Knicks-Bucks Preview

The New York Knicks seemed to have put their early struggles with costly mistakes behind them before their last performance proved they still have some issues to work out.

Facing a Milwaukee Bucks team that has been woeful offensively might help New York bounce back.

The Knicks will try to avoid a fourth straight loss to the Bucks when the teams meet in Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

After back-to-back wins over Chicago and Washington in which they shot a combined 50.3 percent, the Knicks (3-3) made a season-worst 40.0 percent of their attempts in a 106-96 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.

New York shot 5 of 24 in the fourth quarter and was held without a field goal following Amare Stoudemire's tip-in with 4:27 left.

"We are a very young team and making young mistakes sometimes," said Stoudemire, who finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds. "Again, we don't want to have any excuses. We just have to make sure we stand down on shooters and are defending well."

New York is starting two rookies in center Timofey Mozgov and second-round pick Landry Fields, and its second-leading scorer - Toney Douglas - is in his second year in the NBA. That inexperience, combined with new faces in Stoudemire and Raymond Felton, could explain the team's inconsistent start.

New York, which went 3 of 19 from 3-point range Sunday after going 28 of 53 in the two previous games, wasn't much better offensively in three losses to the Bucks last season. The Knicks averaged 87.0 points and were held to 67 in the last meeting.

The addition of Stoudemire might help, as he's averaged 23.5 points in his last six meetings against the Bucks.

Milwaukee (2-5) is coming off a poor offensive performance of its own in an 87-81 loss to New Orleans on Saturday. The Bucks, who are averaging 89.6 points, shot 38.6 percent for a second straight game to see their season mark drop to 39.9. They were 4 of 16 from 3-point range and scored 35 points in the first half.

"It was just an ugly game for us," point guard Brandon Jennings said. "It's starting to get a little bit ridiculous now because every day it's like it's something - shots not falling and we just all break down. Some people are probably not on the same page, or I don't know what it is, but it's getting a little bit annoying now."

Even the return of Andrew Bogut didn't help. After missing the previous game with a migraine, Bogut had 19 points and 14 rebounds.

Bogut had one of the best games of his career the last time he faced the Knicks, scoring 24 points to go along with 20 rebounds and five blocked shots in an 83-67 win Feb. 22.

The Bucks have averaged 104.1 points in winning seven of their last eight against New York.

Bucks end offensive slump, roll past Knicks

MILWAUKEE(AP) Brandon Jennings took it upon himself to help break the Milwaukee Bucks out of an early season shooting slump.

The second-year point guard scored 12 of his 19 points in Milwaukee's 41-point first quarter, and the Bucks never looked back in beating the New York Knicks 107-80 on Tuesday night.

Coming into the game, the Bucks were averaging an NBA-worst 89.6 points and had the second-worst field goal percentage at 39.9 percent. Jennings was hitting just 39.1 percent of his shots.

"I felt like I had to be a little more aggressive tonight," Jennings said. "Going against the Knicks, you are playing a team that gets out and runs and they kind of lack on the defensive end. You have to take advantage of that."

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said Jennings' first-quarter performance was important to a team that had been struggling. Drew Gooden added 11 points in the first 12 minutes.

"It is hard to find anything negative to say about anybody tonight," Skiles said. "Brandon was very aggressive and got us off to a great start. Everyone who stepped on the floor played well for us tonight."

Bucks center Andrew Bogut played against Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire for the first time since Stoudemire was involved in the play last season on which Bogut took a nasty fall resulting in a dislocated elbow and broken wrist. Bogut has said that Stoudemire, then with Phoenix, did nothing wrong on the play.

The game got a bit testy in the third quarter as Stoudemire and Bogut jostled for position as they ran down the floor. Stoudemire was hit with a technical foul and then waved away Skiles as he walked away from the play.

Stoudemire was booed virtually every time he touched the ball Tuesday night.

Bogut, who finished with 10 points, said he did not remember the incident in the third quarter with Stoudemire.

"I was just trying to beat the New York Knicks," he said. "The rest is history. We've been struggling as a team and it was important for us to come out tonight and get a win."

Skiles refused to call the incident with Stoudemire an "altercation." He said he thought Stoudemire was talking to the Bucks bench and "was addressing him back."

Stoudemire said he got hit by Bogut and thought it was intentional. Asked if Bogut was getting back at him for last season's incident, Stoudemire said, "Possibly. I don't know what he's thinking."

Stoudemire led the Knicks with 19 points and Wilson Chandler added 11.

The Knicks, who trailed by as many as 25 points in the first half, used an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to trim the Bucks' lead to 71-57 when Stoudemire hit a jumper.

Milwaukee responded by outscoring the Knicks 19-10 during the rest of the third quarter to grab a 90-67 lead when Luc Mbah a Moute scored on a layup at the buzzer. The run was highlighted by Bogut blocking Stoudemire's shot on one end and then scoring on a thunderous dunk on the other with 1:22 remaining.

The Bucks took control of the game from the beginning, as they hit 13 of their first 15 shots and grabbed a 35-18 lead with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter when Jennings hit a 23-foot jumper, the last of four straight baskets for the second-year point guard.

Milwaukee hit 3-of-6 3-pointers in its highest-scoring quarter of the season. The Knicks only hit 7-of-23 shots for 30 percent.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said New York could never recover from Milwaukee's early blitz.

"Jennings came out and hit a couple 3s and put us on our heels and we never could get it going after that," he said.

Notes: Bucks forward Carlos Delfino missed the game with a neck strain and is listed as day-to-day. Knicks forward Ronny Turiaf sprained his left knee in the first half and did not return. ... Knicks trainer Roger Hinds was hit with a technical foul with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter when he went on the floor to help an injured player, but a timeout was never called.

THE FACTS: Brandon Jennings scored 19 points and added six assists as the Milwaukee Bucks broke out of a shooting slump with a torrid first quarter on their way to a 107-80 victory over the New York Knicks on Tuesday at the Bradley Center. The Bucks (3-5) entered the game shooting just 39.9 percent for the season but made 13 of their first 15 shots and took a 41-19 lead after the first quarter. Milwaukee finished with seven players in double figures. The Knicks (3-4) never got closer than 14 the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE: "Our energy level was high tonight. Playing against a team like the Knicks, a team that shoots a lot of threes and gets out rolling, you have to bring a lot of energy in the beginning, and I think that's what we did."

THE STAT: After entering the game shooting just 39.9 percent as a team, the Bucks exploded in the first quarter to make 13 of their first 15 shots. They ended the first quarter 15-for-22 to hold a 41-19 lead. Of their seven missed shots, the Bucks claimed four offensive rebounds.

TURNING POINT: Drew Gooden entered the game shooting just 39.3 percent but was 4-for-5 in the opening 4:49 as the Bucks raced to a 20-10 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "He and Bogues (Andrew Bogut) got into it and I thought he was addressing our bench and I thought I'd address him back."

HOT: Bogut didn't have many opportunities, but he didn't miss on any of them, going 5-for-5 to score 10 points.

NOT: After his 4-for-5 start, Gooden made just one more shot out of his next 10 and finished at 5-for-15. He is now shooting just 38 percent (27-for-71) on the season.

GOOD MOVE: Bucks coach Skiles started Luc Richard Mbah a Moute in place of the injured Carlos Delfino (neck). The Bucks are 2-0 when Mbah a Moute starts.

ROOKIE WATCH: New York guard Landry Fields had eight points and center Timofey Mozgov added seven points and five rebounds.

NOTABLE: Milwaukee's Delfino did not play because of a strained neck. Mbah a Moute started in his place and posted 10 points and eight rebounds. Mbah a Moute left in the third quarter for X-rays on his right elbow after getting his arm twisted while caught up in a screen, but X-rays were negative and he returned to the game. ... Bucks guard John Salmons had a basket taken away minutes after he made the shot early in the fourth quarter, as replay review showed it came after the shot clock had expired and the call was overturned. ... With just under a minute left and the Bucks ahead by 107-77, Milwaukee rookie Larry Sanders earned a loud ovation by sprinting after a loose ball and diving on the court to try to save the ball.
