Amare Stoudemire hasn't quite been the difference-maker on offense the New York Knicks were expecting in his reunion with coach Mike D'Antoni.

Thanks to some hot shooting from his teammates and steadily improving defense, the Knicks are progressing anyway.

New York looks to make it three straight wins for the first time since January as they host the struggling Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.

Stoudemire is shooting 41.5 percent and has averaged 5.4 turnovers through five games, but it turns out the Knicks (3-2) aren't relying solely on their $100 million free-agent acquisition.

New York won its past two games thanks to some fantastic shooting. Toney Douglas scored a career-high 30 points in a 120-112 victory at Chicago on Thursday as the Knicks hit 16 of 24 from behind the arc. The guard then had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as New York again stayed hot from 3-point range (12 of 29) in a 112-91 win over Washington on Friday.

"We're creating our own identity, making sure of our own destiny," said Douglas, who has scored in double figures in all five games off the bench. "We know what it takes to win and everyone's on the same page."

Raymond Felton (43.5 percent) and Danilo Gallinari (41.7) have also shot well from beyond the arc, but more surprising is some defensive disruption the Knicks rarely displayed in D'Antoni's first two seasons.

New York leads the league with 8.4 blocks per game - Stoudemire had four Friday - and has averaged 9.8 steals in its past four contests. The Knicks forced 45 turnovers against Chicago and Washington, and they've yielded 100.2 points per game thus far - 13.8 fewer than what they were allowing through five games last season.

"We're playing well, we really are," Stoudemire said. "We're doing a great job defensively. That's the most important factor for us right now, is to really key in defensively. Our offense is going to work itself out. Guys are slowly getting into their rhythm out there."

New York hasn't won three straight since a three-game run from Jan. 1-7, but it certainly seems capable of matching that streak against the 76ers (1-5).

After starting 0-4, Philadelphia routed Indiana 101-75 on Wednesday by holding the Pacers to 31.5 percent shooting. That impressive defensive showing, however, didn't carry over to Friday.

Visiting Cleveland shot 54.7 percent, got to the free-throw line 48 times and scored 44 points in the fourth quarter of a 123-116 comeback win.

Point guard Jrue Holiday had a career-high 29 points for Philadelphia, which is in danger of being 1-6 for the first time since 1994-95.

"The hardest thing to teach a team is how to win," first-year coach Doug Collins said. "Not how to get close, but how to win, and that is what we are going to keep striving to do."

The Sixers have lost three in a row to the Knicks after taking the previous six meetings, and they'll be without Andre Iguodala at Madison Square Garden. The team's leading scorer in each of the past four seasons, Iguodala left the game against the Cavaliers with an injured right Achilles' tendon.

Iguodala has started 252 consecutive games.

NEW YORK(AP) Elton Brand's best basketball since coming to Philadelphia has been wasted early this season.

He hopes that's about to change.

Brand scored 20 points, Lou Williams and Jrue Holiday each had 19, and the 76ers beat the New York Knicks 106-96 on Sunday.

A former All-Star, Brand has scored 20 or more in four straight games, his longest stretch since seven in a row late in the 2006-07 season for the Los Angeles Clippers. It hasn't mattered much, since the 76ers are just 2-5.

"It feels OK because we're not winning. But we're just so close to winning," Brand said of his resurgence. "If we were getting blown out or something, then it wouldn't matter to me, scoring 20 points, I don't care about that. But we're just so close to winning, our record could definitely be two or three games above .500. We lost some close, close games, so now hopefully this will give us some confidence to keep building on."

Evan Turner, the No. 2 pick and last season's college player of the year, added 14 points and 10 rebounds in his first NBA start as the 76ers snapped the Knicks' two-game winning streak. Turner started in place of Andre Iguodala, who was out with a strained right Achilles' tendon.

The 76ers already have lost twice by three or fewer points, and fell apart in the fourth quarter of their previous game, a 123-116 loss to Cleveland on Friday. They owned this fourth quarter, holding the Knicks to 5-of-24 shooting.

"It was really good to see these guys feel good about themselves," coach Doug Collins said. "We have been in all these games and the guys finally found a way to finish."

Amare Stoudemire had 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who managed just 15 points in the final period. After consecutive wins, they heard boos as they walked off the floor at 3-3.

"We had some mental lapses," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We came out too not focused like we needed to be."

Stoudemire's follow shot gave the Knicks their last lead at 94-93 before the Sixers ran off nine in a row. Tony Battie made a jumper, Holiday nailed a 3-pointer, then Turner stole Stoudemire's pass for a layup and a 100-94 advantage. Holiday capped the decisive burst with two free throws.

Stoudemire's free throw got the Knicks back within six, but they couldn't grab a rebound after forcing a miss and Williams hit a pair of free throws with 40 seconds to go.

Brand made six of seven shots in the first quarter, scoring 12 points and helping the 76ers take a 33-25 lead after they shot 70 percent. Slowed by injuries, he averaged just 13.3 points in his first two seasons after signing an $80 million contract with Philadelphia. He's scoring 18.6 per game this season on 58 percent shooting.

"I remember back in the day he was a beast. He's just been hurt the last couple of years," Turner said. "But I feel like he's really healthy and he's out there being a warrior."

Philadelphia led by 10 midway through the second before the Knicks got their transition game going, roaring back with a 15-3 spurt to take a 54-52 lead on Ronny Turiaf's dunk with 1:44 remaining. New York led 56-54 at halftime.

The Knicks built a nine-point lead in the third, but Collins went deep down his bench, going with a frontcourt of Battie, Marreese Speights and Jodie Meeks to help the Sixers cut it to 81-80 heading to the fourth.

"We lost the game in the third quarter," Stoudemire said. "A lot of free throws. We were putting those guys on the line."

Reserve Toney Douglas scored 17 points and Danilo Gallinari added 15 for New York, which won the final three meetings last season after dropping the previous six. Raymond Felton finished with seven points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

NOTES: Iguodala had started 252 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the league behind the Lakers' Derek Fisher, who entered Sunday at 297, and had missed just six of a possible 498 in his career. ... The Knicks came in averaging a league-leading 8.4 blocked shots per game. They ranked 29th last season and 30th two seasons ago in that category, when they had fewer as a team than Orlando's Dwight Howard. ... Wilson Chandler (17.4, 3rd) and Douglas (16.4, 5th) both entered in the league's top five in reserve scoring. Detroit's Ben Gordon was first (21.7), Williams was second (17.7) and former Knicks forward Al Harrington (16.6) fourth.

Knicks-Sixers notebook

THE FACTS: Despite missing Andre Iguodala, the Philadelphia 76ers came away with a 106-96 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Philadelphia had five players score in double-figures, led by Elton Brand's team-high 20 points. The win was just their second of the season and ended New York's two-game winning streak.

QUOTABLE: "That stuff happens when you try to dig yourself out a hole and we've been in a hole here for a few years. We don't have that swagger and that's where we've lost it a little bit."

THE STAT: Lou Williams did not have a good game shooting from the floor but still managed to score 19 points, sparking Philadelphia off the bench. He used an array of fakes to get his points. Three times he got a New York defender into the air on a shot fake to earn a foul and free throws. Williams went 12-14 from the line for the game.

TURNING POINT: After taking a 92-90 lead, the Knicks went cold and missed six straight shots. Philadelphia responded with an 16-4 run to take final control of the game. Evan Turner's steal and lay-up finish off an Amar'e Stoudemire pass was the dagger.

HOT: In his last three games Toney Douglas has been red-hot. Averaging 18.7 points per game, he has given the Knicks a scorer and more than capable replacement for when Raymond Felton is on the bench. More importantly, during those three games he has 11 steals. New York's defensive aggressiveness starts with him and it's no coincidence they've gone 2-1 during those three games.

NOT: The Knicks won their previous two games with hot shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Against the 76ers, their hot shooting went cold and the meager winning streak ended. Against the Bulls and Wizards, the Knicks hit 52.8 percent of their 53 three-point tries. Against Philadelphia, they shot 3-19 from beyond the arc.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The front row at the Garden turned into Comedian's row. Chris Rock sat a few seats down from Tracey Morgan. Spike Lee sat in his usual seat.

ROOKIE WATCH: Evan Turner was the No. 2 overall pick in the draft while Landry Fields was picked in the second round; both got the start Sunday. Turner scored 14 points, grabbed ten rebounds but turned the ball over in his first career start. Fields scored eight points, had five rebounds and the Knicks outscored Philadelphia by 15 points when he was on the court.

NOTABLE: The Knicks suddenly went cold in the fourth-quarter and were outscored by Philadelphia 26-15 in the final period. Coming into the quarter they were hitting 47.5 percent of their shots. But they hit just five of their 24 shots in the fourth quarter with Raymond Felton and Toney Douglas missing their combined eight shots.
