Bucks-Hawks Preview

Atlanta was pushed to the limit in beating Milwaukee during the first round of the 2010 playoffs. Based on the way these teams have started this season, getting the best of the Bucks for one night might not be as difficult for the Hawks this time.

The Hawks look to avoid a third straight loss and continue their recent home dominance over the Bucks on Wednesday night.

Atlanta earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, but needed seven games to beat Milwaukee to reach the second round.

"We made it a tough series," Bucks swingman Carlos Delfino said. "To go seven games, I think we did pretty good."

The Hawks held the Bucks to 85.8 points per game on 39.8-percent shooting while going 3-1 at home in that series. Atlanta also has a six-game regular-season home winning streak over Milwaukee (3-5), which is 1-3 on the road this season.

After opening this season with six straight wins, the Hawks (6-2) lost 118-114 at home to Phoenix on Sunday and 93-89 at Orlando the next night.

Their latest defeat against the division rival that swept them out of the playoffs in the second round is one first-year coach Larry Drew hopes his team can learn from.

"As I told our guys, 'Let's not look at this loss as a moral victory,"' Drew said. "We've always felt in our hearts all along that we were capable of playing against any team."

Joe Johnson had 23 points against the Magic and has totaled 57 on 24-of-42 shooting the last two games. He's averaged 26.8 points in his last five regular season contests versus Milwaukee.

The Bucks try a third time to win back-to-back games this season after beating New York 107-80 at home Tuesday.

Milwaukee, which ranks near the bottom of the league averaging 91.8 points, topped 100 for the second time while shooting a season-high 51.3 percent against the Knicks.

"We've been struggling as a team and it was important for us to come out and get a win," Bucks center Andrew Bogut said.

Brandon Jennings had 19 points and Drew Gooden added 17 for the Bucks, who led 41-19 after the first quarter.

Jennings has struggled early after getting off to a stellar start during his 2009-10 rookie season. The 21-year-old point guard has averaged 14.9 points this season compared to the 25.5 through his first eight games last season.

"I felt like I had to be a little more aggressive," said Jennings, who averaged 20.8 points on the road against Atlanta during the playoffs.

Bogut missed the playoffs last season with an elbow injury but has not been much of an offensive factor in his last three games against the Hawks, averaging 10.7 points. However, the 7-footer has averaged 14.7 points and 12.7 boards on the road this season.

Milwaukee could be without Delfino (12.9 ppg) for a second straight game because of a neck strain.

Maggette, Bucks run past Hawks, 108-91

ATLANTA(AP) Corey Maggette and Milwaukee's reserves led the Bucks to their first winning streak of the season and left the stunned Atlanta Hawks with a three-game losing streak.

Maggette and his fellow reserves outscored Atlanta's backups 35-6 in the first half and the Bucks continued their offensive awakening, beating the Hawks 108-91 on Wednesday night.

The Hawks began the season 6-0 before the three straight losses, including two at home. The lopsided loss to the Bucks stunned the Hawks.

"It's hard to explain," said Hawks center Al Horford. "I don't understand what happened."

The Bucks struggled with their offense early in the season and were last in the league in scoring with only 89.6 points per game before taking a 107-80 win over the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.

Maggette had 20 points and Brandon Jennings added 19 as the Bucks took back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

The Bucks trailed by 13 points in the opening period before taking a lopsided 33-14 advantage in the second period for a 54-40 lead at the break. The bench led the second-quarter surge.

"We've got to give our bench a lot of credit tonight," said Bucks coach Scott Skiles. "They came out and not only got us back in the game but, I believe, we had a 27-point turnaround in the first half."

The Bucks continued to stretch the lead after halftime. Jennings had back-to-back 3-pointers late in the third period to stretch the advantage to 30 points at 88-58.

"When adversity hit us in the face, we went our separate ways," said Atlanta's Josh Smith, who had 8 points and 8 rebounds. "We'll figure out what's going wrong, and we'll fix it really quick."

Skiles said the Bucks should receive a confidence boost from the win.

"Hey, look, if you come in here and are up (30) points over the Hawks, you're obviously doing something right out there," Skiles said.

Ersan Ilyasova had 17 points and John Salmons had 16 for Milwaukee.

Backup center Zaza Pachulia led the Hawks with 16. Horford had 14 points but only six rebounds as the Bucks took a 44-32 advantage on the boards.

Horford had 10 points in the first period as Atlanta's starters claimed a 20-7 lead. The advantage began to disappear when Hawks coach Larry Drew began substituting.

"Our starters have gotten us off to fast starts," Drew said. "I'm not getting the energy from the bench. ... That's the third game that's happened to us. I have to find better combinations to use that can sustain the energy."

The Hawks were stretched to seven games before beating the Bucks in the first round of the playoffs last season.

"This is a whole new season," said Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut, who had 8 points. "People are going to build this rivalry up because they beat us in the playoffs, but it's pretty much a whole new team."

The Hawks couldn't match the Bucks' intensity, especially in the second and third periods, when Milwaukee outscored Atlanta 67-33.

Drew said his players were too easily frustrated.

"When it gets a little tough, we have a tendency to hold our heads down," Drew said. "I don't want to see our guys hang their heads."

Joe Johnson made only 5 of 13 shots for 13 points. A highlight for the Hawks was rookie Jordan Crawford, who set a personal high with 11.

Notes: Bucks F Carlos Delfino missed his second straight game with a neck strain. ... Hawks forwards Marvin Williams (bone bruise in his right knee) and Maurice Evans (sore right knee) were held out after working out Wednesday morning. Williams has missed four straight games, and the Hawks are 1-3 without the starter. ... Bibby passed 14,000 career points with his first basket.

THE FACTS: After starting slowly, the Milwaukee Bucks re-discovered the offense pace they used to whip the Knicks a night earlier on the way to a 108-91 win in Atlanta that was more lopsided than that. The Bucks rode a 45-18 skein over the final 16 minutes of the first half to a 54-40 halftime lead and ran the margin to 30 points in the third quarter on the way to handing the Hawks (6-3) their third straight loss. Milwaukee's two best offensive performances have come on back-to-back nights after the Bucks (4-5) beat New York 107-80 at home Tuesday. Corey Maggette scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the first half, and bench-mate Irsan Ilyasova scored 17 for the Bucks, who have won three of their past four.

QUOTABLE: "We started the game really sluggish so we have to give our bench a lot of credit tonight. They came back and got our guys back in the game. You come in here and have a [30]-point lead against the Hawks . . . and you're doing something right."

THE STAT: 17 x 2. Over the final 16 minutes of the first half, the Bucks made 17 of 30 shots and out-rebounded Atlanta 17-6, 23-8 when adding loose ball and team rebounds as Milwaukee took advantage of an Atlanta power outage (lack of energy) to turn a 22-9 deficit into a 54-40 halftime lead.

TURNING POINT: It came over the latter part of the first quarter and early in the second, when the Hawks all but stopped playing defense and the Bucks flexed their defense outward. Atlanta used an 16-2 run to take a 20-7 lead in the first quarter on the strength of five jumps shots -- including two 3-pointers by Mike Bibby. Joe Johnson added a jumper to make it 22-9. But The Hawks missed 11 of their next 14 jumpers (those beyond eight feet) over the final 16 minutes of the half, and Atlanta turned the ball over seven times in that span.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm not getting the energy from the bench. I have to find better combinations to use that can sustain the energy."
-- Hawks first-year coach Larry Drew. Of the 47 points scored by Atlanta's bench, 32 came in the fourth quarter -- all of which qualified as garbage time given that the Hawks trailed 88-58 very late in the third quarter. The fact that reserve center Zaza Pachulia led Atlanta in scoring with 16 underscored this; 14 came in the final period.

HOT: Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings made 4 of 5 3-pointers on the way to scoring 19, and has made 20 of 40 shots (and 8 of 14 treys) over his past three games. He has 16 assists and four turnovers in that span. . . . In the past two games, Milwaukee has made 85 of 165 shots (51.5 percent), including 13 of 31 3-pointers with a modest 13 and 12 turnovers while turning the ball over 12 fewer times than the Knicks and Hawks.

NOT: Atlanta "super sub" Jamal Crawford has made just 9 of 29 shots in Atlanta's three-game losing streak, including 3 of 13 3-pointers. . . .Al Horford has grabbed 11 rebounds over the past two games. . . . Josh Smith has made 9 of 24 shots in the past two games, including 3 of 9 Wednesday.

GOOD MOVE: Skiles' decision to play Ilyasova more off the bench (nearly 23 minutes Wednesday) paid off. He made 8 of 16 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds Wednesday when his playing time was increased in part because starting guard/forward Carlos Delfino missed his second straight game with a strained neck.

ROOKIE WATCH: Atlanta's Jordan Crawford got more run than in any game this season, and turned in a career-high 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting with three rebounds and two turnovers. He's got nice burst when he puts the ball on the floor, and elevates quickly.

NOTABLE: Each team was missing a starter, and the Bucks came out much better for it. They're 2-0 with the two best offensive outings of the season without Delfino. The Hawks fell to 1-3 without small forward Marvin Williams. That win came at lowly Minnesota. "Defensively, it obviously changes up their athleticism with Jason [Collins] being more of a banging center and taking away Al Horford from the center position," Bucks center Andrew Bogut said of Hawks without Williams (bone bruise in knee) . "It slows them down a little bit." . . . Bibby scored 9 points to push his career total to 14,008. . . . With two offensive rebounds, Josh Smith passed Moses Malone (1,021) and moved into ninth place on the Hawks' all-time list (1,022). Kevin Willis is at the top with 2,615.
