The New York Knicks haven't defeated a team with a winning record during their current run. They get a chance to change that when they face an Atlanta Hawks club that hasn't beaten an opponent over .500 this season.

The Knicks look to win six straight for the first time in nearly five years when they host the Hawks on Saturday.

New York's five consecutive victories have come against teams that are a combined 19-41 heading into Friday's games.

The Knicks (8-8) finished a home-and-home sweep of Charlotte with a 99-95 road win Wednesday. New York's last six-game winning streak was from Jan. 2-13, 2006.

"Winning five straight feels great," said forward Amare Stoudemire, averaging 25.8 points with 8.6 rebounds and 3.0 blocks during the streak. "But being 8-8 and .500 is something that we've got to improve on. We still have a lot of work to do."

The Knicks may want to start at the defensive end. Despite leading the league with 7.9 blocks per game - 4.2 more than last season, when it was last in the NBA - New York is giving up 107.1 points per game on 47.8 percent shooting.

The Knicks, 2-4 at Madison Square Garden, will face a Hawks team that has a Eastern Conference-best 5-2 road record. Atlanta's 104.0-point average in road contests is among the highest in the league.

Coach Larry Drew's club is shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from 3-point range away from Atlanta.

The Hawks (9-7) snapped a three-game slide with a 116-96 win over Washington on Thursday. The victory was Atlanta's most lopsided of 2010-11.

"We hadn't had a game like this all season," forward Josh Smith said after scoring 20 points with a season-best 14 rebounds and two blocks. "We have to make a statement every time we play a division team. We just have to get wins at this point."

The Hawks also need leading scorer Joe Johnson to continue to shoot better. The four-time All-Star went 8 for 16 and scored a team-high 21 points Thursday, but averaged 12.2 on 31.8 percent shooting in the previous five games.

Johnson scored 24.5 points per game with 6.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists as Atlanta lost three of four to New York last season.

The Knicks have been getting strong play out of point guard Raymond Felton, who had 23 points with a season-best 13 assists against his former teammates Wednesday. Felton is averaging career highs of 17.8 points and 8.0 assists in his first season with New York.

Coming off his ninth double-double with 15 points and 13 boards, Al Horford will look for another big game against the Knicks. He has averaged 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in five career games in New York, though his last one there ended in disappointment.

On March 8, Horford's short jumper was waved off after replays showed it came after the final buzzer in a 99-98 loss.

Danilo Gallinari scored a game-high 27 points in that matchup for the Knicks, winners of 19 of 25 against the Hawks at MSG.

Crawford leads Hawks to 99-90 win over Knicks

NEW YORK(AP) Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew was looking for a way to spark up his team, and lashed out at them for their lack of energy at the start of games after losing at home to Boston and the next day at New Jersey.

"It's called corrective criticism. I'm going to challenge our team every single game we play," Drew said. "We're going to have some nights when we can't put it in the ocean, can't make a shot. (But) there should never be an excuse why we can't come out every single night and play with a high level of energy."

The message must have gotten across.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead before holding off New York 99-90 on Saturday, snapping the Knicks' five-game winning streak. Atlanta has now won two straight since a modest three-game skid.

Former Knicks guard Jamal Crawford scored a game-high 21 points off the bench and was helped out by 17 points and nine rebounds from Al Horford, and 14 points from Mike Bibby. Josh Smith added Marvin Williams had 13 each for the Hawks.

Crawford, who was on the last Knicks team that won sixth straight during the 2006 season, entered the game with 4:43 remaining in the first quarter and gave Atlanta a 24-14 lead with a jumper. He then stole the ball from Raymond Felton and immediately hit a 3-pointer, then moments later scored on a layup.

"It's always fun to come back here," said Crawford, who spent four-plus seasons playing at Madison Square Garden. "After spending most of my career here, it always feels good to come back. To be able to be victorious against a team that's been playing great - they won five in a row - we were aware of that. It's just fun to come out and get a win."

The Knicks started off slow in the first half, making just 15 of 37 shots from the field, although Amar'e Stoudemire got to the foul line and scored 12 of his 24 points in the half.

"We had no energy from the start. With these early games, sometimes it happens that way," said Stoudemire, who had 10 rebounds for his sixth 20-10 effort of the season. "We can't make excuses. We have to be mentally ready for these early games and we were not."

New York trailed by 18 at the half and got within four in the fourth quarter on a driving lay-up by Wilson Chandler and a free throw after the score. The Hawks then reeled off seven straight points on a 3-pointer by Crawford, a hook shot by Horford, and a turnaround jumper by Horford that made it 82-71 with 9:35 left.

"The energy was there. That's the consistency I've always talked about so that we can be a better team," Horford said. "We knew they were going to come back and get in the game. I think what was key for us was that we remained calm. We kept playing, kept defending and we were able to close out the game at the end."

New York forward Ronny Turiaf left after the first half with a sore left knee and didn't return. He said simply, "I don't know," when asked about his ailing knee.

Raymond Felton added 18 points and rookie Landry Fields had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

"Everybody has slip ups and we had a slip up. We are not satisfied with it but it happens," Felton said.

NOTES: Maurice Evans had 10 points off the bench for Atlanta, which is an Eastern Conference-best 6-2 on the road this season. ... Larry Brown was the coach for the Knicks when they last won sixth straight from Jan. 2-13, 2006. ... The Knicks are 3-4 in the first game of back-to-back sets. ... THE FACTS: Behind Jamal Crawford's 21 points off the bench, the Atlanta Hawks withstood a spirited third-quarter run and took a Saturday matinee 99-90 from the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

QUOTABLE: "I was talking a lot of trash to the fans and they made me look good."

THE STAT: In his first appearance in New York since flirting with them as a free agent this summer, Joe Johnson didn't make them forlorn for failing to sign him. He shot just 3-of-15 from the floor and missed all six of 3-point attempts. Johnson scored seven points, after averaging 24.5 against them last season.

TURNING POINT: With the Knicks on a 9-0 run and having worked their way back from an 18-point halftime deficit, the momentum was all theirs despite the Hawks having a 75-71 lead. But when Crawford nailed a corner 3-pointer with 10:21 remaining in the fourth quarter, Atlanta took back control of the game and never let it back up.

QUOTABLE II: "That's the one that can keep the pressure off of you."

NOT: The Knicks have found themselves an identity this year: they tend to live and die by how well they shoot from beyond the arc. During their five-game winning streak, they hit at least 40 percent of their 3-pointers in every game. But against the Hawks they hit just 4-of-15 from long distance (26.7 percent).

INSIDE THE ARENA: As usual, Chris Rock was in the building and sitting front row. Aziz Ansari was also in the house.

ROOKIE WATCH: Landry Fields continued his surprising rookie season. He grabbed double-digit rebounds for the second game in a row with 11 and added 15 points. It was his fourth double-double of the season. Landry is now averaging 10.8 points per game and 6.9 rebounds.

NOTABLE: The loss snapped the Knicks' five-game winning streak. The Hawks' win put an end to their personal three-game losing streak to New York. It was also their second game after a team meeting following their loss Tuesday to New Jersey, in which they stressed the importance of coming out more energetic to start the game. Both times they held a 10-point lead after the first quarter.
