The Utah Jazz are proving they belong among the Western Conference elite. They haven't resembled that when visiting the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

Coming off two of their more impressive performances of the season, the Jazz look to avoid another letdown against the Clippers at Staples Center on Sunday.

Utah (12-5) has won 12 of 15 after opening the season with consecutive losses.

The club has turned up the defensive intensity and been very effective from 3-point range during its current four-game win streak. Utah has held opponents to 90.0 points per game while shooting 44.1 percent from beyond the arc in that span.

The Jazz overcame a 19-point deficit to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 102-96 on Friday in the first meeting between the teams since Utah was swept out of the West semifinals last season. The Jazz's performance Friday, which was aided by going 7 for 17 from long range, came two nights after beating New Orleans 105-87.

"It proved that we can play with the best of them," said center Al Jefferson, who scored 20 points with eight rebounds against the Lakers after getting 23 and 10, respectively, versus the Hornets.

Judging by each team's record this season, Utah's momentum wouldn't appear to be in much danger against the Clippers (3-14). The Jazz beat Los Angeles 109-107 in double overtime at home on Nov. 6, improving to 18-8 in the last 26 meetings. However, all of those defeats have come in the most recent 13 visits to Staples Center, and by an average of 12.7 points.

Deron Williams struggled with his shot in two road meetings against the Clippers last season, scoring 13 points in each contest while making 9 of 28 from the field and totaling 24 assists.

The All-Star guard didn't have much trouble against the Clippers earlier this month, scoring 30 points. He's also entering this matchup with some momentum, shooting 19 of 32 to total 55 points, 23 assists and seven steals over the last two games.

Jefferson, acquired in a trade from Minnesota during the summer, could help the Jazz avoid another letdown at Staples Center. He's averaging 22.0 points and 12.2 rebounds in his last five road matchups against Los Angeles.

Jefferson scored 18 points and grabbed 10 boards Nov. 6.

Returning home may have the Clippers feeling slightly better.

They're 3-6 as hosts, compared to 0-8 on the road. Los Angeles' road struggles showed few signs of slowing Friday, as it lost 116-108 to Phoenix while committing 16 turnovers.

The Clippers rank near the bottom of the league with 16.6 turnovers per game.

Guard Eric Gordon and forward-center Blake Griffin continue to be bright spots, as the Clippers' top scorers with averages of 24.5 points and 19.3, respectively.

Gordon is averaging 29.0 points over the last three games after scoring a season-high 32 against the Suns. He had 27 points in Utah earlier this month, while Griffin was held to 16 while collecting 17 rebounds.

Griffin, the team leader with 11.4 boards per game, continues to be a force with averages of 28.3 points and 14.3 rebounds over the last four games.

Williams leads Jazz to 109-97 win over Clippers

LOS ANGELES(AP) Jerry Sloan has survived 23 years as an NBA coach because he knows how to get the most from his players, and provides a system that allows them to succeed.

And when one player goes down, another steps up.

Deron Williams had 26 points and nine assists, and the Jazz got significant contributions from reserves C.J. Miles and Francisco Elson down the stretch to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-97 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory. Utah was coming off a 102-96 home win over the NBA champion Lakers in which they rallied from 19 points down.

"In this system with these type of players, you've got to shine," Elson said. "Jerry Sloan is one of the best coaches in the game and he has that winning mentality, so you want to come out and do well. And when he puts you in the game, you've got to perform. Miles was hitting his shots and we were making great plays, passing the ball to each other and finding the open man. When you pass to each other, confidence builds."

Miles scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, helping the defending Northwest Division champions win for the 13th time in 16 games after opening the season with one-sided losses to Denver and Phoenix. And they've done it without center Mehmet Okur, who has been sidelined because of a torn Achilles tendon he sustained during the playoffs.

"Our guys have played pretty well together and our bench has given us a tremendous lift to put us in a position to be able to win a lot of those games," Sloan said. "Those guys have given us a great deal of life to fight back, and it's been fun. From C.J.'s standpoint, he was able to make some really tough shots."

Rookie Blake Griffin had 35 points on 13 for 21 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out seven assists for the Clippers, who have lost nine of the past 10 meetings with the Jazz. Eric Gordon added 21 points and nine assists.

Griffin, averaging 20.2 points and 11.6 boards through his first 18 games, is off to a strong start in his bid to become the third player in franchise history to earn rookie of the year honors and first since Bob McAdoo and Ernie DeGregorio won the award back-to-back with the Buffalo Braves in 1973 and 1974. The double-double was Griffin's 11th.

"He's very athletic, and this is a league where athleticism is a big deal," Elson said. "People look up to him already because he's so explosive and he has a lot of talent."

Griffin scored 21 points on 9 for 13 shooting in the first half and the Clippers broke off an 11-0 run late in the second quarter to take a 60-52 lead at the break.

"It seemed like we couldn't stop anybody in the first half," Williams said. "They were hitting shots from everywhere. ... We woke up in the second half, executed better and didn't give up."

The Jazz opened the third quarter with a 13-2 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer by Raja Bell that put them in front 65-62 with 7:04 left in the quarter. Then their bench went to work. Elson made a fastbreak layup, Miles hit a 3-pointer and Elson converted a three-point play for a 92-78 lead with 7:40 left. The Clippers got no closer than nine points after that.

"They ended up playing good defense, but we stopped ourselves," Gordon said. "I think we had a stretch in the third quarter where we missed three or four layups. They got a few blocked shots where we could have converted and didn't, and that turned into fastbreak points for them. And when a team gets that kind of momentum, it's hard to stop."

Utah was whistled for three technicals during a 7:10 span of the first half - on Bell, Earl Watson and Ronnie Price. But Williams, Utah's leading scorer this season, escaped technicals on two separate occasions despite animated conversations with officials after the whistle.

"The only guy who should get technicals is the coach," Sloan said.

Clippers center Chris Kaman missed his 10th straight game because of a sprained left knee. Point guard Baron Davis tested his sore left knee briefly before the game, but missed his seventh game in a row and 13th in the last 14. Davis played only 10 minutes during a loss at New Orleans on Nov. 9.

Notes: The hiring of Vinny Del Negro in July represented the 13th head coaching change the Clippers have made since Sloan became Utah's coach in December 1988, the most of any team in the league. ... Gordon led the Clippers in scoring in seven of their previous eight games. The only exception was Nov. 20, when his 25-point effort was overshadowed by Griffin's 44 against the New York Knicks. ... Since signing Davis as a free agent before the 2008-09 season, the Clippers are 5-24 when he hasn't played. ... Utah has held 10 of its last 11 opponents under 100 points.

THE FACTS: All five starters scored in double figures Sunday afternoon and C.J. Miles had 16 points off the bench as the Utah Jazz won their fifth straight game, 109-97, against the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

QUOTABLE: "We just had to give the ball to someone who was open. You don't have to shoot it every time you get it. You pass the ball and you have a better chance of getting a high-percentage shot."

THE STAT: After scoring 60 points in the first half, the Clippers were held to 14 in the decisive third quarter against a stingy zone defense. They committed seven turnovers during that span, shot 5-for-19 from the field and put the Jazz in the bonus with four minutes remaining.

TURNING POINT: The Clippers took a 10-point lead in the opening minute of the third quarter on a bank shot by Blake Griffin. Los Angeles then got fancy on an ensuing 3-on-1 break when rookie point guard Eric Bledsoe tried an ally-oop pass to Griffin, but the pass was off target and the Jazz followed with a 13-0 run to put them back ahead.

QUOTABLE II: "They were killing us with their offense, getting the kind of shots they wanted. Then we slowed them down a little bit and they missed some shots."

HOT: The Jazz shot 58.6 percent from the floor for the game. Miles was 6-for-7 off the bench, Deron Williams was 8-for-14 with a team-high 26 points and Paul Millsap finished 7-for-11 for 15 points.

NOT: Brian Cook had been steadily gaining minutes off the bench for the Clippers, but his shoot-first style didn't work against the Jazz, as he missed all six field-goal attempts and had the crowd begging for him to come out of the game while he spelled Griffin in the fourth quarter.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Clippers leading scorer Eric Gordon salvaged a decent game after going the first 21 minutes of the second half without a field goal. Gordon, who came in seventh in the league in scoring average (24.5), finished with 21 points and nine assists.

GOOD MOVE: Utah coach Jerry Sloan had Francisco Elson guard Griffin for much of the second half and he managed to slow the high-flying rookie enough to allow the Jazz to pull away. Elson played the entire fourth quarter and finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists in a season-high 21 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro played Griffin the entire third quarter, forcing him to go with Cook in the early stretches of the fourth. The Jazz managed to stretch their lead from five points to 10 while Griffin was out of the game.

ROOKIE WATCH: Griffin continues to be worth the price of admission, as he finished with a game-high 35 points, 14 rebounds and even managed to distribute seven assists. During an 11-0 run at the end of the first half that helped the Clippers to an eight-point lead, he had seven points and two assists.

NOTABLE: The Clippers shot 70.6 percent in the opening quarter, their highest percentage for a quarter this season. Unfortunately, the Jazz shot 63.6 and only trailed, 32-30.
