Scrutiny may have been expected, but the Miami Heat's recent inconsistency may have only heightened the intensity. Beating the surging Phoenix Suns may alleviate some of the criticisms and rumors.

The Heat attempt to build on just their second win in five games as they host the Suns on Wednesday night.

Miami (6-4) understood it would be under an intense spotlight after adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to a roster already boasting Dwyane Wade during the offseason.

The scrutiny has increased with the Heat's first slump, which has exposed flaws on what many expected to be the NBA's dominant team. Not living up to those lofty expectations early has made coach Erik Spoelstra a target of reports and speculation that he'd be removed for team president Pat Riley.

"We're 6-4 because we haven't executed the game plan," said Wade, who leads the team at 24.7 points per game. "Not because of our coaching staff. They have done an unbelievable job. The perception out there is perception. And that's all it is."

Spoelstra feels the negative chatter is only unifying his team.

"All of us understand how this team is being perceived," he said. "I'd be totally naive if I didn't know what was going on out there. I think it's been good for our group. I don't sense that it's been a distraction at all. I really think it has brought us closer. We've had a tighter focus and commitment. At times in the locker room, I hear guys kind of joke around about all the swirl that's around."

The Heat may have begun lessening the criticism by beating Toronto 109-100 on Saturday. However, their defensive play has become a concern after allowing an average of 109.3 points while losing two of three.

"We just have to keep on continuing to grind games defensively and build those habits," Spoelstra said.

Another strong effort from Wade would help. The guard scored 31 points with eight rebounds against the Raptors after making 2 of 12 shots for a season-low eight points in a 112-107 loss to Boston on Thursday.

James, who had 23 points and 11 assists Saturday, is developing strong chemistry with his new club, averaging 22.3 points with a team-high 8.9 assists.

Bosh isn't having the same success with 14.5 points per game and 6.0 rebounds after posting career highs of 24.0 and 10.8, respectively, with Toronto last season. He had 12 points and six boards in his first game against his former team Saturday.

The forward-center could be in for a big performance against the Suns (6-4), against whom he's averaged 27.2 points and 12.4 boards in the last five meetings.

Wade is scoring 33.0 points per game in his last five matchups with Phoenix. He totaled 56 points and 15 assists as the visiting team won each of the two meetings last season.

The Suns, who have won four of five in Miami, have won five of six after a slow start.

Phoenix continued to roll Monday, as six players scored in double-digits in a 100-94 win over Denver.

"I think guys are starting to get comfortable playing with each other and it's shown in the last couple of games we've played," said guard Jason Richardson, who had 11 points and six rebounds against the Nuggets.

Steve Nash has been key during over the last six games, averaging 19.8 points and 12.0 assists. The All-Star guard has been outstanding in the last three visits to Miami, making 70.8 percent of his shots to average 29.7 points.

Bosh's season-high 35 lift Heat past Suns, 123-96

MIAMI(AP) All Chris Bosh needed to get his scoring touch back was a matchup with the Phoenix Suns.

And it didn't even take a full night's work.

Bosh scored a season-high 35 points before sitting out the fourth quarter, LeBron James finished with 20 points and the Miami Heat ran away from the Suns 123-96 on Wednesday.

"We're smart," Bosh said. "And we know how to play the correct way."

Dwyane Wade added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists for Miami, which used two big runs - a 24-9 spurt to end the first half, followed by an 18-3 flurry that closed the third quarter - to snap the Suns' three-game winning streak. James also had nine assists and eight boards, but deferred afterward to Bosh's breakout night.

"I think he was due - well overdue - for one of these games," James said.

Eddie House scored 15 points and Carlos Arroyo added 10 for Miami, which enjoyed its biggest win over Phoenix in nearly 14 years and held Suns point guard Steve Nash to an uncharacteristically low two assists.

"Well, we weren't necessarily expecting that result," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We just wanted to focus on our game, our energy and really having a defensive edge to us again. That's one of the most challenging teams to defend."

The top criticisms of the Heat this season, in no particular order, had been how they struggled against big-time point guards, how they couldn't seem to put teams away and that Bosh's numbers had taken a hit as he adjusted to his new role in Miami.

None of those issues were issues against the Suns.

"They just outplayed us the entire game," Nash said. "We only have ourselves to blame. We didn't play hard. We didn't play with enough aggressiveness or urgency and I think it showed."

Slowed by a sore groin, Nash scored 17 points for Phoenix. But the last time he had only two assists was Dec. 29, 2008, against Oklahoma City, 141 games ago. And Wednesday marked only the ninth time in 737 games where Nash played at least 29 minutes and failed to get more than two assists, according to STATS LLC.

"I kind of took a little risk," said Nash, who may consider sitting out Thursday in Orlando. "It didn't feel great, but I don't think I did serious damage to it."

Controlling Nash, who came in averaging 12 assists in his last five games, was a huge point of emphasis for the Heat. In Miami's four losses this season, opposing point guards - Rajon Rondo twice, Deron Williams and Chris Paul - averaged 16.5 assists per game.

Grant Hill scored 15 for Phoenix, which also got 14 from Channing Frye, 11 from Jason Richardson and Goran Dragic, and 10 from Hedo Turkoglu. The Suns were outrebounded 42-32.

Bosh started quickly - not a surprise given his recent history against Phoenix.

"When CB comes out as aggressive as he was, I think that helps us a lot," James said.

He hit his first four shots and had 14 points by the time the game was 9 minutes old. He has topped 30 points in three of his last six meetings with Phoenix - yet oddly, hadn't been part of a win over the Suns since Feb. 10, 2004.

By the time Bosh went to the bench for the evening, snapping that streak was certain.

"We just never came close to guarding Bosh tonight," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said.

Miami wasted a 22-point home lead at home against Utah last week, and for a moment in the third quarter, the Heat seemed on the brink of blowing another huge edge. Phoenix frustrated Miami briefly with zone defense and Nash's finger-roll with 3:14 left in the third cut what had been a 25-point Miami edge minutes earlier to 82-70.

Some anxiety pulsed through the building.

No need.

"We didn't panic," Bosh said. "We didn't get out of place or anything. We just continued to play solid basketball."

Bosh scored the game's next seven points, kickstarting a run that put things away for Miami.

Reserve House hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to get the lead back to 24, and Wade had a spectacular three-point play - defensive rebound at one end, drive downcourt, finger-roll layup while getting fouled and then highstepping past photographers - to make it 100-73 entering the fourth.

"We were focused in tonight," Wade said. "No matter what the score got to, I think we would have been fine."

NOTES: Heat F Juwan Howard, who was getting quality minutes for the first time this season, broke his nose. His availability for Friday against Charlotte is unclear. ... Suns C Earl Barron made his Phoenix debut, one day after signing with the club. Barron was part of Miami's 2006 NBA championship team.

THE FACTS: Forward Chris Bosh scored a season-high 35 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 123-96 victory against the Phoenix Suns Wednesday at AmericanAirlines Arena. It was the Heat's first win over a team with a winning record since defeating Orlando Oct. 29.

QUOTABLE: "We weren't necessarily expecting that result."

THE STAT: The Heat outrebounded the Suns 42-32. Miami had been struggling in that area, but were able to dominate a smaller Phoenix team. Forward Udonis Haslem pulled down a team-high 10 boards.

TURNING POINT: After the teams played nearly even in the first quarter, the Heat turned it up in the second. They outscored the Suns 37-19, much of it because of an improved offense. It appears Bosh, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are finally showing signs of continuity.

HOT: Bosh silenced the critics who have bashed him in recent weeks. He was 12-for-17 from the field, knocking down several jumpers from the perimeter. He also made all 11 free throws. Bosh had his season high (22 points) by halftime.

NOT: Steve Nash had zero assists in the first half. It was the first time that happened since April 14, 2003 when Nash played for the Dallas Mavericks. Nash finished with two assists, becoming the first elite point guard the Heat were able to slow down. They struggled in the past against the likes of Rajon Rondo, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: LeBron James nearly had a triple-double with 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. His numbers would have been more impressive had he not sat most of the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Serena Williams chatted it up courtside with Bosh's fiancé, Adrienne Williams.

GOOD MOVE: The Heat said the plan was to get the ball to Bosh early. As guard Eddie House said after the game, they are more effective when there is an inside presence. An aggressive Bosh was the difference.

BAD MOVE: The Suns struggled to handle the pick-and-roll with James and Bosh. Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry never seemed to adjust.

NOTABLE: With his performance, Bosh became the Heat's third 30-point scorer. As James said in the postgame, "Welcome to the 30-point club."
