3 run by Golden State. The Spurs then scored seven points over the final 35 seconds, getting a 3-pointer from Gary Neal followed by four free throws from Ginobili.

Ginobili was fouled by Monta Ellis while attempting a 3 then got an additional free throw when Ellis slapped his hands together in frustration and was hit with a technical foul.

Ginobili made three more free throws early in the second quarter and Jefferson scored on an alley oop pass from Parker to help the Spurs push their lead to 49-37. Jefferson later added a one-handed dunk and Duncan scored on a three-point play as San Antonio took a 58-48 halftime edge.

DeJuan Blair had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs.

Notes: Golden State F Ekpe Udoh, who has not played this season because of a wrist injury, was cleared for contact and worked out one-on-out with assistant coach Calbert Cheaney before the game. ... The Warriors last win against the Spurs came on Jan. 7, 2008.

THE FACTS: Tim Duncan put together his third career regular-season triple-double, recording 15 points, 18 rebounds and a career-high-tying 11 assists to help the San Antonio Spurs stay perfect on the road with a 118-98 victory against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. Manu Ginobili added 27 points for the Spurs, who are 8-0 away from home this season. The Warriors wasted a 32-point night by Stephen Curry in suffering their ninth consecutive loss to San Antonio.

THE STAT: Individual plus-minus stats for single games can be at times unreliable, but Ginobili's stunning plus-31 in just 30:26 of action accurately summed up the ultra-efficient havoc he wreaked on the Warriors. In addition to his 27 points, Ginobili went 8-for-13 from the floor, 8-for-9 from the line and added six rebounds and five steals.

TURNING POINT: Duncan thought sure his night was done when he checked out with 2:34 left in the third quarter and the Spurs leading by 16 points. But San Antonio couldn't quite put Golden State away -- until Duncan came back with 9:04 left in the fourth quarter. The 12-time All-Star keyed a 13-7 run with four rebounds, two assists and a driving dunk to remove all doubt.

HOT: Ginobili blew the game open almost single-handedly with a 16-point third quarter. He opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers over the too-loose defense of Monta Ellis, and never stopped tormenting the Warriors' defense from that point. It was Ginobili's fifth consecutive game with 23 points or more points.

QUOTABLE II: "He's been carrying us. He's been playing great, shooting the 3-ball great. He's just in his rhythm right now. We know he's got that capability, but it's still fun to sit there and watch him do it, and use every trick he has. He's feeling good right now, so we're going to roll with him." -- Duncan on Ginobili

NOT: Warriors forward Dorell Wright, who came into the game fresh off a 9-for-12 performance behind the 3-point arc in Minnesota on Saturday, was thoroughly stymied by a Spurs defense that keyed on his shooting from the opening tip. Wright finished 1-for-5 on 3-pointers and had 13 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: DeJuan Blair, who was limited to just more than 36 minutes of play over the Spurs' previous four games, rewarded patient owners with 16 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

GOOD MOVE: With a back-to-back looming Wednesday against the Clippers, Duncan may have been surprised to find himself inserted back in the game alongside fellow star Tony Parker during the fourth quarter. But Popovich made sure to secure the win in hand rather than running the risk of blowing a big lead against a potent Golden State lineup.

NOTABLE: Duncan's previous regular-season triple-doubles took place on March 14, 2003 (24 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists against the Clippers) and March 25, 2000 (17 points, 17 rebounds, 11 assists against Cleveland). . . . Interestingly (and perhaps unsurprisingly), Duncan has only three triple-doubles in 994 career regular-season games, but four such performances in 170 playoff appearances. . . . Ekpe Udoh, the Warriors' first-round pick this summer, has been cleared to fully participate in practice. The No. 6 overall selection has been on the shelf since July, when he injured his left wrist badly enough to require surgery to fix. "All he's been able to do is his moves by himself, and he's pretty good at that right now," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "He hasn't missed a shot, hasn't had to foul, hasn't had a shot blocked. Good moves, (for) 1-on-0." All joking aside, the progress means Udoh is in line to beat the worst-case scenario of a post-All-Star-break return. . . . Golden State forward Brandan Wright sat out again with a lower back strain. He's missed eight straight games and is expected to be re-evaluated in the next couple of days.
