Jazz-Trail Blazers Preview

Injuries may have ravaged Portland's roster, but they have done nothing to shake the Trail Blazers' collective confidence.

The short-handed Blazers look to ride the momentum of two straight victories while trying to avoid a fifth consecutive loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday night at the Rose Garden.

Playing without injured leading scorer Brandon Roy (18.1 points per game), Portland (8-5) has won two in a row after dropping five of eight. Thursday's 86-83 win over Denver came a day after the Blazers learned they lost 2007 No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden to another season-ending knee surgery.

Losing Oden is another blow to a team without center Joel Przybilla (knee) and won't have Roy (knee) back until Nov. 26.

"We've got a good team with good players so we can still win games," forward Nicolas Batum said.

The 6-foot-8 Batum and second-year guard Wesley Matthews have helped the Blazers try to overcome those injuries.

A third-year forward, Batum has averaged 16.5 points in his last eight games.

Matthews, signed as free agent after he averaged 9.4 points as a rookie last season with Utah, had 30 points in a win at Memphis on Tuesday and posted his first career double-double with 20 and 10 rebounds versus Denver.

"Whatever it takes to help the team win. Everybody has to step up, including me," said Matthews, who has started the last two games in place of Roy.

Portland can still lean on veterans LaMarcus Aldridge and Andre Miller, who combined for 40 points against the Nuggets. Aldridge has averaged 20.0 points in his last five games against the Jazz.

Portland, which limited Denver to 38.5 percent shooting, has held its opponents to fewer than 100 points in each of its victories this season.

The Blazers have not done that enough against Utah, which averaged 106.3 points on 54.9-percent shooting while going 4-0 against them last season.

Though the Jazz (8-5) are trying for a fifth straight road victory, they have lost two of three overall after falling 94-82 to surging San Antonio on Friday.

Deron Williams had 23 points for Utah, which rallied from a 15-point deficit to tie the game late in the third quarter, but unlike recent road wins against Miami, Orlando, Atlanta and Charlotte, it couldn't pull off another double-digit comeback after scoring 14 points in the fourth.

"We didn't have too much energy out there," said forward Paul Millsap, who scored 12 points and added seven rebounds

With Carlos Boozer in Chicago and Mehmet Okur still out with an Achilles' injury, Williams continues to carry the offensive load, averaging a career-high 22.3 points. He's averaged 23.2 and shot 50.7 percent in his last five games at Portland.

Utah assistant Paul Johnson is expected to guide the team for a second straight game while coach Jerry Sloan attends the funeral of a family member. Sloan likely is to rejoin the club for Monday night's home game versus Sacramento.

Miles helps Jazz rally past Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore.(AP) The Portland Trail Blazers appeared powerless to stop C.J. Miles.

The reserve small forward came seemingly from nowhere to hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter - four of them from 26 feet and beyond - and the Utah Jazz came back to bury the Blazers 103-94 Saturday night.

"(The basket) looked as big as me throwing a rock in a lake," marveled Miles, who scored 17 of his 25 points in the final quarter and made a career-high seven 3-pointers. "Only once or twice since I have been in the NBA have I been able to shoot the ball and just start backpedaling. That's how I felt in the second half."

Al Jefferson had 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz, who have been the NBA's best comeback team this season, with six fourth-quarter comeback wins. Paul Millsap had 15 points and six rebounds.

Utah trailed from the middle of the first quarter until the middle of the fourth, when Miles put them ahead 82-80 with his fourth 3-pointer. He hit three more as the Jazz pulled away from the stunned Blazers. LaMarcus Aldridge made a 20-footer to make it 94-92, but Utah went on an 11-2 run from there.

"I think sometimes the home team tightens up a little bit," said Utah assistant Phil Johnson, who was leading the Jazz for the second night, with Jerry Sloan attending a family member's funeral. "I really believe that when a team is coming back on you like that it is hard to withstand."

Aldridge had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who have dropped five in a row to Utah. Wesley Matthews had 16 points in place of injured All-Star Brandon Roy. Andre Miller had 15 points and nine assists.

Matthews started for the third game in place of Roy, who was resting his ailing right knee. The Blazers lured Matthews from the Jazz this offseason as a restricted free agent after a successful rookie season that was surprising because he went undrafted coming out of Marquette.

The 6-foot-5 guard scored a career-high 30 points against Memphis on Tuesday, and had 20 points and 10 rebounds Thursday against the Nuggets. Despite playing without Roy and after hearing the news that former No. 1 pick Greg Oden will miss the rest of the season after having his second microfracture knee surgery, Portland won both of those games. They appeared to be on their way to a third win Saturday.

"We were solid for three quarters," Matthews said. "If it had been a three-quarter game we would have been all right. We knew going into this that they've been known for comebacks. They're a tough team and we didn't just put it together for four full quarters."

Utah entered the game having won six of its last eight but off of a 1-2 homestand and was soundly beaten Friday by red-hot San Antonio.

The Jazz have made a habit of fourth-quarter comebacks. They had a stretch of five consecutive wins earlier this month after trailing in the fourth quarter, including three consecutive wins after trailing by at least 10 at halftime. That's the first time in shot-clock era that has happened.

Portland led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, but the Jazz went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 41-40 on a three-point play by Millsap. The Blazers led 48-45 at the break and by eight after three quarters.

Notes: Portland does not play again until Friday, when it hosts New Orleans. ... The Jazz have actually been better on the road this season (6-2) then at home (3-3). ... Portland had 24 offensive rebounds to Utah's six.

THE FACTS: Utah's C.J. Miles went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers in a 17-point fourth quarter that lifted the Jazz from a 74-65 deficit to a 103-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night at the Rose Garden. Utah's 38 points in the final period were the most allowed by the Blazers in any quarter this season.

QUOTABLE: "We're asking him [forward LaMarcus Aldridge] to do a lot, and I don't think that's fair. We definitely need our best player [guard Brandon Roy] when he's available, but he has to take care of his body."

THE STAT: With Roy resting an ailing knee, the Blazers have been running most of their offense through point guard Andre Miller and Aldridge. Those two combined Saturday for 13 turnovers (a career-high eight by Aldridge), with 11 assists (nine by Miller).

TURNING POINT: After Portland made an 11-4 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, the Blazers hoisted 13 of their 23 fourth-quarter shots from 20 feet or more and lost their momentum, the lead and the game.

QUOTABLE II: "I was doing that at some point, too. Sometimes numbers do lie."
-- Portland guard Wesley Matthews on Miles, who came into the game shooting .279 from behind the arc but made 7-for-10 3s.

HOT: Camby, the 36-year-old center, had a game-high 14 rebounds, giving him four straight games with 10 or more, and 57 in those four games.

NOT: Matthews went 0-for-6 on 3-pointers, looking overly eager to beat his former team (he played for Utah last season as a rookie).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Aldridge is getting more opportunities to be a lead player, especially on the nights when Roy takes off to rest his knees. He took a game-high 21 shots Saturday and led Portland with 24 points, adding 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. One warning: He's averaging 39 minutes, and hopes to go down to 34 or 35 once injured center Joel Przybilla is about to suit up.

GOOD MOVE: Portland coach Nate McMillan put the bigger Matthews on Utah point guard Deron Williams, leaving Miller on Raja Bell defensively. Williams scored 12 points, 11 under his season average, and was 3-for-13 from the field, and Bell didn't hurt the Blazers, scoring nine points.

BAD MOVE: McMillan didn't do anything to stop the Blazers' fourth-quarter skid. After the game, he chastised his players for losing track of Miles in transition, settling for jump shots and turning over the ball.

ROOKIE WATCH: Armon Johnson, the second-round pick from Nevada, had a decent 14 minutes off the bench, getting eight points on 3-for-6 shooting, plus four rebounds and one assist, with no turnovers.

NOTABLE: The Blazers have managed to rebound well on most nights, even with Greg Oden (knee surgery) and Przybilla (knee rehab) expected to make his 2010-11 debut next week. Portland outrebounded Utah 24-6 on the offensive boards to help the Blazers lead 17-6 in second-chance points and 46-34 in scoring in the paint.
