Lakers-Bucks Preview

After an 8-0 start, the Los Angeles Lakers have lost two straight and are seeking a spark as they try to get back on track.

The NBA's highest-scoring team will look to do so when it takes on the league's top defensive club Tuesday night.

The Lakers begin a three-game Midwest road trip against the Milwaukee Bucks, who are allowing a league-low 89.4 points per game.

Los Angeles scored more than 100 points for the ninth time in 10 games Sunday, but fell 121-116 to Phoenix. The Lakers gave up 22 3-pointers - the second-highest total in NBA history.

"You hate losing, especially to start a road trip, but it is what it is," guard Kobe Bryant said. "They made big shots, a lot of them."

Bryant ended up just shy of his 18th career triple-double, finishing with 25 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds. Pau Gasol had team-highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds while Lamar Odom added 22 points and 11 boards.

"You know you're always upset when you lose," coach Phil Jackson said. "This is about winning, this game is, and losing is a part parcel that you're dealing with as far as accepting it."

The Lakers (8-2) are scoring an NBA-high 112.5 points a game. Bryant's 25.2 average ranks third in the league, but he may have a tough time reaching that number against Milwaukee.

This season, only Boston's Paul Pierce (28), Charlotte's D.J. Augustin (26) and New Orleans' David West (25) have equaled or surpassed that average against the Bucks, who haven't allowed a 30-point scorer in 11 games. Milwaukee (5-5) held Bryant to 12 points on 4-of-21 shooting in the last meeting Jan. 10, although the Lakers won 95-77.

Milwaukee was particularly impressive against run-and-gun Golden State on Saturday, shutting down the Warriors in a 79-72 victory. The Bucks haven't given up 100 points in regulation for nine straight contests.

"Very good game and we needed it," coach Scott Skiles said. "We only scored 79 points, and you don't often win when you score 79. Our defense was solid, we rebounded the ball well. We got after them early and made them turn it over a little bit.

"We're starting to string together a couple good defensive performances."

John Salmons scored a season-high 26 points for the Bucks, winners of three straight and four of five.

"Our defense has been great all year, and we were able to hold a good offensive club to 34 percent (shooting), " Salmons said.

The Bucks may need a similar defensive effort against the Lakers, as they're 28th in the league with 92.1 points a game. Point guard Brandon Jennings leads the team at 15.7 points per contest.

Los Angeles has won five straight in the series, and Bryant is 21-4 against Milwaukee in his career.

Bryant scores 31 as Lakers beat Bucks 118-107

MILWAUKEE(AP) Shannon Brown said his goal is to win the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. To be a serious candidate, he'll need to keep repeating performances like this one.

Brown scored 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, Kobe Bryant scored 31 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 118-107 on Tuesday night to snap a two-game losing streak.

"I'm going to keep working and we're going to keep winning," Brown said. "It's more about doing what I've got to do to help my team win."

Los Angeles had started 8-0 before the consecutive losses, but Brown and Bryant sparked the Lakers on both ends of the floor against what had been the stingiest defense in the NBA.

"He's even a better shooter than he was last year," Bryant said. "You see him now making plays off the dribble, making plays for others, passing off the dribble. He continues to get better. This is just the beginning for him."

Bryant scored 13 points in the third quarter, including seven straight in a crucial stretch. Brown didn't skip a beat in the fourth, hitting four 3-pointers that stifled the Bucks' rally.

"Tried to open it up, that's my job coming off the bench, to get momentum if we're lacking or do whatever it takes," Brown said. "Today, it was hitting shots and playing defense."

Brandon Jennings scored 31 points, Andrew Bogut had 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Drew Gooden added 22 points and 13 boards for Milwaukee (5-6), which had its three-game winning streak end.

Brown's reverse layup gave Los Angeles a 99-88 lead with just over 8 minutes to play. Then the reserve guard added a jumper and a 3-pointer moments later to make it 104-90.

After Milwaukee went on a 7-0 run, Brown hit another 3 that pushed the lead back out to 107-97, and Milwaukee never got within two possessions of tying.

Gooden, Brown's former teammate in Cleveland and Chicago, just shook his head when reciting Brown's stat line.

"Shannon was so efficient out there for them. Seven of nine from the field, 21 points, 21 minutes, zero turnovers coming off the bench; that's an efficient game coming off the bench," Gooden said.

Bryant, who improved to 22-4 against Milwaukee, hurt the Bucks in the third quarter, scoring seven straight to break open a tight game in the first of three-game Midwest swing for Los Angeles that includes stops in Detroit and Minnesota.

After Bryant hit two free throws, he stripped John Salmons on the ensuing possession and got the ball back from Derek Fisher on the fast break. Bryant hit an easy layup as Jennings fouled him and converted the three-point play.

Bryant then drew another foul, this time on Salmons, and hit both of the free throws to make it 82-75.

Milwaukee had held some potent offenses to pitiful performances during its three-game winning streak. But there wouldn't be a repeat performance against the Lakers, who got to the rim and the foul line seemingly as much as they wanted. Pau Gasol had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Lamar Odom added 13 points and Fisher had 10.

Los Angeles showed it could play a little defense that was missing, too, in losses to Phoenix and Denver. Milwaukee committed four turnovers in the stretch because of the Lakers' pressure, even as the pace clearly favored Los Angeles.

"We talked about it at halftime, doing a better job defensively, we were really poor in the first half, just giving layup after layup," Bryant said. "It was good. It was not what we're used to doing, but it's a step in that direction."

The Lakers came in as the highest-scoring team in the NBA, averaging 112.5 points, and the Bucks were allowing an NBA-low 89.4. Steve Blake's 3-pointer busted the 90-point mark in the closing seconds of the third quarter and gave the Lakers their biggest lead, 90-81, heading into the fourth.

"They're the No. 1 offensive team in the league. We're the No. 1 defensively," Bogut said. "They won that battle, but I think we just have to do a better job defensively. We gave them a lot of easy baskets."

Notes: Lakers F Ron Artest only played 17 1/2 minutes and asked to come out of the game, but insisted nothing was wrong afterward. Coach Phil Jackson said Artest would play on Wednesday night against Detroit. ... Bogut went 2 of 10 from the free throw line. ... Lakers C Theo Ratliff had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove torn cartilage in his left knee. Ratliff is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks. Los Angeles is also without C Andrew Bynum, who hasn't returned from offseason knee surgery. The Lakers hope he'll return to practice next week. Jackson said that they may need to get another big man to bolster their front court.

THE FACTS: Shannon Brown scored 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, and Kobe Bryant shared game honors with 31 points as the Los Angeles Lakers overcame 31 points by Brandon Jennings to down the Milwaukee Bucks 118-107 Tuesday night at the Bradley Center.

The Lakers (9-2) snapped a two-game skid and ended Milwaukee's three-game winning streak as the Bucks fell to 5-6.

QUOTABLE: "Everybody told Shannon he had to learn how to shoot a jump shot when he came into the NBA and he's taken that seriously and worked hard on it and now he's a legitimate 3-point shooter."
-- Lakers coach Phil Jackson on Brown, who was 7-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

THE STAT: Along with Brown's 4-for-5 shooting on 3-pointers, Matt Barnes made both he took and Steve Blake made two of three, giving the Laker bench an 8-for-10 night on 3-pointers. The Lakers were 10-for-16 as a team on 3s.

TURNING POINT: Milwaukee had trimmed a 104-90 deficit in half with a 7-0 run and Jennings faked up for a 3-pointer and got Blake up in the air. Jennings leaned forward to try to draw contact but didn't get the call and his shot rimmed out. Seconds later, Brown drained his third 3-pointer of the quarter, and what could have been a four-point deficit had Jennings got the call or had his shot dropped was back to 10 at 107-97 with 5:35 left.

QUOTABLE II: "That was a six-point swing. It was huge. ... When you're trailing and you've got a chance to get a three-point play, and then somebody else comes down and hits a three, that's huge. That's a momentum changer."

HOT: Drew Gooden had his best night since coming to the Bucks as a free agent in the summer, hitting eight of 11 shots, including his first two 3-pointers of the season. He finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds. He entered the game shooting 38.7 percent from the field.

NOT: Although he played big with 18 points and four blocked shots, Bucks center Andrew Bogut was just 2-for-10 on free throws. He also had a 3-for-10 night at the line in the season opener and is shooting just 46.3 percent (19-for-41) for the season.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Jennings' 31 points were a season-high and he chipped in six assists. Bryant had seven rebounds and three assists to go with his 31 points.

INSIDE THE ARENA: A number of Green Bay Packers were in the premium courtside seats including starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Although a California native, Rodgers wore a Bucks hat and pointed to it when he was shown on the large screen of the scoreboard between the third and fourth quarters.

GOOD MOVE: One game after his bench went 1-for-18 in a victory over Golden State on Saturday, Bucks coach Scott Skiles didn't hesitate to send in the second unit in a wave near the end of the first quarter. Corey Maggette (4-for-6), Earl Boykins (3-for-3) and Ersan Ilyasova (2-for-3) combined to go 9-for-12 in the first half to help the Bucks to a 59-57 lead.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bucks center Larry Sanders played just four minutes but had two blocks in that time.

NOTABLE: The Lakers entered the game as the league's top scoring team at 112.5 points per game. "It'll be a tough game for us to win if they score 112 points," Bucks coach Skiles said before the game. He was spot-on with that prediction. ... The Bucks shot 55.3 percent (26-for-47) in the first half and made six of 10 3-pointers. In the second half they were just 15-for-42 (35.7 percent) and 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) on 3-pointers.
