The Golden State Warriors' best start in 16 years is long gone. A matchup with the struggling Houston Rockets could help them start to regain their early season success.

Opening a three-game road trip Wednesday, the Warriors try to avoid a fifth straight loss in Houston while handing the Rockets their second five-game slide of the season.

Golden State (7-7) has lost three in a row and five of six since its 6-2 start.

"The only thing we can do now is stay focused and stay together," Monta Ellis said following Monday's 106-89 home loss to Denver.

Ellis and the Warriors did just that in a 132-128 win over visiting Houston on Oct. 27. The star guard hit 18 of 24 shots and matched a career high with 46 points as Golden State opened its season with a victory for the first time in five years. The Warriors also snapped a nine-game skid to Houston in Keith Smart's coaching debut.

Golden State posted what remain season highs in points and field goal percentage (55.4) in that victory, but it has struggled on the offensive end lately.

After shooting 35.2 percent in a 117-89 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, the Warriors shot 40.2 percent Monday. The team's top two scorers, Ellis, among the leaders with 25.5 points per game, and Stephen Curry shot a combined 15 for 43.

"We were missing layups, the ball was going in and out," said Ellis, 9 of 32 in the last two games.

Golden State, which has lost three straight on the road by an average of 21.6 points, could fare better against a Rockets team that is among the worst defensively in the NBA, allowing 108.4 per game.

Houston (3-10) is yielding an average of 115.0 in its last three.

"We have to find a way to keep our heads up," point guard Kyle Lowry said after Monday's 123-116 loss to Phoenix. "We are 3-10, but we are not a 3-10 team. We are way better than that."

The Rockets, off to their worst start since opening 3-11 in 2005-06, have been plagued by injuries and likely won't welcome back Yao Ming (ankle) or Aaron Brooks (ankle) until early next month.

Those key losses have forced coach Rick Adelman to rely more on his bench.

Led by Jordan Hill's first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, a season-high 16 points from Courtney Lee and 12 from Brad Miller, the Rockets' substitutes scored 50 points Monday.

"We've got to build something throughout the year," Adelman told the Rockets' official website. "Our young guys have to start getting better and the only way they're going to do that is if we play them."

Smart also is looking for bench production from Rodney Carney and Reggie Williams with Brendan Wright (back) and David Lee (elbow) unlikely to play during the Warriors' trip.

The Warriors have lost four in a row in Houston, the last three by an average of 19.3 points.

Rockets forward Luis Scola had season highs with 36 points and 16 rebounds in last month's loss in Oakland.

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets have had trouble holding fourth-quarter leads. Not Wednesday night.

Kevin Martin scored 25 points and the Rockets held off the foul-prone Golden State Warriors 111-101 to snap a four-game losing streak.

"We played with a sense of urgency in that fourth quarter," guard Kevin Lowry said. "It was very positive for us and it was definitely a stepping stone for us and our futures play. We just have to finish."

The Rockets took advantage of the Warriors' fouls, hitting 39 of 51 free throws. Golden State has lost six of its last seven games after starting the season 6-2.

"We came out from the start just ready to play tonight and it just carried throughout the game for the whole 48 minutes," Martin said. "That's what we've got to do night in and night out."

Luis Scola added 24 points and 12 rebounds for Houston. Chuck Hayes had 16 points, Shane Battier 13 and Kevin Lowry added 14 points and 10 assists.

Dorell Wright led Golden State with 24 points, Stephen Curry had 21, and Monta Ellis 18. Curry fouled out with 15 seconds to play and Andris Biedrins and Vladimir Radmanovic finished the game with five fouls each.

"There's not a lot to say," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "We didn't get off to a good start and we had to fight back the whole game. We are not making smart decisions and making critical errors at the wrong time."

The Rockets never trailed, but had to fight off a pair of charges by the Warriors.

Golden State cut it to two at 88-86 with 8:35 to play, but the Rockets responded with an 11-0 run.

Houston had a 50-37 advantage with 5:19 to go in the second quarter. The Warriors cut that to 59-51 by the end of the second period and that was just the start of the Warriors' rally.

Golden State outscored the Rockets 18-11 to start the third quarter and cut Houston's lead to one at 70-69. That was as close as the Warriors could get in the third period. Houston led 82-78 going into the fourth period.

"We needed this one," Hayes said. "We needed to win at home and we also just needed to win to stop the losing streak. It's been a tough 14 games. Some games we've been in it and some games mentally we've put ourselves out of it."

The Warriors were foul-prone from the start. The Rockets hit 22 of 26 free throws for a 59-51 lead at the half.

"We definitely couldn't get the momentum on our side," Curry said. "Houston had the crowd and we weren't able to execute and they kept control of the game. I thought we were pretty aggressive by driving to the basket but they seemed to play smarter defensively."

Houston led 41-29 with 9:13 to go in the second quarter and built a 50-37 lead with 5:19 to go. Martin had 12 first-half points.

The Rockets are playing without injured Yao Ming and Aaron Brooks, leaving coach Rick Adelman with a huge job of lineup shuffling to get a winning combination.

"Obviously, we're very small," Adelman said. "We've tried to match up with that. It helps at one end but we haven't had a lot of experience with that trying to run anything offensively, especially with the combination we have out there.

Still, a victory is sweet, attained in any manner.

"Our guys played hard," Adelman said. "We got enough stops in the fourth quarter to open up the lead and we made some free throws at the end."

THE FACTS: Luis Scola scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and the Houston Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Golden State Warriors 111-101 Wednesday before a crowd of 13,847 at Toyota Center.

All five of the Rockets' starters scored in double figures, led by Kevin Martin's 25 points. Chuck Hayes matched a career high with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Houston (4-10), while Kyle Lowry scored 14 and dished out a game-high 10 assists to record his second double-double in the last three games.

Dorell Wright scored 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting to lead the Warriors (7-8), who have lost four in a row overall and on the road. Reggie Williams came off the bench to score 15 on 6-for-10 shooting.

QUOTABLE: "We felt if we moved the ball against them side to side and got them out of position, we were going to get a good opportunity [to score]. ... That's all we worked on [in practice] yesterday was trying to keep the movement going. Don't accept what they're trying to do defensively."

THE STAT: Houston took an aggressive approach on offense from the beginning of the game, leading to 14 trips to the free-throw line in the first quarter. The Rockets finished the game with 51 attempts from the charity stripe, 33 more than the Warriors.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors trailed for the entire game, but came within 88-86 after Monta Ellis made a driving layup with 8:34 remaining in the game. On the Rockets' next possession, Courtney Lee drained a 3-pointer from the corner that sparked an 11-0 run for Houston.

QUOTABLE II: "We needed this one. ... I had to be aggressive whenever I got the ball, and I tried to finish as best as I can and if not, then get to the line and try to knock it down."

HOT: Lee was huge off the bench for Houston, shooting 3-for-4 overall and 2-for-2 from 3-point range in 21-plus minutes of action. His defensive play was just as important as he kept Ellis from constantly driving to the bucket.

NOT: Ellis' recent shooting struggles continued Wednesday as he made only seven of his 21 attempts. Ellis has shot 16-for-43 (37.2 percent) over his last three games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Scola recorded his second double-double against Golden State of this season, rewarding fantasy owners who chose to start him based off his 36-point, 16-rebound performance against the Warriors on Oct. 27.

GOOD MOVE: Adelman pulled the defensively challenged Martin out of the game with 8:30 remaining, opting to go with a backcourt of Lowry and Lee. That decision paid off, as Lee and Lowry combined to limit Ellis to only one basket. Martin returned to the game in the final minute for free-throw shooting purposes.

BAD MOVE: Keith Smart's decision to start forward Dan Gadzuric didn't work well for the Warriors, as Gadzuric picked up three fouls in the first quarter and only played for a little less than seven minutes.

QUOTABLE III: "There's not a lot to say. We didn't get off to a good start, and we had to fight back all game. ... We are not making smart decisions and [we are] making critical errors at the wrong time."

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors guard Jeremy Lin was quite effective in nearly 13 minutes off the bench. He scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting, pulled down two rebounds, and dished out an assist.

NOTABLE: Warriors forward Brandan Wright missed his third consecutive game with a strained lower back. He will not be with the team on its three-game road trip and will be reevaluated next week. ... Golden State has lost five straight games in Houston. ... Hayes set a career high for free throws made and attempted (8-for-8).
