Nets-Knicks Preview

While the New York Knicks have climbed back to .500 thanks to their recent success on the road, that hasn't translated at home despite a favorable schedule.

The Knicks will try for their third home win when they face the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night.

New York (9-9) has won six of seven, including a 125-116 double-overtime victory at Detroit on Sunday. All six of those wins have come against teams with losing records and five have come on the road.

"We are just showing the sort of composure that we have and that we are growing since day one," said Raymond Felton, who overcame a stomach illness to finish with 23 points and 11 assists. "If we continue to play that way and get better at home, I think that we will be okay this season."

It was another big game for Amare Stoudemire, who scored 37 points to go along with 15 rebounds and seven assists. Stoudemire is averaging 27.1 points and 9.7 boards in the last seven games.

"He's great," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Just his persona and his aura is really good. ... It's not about making mistakes or missing last shots, you're always going to do that, but just being there with the guys every second is huge."

Stoudemire and the Knicks will try to carry over that success to Madison Square Garden, where they are 2-5 this season, including a 99-90 loss to Atlanta on Saturday that snapped a five-game winning streak.

The Hawks are the only team which New York has hosted that currently has a winning record, but the Knicks are averaging more than seven points per game more on the road than at home.

Felton is averaging a career-high 18.1 points but only 15.0 at home. Danilo Gallinari is averaging 11.9 points at MSG while making 23.3 percent from 3-point range, compared to 18.1 points and 43.1 percent on the road.

The Knicks will have a good chance to better their home record against the Nets (6-11), who have lost five straight on the road.

New Jersey is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since opening the season 2-0. The Nets are coming off a 98-96 win over Portland on Sunday after losing their previous two games.

After being held below 90 points in those two defeats, the Nets overcome a slow first half and finished the game shooting 52.5 percent. Devin Harris scored 25 points, including a late 3-pointer to give New Jersey a 92-89 lead.

"Devin was the one who really had the chance to spark us," said forward Kris Humphries, who had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. "I think the way we came back shows some growth. We've had some tough losses this year and we didn't want another one."

Harris is averaging 22.8 points in his last four games after a four-game stretch in which he averaged 12.3. He shot 7 of 12 on Sunday and had eight assists.

Harris scored 31 points the last time New Jersey faced the Knicks - a 113-93 win at MSG on March 6. The victory earned the Nets a split of the season series.

Knicks pull away after Harris goes down, beat Nets

NEW YORK(AP) The New York Knicks tried to say that 19 games is too early for celebration.

For this franchise, though, it's awfully late in the season to still have a winning record.

Amare Stoudemire scored 35 points and the Knicks broke open a close game right after New Jersey lost point guard Devin Harris to injury, beating the Nets 111-100 on Tuesday night.

Mired in a franchise-worst stretch of nine straight losing seasons, the Knicks improved to 10-9, the latest in a season they've been above .500 since they were 16-15 on Jan. 4, 2005.

"Any kind of step forward, we're taking," coach Mike D'Antoni said with a laugh before trying to downplay the team's record. "We are playing better and we can see we can get a lot better than this."

Wilson Chandler added 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who won for the seventh time in eight games. Raymond Felton finished with 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

A perennial 50-game winner in Phoenix, Stoudemire wasn't too excited about a 10th victory.

"I think it's just a matter of us just continuing to play, continuing to get better, understand that we're a work in progress," Stoudemire said. "We have great talent, we're a young team and it takes a lot of studying in order to get to where we are now and we have to keep going."

Harris limped to the back with a left knee injury after he was hurt on Chandler's basket that snapped a 65-all tie midway through the third quarter. That was part of a 14-2 spurt that gave the Knicks a 10-point lead, and they were never really challenged from there.

Brook Lopez scored a season-high 36 points for the Nets and Jordan Farmar had 17, trying to pick up the load after Harris was lost.

Harris, tied for the Nets' scoring lead with 18.2 points per game, was hurt when teammate Kris Humphries landed on the back of his leg trying to block Chandler's fast-break layup. He remained on the court for a few minutes, then limped to the locker room with a Nets trainer.

Chandler then made two free throws, and after a follow shot by Lopez, the Knicks ran off eight in a row, with Stoudemire's dunk off a pass from Felton extending it to 77-67 with 3:15 remaining in the quarter.

"Oh man, a big game changer. Devin is a guy that we rely on heavily," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "In the sense it's kind of like if they lose Stoudemire. On a lot of nights Devin's been one of our top two players. It was tough to overcome it."

Harris said he would have an MRI on Wednesday but didn't think the injury was too bad.

"I'm not that worried," he said. "Doctor says it feels pretty stable. Just want to rule out any tears."

The Knicks outscored the Nets 33-15 in the third, taking an 88-73 lead to the final quarter, and Stoudemire kept it from getting close in the last 12 minutes by scoring 10 points for his second straight game with 35 or more.

Johnson cited Stoudemire as a reason the Knicks are currently ahead of the Nets as both try to build the top team in the area. They made the first two pitches to LeBron James in July and either would eagerly take Carmelo Anthony if he leaves Denver, but only New York has been able to land a superstar when it signed the former All-Star forward from Phoenix.

Both will play in New York once the Nets move to Brooklyn in 2012, but for now their rivalry mostly exists off the court. The Nets put a billboard featuring owner Mikhail Prokhorov and part-owner Jay-Z near Madison Square Garden, and the Knicks responded by putting Stoudemire on an ad near the site of the Barclays Center will stand in Brooklyn.

An ad ran during MSG Network's telecast of the Knicks' victory at Detroit on Sunday advertising this game by telling the Nets, "You can walk like us, you can talk like us, but you ain't never gonna be like us."

The Nets fired back in an e-mailed statement from Prokhorov on Tuesday that read: "I don't think we want to be like the Knicks. I think we'd more like to resemble the Lakers."

But both D'Antoni and Johnson dismissed the idea of a rivalry until it involves postseason meetings between the teams.

"You don't really get a rivalry unless you're in the playoffs," D'Antoni said. "It doesn't work during the regular season when you're (saying), 'Oh boy, we knocked them out of ninth place."'

Lopez scored 15 points in the first quarter, but the Knicks led 30-28. The Nets had a 58-55 lead at the break.

Notes: Starting Knicks center Ronny Turiaf was out with a sore left knee. D'Antoni said he hopes Turiaf will play Friday when the Knicks visit New Orleans. ... NBA Commissioner David Stern attended the game. ... The Knicks presented the "City Spirit" award for November to 5-year-old Sayam Kamal, who helped save the lives of five people from a fire that broke out in his Queens house. The award is named in honor of Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African-American to play for the Knicks.

THE STAT: The Knicks were 25-for-29 from the free-throw line. They entered play fourth in the league in FTA (28.72) and fifth in free-throw percentage (.799).

TURNING POINT: The Knicks rattled off a 14-2 run, including eight unanswered points, to turn a 65-63 deficit into a 77-67 lead late in the third quarter. The Knicks outscored the Nets 33-15 in the third period, getting 12 from Stoudemire and eight from Felton.

HOT: The Knicks had no answer for Nets center Brook Lopez, who scored 36 points, one shy of his career high 37 set last March against Detroit.

HOTTER: Stoudemire scored 30 or more points for the second straight game. He had 37 in the double-overtime win Sunday in Detroit and has scored 30 or more four times this season.
