Pistons-Mavericks Preview

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the league's best defensive teams, but their offense continues to struggle. They may not be able to afford such a discrepancy against a Detroit Pistons team that is playing well offensively.

The Mavericks look to win their fifth straight over Detroit on Tuesday night.

Dallas (8-4) has held seven straight opponents to fewer than 100 points, its longest stretch since the 2007-08 season. The Mavericks are among the top five in the NBA in scoring defense, holding opponents to 92.3 points per game.

"We're trying to be the best zone team in basketball," coach Rick Carlisle said after a 98-93 victory at Atlanta on Saturday. "It's challenging. We have to play to our length and experience and our knowledge of the game."

The Mavericks avoided a third straight loss Saturday, one night after being outrebounded 59-34 in an 88-83 home defeat to Chicago. Dallas bounced back to outrebound Atlanta 40-37, including 10 offensive boards.

Dirk Nowitzki finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. He's averaging 27.8 points and 8.5 boards in the last four games but isn't getting much help.

Dallas, which is averaging 96.2 points - nearly six fewer than last season - has scored more than 100 only three times and has been held below that mark the last five games.

Detroit is having more offensive success, but its defense has been struggling. The Pistons have averaged 103.0 points over their last five games but are giving up that same amount. They beat Washington 115-110 in overtime Sunday to improve to 5-3 following an 0-5 start.

Defense was an area Detroit was hoping to improve upon after giving up 99.1 points per game last season - its most since 1999-2000 when it allowed 102.0. However, it's being outrebounded by almost five per game - one of the highest differentials in the league.

While the Pistons try to improve defensively, they'll continue to rely on their offense. On Sunday, Charlie Villanueva had 25 points and 11 rebounds while Richard Hamilton matched his season high with 27 points - 12 in overtime.

"He's always there. Rip's been struggling a little bit but we know what type of player he is," Villanueva said. "We know what he brings to the table. Today he showed what he is capable of doing."

Hamilton had averaged 9.2 points while shooting 36.0 percent in his previous five games, but he finished 11 of 21 from the field. The 32-year-old was limited to 46 games last season because of injuries.

"I think that's the first time all season that I was allowed to play my game and that's just moving without the ball and things like that," he said.

The Mavericks have won six of the last seven meetings with the Pistons, taking three straight in Dallas.

DALLAS(AP) For three quarters, Dirk Nowitzki was practically flying solo. Finally, he got some help down the stretch.

Nowitzki had a season-high 42 points with 12 rebounds, carrying the Dallas Mavericks to an 88-84 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Jason Terry added 16 points and Caron Butler contributed 11 points and eight rebounds to help the Mavericks to their fifth straight win over the Pistons.

Nowitzki went 13 for 23 from the field, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts, and converted 13 of 16 free throws.

"It was winning time and the big German was hot," Terry said. "He was tremendous. It never ceases to amaze me the way he's able to fill it up."

The Mavericks erased a 12-point second-half deficit. Nowitzki scored 15 and went 8 for 8 from the line in the final quarter, but Terry's nine points and Butler's seven in the last 12 minutes also were crucial.

Butler had Dallas' first six points of the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback.

"Caron got us started with some drives," Nowitzki said. "We really had to grind this one out. It wasn't pretty for a while, but (Terry) got hot there at the end and made some big baskets."

Tayshaun Prince scored a season-high 19 points and Rodney Stuckey also had 19 for the Pistons.

The Mavericks were lethargic for much of the night before picking up their energy level down the stretch.

"It was a slower-paced game, a playoff-style game," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "But we found a way to get it done. It isn't always going to be pretty."

Nowitzki scored nine straight, capped by an 18-footer with 5:29 remaining for a 75-70 lead.

Terry hit jumpers on consecutive possessions for an 83-78 advantage with 2:35 left.

Richard Hamilton helped Detroit rally, making two free throws with 1:01 left to trim Dallas' lead to 84-82. Terry missed a long jumper, but Nowitzki pulled down the rebound, then drained four foul shots in the final 18.9 seconds to seal the victory.

Detroit held a 61-56 advantage after three quarters, with Nowitzki's 27 points keeping Dallas close.

But the Pistons faded at crunch time, going 7 for 18 from the floor and getting outrebounded in the final quarter, 13-6.

"This is a tough loss because we controlled the game pretty much throughout," Prince said. "We knew it would come down to Jason Terry and Dirk making plays at the end. It's a tough combination to try to stop."

The Mavericks, opening a stretch of four games in five nights, came out strong, but they couldn't sustain it.

Dallas rolled to an 11-0 lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes, capped by Nowitzki's 3-pointer. Detroit missed eight of its first nine field goal attempts with two turnovers as Dallas went up by as many as 14.

The Mavs led by seven after the first quarter but the Pistons outscored them 25-14 in the second to take a 42-38 halftime lead. Nowitzki had 17 points at the break, but none of his teammates could chip in with more than four.

The Pistons also will be busy during the holiday season as they entered a stretch of six games in nine nights.

NOTES: Dallas' 14-point second quarter was its lowest of the season for that quarter. ... The Pistons held a 16-5 rebounding edge in the second even with team rebounding leader Ben Wallace spending the quarter on the bench. ... Dallas F Shawn Marion missed the morning shootaround with an illness, and was able to play only 15 minutes, scoring four points. Carlisle said Marion should be fine for Wednesday night's game at Oklahoma City.

THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki had a season-high 42 points and 12 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks rallied Tuesday to defeat the Detroit Pistons 88-84 at the American Airlines Center. Jason Terry added 16 points and Jason Kidd dished 10 assists as Dallas defeated Detroit for the fifth consecutive time. Rodney Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince scored 19 each to pace the Pistons, who led by 12 in the third quarter and were ahead by five entering the fourth.

QUOTABLE: "We would have loved to get an easy win tonight and get some rest, but sometimes you have to grind it out. We're going to have an unbelievable challenge tomorrow night at Oklahoma City." -- Nowitzki, whose Mavericks played the first of four games in five nights.

THE STAT: Nowitzki (15) and Terry (nine) combined to score 24 of the Mavericks' last 25 points.

TURNING POINT: Nowitzki was 3-for-3 from behind the arc. His 3-pointer with 6:09 remaining put the Mavericks on top for good at 73-70. This was Nowitzki's 16th career 40-point game.

QUOTABLE II: "The fourth period, we didn't sustain defensively the way we had been playing in the third period. We needed that second group who did a great job in the second period to play the same way, and we just didn't have the same energy." -- Detroit head coach John Kuester.

HOT: The Mavericks scored a season-high 32 fourth-quarter points, matching their combined total from the second and third quarters. Dallas shot 60 percent (9-for-15) from the field and went 12-for-14 at the line in the final period to clinch the victory. ... Stuckey was 10-for-10 at the charity stripe.

NOT: Detroit's Richard Hamilton missed his first five shots, sat the entire second quarter and finished with five points on 1-for-7 shooting. Teammate Charlie Villanueva had only two points (13 below his season average) and racked up five fouls in 17:30. ... Other than Nowitzki, the rest of the Mavericks shot 31 percent (17-for-55). The team shot a season-worst 38.5 percent.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Detroit's Tracy McGrady played nearly 20 minutes and finished with six points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

ROOKIE WATCH: Center Greg Monroe topped the Pistons with eight rebounds (four on the offensive glass), two off his season high.

NOTABLE: With just 14 points on 5-for-20 shooting, the Mavericks posted their lowest-scoring second quarter of the season. Their previous low was 20 points against New Orleans on Nov. 15. ... Dallas tied its season low with eight turnovers. ... The Mavericks raced to a 16-2 lead to start the game. ... Detroit outscored Dallas 36-18 in the paint.
