Hornets-Bucks Preview

With the buzz surrounding some other teams, the New Orleans Hornets were all but overlooked heading into this season. A franchise-best start under first-year coach Monty Williams has helped the Hornets steal some of that spotlight.

After an attention-getting victory, New Orleans will try to further its unbeaten start by topping the Milwaukee Bucks for the second time this season Saturday night at the Bradley Center.

After missing the playoffs last season, the Hornets were hoping to improve with star guard Chris Paul healthy. At 5-0, New Orleans is well on its way to leaving that 37-45 finish behind, especially after its latest win.

On Friday night, the Hornets became the second team to take down the well-hyped Miami Heat as Trevor Ariza hit a key 3-pointer with 14 seconds left.

Emeka Okafor had a season-high 26 points and 13 rebounds in the 96-93 victory, and Paul contributed a season-best 19 assists to go with his 13 points.

"It's nice to be part of a group who plays hard every night," Williams said. "Different guys are stepping up."

The Hornets will try to follow up that performance by continuing their recent success against the Bucks (2-4). A 95-91 victory in the season opener Oct. 27 was New Orleans' ninth in 10 games against Milwaukee.

The Hornets have also won three of four at the Bradley Center but that lone defeat came in their most recent trip there Feb. 24. Paul, who played a career-low 45 games in 2009-10, missed both games against the Bucks last season.

While the Hornets will try to keep rolling, the Bucks will attempt to build off Friday night's comeback for their second win this season, 94-90 at Indiana.

After giving up 40 points in the second quarter, Milwaukee overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and outscored the Pacers 42-30 in the second half.

"It was a big win for us," said guard John Salmons, who scored 22 points. "We started off a little slow, but we're gradually getting better."

Brandon Jennings added 18 points but his shooting struggles have continued into his second NBA season. Jennings missed 12 of 19 attempts Friday, leaving him at 38.2 percent.

That's a slight improvement from his rookie campaign when he shot just 37.1 percent. He's averaging 14.7 points this season after scoring 15.5 per game in 2009-10.

"Instead of me just trying to figure out everybody else's game and trying to set back for other people on the team, I'm just going to have to play like I played last year, and that's just be more aggressive," Jennings said. "Take shots, and hey, if I miss them, I miss them. If I make shots, that opens up things for everybody else."

Against the Hornets, Jennings has been held to 12.7 points on 32.5 percent shooting. West, meanwhile, has averaged 22.8 points and 11.1 rebounds in his last 11 games against Milwaukee.

Bucks center Andrew Bogut is questionable for this game. Bogut, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds in the season opener, sat out Friday's win due to a migraine.

West leads unbeaten Hornets over Bucks

MILWAUKEE(AP) The New Orleans Hornets are rolling. The Milwaukee Bucks are sputtering - and growing increasingly frustrated.

David West made 10-of-12 shots and scored a season-high 25 points, and New Orleans remained unbeaten with an 87-81 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday night.

Chris Paul and Marco Belinelli each added 14 for the Hornets, who at 6-0 are off to their best start in franchise history. They entered play under rookie coach Monty Williams as one of only three undefeated teams in the NBA after beating the Miami Heat on Friday.

"I just wanted to be a presence," West said. "I knew we may be a step slow because we had a tough game last night, but we responded. Guys made big plays down the stretch."

Andrew Bogut had 19 points and 14 rebounds in his return to the lineup for Milwaukee after missing Friday night's game against the Indiana Pacers with a migraine. John Salmons added 14 points for the Bucks, who dropped to 2-5.

Brandon Jennings, who had 12 points for Milwaukee, said he can't pinpoint the cause of the early problems and used a couple of expletives in summing up his team's play to date.

"We just need to go out there and play basketball," Jennings said. "Anybody can talk in the locker room."

While Milwaukee looked sluggish for most of the first three quarters, there was no letdown for the Hornets after their 96-93 victory over the Heat on Friday.

They led 41-35 at halftime despite 13 first-half turnovers after Belinelli sank a 64-foot, three-quarter court shot at the halftime buzzer.

West scored 10 points in the third quarter, and the Hornets led by as many as 13 points in the period. They led 65-54 after three, but Milwaukee used an 11-2 run to cut it to 67-65 on Jennings' 3-pointer.

Milwaukee hung tight but got no closer the rest of the way.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute's follow shot made it 84-81 with 1:48 left, but he missed a free throw, and Drew Gooden then missed two free throws with 1:09 remaining that would have made it a one-point game.

The Bucks again had a chance to cut into the lead on their next possession, but West picked off Salmons' errant pass with 42 seconds left, and Paul, who made three shots in the final 5:56, sealed it with a running baseline jumper with 21.5 seconds remaining.

"We had a two-and-a-half hour flight to get up here, and we easily could have just chalked this one up," West said. "At halftime, (coach) Monty (Williams) talked about just fighting the temptation of being tired, and we were able to come out and have a good third quarter, which I thought put them on their heels a little bit and made them fight uphill the rest of the game."

Milwaukee made just 38.6 percent of its shots and 25 percent (4 of 16) of its 3-pointers.

"They missed a lot of shots, but we had 19 turnovers," Williams said. "For us to overcome 19 turnovers, we had to defend."

Said Paul: "The crazy thing is we're still not where we need to be defensively. I think that says a lot about our team. Right now this team gets mad when other teams score."

Jennings said the Bucks could use similar energy.

"It was just an ugly game for us," he said. "It's starting to get a little bit ridiculous now because every day it's like it's something - shots not falling and we just all break down. Some people are probably not on the same page, or I don't know what it is, but it's getting a little bit annoying now.

"When things aren't going right, it just seems like the energy level goes all the way down. We have got to find something before it gets too late and it gets a little ugly."

Migraines have been a recurring problem for Bogut, who also missed a preseason game on Oct. 16 with one. He said it typically takes 48 hours to feel symptom-free and that he still had a minor headache and some light sensitivity before the game Saturday.

Notes: Bogut's 14 rebounds gave him 3,059 for his career, moving him into 10th place in franchise history ahead of Ervin Johnson (3,050). ... The Bucks will not play the Hornets again this season. It is the second-fastest the Bucks have closed out a season series. ... Bucks coach Scott Skiles is now 9-20 all-time against the Hornets.

THE FACTS: David West scored 25 points and Chris Paul posted 14 points, nine assists and six rebounds as the New Orleans Hornets remained unbeaten with an 87-81 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The Hornets improved to 6-0, while the Bucks fell to 2-5 with their second straight home loss.

QUOTABLE: "It's my sixth year in the league and I've seen every defender you could possibly play. We thought coming into the game [Luc Richard] Mbah a Moute would guard me the whole game."
-- Hornets 6-foot point guard Chris Paul on being covered by the 6-foot-8 Mbah a Moute down the stretch and still getting two big baskets and two assists in the final four minutes.

THE STAT: On a night where the Bucks shot just 65 percent (13-for-20) from the line, they missed three straight that would have tied the game in the final two minutes. They were within 84-81 after Mbah a Moute scored and was fouled with 1:48 left. But Mbah a Moute missed the free throw, and 39 seconds later Drew Gooden missed two free throws. Instead of being tied, the Bucks still trailed by three and the Hornets were able to put the game away in the final minute.

TURNING POINT: The Bucks had cut what was once a 13-point deficit down to 67-65 on Brandon Jennings' 3-pointer with 7:07 left. From there, the Hornets got great balance down the stretch to hold off Milwaukee. Over the final 6:32, Emeka Okafor scored a 3-point play, Paul hit three short jumpers, Marco Belinelli hit a 16-footer and a 3-pointer, Trevor Ariza hit a 3-pointer and West dropped in three free throws. "We've got a lot of shooters on our team and it allows me to get in the lane and make plays when those guys are making shots," Paul said.

QUOTABLE II: "We're just shooting the ball terrible. I thought it was just me, but it's us as a combined group."
-- Bucks forward Drew Gooden on Milwaukee's 38.6 percent shooting Saturday night and 39.9 percent mark (223-for-559) for the season.

HOT: West was 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) Saturday night and is shooting 54.9 percent (45-for-82) on the season.

NOT: Both benches were terrible from the field. Milwaukee's subs went just 11-for-36 (30.6 percent) in the game, while the New Orleans bench was even worse at 4-for-20 (20 percent).

NOTABLE: The Bucks used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 14-7 lead. However, the Hornets responded with a 12-0 run during which Milwaukee went 0-for-5 with four turnovers. ... Hornets guard Marco Belinelli beat the halftime buzzer with a shot from about 65 feet to give the Hornets a 41-35 lead at the break. ... Bucks forward Carlos Delfino left the game after the first half with a strained neck and did not return.
