Timberwolves-Hawks Preview

After getting off to such a fast start, the Atlanta Hawks are struggling offensively and in the paint. Making matters worse, they now have to contend with Minnesota's thriving inside game featuring Michael Beasley and Kevin Love, who is coming off a sensational performance.

The Hawks try to avoid losing five straight for the first time in more than 2 1/2 years Sunday when they host a Timberwolves team seeking a third win in a row.

Atlanta (6-4) became the Eastern Conference's last team to lose with a 118-114 defeat to Phoenix last Sunday. Though the Hawks were able to keep up with the fast-paced Suns, their offense has since cooled off.

After averaging 106.1 points in their first seven games, the Hawks are averaging 88.7 in the last three. They've been outscored by an average of 4.6 points in the paint and outrebounded by an average of 3.6 boards.

That doesn't bode well considering Love and the Timberwolves (3-7) are coming to town.

Love has been instrumental to Minnesota averaging a league-best 49.2 rebounds, and he grabbed a franchise-record 31 boards while scoring 31 points Friday in a 112-103 win over New York. It was the NBA's first 30-30 game since Moses Malone in 1982.

"Kevin had an incredible game," coach Kurt Rambis said. "Those numbers are just stupid."

Beasley, Minnesota's other emerging third-year forward, also helped carry the team against the Knicks, finishing with 35 points and six rebounds. The 6-foot-10 forward was coming off a career-high 42 points in Wednesday's 98-89 victory at Sacramento, the Wolves' first road win in 18 games.

The Hawks have lost their last three home games and are on the verge of their first five-game losing streak overall since dropping six in a row from Feb. 8-20, 2008.

It appeared Atlanta was going to snap its skid Friday against Utah but conceded an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead and lost 90-86. Mike Bibby finished with two points and is averaging 6.0 in the last three contests after averaging 12.1 points to start the season.

The Hawks, who finished with a season low in points against the Jazz, missed 10 of 21 free throws and allowed their opponent to reach double digits in offensive rebounds for a seventh consecutive game.

"The combination of not making free throws and giving up 15 offensive rebounds to a good team is not going to get you a win," coach Larry Drew said.

While Atlanta was blowing a double-digit lead Friday, Minnesota came back from 21 down in the third quarter to win. Love had 11 points and 15 boards in the third, and the Wolves went on a 33-9 run bridging the third and fourth quarters.

"I just got a good mindset that every single one was mine," said Love, who had 23 points and 24 rebounds in a loss to the Lakers on Tuesday. "It seemed like no matter what anybody did I was going to go and get those rebounds."

Love is averaging 12.6 rebounds and 17.0 points in five career games against the Hawks - his second-best scoring output against any opponent - but that hasn't led to any victories.

The Wolves have been outscored by an average of 10.3 points in losing the last nine in the series, and they've dropped seven straight in Atlanta since a 103-93 win in 2002.

Atlanta, though, is at risk of losing four consecutive home games for the first time since March 21-April 1, 2007. The Hawks were 34-7 at Philips Arena last season and didn't suffer their fourth loss there until Jan. 1.

Hawks end 4-game skid, beat Wolves 111-105

ATLANTA(AP) The Atlanta Hawks were relieved but anything but giddy after ending their four-game losing streak.

The Hawks' inability to pull away from Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves convinced coach Larry Drew his team hasn't solved all of its troubles.

Al Horford had 28 points and 10 rebounds and the Hawks held to beat the Timberwolves 111-105 on Sunday.

Love had 22 points and 17 rebounds in his first game since posting 31 points and 31 rebounds in a win over the New York Knicks, the NBA's first 30-30 game since Moses Malone in 1982. Michael Beasley led Minnesota with 25 points.

The Hawks led by 15 at 93-78 early in the final period but couldn't put the game away. The Timberwolves cut the lead to four on a 3-pointer by Beasley with 17 seconds remaining.

"We had ample opportunities to create separation but we made some bad plays and made some bad decisions," Drew said, adding his players "have to be smarter."

"It's not a time to panic," Drew said. "It's an area I will continue to pay attention to every single day."

Minnesota outscored the Hawks 33-28 in the final period but couldn't overcome 21 turnovers.

"They outhustled us. They got second-chance points and rebounds and stuff like that," said Minnesota's Sebastian Telfair, who had 18 points and eight assists. "But our problem tonight was, between me and Kevin and Beasley, we had 15 turnovers. And we're the guys that have the ball in our hands the whole game. That shouldn't happen. Not for us to win."

Horford needed three stitches for a cut on the top of his head following a collision with Anthony Tolliver late in the opening quarter. Horford returned midway through the second.

"Our backs were against the wall," Horford said. "We've been in a slump, so it was a big one for us."

Josh Smith added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which won for the first time since moving to 6-0 with a 113-103 win at Minnesota on Nov. 5. The Hawks avoided losing five straight for the first time since 2008.

Smith led Atlanta's defensive effort on Love, who leads the NBA with his average of 14.6 rebounds after his big game against the Knicks.

"Those are dramatic numbers," Horford said. "I think Josh Smith did a great job on him to contain him as best he could."

Jamal Crawford, who led Atlanta's reserves with 11 points, called the win "very important."

"At this point, we had to stop the bleeding," said Crawford, who acknowledged the Hawks' performance wasn't perfect.

"Right now we just have to take it any way we can get it," Crawford said.

Minnesota led 17-7 after an 11-0 run, but Atlanta recovered to lead 30-27 at the end of the first period and kept the lead the rest of the game. The Hawks took their biggest lead at 81-64 and led 93-78 before the Wolves closed the deficit with a string of three 3-pointers.

Corey Brewer's 3 cut the lead to 97-93, but after coach Larry Drew called a timeout, the Hawks recovered with two quick baskets by Smith and Joe Johnson and two free throws by Horford for a 103-92 lead.

"I think that shows how hard we can work," said Beasley of the late comeback attempt.

"We're a young team. We've got to find our niche, know when to speed it up, know when to slow it down, know when to pressure. But that comes with experience."

Johnson finished with 17 points and Jamal Crawford had 11. Tolliver finished with 13 points for the Wolves.

THE FACTS: Al Horford scored 28 points and Josh Smith added 23 as the Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday with a 111-105 win over visiting Minnesota, the last team they beat before their skid. Michael Beasley scored 25 for Minnesota, giving him 102 points over his past three games (34.0 ppg), and Kevin Love added 22 points and 17 rebounds two nights after going 31-31 in a win over the Knicks. Minnesota's two-game win streak ended.

THE STAT: Minnesota entered the game leading the NBA in total rebounding percentage (54.0), but the Hawks held a 40-39 edge on the boards.

TURNING POINT: In the first 4:03 of the game, Love scored eight points as the Wolves took a 17-7 lead, but over the final 43:51, Love scored 14.

QUOTABLE II: "We have to continue to be a blue-collar team that has a mentality of securing the rebound and going back the other way."

HOT: Beasley has scored 42, 35 and 25 points in the past three games on 43-for-76 shooting (56.6 percent). . . . Love's averaging 18.2 rebounds over the past six games with efforts of 12, 16, 9, 24, 31 and 17.

NOT: Atlanta's Mike Bibby shot just 1-for-4 , leaving him 2-for-9 over the past two games with six total points in that time. Josh Smith committed nine turnovers over the past two games, including five Sunday.

ROOKIE WATCH: Minnesota forward Wes Johnson scored 10 points, and after making 4 of 8 shots he has made 15 of 25 over the past three games, averaging 12.3 points in that span. He entered the game fourth in the NBA in scoring among rookies (10.8).

NOTABLE: Minnesota guard Luke Ridnour missed his fourth straight game with a strained left hamstring, and will be re-evaluated Tuesday. With Ridnour out, Sebastian Telfair has had eight assists in each of Minnesota's last two games. He added 18 points Sunday after going scoreless Friday against the Knicks ... With five of his 10 rebounds coming on the defensive end, Smith moved past John Drew and into seventh place in franchise history in that category with 2,557. Kevin Willis is atop the franchise chart with 4,717.
